This is the CPAN module Sub::Override.

Perl programmers sometimes have a need to override subroutines,

I'm packaging this because the latest libhtml-tokeparser-simple-perl

Well, one person should be responsible for updating to the latest

This is a good idea, and implemented to some degree in ASK. The problem is
that *nothing* is guaranteed to survive a reply. Adding a cookie to the body
of the email is not 100% foolproof, as there's no guarantee that the reply
will contain the cookie. Adding a specific header with the cookie will also
take us nowhere, as headers mostly discarded in replies. One option is the
Message-ID header, but my experiments showed that a large population of MUAs
(many versions of MS Out-Of-Luck, for instance) trash the Message-ID and
don't put it in the "In-Reply-To" field when responding to an email.

The only "guaranteed" way to know if an email is a reply to something you
sent is to use VERPs, but this creates enormous difficulties for users that
do not have full email control in their servers (users).

In any case, the original problem with the mailing list has nothing to do
with this, but rather with insanity of one of ASK's users.

ASK has a whitelist, an ignorelist and a blacklist. The blacklist sends back
a "nastygram" informing the user that we do not want to receive further
messages from him/her. Unfortunately (and yes, this is my fault), I never
imagined someone would add a mailing-list to his blacklist (sounds just too
insane, doesn't it?). Well, it happened, and I'm now dumping the blacklist
feature entirely to protect the community from people who use it incorrectly.

Regards,
Paga

Yes, we should definitely use debhelper.

As far as I remember they are not very serious. The suid-root programs
drop their privileges on startup.

> The {pre, post}install scripts needs also an improvement i think.
>
> What kind of improvements do you think about ?

I have done some improvements, including switching to debhelper, but
not uploaded them. They are now in the experimental branch of the
repository:

svn://svn.debian.org/pkg-pcmcia-cs/pcmcia-cs/branches/experimental

They need to be tested, revised and then uploaded to experimental, or
maybe sid after sarge has been released.

Other improvements that are needed:

* Update to latest upstream version
* Update the German translation (see the BTS)
* Upload binary kernel modules for the latest 2.4 kernel (see
  pcmcia-modules-i386 in SVN)
* Fix bugs reported in the BTS.
* Probably remove the dmidecode stuff for now (checks for certain
problematic computers, but it's untested and might cause problems)
* Improve PCMCIA support in debian-installer (especially
Cardbus). At one time I sent an untested patch to debian-boot which
  improved Cardbus handling.
* ... other things which I can't remember right now

Yes you're right, that's a mistake. They're actually 3 plugins.

Second try:

 Description: Anti-aliased oscillators LADSPA plugins

These three LADSPA plugins can be used to build up Moog sounding modular
 synthesisers.

They contain three different anti-aliased oscillators, all based
on the concept of using pre-computed band-limited Dirac pulses to
construct the classical waveforms. They are both memory and CPU efficient.
The first one produces a flat spectrum (impulses) and the second
generates a sawtooth waveform. The third one, provides a variable
 width rectangular waveform.

Of course there is protection against it.

Each message that ASK sends out should include a cookie, consisting of the
hash of a characteristic of the message plus a local secret that can stay
invariant on a per-installation basis.

You can use a simple symmetric encryption algorithm using the local cookie
plus the message's unique identifier (the Message-ID would work well if you
create that yourself per the appropriate RFC) as a key. You encipher the
same message for every outbound ASK mail, for instance: "THIS MESSAGE
GENERATED BY ACTIVE SPAM KILLER."

When you get a purported ASK message back, you have the ciphertext, and the
message-specific part of the key in plaintext alongside it (e.g., the
Message-Id).

You then attempt to decrypt the message using your local cookie plus the
plaintext key component. If you get back the desired plaintext, then you
know you got one of your own messages back.

Otherwise, you know you either got some other ASK's message, or that you're
under attack.

The local key and the encryption algorithm don't have to be very strong to
be effective. I wouldn't use something as simple as XOR, though, because
you'd be using the same plaintext all the time and a known-plaintext attack
is obvious.

These techniques are very, very old.

Bug#206691: alternative Debian packages for matplotlib 0.63.4

2004-10-14 Thread Jochen Voss
Hello,

I produced a set of alternative Debian packages for matplotlib
version 0.63.4. These are based on Vittorio Palmisano's packages,
but include the following changes:

   * I fixed the dependencies and build-dependencies. The package
should now build fine on build-daemons and such.
   * I only build the gtkagg backend, to keep the list of dependencies
 slim.
   * I made the package build without an X-server connection.
   * The package does no longer install duplicates of the Vera* TTF
font files but uses the ones from ttf-bitstream-vera instead.
This reduces the binary package size by several 100kb.
   * The example scripts in the -doc package are executable.

You can find my packages on my homepage at

http://seehuhn.de/debian/

Comments and suggestions are very welcome.

Vittorio: fell free to incorporate all these changes into your
packages as you see fit.

All the best,
Jochen

This reopens Bus #173050. I do know that icoutils also can do that task,

It's nice that you packaged png2ico. But, as long as it doesn't offer
features which are missing in icoutils, what's the added value of this
second tool? Don't you think uploading it would just increase the size
of debian without any advantage to the user?

