  Code Aster is all-purpose FEM simulation software for structural

Please expand FEM to Finite Element Method. Also, is this a tool that
provides a graphical user interface, or is it a command-line tool? What
features make it so good at helping to create command files?

 that tarball, of which:

 There's really no point in distributing this tarball-of-tarballs, so
 we're packaging the four unique tarballs from within it as separate
 packages.

You are absolutely right.

  It is unclear to me what this software can do. Can I generate finite
  element models with it? Or is it just a way to start simulations on a
  backend? Can I view models, or meshes, or results of calculations? What
  kind of finite elements are supported? If this is a frontend, is the
  backend also packaged for Debian?

 It's the build system and graphical interface for the aster binary(ies)
 built in the aster package.

Ah, so there will be other packages that will Build-Depend on astk?

 Paolo Cignoni writes (Re: Bug#426581: meshlab - anyone still working on
 this):

  After I built it (on lenny), I ran meshlab from an xterm. It opened
   an entirely blank override-redirect pale grey window covering the top
   left area of my display, as well as the main window. What is that
   blank window for ? Can it be got rid of ?

  This is not a the exepected behaviour. if meshlab is invoked without any
  mesh it should ask for a file to open with the standard filedialog.

 So as a test today I'm running
   meshlab t.stl
 where t.stl is a file generated by a prograam of my own.

 I get two windows. One is the main meshlab window which has my object
 in in, the various menus, and so on. That is fine.

 The other window is blank, 800x700, at the top left corner of the
 screen, and is somehow bypassing the X11 window manager. xwininfo
 says this:

  xwininfo: Window id: 0xc40009b Plugin

Gotcha.
It's a problem of the interacton between QT and your window manager,
On win mac and some other wm this windows do not appear.
the creation code is the following one

void MainWindow::createStdPluginWnd()
{
stddialog = new MeshlabStdDialog(this);
stddialog-setAllowedAreas (Qt::NoDockWidgetArea );
addDockWidget(Qt::RightDockWidgetArea,stddialog);
stddialog-setFloating(true);
stddialog-hide();
}

I do not know how to patch this. I could ad a SetGeometry to make it
very small, but it seems me a workaroud.

   If I ask for `Edit / Measure' I can't get the rest of the edit menu
   back without clicking on the measuring tape in the toolbar. I assume
   this is unintentional and is an upstream UI bug.

  ahem . probably it is not a very intuitive pattern of action but eventually
  it was intentional

  http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Interactive_editing_tools

 I think this should be addressed at some point. If one is not
 supposed to be able to drive the program from the menu then there is
 little point having the menu item. Perhaps it would be better if the
 menu items (and indeed the other tools in the toolbar) were not greyed
 out ? Selecting them could then go straight from the old mode to the
 new.

Yes it is a mess, the whole activation/deactivation mechanism of the
plugins will change
in 1.2.

   If I run the program with --help or -h, it tries to open them as
   files. It ought at least to bomb out with a message saying please
   refer to the meshlab wiki (with a URL).

  quite a good idea.
  if started with -h or --help it could directly open the meshlab wiki by
  using the defaul os browser.

 I don't think this would be appropriate in Debian. Users would expect
 --help to print some information to stdout. So a simple message with
 a URL in it, or some documentation, would be ideal from our point of
 view.

ok. np.
I'll do this in this weekend.

   lintian says:
  ...
  I raise another issue:

  U3D. meshlab, to export files into u3d format, needs a binary
  (idtfconverter), that is compiled out of the u3d open source library.
  So i see that here there is another dependency here and perhaps there is the
  need for someone to NMU sourceforge.net/projects/*u3d*

 I think for Debian this isn't critical, if meshlab at least doesn't
 crash if the binary isn't found. Although of course importing u3d
 files would be good.

 (`NMU' isn't the right term. You can probably just say `package'.)

Ok,
currently if the binary is missing it just report that the exporting
has failed becouse the binary is missing.

Cheers
and thanks again for you help.

  by contacting some upstream server to check.

  Paulo, is that correct ?

  I'm afraid that it is not acceptable for a program packaged for Debian
  to phone home like this and that feature must be disabled before we
  upload it even to unstable.

Yes, it phones home regularly.

It is well written in the docs
http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Licenses

 in the windows installer users have to agree on that before the
installation begins.
It seems to me that it is not against the Debian social contract nor
against the Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG).

If I am wrong forgive my ignorance. In any case i need this feature so
i could disable it but only for Debian builds.
Is it possible to know at compile time if the runnining system is a
100% debian?
I mean, i need that feature, and disabling it for 'easy' distribution
like ubuntu seems me non very reasonable.
People installing skype could also tolerate meshlabs that phones home.

   Upstream.

