Oops. I did send a message+patch to the "please update to new upstream"
bug, forgot the wnpp bug tho. I now note that on the wnpp bug there is
now someone who wants to take over the package:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=320283;msg=12

Should I tell them about what I have done and how to go about adopting
the package?

Fixed these and more, new package on debian mentors. I guess I assumed
that automake would take care of the autogenerated files.

I have not done any work. However, if you read the mails to the bug,
Bastian Kleineidam maintains an unofficial package we can probably use
as a starting point.

1) Best to cc the wnpp bugreport on such messages, so that when someone looks
into re2c, s/he'll notice your work.

2) you introduce quite some stuff that probably should have been cleaned in
the clean target, like stamp files, .deps/*.Po files, etc... Please make sure
your clean target removes all autogenerated files.

Also, you don't need to ship a prerm that solely has a debhelper token, you
can then simply omit it and debhelper will put its stuff if needed into the
package as prerm anyway. Same for postinst.

  Description : ascii to postscript renderer with unicode support

An ascii to postscript renderer written with the requirements of
non-ascii text in mind. While other, older ascii renderers like a2ps
apparently can not easily be adapted to output accented characters or
non-latin scripts properly, cedilla was written with this requirement
in mind from the start.

Odd, I'm the maintainer for php-clamav :)

The upstream author for php-clamav certainly isn't dead, but there
hasn't been any new releases for a while.

php-clamavlib certainly does look like a seperate source from
php-clamav.

Could you drop me an email when this gets into the archive, and if tehre
hasn't been any update from ustream, and I can't get hold of him, I'll
request the removal of php-clamav from the archive.

Cheers,
Neil

i would argue that their approach wasn't optimal either :).

i don't know a whole lot about this particular software, but unless
there were some strange/technical reason that they couldn't all be
part of the same package, i'd lump them together. it would save
package bloat a bit, which is always a good thing--and i imagine
that if a user were to install one theme, they'd be very likely to
install the other themes anyway and this way they'd get them all
at once.

  Description : 3D realtime strategy on a future Earth

Upon entering the game you land from your transport and establish your
base. Here you conduct research, design and manufacture vehicles, build new
structures and prepare your plans of global conquest. If the game goes
badly you'll end up fighting last ditch battles here to defend your base
from enemy attacks.

Combat is frenetic, with extensive graphical effects and damage to the
terrain and buildings giving rise to flying shrapnel and boulders. Within
the game are many different structures and vehicles. From an initial
Command Centre, you then go on to build Resource Extractors to provide fuel
for Power Generators, which in turn supply energy to Factories, Research
Facilities and weapons emplacements to protect your base. Features:

* 400+ Technologies to research
* 2,000+ different units to design
* 3 Large campaign maps to conquer
* 24 Fast play mission maps for extra action
* Intelligence Display sets objectives dynamically
* Interactive message system
* Fast Play Interface graphically Based
* Quick Screen Navigation
* Fast Find System for units & structures
* Set Factories to constant production
* Automatically send each factory's units to where you want them

I don't intend to upload this game anytime soon. Some license issues have
to be fixed first. In fact this ITP is mainly to avoid someone else is
duplicating work.

I'll make unofficial package to easy installation procedure for
Debian/Ubuntu users.

You can read the full description of auctiongallery if you take a look
at Bug#322873: ITP: auctiongallery -- Generates picture galleries and
HTML templates for auction descriptions

AuctionGallery is a terminal script that creates picture galleries for
the purpose of putting them into auctions like eBay, Yahoo Auctions,
etc. It can also be used automatically generate HTML templates for
auction description. It is aimed at powersellers who have hundreds of
products listed every day and need an efficient way of generating
galleries and organizing pictures in a coherent directory structure.

I created AuctionGallery because I needed simple software to quickly
create picture galleries for the purpose of putting them into auctions.
There are many other similar programs available but none did the job.

Features:

* Automatically organize picture galleries into an easy-to navigate
* directory structure.
* Upload pictures to an FTP site
* Resize images and create thumbnails
* Support for flexible templates

Bug#325824: (no subject)

2005-08-31 Thread William Vera
Hi Paul
Thanks for your commentaries, with respect to that, I textually
mention the author:

"The sscanf issues should be of no danger, as the data they are parsing
is regulated by the kernel / proc fs, and the maximum size of the data
is static, and known on forehand. (In other words, the sscanf's in the
proc parsing code cannot be overflowed AFAIK). I will, however, fix the
sscanf statements so that they don't look like possible errors.

As for circumventing the system, that is possible. As with most systems,
security related or otherwise, there is allways a possible way of
circumventing it. That is the reason for recommending the use of e.g.
kernel hardening patches such as grsecurity. Ninja's strenght lies in the
fact that the attacker generally shouldn't know that ninja is running
on the system. However, I try to make it a tight and secure as I can,
and I will try to fix any problems that are brought to my attention."

