Bug#323420: License issues with metasploit-framework

If there is, then you (we) have to check whether it defines a licensing scheme which is DFSG-free and compatible with the rest of the framework. If there isn't, then it's more or less OK, with the above-mentioned warning (being explicit would be far better). > > There is one with > > * The contents of this file constitute Original Code as defined in > * and are subject to the Apple Public Source License Version 1.1 (the > * "License"). What was analysed on debian-legal was (at least) Apple's APSL v2.0: definitely non-free (and GPLv2-incompatible). This is APSL v1.1: I don't know if this version has ever been reviewed on debian-legal. If someone finds the time to look at it, it would be useful to assess its DFSG-freeness and {GPLv2/Artistic}-compatibility. If it's not {GPLv2/Artistic}-compatible, then upstream should be persuaded to relicense or replace the file. Or possibly Debian can substitute the file with a {GPLv2/Artistic}-compatible drop-in replacement (if at all possible). > > There is a zlib implementation with the following license > > === [...] > === This is actually the so-called zlib license: DFSG-free and GPLv2-compatible, AFAICS. > > And my favourite > > # Yo yo, this be da socketNinja. > # Alpha-2.0 release > # Distribute and get a visit from tireIronNinja > > which I don't think is free. It lacks (at least) permission to modify and distributed modified versions (see DFSG#3). It doesn't even clearly grant permission to distribute (see DFSG#1): "Distribute" seems like an order, not a permission! I don't understand the visit part... :-/ Upstream should be contacted and asked to relicense this file. Or, as usual, this file could be dropped or replaced. > > There are also binary files distributed in the tarball, these are not > meant to be compiled, as they are for executing on the target > computer. I'm not sure how this sits, as they are obviously not the > preferred form of modification, and some don't include the source they > were compiled from. If the actual source for those binaries is not available, we are going very far from DFSG compliance (see DFSG#2). Upstream should be got in touch with and asked for source under a DFSG-free and {GPLv2/Artistic}-compatible license. Alternatively those binaries should be dropped or replaced. > > Now, we could contact upstream and get them to include proper headers > etc., but I wanted to know how much of this was unsuitable for > distribution, as if it leaves a severely crippled package then it's > not really worth it. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth fixing this melting pot of copyrights and licenses. Whatever you decide,

Hi free Experimental version of package is ready. You can test it and upload it. However, there is a problem. The patch works for 2.6.17 but not for 2.6.17.1 or later. None of them works. With 2.6.17, patch was applied in source 2.6.17-2). This doesn't look DFSG-free to me. Most of the other, rather innovative clauses, have problems as well. If the click-through part must be enforced by redistributors, it's not even suitable for the non-free section. I can understand why upstream is doing this, but I don't think the result is still free software. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Adam Borowski <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> * Package name: chameleon-cursor-theme [1] Version : 0.5-1 Upstream Author : Giuseppe Benigno * URL : http://www.{gnome,kde,xfce[2]}-look.org/content/show.php?content=38459 * License : GPL Description : a modern but not gaudy X11 mouse theme Package comes with 15 different mouse themes for X11. 5 colors (anthracite, sky blue, dark sky blue, white, pearl) 3 different sizes (small, regular and large) . Preview: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=38459 The default, industrial-cursor-theme, comes in just one size. The two other good themes we have, comixcursors and crystalcursors are really compatible only with desktop themes matching ".*k.*". xcursor-themes are only so-so, so adding one more package won't hurt... Speaking from a more complete point of view, the only themes worth being packaged left on http://www.foo-look.org are perhaps silver and yellowdot -- the rest is either redundant or ugly. Of course, you do know that my opinion is the highest authority in the realm of aesthethics. [1]. Should I stick to *-cursor-theme or *cursors? Or keep the upstream name, chameleon Xcursors? [2]. Alas, they don't seem to support WindowMaker or BlackBox :p -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#378750: RFP: nmm - Network-Integrated Multimedia Middleware
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist * Package name:nmm Version: 0.9.1 Upstream Author: several * URL: http://www.networkmultimedia.org * License: GPL and LGPL Description: Network-Integrated Multimedia Middleware Multimedia is still not well supported in most Unix environments in contrast to other OS-platforms where several multimedia infrastructures are established. However these models adopt a PC-centric approach, where all multimedia processing takes place within a single computer. The network is, at best, used for streaming data transmission. Since there is a strong trend towards networked multimedia devices (like networked cameras, audio devices, PDAs, celluar phones, settop-boxes, and PCs) these centralized approaches are becoming obsolete. The goal of our work is to design and develop a multimedia middleware, which considers the network as an integral part and enables the intelligent use of devices distributed across a network. We are currently designing and implementing a network-integrated multimedia infrastructure for Linux (as well as other operating systems). Our unified architecture offers a simple and easy to use interface for applications to integrate multimedia functionality. Therefore, it can be used as enabling technology for traditional multimedia applications, but also for ubiquitous computing and mobile computing. The NMM project is a joint R&D effort of the Computer Graphics Lab at Saarland University and Motama, a spin-off company of Saarland University, Germany. The result of our work is available as Open Source (LGPL and GPL). Commercial services and support for developing specific solutions based on NMM technology are provided by Motama. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Yes, it is as people are thinking of removing translations from packages due to size considerations and moving them to some sort of translation packages, the same will probably be true for documentation translations. Thus having one (or a couple of) Dutch translation package(s) instead of translations in almost all packages... Bug#323420: License issues with metasploit-framework
Hi, there is an open ITP on metasploit-framework (#323420), and the owner Luciano asked me to contact this list about some of the license issues involved with the package. At the moment the framework is at version 2, and is released under a dual license of GPL v2 and Perl Artistic. There are a lot of contributed files in the package. Most have the following header ;This file is part of the Metasploit Exploit Framework ;and is subject to the same licenses and copyrights as ;the rest of this package. and some have no license header. There are a few that say the following # This file is part of the Metasploit Framework and may be redistributed # according to the licenses defined in the Authors field below. In the # case of an unknown or missing license, this file defaults to the same # license as the core Framework (dual GPLv2 and Artistic). Worms was created in 1990, the goal of the game consisting of a several teams of "worms" fighting to the death on a 2D map. Wormux is heavily influenced by all games in this genre, including Scorched Earth and Liero. . Wormux is free software clone of this game concept. Though currently under heavy development, it is already very playable, with lots of weapons (Dynamite, Baseball Bat, Teleportation, etc.). There are also lots of maps available for your battling pleasure! Wormux takes the genre to the next level, with great customisation options leading to great gameplay. There is a wide selection of teams, from the Aliens to the Chickens. Also, new battlefields can be downloaded from the Internet, making strategy an important part of each battle. . Bug#347558: Packaging try
In case anyone is interested I made a (VERY preliminary) attempt at packaging the whole apparmor suite (except the kernel patch which will be added soon). The basic functionality is there, although various details like the event logging daemon are still buggy and the profiles section is only roughly worked on and needs an overhaul for debian. I personally think that the number of package doesn't matter too much. I'm starting to move most of my packages to there, one by one, and appreciate any help done by everyone. Also, there's a lot of ideas to improve the packaging, testing and like in collab so in my POV makes a lot of sense to move things there. -- O T A V I OS A L V A D O R - E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] UIN: 5906116 GNU/Linux User: 239058 GPG ID: 49A5F855 Home Page: http://www.freedom.ind.br/otavio - "Microsoft gives you Windows ... How about we start some alioth project for it and put it into svn or something? Should make things easier. Anyway, I'll try and look at it this evening.
