Yep, that's right. I think the team could use quite a few persons :)

I agree with you, after I tested LAT a bit. Many parts are harcoded (the
predefined user/group dialogs for example) and is without SSL not much
useful, also it likes to crash.
I was blended by the fact its version 0.7.x, thinking it's well
developed already, I would say it's more like typical 0.2.x (beta
stuff).
So let's wait and see how it grows :)

Hmm... in that case, I should mention my experience with XyMTeX, an
organic chemistry LaTeX package included in TeX Live. Anyone else who
wants to comment on non-DFSG-free components of TeX Live may as well
follow up to this email.

See Debian bug #304714 where I had originally filed an ITP, and the
thread starting at
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/04/msg00408.html where I asked
about the license. Unfortunately, when I emailed the author for a
license clarification, his reply was as follows:

Just noticed that someone's opened an RFP bug #340555 for XyMTeX, so
CC-ing this there. (To answer a question in the RFP, upstream's email
address is fujitas (at) chem.kit.ac.jp if anyone wants to try convincing
him to license it DFSG-freely.)

Yes, I figured that the LPPL could probably squeak by debian-legal
(otherwise I wouldn't have ITP'ed XyMTeX), but I was more concerned
about the somewhat contradictory-seeming reply from upstream. Possibly
he has misinterpreted the meaning of the LPPL? But when there is a
conflict between the written license in the package and the author's
expressly stated wishes, it seems safest to assume that the latter are
valid.

I attach our entire email exchange (with some extraneous headers
removed). I emailed once, to which he didn't reply; sent a follow-up
email about a week later; and he finally gave the brief reply I quoted
earlier. Apologies for the top-quoting in this exchange.

I wasn't quite sure what to make of his reply so I didn't follow up
further. Probably TeX Live or someone else distributing XyMTeX should
do so, though.

To my reading that thread didn't end in a conclusion that it is not
acceptable.

Furthermore, IMHO, if it would be *not* acceptable, then we would have
to remove all, I repeat *ALL* LPPL licensed packages.

I guess this is something we don't want to have in Debian.

> > I regret to say that only personal redistribution (except CTAN) is

This seems strange, I guess there was a misunderstanding, because the
right to distribute the file unchanged is given in the file itself. Hard
to say since we don't see the mail exchange with Shinsaku Fujita.

So I don't see a serious problem here, only if you also want to remove
most TeX package at all.

Best wishes

Norbert

It's a good idea to provide a shared library while upstream doesn't, but
you should also be careful. Especially, you shouldn't forget to bump the
SONAME by yourself whenever the ABI is changed in a
backwards-incompatible way. If you feel it's going to change too often,
you should have a look at libtool's -release option.

In all cases, don't hesitate to ask me for help about shared libraries.
I'm not really an expert, but I had to deal with several awful libraries
in Debian.

This line seems to be too long to me. Also it refers to IntelliSense and
CodeSense where you cannot assume that they are known. Also do not start
your short description with " is a".

Perhaps something like:
emacs mode providing code hinting for the Erlang language
would be better

Bug#341259: ITP: esense -- ESense (ErlangSense) is a minor emacs mode which provides features similar to IntelliSense or CodeSense in other editors.

2005-11-29 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Another thought:
> * Package name: esense
A lot of emacs modes are named -mode (haskell-mode,
asn1-mode,...) . In this fashion you might also consider naming it
erlang-mode.

> ESense will help developers write Erlang programs more quickly by
> helping them refer to the function exported by a module more quickly.
Remove one of the "more quickly" phrases here.

Best Regards

Ben

Description : Assigns a new name to referenced sub

This module has only one function, which is also exported by default:
 .
 subname NAME, CODEREF
 .
Assigns a new name to referenced sub. If package specification is
omitted in the name, then the current package is used. The return
 value is the sub.
 .
The name is only used for informative routines (caller, Carp, etc).
You won't be able to actually invoke the sub by the given name. To
allow that, you need to do glob-assignment yourself.

Description : A pragma to use the C3 method resolution order algortihm

This is currently an experimental pragma to change Perl 5's standard method
 resolution order from depth-first left-to-right (a.k.a - pre-order) to the
more sophisticated C3 method resolution order.
 .
C3 is the name of an algorithm which aims to provide a sane method resolution
order under multiple inheritence. It was first introduced in the langauge
Dylan, and then later adopted as the prefered MRO (Method Resolution Order)
for the new-style classes in Python 2.3. Most recently it has been adopted as
the 'canonical' MRO for Perl 6 classes, and the default MRO for Parrot objects
 as well.

My interest in GNUstep has waned just as my other time requirements
have waxed. I think other developers can do a better job keeping this
package up-to-date.

Please, don't. Minisip's interfaces are not stable enough yet. A lot of
functionality is about to be added.

Besides, i work *beside* both Erik and Johann, at TSLab/KTH (Stockholm)
-- this means that communication with upstream would be much better.
Being in the last stage of the NM process, i think that i am in a better
position to maintain minisip. This might not be true -- please correct
me in that case.

Thank you for your interest and collaboration, anyway.

Cheers,
J.L.

Bug#326236: ITP: feedparser -- universal feed parser

2005-11-29 Thread Joe Wreschnig
Hey Norbert,

I'm just wondering what's up with the feedparser ITP. I'm working on a
couple projects that use it, and it would be great to not have to
include it separately in yet another package. Is there anything I can do
to help?

I think a large user base is the key on every open source project. If
you want minisip to grow and be usefull to many people (an not only
yourselves), you should try to publish it more, even on Debian.

Well, If you we're thinking of making the package, why didn't you sent
the ITP before?. I don't want to argue, I just want Debian to grow. If
you send the packages soon (15 to 30 days), you may close the ITP, or
else, I'll keep working on it.
