Well, you're right, I should update the full description too.

Is it necessary to say it's graphical provided that it's based on
GTK+?

How about ...

"Graphical GTK+-based client for the Last.fm online radio"

Thanks for your suggestions

I thought this one didn't work - is it saying it's a Mincho, which
is based on a font? Make it simpler... either:

Japanese TrueType Mincho font based on Meiji-era designs

or move the historical details to the long description and say:

antique-looking Japanese TrueType Mincho font

(there's no need for initial capitalisation in short descriptions).
Alternatively you could say:

Meiji-era Japanese TrueType Mincho font
Meiji-style Japanese TrueType Mincho font

(The first implies that it really is from the 19th century - that
it's the original font, converted into .ttf format. The second
implies it's a modern font based on the look of 19th-century ones.)

I hate to sound like a grammar Nazi, but are there any non-graphical
GTK+ apps?

IOW, isn't "Graphical" redundant, and not needed?

Bug#462091: Fwd: RFC/RFS: zerofree - zero free blocks from ext2/3 file-systems

2008-02-06 Thread Thibaut Paumard

Réenvoyé-De : [EMAIL PROTECTED]
De : Thibaut Paumard <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date : 6 février 2008 17:25:15 HNEC
À : Debian Mentors <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Objet : RFC/RFS: zerofree - zero free blocks from ext2/3 file-systems

Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package "zerofree".

Note that I have set the Dm-Upload-Allowed field. This package is
unrelated to the work I usually do with my sponsor Christoph Haas,
which is why I prefer to ask here rather than to him.

* Package name: zerofree
  Version : 1.0.1
  Upstream Author : Ron Yorston
* URL : http://intgat.tigress.co.uk/rmy/uml/
* License : GPL-2+
  Programming Lang: C
  ITP : http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?
bug=462091

  Section : admin

Description: zerofree - zero free blocks from ext2/3 file-systems
Zerofree finds the unallocated, non-zeroed blocks in an ext2 or ext3
file-system and fills them with zeroes. This is useful if the
device on

which this file-system resides is a disk image. In this case,
depending on the type of disk image, a secondary utility may be able
to reduce the size of the disk image after zerofree has been run.
 .
The usual way to achieve the same result (zeroing the unallocated
blocks) is to run "dd" do create a file full of zeroes that takes up
the entire free space on the drive, and then delete this file. This
has many disadvantages, which zerofree alleviates:

You've mixed the short and long descriptions. See section 3.4 of the

Yeah, that's what I think too, I copied Christian's suggestion and
forgot to remove 'Graphical':

"GTK+-based client for the Last.fm online radio"

Bug#464400: ITP: opencascade -- CAE platform library and scripting engine

2008-02-06 Thread Adam C Powell IV
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

Package name: opencascade
Version: 6.2.0
Author: Open Cascade SAS (OCC), a French software services company
URL: http://www.opencascade.org/
License: Open CASCADE Technology Public License, includes triangle with
non-free source
Description: CAE platform library and scripting engine

Greetings,

I am packaging OpenCASCADE, a powerful computer-aided engineering (CAE)
platform library and scripting engine. It includes computer-aided
design (CAD) and visualization features, as well as some meshing for
analysis. It also comes with its own scripting engine.

The license appears to be free, though upstream interprets it as
non-free, and the source includes the non-free "triangle" program. See
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2007/12/msg00066.html for details.

The current package is at http://lyre.mit.edu/~powell/opencascade/ . I
plan to split the package using Jason Kraftcheck's scripts (see
http://lists.debian.org/debian-science/2008/01/msg00013.html and
http://lists.debian.org/debian-science/2008/01/msg00024.html for
details) before uploading.

This is a build-depend for Salomé which I ITP'd (bug 457075).

You can probably drop "open source" which is obvious in a Debian
context.

I'd say that "enterprise content management" is enough for the synopsis.

Then we'd need to change quite a few package descriptions :-)

$ dpkg -l | grep -i gtk

Not to mention all other packages with similar technical words in
their descriptions: ncurses, Qt, PHP, etc.

Also, if a user doesn't know what GTK+ is, he/she probably won't
expect a radio player being non-graphical ...

There are very few non-graphical Last.fm clients around, Vagalume is
not special for that :)

As I'm not into IPv6 anymore, I request an adopter for the radvd package.
The new maintainer should be knowledgable in IPv6 and C programming and
actually use radvd (which I have stopped to do, hence the RFA).

The package description is:
IPv6 has a lot more support for autoconfiguration than IPv4. But
for this autoconfiguration to work on the hosts of a network, the
routers of the local network have to run a program which answers
the autoconfiguration requests of the hosts.
 .
On Linux this program is called radvd, which stands for Router
ADVertisement Daemon. This daemon listens to router solicitations (RS)
and answers with router advertisement (RA). Furthermore unsolicited
RAs are also sent from time to time.

Bug#464444: O: megahal -- conversation simulator that can learn as you talk to it

2008-02-06 Thread Laurent Fousse
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I intend to orphan the megahal package.

The package description is:
Conversation simulators are computer programs which give the appearance of
conversing with a user in natural language. Such programs are effective
because they exploit the fact that human beings tend to read much more
meaning into what is said than is actually there; we are fooled into reading
structure into chaos, and we interpret non-sequitur as valid conversation.
 .
MegaHAL differs from conversation simulators such as Eliza in that it uses
a Markov Model to learn how to hold a conversation. It is possible to
teach MegaHAL to talk about new topics, and in different languages.
 .
This package contains the megahal binary, and for your scripting
pleasure modules for perl, python and tcl.

Bug#462631: Linking with libraries already in Debian...

2008-02-06 Thread Francesco Poli
Hi!

Thanks for your ITP bug regarding Paraview!
I hope the packaging is going on well.

I wonder if you managed to link Paraview against (and make it work
properly with) libraries already packaged and included in Debian.

Last time I checked, it seemed Paraview could not be linked with
already installed libraries (without applying heavy modifications).
I think that, from a maintainability/code-duplication point of view,
shipping a special copy of VTK and TclTk just for Paraview would
not be acceptable. Unfortunately though, last time I checked, Paraview
shipped with special versions of those libraries that had to be
recompiled:
http://public.kitware.com/pipermail/paraview/2006-October/003881.html

I hope the situation has improved in the meanwhile: for instance,
Paraview was going to switch from TclTk to Qt and it seems this
transition has already been completed... Is it now possible to easily
link Paraview against an already installed copy of VTK?
Or did you modify CMakeLists.txt in order to let Paraview compile and
link against debianized VTK?

Hi,

I would like to recycle this ITP. I already asked Upstream and they think a
Debian package would be great.

Cheers, Adrian

I'm going to adopt the package, since I regularly use it.
I plan to upgrade it to current upstream version (0.10cvs6)

Yes. Most package description aren't really great and forget that they
should be targeted for end users. The Developers Reference gives
numerous hints about the Right Way to write package descriptions (and
not only when it makes recommendations about syntax)

Let me clarify.

Saying that something is GTK-based is probably meaningful for the
average geek. It means nothing for the average user. This is what I
call jargon.

Our package descriptions should help all users to answer the simple
questions "what is this package good for?" and "Do I need this
package?"

Being GTK-based is not the most important mention for this ad we
shouldn't assume that everybody knows that it means "graphical" or
"GUI".

That doesn't necessarily mean to *remove* GTK (it has some meaning for
some of our usersand some even decide whether a package is good
for them, based on this)...but we shouldn't assume this is *enough*.

(not to mention debtags, by the way)

I suggest "s/Debian/.deb"

That would prevent derivative distributions to embark something that
is less meaningful for them.
