No. I guess I should, but after some hesitation I decided that the
facts are obvious and taking such a shortcut will save some time in
bringing the upgrade to Debian users.

This can be achieved otherwise, well, such a shortcut (asking for
someone to hijack the package without even asking the maintainer) is
considered a tad rude if the maintainer isn't even cc'd on the actual
request. If a maintainer is unresponsive, you can always as user mail to
-devel asking about it, or the better mailinglist in this case would
have been -qa.

My apology if I broke some rules - a BTS manual for *users* seems to
 be missing.

wnpp (this isn't about the BTS really, you apparantly are perfectly able
to send out a good O: bugreport on wnpp) is not at all intended for
users, developer (but readable for everyone) documentation is
available[0] (but not dealing with what to do with neglecting packages).

Neglected/outdated packages only as last step will get orphaned, see [1]
for a bit of information (though not complete nor 100% useful for
non-developers).

I do acknowledge however, that when I tried a user-oriented search for
what to do, I failed to find any good information, except mailinglists
to ask for. This probably should be fixed...

Bug#295078: RFP: stochastirator -- an accelerated discrete reaction event simulator

2005-02-13 Thread Luca Brivio
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: stochastirator
  Version : 0.0.1
  Upstream Author : Eric Lyons
* URL : http://opnsrcbio.molsci.org/stochastirator/
* License : GPL
Description : an accelerated discrete reaction event simulator

The Stochastirator represents the time-dependent behavior of biochemical
reaction networks in accordance with stochastic chemical kinetics.
Briefly, for a user-specified reaction netwrok, the program works by,

   1. computing the next time each reaction will execute based on
the unique number of substrate molecules (or combinations) and reaction
propensity.
   2. sorting the next (reaction) time(s) to determine which
reaction next occurs.
   3. executing the next reaction, thereby advancing the simulation
time and updating the number of products and substrates involved in the
reaction.
   4. computing a new next time for the executed reaction and
reactions whose number of substrate species (or combinations) were
changed by the just executed reaction.
   5. repeating steps 2-4 until the end time of the simulation is
reached

The next reaction time, t, is computed using the First Reaction Method
developed by Gillespie in 1976.

t=(1/a)ln(1/r)

where,

a is the reaction propensity (the product of the reaction rate and
the number of unique reactant combinations), r is a random number
drawn from a uniform distribution in the unit interval.

Bug#294990: ITP: bontmia -- backup over network to multiple incremental archives

What advantages does this package have over, say, dirvish or backuppc?

I never used dirvish nor backuppc, so I can't really say what the
difference are. But it seems like bontmia is simpler than both
(especially backuppc). I can't really say if that's a reason for
creating a new package, I personally would like it, because it's already
running on several of my machines, but beside of that, it wouldn't be a
big problem for me to close my ITP.

What do you think?

The upstream version probably corrects all or most of the bugs

As the maintainer is evidently not active, I declare the package as
  orphaned.

Did you try to contact the maintainer before taking this step?

Well, as jvw said, you should have contact me before O: this staff,
but in this case you are actually welcomed.

The reason why Debian's sitecopy is so dated...the current Debian
version is the last one as far as I know which contains a working
xsitecopy (GNOME1 frontend). Now it doesn't even build and GTK1
became a relic of the past. At that time I thought someone will port
xsitecopy to GTK2, but after 2 years I think it won't happen any soon.
And I anyway forgot about sitecopy (I don't use it anymore). In
short, I almost lost my interest in sitecopy now.

So if you want to take over the maintainership of sitecopy, go ahead.
Or, I'll package new version of sitecopy without xsitecopy, but it
won't happen soon (Recently I'm back from the thesis hell and
concentrate on packaging Ghostscript stuff. Also still fighting with
a pile of mails.)

Best regards,
MH

I won't be attempting to package daimonin. Its not a complicate package,
but has a couple of issues. I have free time, but I don't have a lot of
it (and I'm not willing to spend that much time on this software).

The issues I found are:
1) Upstream is not very responsive. I got no response from the mail
listed in their site. The address on the copyright author line bounces
back. I did not try to web forums though.

2) This program is composed of several parts with mixed licenses. The
client is main, editor and server contrib and data non-free. This is
only a first impression, if you will me attempting to package this you
should inspect the program deeper. I'm not sure what's the status of the
art for the client.

3) The data package for the sever is, at best, non-free. Its a
collection of contributions. Upstream seems to have some general
guidelines for the license of these contributions, but I don't know if
they force the contributors to accept these guidelines.

4) Its a mixture of languages/scripts: C++, Python and Java.

Bug#295122: RFA: iproute -- Professional tools to control the networking in Linux kernels

2005-02-13 Thread Andreas Barth
Package: wnpp

Hi,

anyone who wants to work on iproute is greatly welcome, perhaps also as
co-maintainer (and I'm also willing to sponsor people). The reason I
intend to give the package away is that I'm not really the great
networking guy, but I'll try to give the package a warm home till I can
pass it over to someone else -- and as iproute is quite vital for
some purposes, I'll do some checks before giving the package away. It is
_not_ orphaned, I'm only looking for somebody else for maintaining.

The description is:
This is `iproute', the professional set of tools to control the
networking behavior in kernels 2.2.x and later.
 .
At least, the options CONFIG_NETLINK and CONFIG_NETLINK_DEV (or
CONFIG_RTNETLINK) must be compiled into the running kernel.
 .
This package is also known as iproute2 upstream and in some
 documentation.