  If I provide a patch will you incorporate it in your package ? I can
  do it as a bzr branch or an emailed diff, whichever you prefer. I
  think this is quite important. The behaviour atm is rather poor if
  you're trying just to figure out how to run the program.

An emailed diff is ok,

Thanks

Bug#465120: Comments from w3af creator

2008-02-23 Thread Andres Riancho
I'm really interested to see w3af being packaged in debian, the only
problem I see is that some of the dependencies of w3af aren't a debian
package yet; I don't know how the debian distribution handles this
situations.

On a related subject, I would like to see beta6 being packaged instead
of beta5, so please wait a month or so until I release beta6 and then
create the debian package. In the meantime we can talk about the
dependencies, maybe package some of them, and make some tests with the
SVN version that is available right now.

Cheers,

  Description : The Bub's Brothers
 This is a new striking n-multiplayer crazy clone of the famous
 Bubble Bobble game. As everyone knows, dragons throw bubbles. These
 ones throw quite large and solid bubbles. Indeed, dragons reach the
 upper parts of a levels not only by simply jumping on higher platforms;
 at times, such conveniently placed platforms will not be provided.
 Instead, you can temporarily use bubbles as jump grounds.
 .
 It features:
  * 1 to 10 players -- the best fun is with at least 3 players.
  * Over-the-network game and/or up to 3 players on the same computer.
  * Completely original crazy bonuses.
  * Capture other players in a bubble.
  * New levels, including a random level generator

* Package name: infernal
  Version : 0.81
  Upstream Author : Sean Eddy
* URL : http://infernal.janelia.org/
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C, C++
  Description : RNA sequence comparisons

 Infernal (INFERence of RNA ALignment) is for searching DNA sequence
 databases for RNA structure and sequence similarities. It is an
 implementation of a special case of profile stochastic context-free
 grammars called covariance models (CMs). A CM is like a sequence
 profile, but it scores a combination of sequence consensus and RNA
 secondary structure consensus, so in many cases, it is more capable of
 identifying RNA homologs that conserve their secondary structure
 more than their primary sequence.
 .
 The tool is an integral component of the Rfam database.
 .

The package seems basically fine and will appear in the Debian-Med svn
in the next few minutes to fish for comments.

Kind regards

Steffen

* Package name: qlandkarte
  Version : 0.5.3
  Upstream Author : Oliver Eichler [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://qlandkarte.sourceforge.net/
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C++
  Description : manage and visualize GPS data and upload/download to GPSr

 This package provides a free-software replacement of the commercial Garmin
 MapSource program. It supports download and upload of GPS maps, waypoints
 and tracks to a number Garmin GPS devices (e.g. eTrex Legend, Venture and
 GPSmap60/76).
 .
 QLandkarte does and will not support unlocking of commercial maps. Due to the
 lack of free routable maps, there is also no routing support.

There is already an inofficial Debian package around, but only in binary
form and not policy compliant.

This package might be a candidate for the DebianGis team, although it is
not listed on the 'wanted' page in the wiki.

* Package name: pyglet
  Version : 1.0~beta3
  Upstream Author : Alex Holkner [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://www.pyglet.org
* License : BSD
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : a cross-platform windowing and multimedia library for Python

Description stolen from webpage (not a proper long descr. yet):

pyglet provides an object-oriented programming interface for developing games
and other visually-rich applications for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Some of
the features of pyglet are:
- No external dependencies or installation requirements. For most application
  and game requirements, pyglet needs nothing else besides Python, simplifying
  distribution and installation.
- Take advantage of multiple windows and multi-monitor desktops. pyglet allows
  you to use as many windows as you need, and is fully aware of multi-monitor
  setups for use with fullscreen games.
- Load images, sound, music and video in almost any format. pyglet can
  optionally use AVbin to play back audio formats

At the moment pyglet is included in the python-sympy package. As it can
be viewed as a pygame replacement sympy maintainers agree that it should
be packaged separately.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=459716

The final package will be maintained by the pkg-exppsy project on
alioth.

  Programming Lang: PHP
  Description : Squirrelmail plugin used by other plugins to work with
older SM versions

 This plugin allows any other plugin access to the functions and special
 variables needed to make it backward (and forward) compatible with most
 versions of SM in wide use. This eliminates the need for duplication of
 certain functions throughout many plugins. It also provides
 functionality that helps check that plugins have been installed and set
 up correctly.

* Package name: dkfilter
  Version : 0.11
  Upstream Author : Jason Long [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://jason.long.name/dkfilter/
* License : GPL v2
  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : implements domainKeys message signing and verification

dkfilter is an SMTP-proxy designed for Postfix. It implements DomainKeys
message signing and verification. It comprises two separate filters, an
outbound filter for signing outgoing email, and an inbound filter for
verifying signatures of incoming email. The filters can operate as either
Before-Queue or After-Queue Postfix content filters.

