Bug#286806: Serpentine ITP

2006-02-23 Thread Julien Valroff
Hi,

The ITP #286806 being more than 1 year old, I would like to take over
the Serpentine package, if you don't see any objection to it of course.

Sebastian would be my sponsor for this package, as he already maintains
it for Ubuntu.

Are you OK with this proposal?

Cheers,
Julien

Bug#300555: qc-usb-messenger debian package

2006-02-23 Thread Kel Modderman

Hi,

I maintain the external module pool for the Kanotix project.
qc-usb-messenger-source is one of them.

If it can be used in Debian too, i would gladly help maintain this
package based on what I have already developed.

http://kanotix.com/files/debian/pool/main/q/qc-usb-messenger/

Note that i have changed the module name via a patch, this is because
the module shares the same name with the original quickcam usb module.
Beats me why . . .

Thanks, Kel

Of course. I never got around to packaging it as by the time Sid had
the required dependencies, I didn't have a CD writer any more...

Bug#325306: ITP: root -- An object oriented data analysis framework

2006-02-23 Thread Christian Holm Christensen
Followup-For: Bug #325306
Package: wnpp
Owner: Christian Holm Christensen [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I intent to package this software for Debian.

The license of ROOT has recently been changed from a DFSG non-free
license, to the GNU LGPL.

An apt-get repository exists at

  deb http://mirror.phy.bnl.gov/debian-root unstable root
  deb-src http://mirror.phy.bnl.gov/debian-root unstable root

The packages have been built on i386, powerpc, and amd64. A bit of
rudimentary tests have been done on ppc64 and sparc, but with no
success. The packages have previously been built on hurd-i386,
but that's a long time ago.

The packages could really do with some independent testing, especially
on more exotic platforms, like arm, ia64, and so on.

A lot of discussion about these packages is talking place at
the debian-science mailing list. There's also a Wiki page at
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianScienceROOT. On
http://mirror.phy.bnl.gov/debian-root/ there's also a bit.

ROOT has a fairly large user base in High Energy Physics, which however
mostly use Red Hat, Fedora, or SL. None of these distributions ship
ROOT though.

The Debian packages are developed concurently with the RPM packages. In
fact, the same data is used by both packaging systems to make the DEB's
and RPM's. Hence, there's very little difference between the Debian
packages and the RPM's.

Please note, I'm not on debian-devel (as I'm not a maintainer - yet :-),
so please Cc replies to me. Thanks.

Yours,

Description : Syslog event logger library

The EventLog library aims to be a replacement of the simple syslog() API
provided on UNIX systems. The major difference between EventLog and syslog
is that EventLog tries to add structure to messages.
 .
EventLog provides an interface to build, format and output an event record.
The exact format and output method can be customized by the administrator
 via a configuration file.
 .
This package is the runtime part of the library.

What happened to Zaratustra?

I intent to package this software for Debian.

I think the package name is a little too broad.

I'm well-aware that the package name is unfortunate. However, the main
executable is called `root', with utility programs `rootcint',
`root-config', `rootd', `xrootd', and so on. These names, can not be
changed, or the user wouldn't get the expected behaviour.

We already have three roots on Unix: / and the UID/GID 0.

So there's

 1. `root' the path,
 2. `root' the user,
 3. `root' the group,

and now

  4. `root' the application.

Kidding aside. I think, perhaps the package names could change, but the
executable, etc. can not. It would conflict with the general use of
the application. Note, that the executable `root' is just one aspect
of the whole thing. To make a user class persistent/`scriptable',
ROOT uses a dictionary generated by the program `rootcint' - hence users
expect to be able to do

   rootcint -f MyDictionary.cxx -c $(CPPFLAGS) MyHeader.h

That is, a lot of third party software does exactly something like the
above in the build-system.

But it's an established software name. Maybe consider cern-root?