Cheers,
Andi

Bug#295121: RFA: fsh -- Fast remote command execution over rsh/ssh/lsh

2005-02-13 Thread Andreas Barth
Package: wnpp

Hi,

anyone who wants to work on fsh is greatly welcome, perhaps also as
co-maintainer (and I'm also willing to sponsor people). The reason I
intend to give the package away is that I detected that ssh 3.9's
connection reusal is as good for my purpose. If noone picks this package
up at the time ssh 3.9 goes into unstable, I intend to ask for removal
of fsh.

fsh's description is:
The problem: logging in to a remote system with a cryptographic
solution such as lsh or ssh takes time, due to the computationally
expensive key exchanges that occur when the connection is established.
It is common to trigger a lot of remote logins while using remote CVS,
which makes it painfully slow compared to having the repository
 locally.
 .
The solution: reuse the secure tunnel once it has been established.
fsh is a drop-in rsh-compatible replacement for ssh that automatically
 reuses ssh tunnels.

Cheers,
Andi

Yes, that was the reason I gave it up. And I don't use beaver too.
~ csacca I really like beaver, but I don't really have the time ( or

I personally believe, that software which has no upstream maintainership
should
not be in debian, because it will become a maintainance nightmare for
the maintainer.
And there are quite a lot of replacements, so the active usebase will
move on,
rendering the package useless.
~ csacca My package of beaver 0.2.7 is at

~ csacca but perhaps beaver should be dropped from debian as no one is

Yes, that's what I too feel.

Bug#294990: ITP: bontmia -- backup over network to multiple incremental archives

2005-02-13 Thread Matthew Palmer
On Sun, Feb 13, 2005 at 03:49:45PM +0100, Reto Schuettel wrote:
On Sun, Feb 13, 2005 at 09:25:15AM +1100, Matthew Palmer wrote:
bontmia creates incremental snapshots of a list of given directories
over the network by using rsync over ssh and hard links. Every snapshot
looks for the user like a complete copy of all the files, but as a result
of using hard links every unchanged copy of a file is stored only once on
   the hard disk.

What advantages does this package have over, say, dirvish or backuppc?

I never used dirvish nor backuppc, so I can't really say what the
difference are. But it seems like bontmia is simpler than both
 (especially backuppc).

Simpler in terms of features available, or simpler in terms of configuration
for the same level of features?

 I can't really say if that's a reason for creating a new package, I
personally would like it, because it's already running on several of my
machines, but beside of that, it wouldn't be a big problem for me to close
 my ITP.

 What do you think?

It's a tricky one. I'm a firm believer in not duplicating effort, and with
the existence of at least two other packages which appear to do a similar
job, I'm just worried that we'll end up with a lot of packages doing the
same thing, which does nothing except dissipate effort and fragment the user
base of all of the alternatives. However, at the end of the day, you're the
one expending the effort, so if you think it's worthwhile, I've got no
reason to stop you.

Bug#295122: RFA: iproute -- Professional tools to control the networking in Linux kernels

2005-02-13 Thread Andrew Pollock
On Sun, Feb 13, 2005 at 09:39:15PM +0100, Andreas Barth wrote:

 Hi,

anyone who wants to work on iproute is greatly welcome, perhaps also as
co-maintainer (and I'm also willing to sponsor people).

Hello,

I'd be interested in taking this package if no one else has volunteered yet.

Has it been terribly high maintenance? What's the upstream author like?

regards

Andrew

Bug#251229: this is a really good library

2005-02-13 Thread Janek Kozicki
Package: wnpp
Followup-For: Bug #251229

please consider again adding libloki as a debian package, this is a
really useful and powerful C++ template library. Together with STL
(Standard Template Library), and boost (libboost) they give extreme
powers to C++ programmers.

This library has several versions for several different compilers, since
on debian we have g++ which conforms to the standards, please use only
subdirectory loki/Reference to create this package. Other directories
are specially for other compilers which do not conform to the standard.

in my current project I want to use class AssocVector from loki library
which is just like std::map, but much faster (constant-access).
Unfortunately boost library does not provide such container.

Bug#295155: ITP: steam -- environment for cooperative knowledgemanagment

2005-02-13 Thread Alain Schroeder
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Alain Schroeder [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: steam
  Version : 1.5.12
Upstream Author : open sTeam-Team [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://www.open-steam.org/
* License : GPL
Description : environment for cooperative knowledgemanagment

sTeam provides a technical platform which allows groups of students, lecturers
and any other groups to construct and arrange their individual and cooperative
learning and working space.

sTeam consists of an object-oriented server connected to a database and Web,
Java and other (ftp, irc, ...) clients. The server is event-driven and manages
all user objects as well as the communication between the connected clients.

Different from most other cooperation tools is the novel possibility of
self-organisation and self-administration by the members within the virtual
environment.

In the core, the system provides the following self-administrating functions:

 * creation of rooms
 * granting of admission or access authorisations
 * administration and processing of objects or references to objects and
   documents located on other servers
 * carrying objects and passing them on to other users
 * use of rooms as cooperative media (e.g. Shared Whiteboard)

This library provides an easy way to create output with similar formatting but
changing values. It is styled after perl's built-in format capablities.

This package is basically done as far as I can tell. It's located at
