Bug#337220: RFP: libxindice-java -- native XML database in Java

2005-11-03 Thread Eric Lavarde
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: libxindice-java
  Version : 1.0
Upstream Author : Name [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://xml.apache.org/xindice
* License : Apache License, Version 2.0
Description : native XML database in Java

From the Apache site:

Apache Xindice is a database designed from the ground up to store XML
data or what is more commonly referred to as a native XML database. The
name is pronounced zeen-dee-chay in your best faux Italian accent. Don't
worry if you get it wrong though, we won't mind. We just care that you
 spell it correctly.

You might be wondering what a native XML database is good for? Well it
pretty much has one purpose, storing XML data. If you don't have any XML
data, don't want any XML data or think XML is the most over-hyped
technology of the new millennium, then Xindice is not for you. We're not
out to change the way data in general is stored, only to provide a good
solution for storing XML data. If you survey your projects and see XML
popping out of every corner, then Xindice might be a real help for
 storing that XML.

The benefit of a native solution is that you don't have to worry about
mapping your XML to some other data structure. You just insert the data
as XML and retrieve it as XML. You also gain a lot of flexibility
through the semi-structured nature of XML and the schema independent
model used by Xindice. This is especially valuable when you have very
complex XML structures that would be difficult or impossible to map to a
 more structured database.

At the present time Xindice uses XPath for its query language and XML:DB
XUpdate for its update language. We provide an implementation of the
XML:DB API for Java development and it is possible to access Xindice
from other languages using built in XML-RPC API. As standards in the XML
database area mature Xindice will include support for those that are
 most important.

Xindice is the continuation of the project that used to be called the
dbXML Core. The dbXML source code was donated to the Apache Software
 Foundation in December of 2001.

My main interest is in the XML:DB part, which is a prerequisite for the
RFP #296117 libjaxme-java -- open source implementation of JAXB, the
specification for Java/XML binding. I would suggest to have a separate
binary package for this one.

Thanks, Eric

Bug#296117: Higher version of jaxme required for FreeMind

2005-11-03 Thread Eric Lavarde - Debian Bugs
Hi,

in the meantime, jaxme comes in version 0.5.
Tests have shown that it doesn't provide yet all features required by
FreeMind (see http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JAXME-61).
Hence a potential packager should either go for version 0.6 (no due date
said the developers) or write a patch covering this specific feature.

Thanks, Eric

Description : Carnegie Mellon University's link grammar parser for English

In Selator, D. and Temperly, D. Parsing English with a Link Grammar
(1991), the authors defined a new formal grammatical system called a
link grammar. A sequence of words is in the language of a link
grammar if there is a way to draw links between words in such a way
that the local requirements of each word are satisfied, the links do
not cross, and the words form a connected graph. The authors encoded
English grammar into such a system, and wrote this program to parse
English using this grammar.
.
This package can be used for linguistic parsing for information
retrieval or extraction from natural language documents. Abiword also
uses it as a grammar checker.

Bug#188456: Bug#314316: Please migrate to libgd version 2

2005-11-03 Thread Martin Michlmayr
Hi Ben,

Do you think you'll be able to take a look at this soon? gccchecker
is now the only package in Debian [1] which required the old libgd-gif
which has been orphaned for over 2.5 years. libgd-gif was a fork of
libgd v1 to add GIF support; libgd 2 has GIF support again (since the
patent expired) and is supported upstream.

I'd really like to get libgd-gif removed from the archive soon so it
would be great it you could take a look at this.

[1] boot-floppies too, but they are still in the archive only for some
stupid license reasons. It has several; broken b-ds already so this
won't stop the removal of libgd-gif.

Oh. Thanks for the reminder. I think that, in fact, it might be
time to remove gccchecker entirely. valgrind is an easier-to-use
replacement that works at least as well in practice. Checker has
not seen any upstream work in a long time, and I don't think it
works with modern versions of GCC.

I will upload a fixed version or file a removal request by
sometime this weekend.

Bug#206886: Planning a libglade to libglade2 transition

2005-11-03 Thread Martin Michlmayr
In June I asked whether it would be possible to start a libglade to
libglade2 transition [1]. As it turns out, migrating applications to
libglade2 can be harder than expected and we can therefore assume that
libglade will stay with us for quite a while.

Unfortunately, libglade has been orphaned for over two years. Given
that so many packages depend on it, it would be nice if libglade had
some maintainer, even if it's just for low-level maintenance.

Is anyone who maintains a package depending on libglade up to this, or
could the GNOME team adopt libglade?

The ltsp-utils package contains ltspadmin and ltspcfg (and others).
These utilities are still needed for LTSP-4.x, and that version of LTSP

I've got a few changes I want to make to ltspadmin and ltspcfg, and it

Hola Christoph Berg!

linSmith is a Smith Charting program, mainly designed for educational use.
As such, there is an emphasis on capabilities that improve the 'showing

If you have any better suggestions, I'd appreciate it.
Seriously, does mainly designed for educational use mean it's
useless to be used for actual engineering practice? I doubt that, but
you pronounce that twice (even in the short description).

Well, I use it for one of the subjects in my university, I wouldn't know
how Smith Charts are used in normal life. I might as well remove the
mention in the short desc and leave it only for the long desc.

Description : a piece of software to make pfb files more compressible

Some Debian packages deliver pfb files (PostScript Type1 -- binary
format). These files are not very compressible, when using normal
compressors like gzip or bzip2. The package contains two programs,
which converts the pfb files into an t1c file, which can be shrinked
to half of its original size. The other program does the reconvert.
This might be very useful, when packaging the software and will be
used by cm-super.
I'll contact the author about clarifying the license issue.

location since the package doesn't yet exist on the BTS). The
matplotlib package
(http://people.debian.org/~zufus/matplotlib/0.83.2/python2.4-matplotlib_0.83.2-3_i386.deb)
should have dependencies on the tetex-base and dvipng packages. The
following python code will not work properly unless both latex and
dvipng are present on the user's system.

 import pylab
 pylab.rc('text', usetex=True)
 pylab.xlabel(r'test $\alpha$')
 pylab.show()

Thank you for the hard work putting this useful package together.

Mike Gilbert

looks like i made a premature assumption. i've properly reported this

Until upstream or someone other can port Waimea to newer versions of

 I'll investigate more later..

Do you still intend to adopt waimea? (This is just a ping, I'm not
 interested in adopting it myself.)

I haven't heard back from you, so I'm assuming you're no longer
interested. If you are, feel free to retitle the bug again.

Thanks,

Matej
