There's no need for a resolution to decide that executable machine code
- whether or not you call it firmware[1] - is software. The relevant
GR is 2006-007, which decided against making a permanent exception for
firmware in the kernel.

[1] The term firmware should apply only to software that is installed
in non-volatile memory such as ROM or flash, which Debian does not need
to distribute. What we're talking about here is software for peripheral
processors.

Archive size not so much a concern as archive *quality*. There is
trouble maintaining the quality level reasonable for each packages when
there are so many packages.

Bug#445866: ITP: perforce -- closed source revision control system

2007-10-11 Thread Russ Allbery
Jon Dowland [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

 It seems every other semi-controversial ITP gets an obligatory why
 package this when we have X,Y,Z instead? reply, although seemingly
 never from an ftp-master or mirror maintainer or anyone else who is
 actually impacted by archive sizes :-(

Consider it an expression of increasing resistance designed to make people
think twice. I think it's useful even when not enforced. If one is
convinced that the package is needed, one can always go ahead anyway, but
the resistance provides useful feedback and sometimes identifies packages
that are really unnecessary for reasons that the prospective packager
didn't realize.

* Package name: docbook-xsl-xalan
  Version : 1.00
  Upstream Author : Norman Walsh and members of the DocBook project.
* URL : http://wiki.docbook.org/topic/DocBookXsltExtensions
* License : MIT/X

  Description : Java extensions for use with DocBook XML stylesheets (Xalan)

These are Java extensions for use with the DocBook XML stylesheets
and the Xalan XSLT engine. You need these extensions to enable e.g.
the callouts and linenumbering extensions of the docbook-xsl suite.
.
In the past these extensions were shipped with the docbook-xsl
tarball

I already began packaging at
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/debian-xml-sgml/packages/docbook-xsl-xalan/trunk/?rev=0sc=0.

Regards, Daniel

Bug#434583: contact about tbb

2007-10-11 Thread Arthur Loiret
Hello,

I've already contacted you by mail two months ago to ask you if you were
interested in co-maintaining tbb, but you didn't answer so please let me
know if you are still interested in packaging tbb.

Otherwise, I have an almost ready package here:
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/t/tbb20/tbb20_20070719-1.dsc

Have a nice day,

Arthur.

Sorry, got lost in the noise and mountain of work.

tbb is an interesting package. I have no problem with co-maintaining it
as I do not have the expertise with it. I've attended Intel's Threading
Building Blocks webinars earlier this year - my only knowledge of tbb :)
It does have some very promising aspects in many applications together
with other thread tools from Intel (ie. the non-free ones!)

If you would like, I can sponsor this package for you.

You may reply to this email in private.

Sincerely,
Adam