Jan

png2ico can reduce colors while creating the ico file. From the man page:
"Using the parameter --colors you can specify the number of colors to
use for the images that follow --colors on the command line. Allowed
values are 2, 16 and 256. If omitted, 256 colors will be used. --colors
can be specified multiple times to store images with different numbers
of colors in the same icon file. If the source image has more than the
specified number of colors, color reduction will be performed."

If you think that is not enough, please tell me and I will close the bug.

   What are these plugins for? It looks like they are LADSPA plugins;
please briefly mention what LADSPA is in the descriptions, and what it's
useful for (see tap-plugins and swh-plugins, though I don't believe they
give enough information either).

Also, the package is called "vco-plugins" but the long description
says "This plugin".

Bug#276495: ITP: fil-plugins -- A parametric equalizer LADSPA plugin

2004-10-14 Thread Free Ekanayaka
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: fil-plugins
  Version : 0.0.1
  Upstream Author : Fons Adriaensen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL or Web page :
http://users.skynet.be/solaris/linuxaudio/downloads/FIL-plugins-0.0.1.tar.bz2
* License : GPL
Description : A parametric equalizer LADSPA plugin

Four-band parametric equaliser. Each section has an active/bypass
switch, frequency, bandwidth and gain controls. There is also a
global bypass switch and gain control.
 .
The 2nd order resonant filters are implemented using a Mitra-Regalia
style lattice filter, which has the nice property of being stable
even while parameters are being changed.
 .
All switches and controls are internally smoothed, so they can
be used 'live' whithout any clicks or zipper noises. This should
make this plugin a good candidate for use in systems that allow
automation of plugin control ports, such as Ardour, or for
 stage use.

Bug#276489: RFP: sam2p -- convert raster images to EPS and PDF and others

2004-10-14 Thread Szabó Péter
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: sam2p
  Version : 0.44
  Upstream Author : Szabó Péter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.inf.bme.hu/~pts/sam2p/
* License : GPL
Description : convert raster images to EPS and PDF and others

sam2p is a UNIX command line utility written in ANSI C++ that converts many
raster (bitmap) image formats into Adobe PostScript or PDF files. The images
are not vectorized. sam2p gives full control to the user to specify
standards-compliance, compression, and bit depths. In some cases sam2p can
compress an image 100 times smaller than the PostScript output of many other
common image converters. sam2p provides ZIP, RLE and LZW (de)compression
 filters even on Level1 devices.
 .
Recommendations: package netpbm provides the tifftopnm and pngtopnm utilities.
Please use tif22pnm and png22pnm (by the author of sam2p) instead of these,
because *22* provides a much richer functionality with less bugs. package
libjpeg-prog provides the excellent cjpeg and djpeg utilities.

Subject: sam2p in Debian?

I just downloaded sam2p today, and it's a very cool program. Thanks
for writing it and making it available.

One thing that I think would help sam2p become better known would be
to make it part of the Debian distribution. I see from the 0.44
sources that you've done some work in creating a Debian package, but I
don't see any mention of it on Debian's web pages. Were you planning
on submitting your package there?

Another thing one might want to consider is suggesting sam2p as a
program for an existing Debian developer to package, by submitting an
RFP at

http://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp/

I was actually thinking of doing this myself, but I thought I'd check
with you first.

I, the author of sam2p, don't want to be a Debian package maintainer -- I
don't have time for this.

This package provides source special insertion into DVI files, allowing to
jump from the DVI file to the .tex source and back (given a DVI viewer that
supports this like xdvi or kdvi; also called forward and reverse search).
 .
Running "latex -src" provides the same feature, but this package yields mo=

It's nice that you packaged png2ico. But, as long as it doesn't offer
features which are missing in icoutils, what's the added value of this
second tool? Don't you think uploading it would just increase the size
of debian without any advantage to the user?

Description : Trace the route to a destination using a protocol
and port

Traceproto is a replacement for the venerable traceroute. It serves the
same function, to determine the path that traffic takes between the
current location and a remote machine. Like the original traceroute it
uses the IP time-to-live field and watches for the return ICMP packets
from each successive gateway. Traceproto improves on the original by
letting the user select the protocol and destination port to trace to.
In the current world of firewalls and traffic filtering it is no longer
enough to assume that if some traffic is getting to the remote machine
that it all is.

Is this just because your workload is too high? Or is there any other
reason like "bochs is bad" or "there are better alternatives" or the
like?

Description : Free image processing system

VIPS is a free image processing system. It aims to be about half way between
Excel and Photoshop. It's obviously much smaller than these two, but it's not
a toy either (about 200k lines of code). It's very bad at photo retouching,
but it's great (much better than programs like Photoshop) at all the other
things you use photoshop for. It's particularly good with large images (ie.
images larger than the amount of RAM in your machine), and for working with
colour.

Description : A report generation system written in PHP

PHPReports takes report definitions written in a custom XML DTD format and
turns them into a complete set of PHP code, which can be run to produce a
HTML formatted report in the format you specified.

Currently only HTML reports can be produced, in a fairly straightforward
table-oriented style, however work is underway to allow the generation of
PDF, plain text, and other formatting styles, for those that want them.