The following is not in the control file, just in this ITP:

As Yahoo! requests DomainKeys to be implemented for sending mail to them,
it's quite urgent that this package reaches SID asap to allow people to
be able to send email to Yahoo!

Note that this package is NOT to be confused with dk-filter (with a dash)
that is a package for Sendmail, and that has nothing to do with the perl
scripts for which I'm doing an ITP (even though both intend to implement
DomainKeys, one is for Sendmail, while this one is for Postfix).

  Description : optimized implementation of W3C's XQuery 1.0 with static
typing
   Galax is an open-source implementation of XQuery 1.0, the W3C XML
   Query Language. Galax closely tracks the definition of XQuery 1.0 as
   specified by the W3C and also implements XPath 2.0, which is a subset
   of XQuery 1.0.
   .
   Galax aims to be fully conformant to the XQuery test suite, but also
   to be an implementation which runs fast and is fun to use!
   .
   Galax's primary goal was to serve as a reference implementation for
   the XQuery 1.0 language, but now also supports advanced XQuery
   features (notably support for XML Schema validation), support for XML
   updates, applications of XQuery to Web services, and XQuery
   optimization.

Bug#426581: meshlab - anyone still working on this

 Teemu Ikonen writes (Re: Bug#426581: meshlab - anyone still working on

After I built it (on lenny), I ran meshlab from an xterm. It opened
an entirely blank override-redirect pale grey window covering the top
left area of my display, as well as the main window. What is that
blank window for ? Can it be got rid of ?
   I cannot repeat this.
  What is your window manager ? See my mail just sent for more
  information about this.

I run standard Gnome with Metacity. Looking at Paolos mail on this
subject, this may be a bug in QT, or in the window manager you are
using.

  However I have discovered one thing that we in Debian ought to
  consider release-critical: I have discovered that the program prompted
  me that a new version had been released. This is presumably achieved
  by contacting some upstream server to check.

  Paulo, is that correct ?

  I'm afraid that it is not acceptable for a program packaged for Debian
  to phone home like this and that feature must be disabled before we
  upload it even to unstable.

I don't like this either, but is this really against the letter of the
DFSG, policy or the social contract? On the other hand Paolo
(perhaps?) needs to collect statistics in order to secure funding for
his work. This is a common problem with software written by scientists
on grant money, and I'm afraid the usual solution is binary-only
releases and not allowing redistribution, which then supposedly makes
download statistics somewhat representative of actual usage.

At least when open source software phones home, one has the
possibility to check what information is being sent. Maybe the best
solution would be to have a pop-up dialog asking permission to phone
home, with an Always allow / deny from now on option. In Windows
this dialog comes with the firewall :)

If I run the program with --help or -h, it tries to open them as
files. It ought at least to bomb out with a message saying please
refer to the meshlab wiki (with a URL).
   Upstream.
  If I provide a patch will you incorporate it in your package ? I can
  do it as a bzr branch or an emailed diff, whichever you prefer.

Patches to the packaging are of course welcome. Unified diffs by mail
are probably the least inconvenient option.

Teemu

Bug#467209: RFP: python-buzhug -- pure-Python database engine, using a Pythonic, no-SQL syntax

2008-02-23 Thread Luciano Bello
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
X-Debbugs-CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: python-buzhug
  Version : 1.0
  Upstream Author : Pierre Quentel [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://buzhug.sourceforge.net/
* License : BSD License
  Description : pure-Python database engine, using a Pythonic, no-SQL
syntax

 buzhug is a fast, pure-Python database engine, using a syntax that Python
programmers should find very intuitive.
 The data is stored and accessed on disk (it is not an in-memory database);
the implementation has been designed to make all operations, and especially
selection, as fast as possible with an interpreted language

Bug#467206: ITP: libcoat-perl -- light and Moose-compatible meta-class for Perl5

2008-02-23 Thread Alexis Sukrieh
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Alexis Sukrieh [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: libcoat-perl
  Version : 0.1_0.6
  Upstream Author : Alexis Sukrieh [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/Coat/
* License : GPL, Artistic
  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : light and Moose-compatible meta-class for Perl5

This module was inspired by the excellent Moose meta class which provides
enhanced object creation for Perl5.

Moose is great, but has huge dependencies which makes it difficult to
use in restricted environments.

This module implements the basic goodness of Moose, namely accessors
automagic, hook modifiers and inheritance facilities.

It is not Moose but the small bunch of features provided are
Moose-compatible. That means you can start with Coat and, if later you
get to the point where you can or want to upgrade to Moose, your code won't
have to change : every features provided by Coat exist in the Moose's API (but
the opposite is not true, as you can imagine).

