Bug#280209: Debian experimental package pending upload

2005-05-02 Thread Chad Walstrom
In response to the Request For Package (RFP) #280209, [1]_ I've hacked
up a quick codeville package. The diff is attached. There are some
debian-legal matters concerning Open Source License v2.0 (and even
v2.1), so it'll probably end up in non-free (not that I agree with
these legal banterings at all). We'll see what the ftp masters do
with it. I recall seeing a note on the codeville.org website that the
next release may be under a BSD-style license. Is this still
applicable?

I don't have a LOT of time to maintain the package, so I would be
perfectly happy to co-maintain it with someone (anyone interested)?

The codeville package is installed against Python 2.3, the default
python package for Sarge. If you feel that there should be further
restrictions to version dependency or if you would like version
specific packages, let me know. (Personally, I think it's overkill
unless you're making module packages.)

Thx for this discussion.

In fact, I am not requesting this sponsorship in order to get in touch with
any debian maintainer, as I already know two futurs and just encounter one
today, but I am only willing to provide the ditribution with a really good
soft - up to my point -, and also to be proud of having helped in the project
of course.. ;)

Thks for your proposal Jonas, but I would apreciate having my name on my work
that seems to me a minimal request ;)
So I will wait for a sponsor, even if I noticed it can take little time...

Thks guys!

Bug#307166: RFA: vim-latexsuite -- brings the LaTeX power to Vim

On Mon, May 02, 2005 at 08:44:24PM +0200, Matthijs Mohlmann wrote:

Great.

Package is almost identical to the upstream. It has changed
ftplugin/latex-suite/folding.vim file. This is fix to #246798. Bug with
patch has been reported to upstream[1] but he decided not to fix it.

Please take a look at BORKENFILES in debian/rules and mentioned files.

And last but not least: the package uses helpztags perl script to scan
compressed help files instead of vim helptags built-in. The script also
scans plain text help files and it should be used in all other packages.
In other case it could cause unexpected behavior like #294170.
I exchanged some emails with submitter of this bug and the true reason of
this bug was vimoutliner package, which does not use helpztags and it
overwrited help tag file in its own way. Probably you should also take care
about this case.

I think that's all what I should tell about this package.

Best Regards
Artur

The package description is:
AnImaL is an imaging and computer vision library written in C.
Differently from most other toolkits, it is intended to provide
the maximum functionality by making strong usage of similar
libraries. It is intended to be a common API to the best free imaging

and Gandalf. By defining a common API and using external libraries,
AnImaL selects the best implementation available in them to implement
a particular algorithm. This way AnImaL unites the best from the

As said, the sarge kernels are frozen, and my contribution is not really
wanted anymore by the sarge team, so i am letting them take over this package
in order to focus on the post-sarge kernels.

This package is not really orphaned, since it should be maintained by the
kernel-team, but it would be nice if someone else could take over the build of
them.

Sven Luther

As said, these kernels are frozen for sarge, so i am not really wanted to do
any further work on them, and will thus concentrate on post-sarge 2.6.11 and
beyond powerpc kernels.

There should not be real problems, since the maintenance is mostly done by the
debian kernel-team, but it would be nice if someone showed up and did the
build of those kernels, unless the buildd can handle them.

Just FYI, this is a minority point of view, the (big) majority of DD's
seem to agree that sponsoring *is* a good thing, and it's even a
requirement to have a sponsored package in the archive while progressing
through NM.

Beauxir5, you are free to seek out whatever sponsor you like, you are
not forced to take the first offer (which isn't a sponsorship offer
anyway, just a request for adoption).

I do not want to sponsor your package, but I am willing to temporarily
adopt the package until you become an official Debian maintainer.

I consider "package sponsoring" to be broken - a bad hack that should
never have been invented. You are most welcome to help out maintaining
the package while waiting in the new-maintainer queue: file good
bugreports with your suggested improvements to the package. If you want
to provide proof of your packaging skills then do local packaging and
attach the .diff.gz file from your local package to the bugreport you
file requesting improvements - and point your DAM to those fine
bugreports of yours indicating perfection in the skill of packaging.

I am aware that adopting your package instead of sponsoring it for you
will not get you "points" for getting into Debian. I relly want more
people into Debian, but I believe it to be stupid that "knowing someone
already inside of Debian (or persuade someone unknown) to sponsor you
gets you raises your chances of getting in" is fundamentally wrong.

I believe packages are best maintained by those the package maintainance
scripts was build for, and has access to all communication about the
Debian project, including the secret (and too active IMHO) mailinglist
[EMAIL PROTECTED] .

See http://bugs.debian.org/112118 for a similar discussion.

Kind reagards,

 - Jonas

The debian kernel team will handle most stuff in the kernel-source package
itself, and i have arranged a powerpc pegasos box for simon horms, who should
be back in a week or two, and he will do the actual builds of the kernels. I
will help with the .config maintenance, as best i can, but all this should
really be automated, since the only thing needed is a rebuild in case a new
kernel-source is released.

I don't intent to do an upload with QA as kernel ackages are in deep freeze,
and affect d-i and stuff.

Furthermore the maintainers are already marked as the kernel maintainer team,
so ...

No off to the airport, see you in two days or so ...

Bug#303024: Who should be maintaining kernel-patch-powerpc-{2.4.27,2.6.8}?

2005-05-02 Thread Andrew Pollock
Hi Sven,

You've orphaned kernel-patch-powerpc-2.4.27 and kernel-patch-powerpc-2.6.8,
and I'm a bit confused by the text of #303024 and #303021

Who in your mind should be listed as the maintainer of these packages if not
either yourself or the Debian Kernel Team?

They've been orphaned for nearly a month, and they're at the top of the list
of packages that need to be uploaded with their maintainer set to the QA
group, but this doesn't seem to be the right thing to happen in my mind.

regards

Andrew
