I am the Xapian developer who put together the Debian packages on the Xapian website. Unfortunately, I haven't had the time to learn all the details of Debian policy (or I would have applied to become a Debian maintainer), but the packages function reasonably well. They need some work to be made fully Debian policy compliant, but I would be happy to liaise with and assist any Debian developer - whether they wish to build on my existing packages, or start afresh. I am focused on the server at the moment, which offers a webinterface (it has it's own webserver) as well as the possibility to connect with a news, email, irc, ftp and jabber client. We need it, because we use it as a backend in a PHP based website. There are clients for the Zaurus and Java available. Sounds good -- this bug had just gone radio silent, so I wanted to see if it had been dropped or something, nice to see there is good reason behind it. If you have a package that works, and is good it might be a good idea to upload it so it gets a spot in the new queue, and as you may know things in the new queue don't necessarily get processed in order.