It seems that there are no serious conflicts that could affect the
security

Regards!

I see that you prepared a CVS snapshot. Please make sure that it doesn't
introduce more bugs than it fixes, since if you upload it to unstable
and upstream is not responsive, you are responsible for maintaining it
yourself.

Please also consider an intermediate upload (of 0.9.6?), fixing the RC
issue before waiting for final polishing to be completely done. Then,
the bug won't distract Bug Squashers anymore, tempting to work on this
issue and unnecessarily NMUing.

bye,

I am actually working on it, and have packages that fix the RC bug.
I am also intending to make this package included in pkg-gnome
(Sebastien Bacher being aware of that).

The only remaining issue is with the gconf gnome-alsamixer.schemas file

are you still planning to adopt this package? In this case, I strongly
recommend some work here; an RC bug for gnome-alsamixer is open for 2
weeks now. I would also sponsor this package's upload.

Otherwise, I would adopt the package myself, if you decide not to.

bye,
  Roland

Bug#325885: ITP: readahead -- read files into the page cache

2005-08-31 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: readahead
  Version : 1.0.1
  Upstream Author : Thom May <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : ftp://ftp.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/r/readahead/
* License : ???
  Description : read files into the page cache

readahead allows the user to specify a list of files to be read into
the page cache, to accelerate loading of programs.

One of the tricks used by Fedore and Ubuntu to speed up the boot
process is to keep a list of files used during boot, and make sure
these files are loaded into the page cache as early as possible in the
boot process.

http://www.fooishbar.org/blog//tech/ubuntu/fastBootMiniBoF-2004-12-09-13-45.html>
contains some of the story behind the improvements done in ubuntu. We
should implenent this improvement in Debian as well, and I intend to
package this software for debian. Unfortunately, this package seem to
work only with 2.6 kernels.

There is also the related readahead-list package, and I intend to
package this too.

If I undestand the website right it has a client server
modell with different clients (test mode and graphic). This
is not the case with xmms or do I miss something?

xmms2 is still in early developlement, and xmms1 dev most likely will
not stop immediately. The only thing shared between xmms1 and xmms2,
really, is the name. So, using transitional packages to force all
users to change does not seem wise to me.

Bug#325824: issues with ninja

2005-08-31 Thread Paul Wise
Hi,

Some comments some people had on irc.

 ooh: bugs.debian.org/325824
 pabs: nice tool
 indeed
 hmm, that's kind of super trivial to defeat
 heh it has off-by-one buffer overflows all over the place too
because they don't understand how to use field width in sscanf()
 heh
* person3 prefers openbsd's approach with systrace
 still, it can break a lot of script-kiddie toolkits
 out of interest, what happens if you modify your euid/egid to
a permitted user, and then step to root?
 Then you win and the ninja loses, you need to set the real uid
though
* person3 nods
 person2: care to mail the ITP about those issues?
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 What's the ITP?
 sorry, intent to package
 Well, the overflows look harmless
 If you set your process name to something that is 32
characters long it will write a NULL byte into the next array but the
array isn't used for anything
 The other overflows are in config parsing so they don't matter
either
 still, be good to give the packager a heads up about the coding
quality of it
 I would feel silly pointing out the small harmless mistakes
without commenting on how worthless I think the main idea is
 do that too
 That's a lot more work
 when I don't even use debian
 Plus I have a vested interest in keeping linux lame so I can
continue to whine and complain about it :-)
 hhehe

Anyway, in short, these buffer overflows should be fixed before it
enters debian in order to save the security team from doing it later
(even if they are harmless). Not sure what was meant by "super trivial
to defeat", I spose that this should be fixed too if it is actually an
issue.

why can't these templates be provided as part of the auctiongallery
package, or at the least as a single "auctiongallery-themes" package?

Bug#325824: ITP: ninja -- Privilege escalation detection system for GNU\Linux

2005-08-31 Thread William Vera
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: William Vera <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

* Package name: ninja
  Version : 0.1.1
  Upstream Author : Tom Rune Flo <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://forkbomb.org/ninja/
* License : GPL
  Description : Privilege escalation detection system for GNU\Linux

Ninja is a privilege escalation detection and prevention
system for GNU/Linux hosts. While running, it will monitor
process activity on the local host, and keep track of all
processes running as root. If a process is spawned with
UID or GID zero (root), ninja will log necessary informa-
tion about this process, and optionally kill the process
if it was spawned by an unauthorized user.

A "magic" group can be specified, allowing members of this
group to run any setuid/setgid root executable.

Individual executables can be whitelisted. Ninja uses a
fine grained whitelist that lets you whitelist executables
on a group and/or user basis. This can be used to allow
specific groups or individual users access to setuid/set-
gid root programs, such as su(1) and passwd(1).