For the meta-package, yes, but does it really matter? Also, although
the main development takes place at CERN, it would be unfair to the
large number of contributors from all over the world to call it
`cern-root'.

Yours,

Bug#326931: RFS: mtasc -- ActionScript 2 to Flash (SWF) compiler

2006-02-23 Thread Paul Wise
Hi all,

I've packaged mtasc, a free compiler for creating SWF files from
ActionScript source code. This is part of a general effort to package
osflash stuff for Debian: http://osflash.org/debian_packaging

One issue with the packaging at the moment, is that I'm not sure where
to put the classpath supplied with mtasc. The following come to mind,
I've stuck to the first one for now.

/usr/share/mtasc/
/usr/share/as/
/usr/share/as2/
/usr/share/actionscript/
/usr/share/actionscript2/

The package version on mentors.d.n is 1.12-0.1. I'll upload a -1 when a
potential sponsor thinks the package is ready to be uploaded.

Description : Command line programs for Particle Image Velocimetry
A collection of programs for recording and interrogating images that
are generated during a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)
experiment. This is a technique to obtain the velocity field of a
fluid flow quantitatively and is performed by tracking tracer
particles that have been seeded to a fluid. The technique is also
applied for observing deformations at surfaces of (solid) bodies. The
 package contains:

Bug#354156: ITP: libsmart-comments-perl -- comments that do more than just sit there

2006-02-23 Thread Niko Tyni
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Niko Tyni [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: libsmart-comments-perl
  Version : 1.0.2
Upstream Author : Damian Conway [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL :
http://mirrors.kernel.org/CPAN/modules/by-authors/id/DCONWAY/Smart-Comments-v1.0.2.tar.gz
* License : GPL/Artistic
Description : comments that do more than just sit there

Smart comments provide an easy way to insert debugging and tracking code
into a program. They can report the value of a variable, track the
progress of a loop, and verify that particular assertions are true.
 .
Best of all, when you're finished debugging, you don't have to remove them.
Simply commenting out the use Smart::Comments line turns them back into
regular comments. Leaving smart comments in your code is smart because if you
needed them once, you'll almost certainly need them again later.

Bug#347807: Prelimary Debian Packages

2006-02-23 Thread Joachim Breitner
Hi,

As promised, I worked on packaging XaraLX for debian. I have put a
simple package for debian unstable on
http://people.debian.org/~nomeata/xaralx/xaralx_0.svn20060223-1_i386.deb

Please not that the source package is not yet available, as the source
is not yet released.

Please report non-packaging bugs to the xaralx mailing list, other bugs
to me.

Greetings,

PS: I'll be offline the next week, so if it doesn't work for you, I
guess you'll have to wait. :-)

Bug#354174: RFH: nas -- The Network Audio System

2006-02-23 Thread Steve McIntyre
Package: wnpp
Version: N/A; reported 2006-02-23
Severity: normal

I've not used nas in quite a while, and due to other commitments I'm
not going to have too much time for it in the near future.

More background:

 * the nas source package builds several binary packages
 * currently 5 open bugs
 * upstream are a delight to work with, and are especially responsive
to accepting Debian patches; the current diff from upstream is
   _tiny_

Hence, I feel this package would be ideal for a new maintainer to help
out with - I'd be happy to do some mentoring, work through some bugs
with another person and sponsor uploads where necessary.

2006-02-23 Thread Steve McIntyre
Package: wnpp
Version: N/A; reported 2002-01-30
Severity: wishlist

cvs is a commonly-used (still) source control system. It has a large
number of users and quite a large number of bugs to match. I've not
had enough time to adequately work on cvs lately, and if anything
that's only going to get worse.

However, as cvs is quite an important package to its regular users
(like me!) I'd rather not simply orphan it. Instead, I'd like to
volunteer it as a package suitable for co-maintenance with one or more
new maintainers. I'd be quite happy to mentor such NMs and/or sponsor
uploads where necessary.
