Hi Justin,

Actually, yes. We exchanged some mails on the subject in April 2006.
Back then, you had some difficulties with your gpg key, but these were
fixed later. Still, I can't see any later upload by you.

I was extrapolating from the state of the kdrill package. That one has
several open bugs, all seemingly unattended, and the package was NMUed
several times since the last maintainer upload.

Again, sorry. I don't mean to take the package away from you for the
sake of it, I had the impression that it was (very likely to be)
unmaintained. If you think you can honestly say you are maintaining
the package, please close the orphan bug.

* There're a lot of Fortran files which have nothing but a listing of
authors, for example
  Authors: W. J. Cody and L. Stoltz
   Argonne National Laboratory
I neither found a copyright statement nor a license for those files,
The Netlib faq says:
Most netlib software packages have no restrictions on their use but we
recommend you check with the authors to be sure.

* some of the .m files contain copyright statements from Samit Basu and
other people, but no license.

https://ssl.recluse.de/svn/debian/packages/freemat/trunk/ contains the
first bits of packaging, but it's neither complete nor bugfree.

If anybody is willing to work on the package, I'll be happy to sponsor it.

An update on freemat:

I've asked upstream to clarify copyrights and to add missing licenses to
several files, unfortunately this didn't happen yet. As I don;t have the
time to run behind the author, I'm giving up the idea to package freemat.

"apparently"?

Did you attempt to email me even once, before making this determination?

?

There are no outstanding bugs for this package. So it's not as if I am "not
responding to bug reports" or anything.

Your unilateral action in declaring this package 'orphaned', is thereby
rather rude.

sextractor is in fine condition and I'm able to deal with problems that
come up. DS9 is in a constant state of flux and I expect to eventually
restart packaging from scratch. If you want to consider it orphaned,
that's okay. But I think the case is different for sextractor.

Description: image display tool for astronomy
DS9 is an application for astronomical imaging and data
 visualization.
 .
DS9 is the modern imtool used by astronomers. It is most
distinguished by its support for displaying images of high dynamic
range (such as 16 bit greyscale FITS files). Whereas many other
tools will only read an approximation to such files, DS9 works in
full precision, and uses various display parameters to map input data
into 8 bit data which can be displayed on the screen.
 .
Available parameters for the mapping include: brightness, contrast,
false color, and nonlinear input mapping (such as logarithm, square
 root, square, etc.)
 .
Although it may be useful in other fields, DS9 includes a fair number
of features specific to astronomy. There is an astronomical "name
resolver" which allows a lookup of an arbitrary named object to its
coordinates. Given the coordinates of a field, online archive
servers may be queried, and an image retrieved. DS9 thusly
 implements a preliminary "Virtual Observatory".
 .
DS9 is entirely controllable from external programs ("XPA"), which
simplifies complex tasks such as data acquisition, realtime display,
 and batch analysis.
 .
If images include WCS (World Coordinate System) keywords, then they
may be "blinked" to search for moving or changing objects.

Bug#465876: O: u++ -- Object-oriented concurrent language extensions for C++

2008-02-15 Thread rcbilson
> The current maintainers of u++, Richard C. Bilson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,
> and Matthieu Delahaye <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> are apparently not active
> anymore. Therefore, I orphan this package now.

This is an appropriate action. It had been my intention to declare my
intent to orphan within the next month.

I had hoped that Matthieu would be able to do one more package upload,
but this seems unlikely. I have updated the package for the latest
release of u++ (5.5.0); the updated package resolves the outstanding
Debian bugs. My apologies to the community for not having sought out a
more responsive uploader. The latest revision of the package is available
at http://plg.uwaterloo.ca/~uSystem/pub/uSystem/debian/

I no longer have the time or resources to continue maintaining the
package, but I'm happy to provide advice to a new maintainer.

Richard

Description: pool-based Debian package archiver
DebPool is a package archive maintenance utility designed with a goal of
removing any dependency on code not shipped as part of the core Debian
 system.
 .
It is capable of all of the following:
   * Tracking multiple distributions (however, it does *not* include
 unstable -> testing promotion scripts).
   * Generating Release files (requires libdigest-{md5,sha1}-perl)
   * Verifying package signatures (requires gnupg).
   * Signing release files (requires Release files and gnupg).
   * Running in single-pass or daemon modes.
 .
DebPool is intended to be a lightweight replacement for the full Debian
archival scripts, in the tradition of debarchive and mini-dinstall, but
using a pool layout and avoiding external dependencies.

Description: Logfile rotator for web servers
A simple program that reads log messages from its input and writes
them to a set of output files, the names of which are constructed
using template and the current date and time. The template uses the
same format specifiers as the Unix date command (which are the same
as the standard C strftime library function).
 .
It intended to be used in conjunction with a Web server, such as
Apache, to split the access log into daily or monthly logs:
 .
   TransferLog "|/usr/bin/cronolog /var/log/apache/%Y/access.%Y.%m.%d.log"
 .
A cronosplit script is also included, to convert existing
traditionally-rotated logs into this rotation format.

Description: Prints calendars
Gcal displays a calendar for a month or a year, eternal holiday lists
and fixed date lists, in many ways. The program correctly omits the
dates that were skipped when the current Gregorian calendar replaced
 the earlier Julian calendar.
 .
Apart from the usual and well known calendar functions like the
output of a month or a year calendar sheet, or the output of an eternal
holiday list, Gcal offers the facility to display fixed dates on the
day of their occurrence and to remind or inform the user about them.
So it's imaginable after booting the computer or starting the work
session, that the user is informed on screen or by means of electronic
mail, about all holidays or appointments which are observed or
 scheduled for that day.

f2c translates FORTRAN 77 (with some extensions) into C, so that it can

 .
This is an actively maintained FORTRAN to C translator and with the
fort77 frontend provides an ideal way to compile FORTRAN routines
as black boxes (for example for invocation from C). Source level
debugging facilities are not available, and error messages are not as
 well developed as in g77.

Bug#465889: O: libtar -- C library for manipulating tar archives

2008-02-15 Thread Christoph Berg
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

The current maintainer of libtar, James Morrison <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,
is apparently not active anymore. Therefore, I orphan this package now.

Maintaining a package requires time and skills. Please only adopt this
package if you are *sure* you will have enough time and attention to
work on it.

If you want to be the new maintainer, please see
http://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp/index.html#howto-o for detailed
instructions how to adopt a package properly.

Bug#465872: RFP: chessdb -- Excellent chess database and analysis software. GPL successor to dead scid package

2008-02-15 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: chessdb
  Version : x.y.z
  Upstream Author : Name <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.example.org/
* License : (GPL, LGPL, BSD, MIT/X, etc.)
Programming Lang: (C, C++, C#, Perl, Python, etc.)
Description : Excellent chess database and analysis software. GPL
successor to dead scid package

(Include the long description here.)

Nearly one year ago a volunteer packaged this software and uploaded it
in search of a sponsor. The software is excellent, the package works and
it is really disappointing that it did not get sponsored. See bug 408118
If there are chess-loving DDs who read this, would one of them please
sponsor the package?

It is one of the best chess database/analysis programs, built on the
dead package scid but with major extensions and improvements. The
current situation (no package in Debian) seems like an easy
win for the Debian community.