Bug#467211: ITP: libdbix-sequence-perl -- simple SQL92 ID generator

2008-02-23 Thread Alexis Sukrieh
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Alexis Sukrieh [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: libdbix-sequence-perl
  Version : 1.5
  Upstream Author : Benoit Beausejour [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/DBIx-Sequence/
* License : GPL, Artistic
  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : simple SQL92 ID generator

This module is intended to give easier portability to Perl database application
by providing a database independant unique ID generator. This way, an
application developer is not bound to use his database's SEQUENCE or
auto_increment thus making his application portable on multiple database
environnements.

This module implements a simple Spin Locker mechanism and is garanteed to
return a unique value every time it is called, even with concurrent processes.
It uses your database for its state storage with ANSI SQL92 compliant SQL. All
SQL queries inside DBIx::Sequence are pre cached and very efficient especially
under mod_perl.

  Version : 0.0._0.5

* URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/Coat-Persistent/

  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : Ruby's ActiveRecord::Base port for Perl (ORM)

Coat::Persistent is an object - relational-databases mapper, it allows
you to build instances of objects and save them into a database
transparently.

You basically define a mapping rule, either global or per-class and
play with your objects without bothering with SQL for simple cases
(selecting, inserting, updating).

Coat::Peristent lets you use SQL if you want to, considering SQL
is the best language when dealing with compelx queries.

Coat is inspired from the API of the Rails' ORM: ActiveRecord::Base.

  Description : pure-Python library built as a PDF toolkit

A Pure-Python library built as a PDF toolkit. It is capable of:

* extracting document information (title, author, ...),
* splitting documents page by page,
* merging documents page by page,
* cropping pages,
* merging multiple pages into a single page,
* encrypting and decrypting PDF files.

By being Pure-Python, it should run on any Python platform without any
dependencies on external libraries. It can also work entirely on StringIO
objects rather than file streams, allowing for PDF manipulation in memory. It
is therefore a useful tool for websites that manage or manipulate PDFs.

Bug#465961: Please consider migrating to libxml++2.6

2008-02-23 Thread Deng Xiyue
As libxml++ 1.0 has finally been orphaned, whose upstream support
stops since 2005, I'd suggest its rdepends, libofx and passepartout,
consider to migrate to libxml++2.6, which I am maintaining, hence
CCing their maintainers. Though I haven't got a migration guide yet,
I guess the main difference is that libxml++2.6 is depending on
glibmm2.4 for utf8 string handling, and the interfaces are not changed
much. Please try building against libxml++2.6, and let's find a way
for their smooth migration.

Bug#244582: ufoai packages

 libcurl3-dev to libcurl4-dev. As mentioned in the previous messages to
 this bug, HawkNL is not needed.

Cool - I must say I have not done much on this package lately. Is
this an updated version from the packaging I have done in SVN ?

 As for getting this game into Debian main, there seems to be still
 some issues with the licensing of some of the game content, mostly the
 textures it seems. There's also a question about the DFSG-freeness of
 the CC licenses used for the content, mentioned at
 http://ufoai.ninex.info/wiki/index.php/License_Issues
 Most content seems to be CC-SA 3.0 though, which is DFSG compatible.

I'd be happy to see an official statement saying that CC-anything is
DFSG-compliant, but last I check (2 weeks ago), I could only find that
the consensus was that no CC license is.

 If there is a place outside of Debian which could host the packages
 and the revision control data for the debian dir,

The Debian dir is already in UFO:AI SVN. The debs can probably be
handled by sourceforge - that was the idea when the former deb
repository was closed.

Hi,

For anyone who wants to help Ron et al., or just follow along at home, here are
some links of interest:

Devel is apparently focused at Debian's Git server, and it's alive.
Look for freewx projects at http://git.debian.org/

Also there is a project page on Alioth, but AFAICT it's inactive.
  http://alioth.debian.org/projects/freewx/

  Freewx-maint mailing list (no posts)
http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/freewx-maint

It was a bit of trouble to find as git's search is non-existant AFAICT and
Alioth's search needs a min of 3 chars, and wx is two. The vital clue
was that freewx was the needed search term and that they did exist.

And now for 2.8 there is

Why not just using the pkg-games svn to store the debian/ directory?

On 23/02/2008, Yann Dirson wrote:

FWIW, I'd assume it's OK to upload that into main, and that ftpmasters
would take appropriate actions in case something's (very) wrong with
that license. IANADD, IANAL, etc.

  Why not just using the pkg-games svn to store the debian/
  directory?

 It's just that there is a debian/ tree in upstream SVN, because I
 happen to have done this and other things in that project. And I
 don't know what's the policy is about this for packages for which
 the legal status for each part has not been settled - it's not just
 about CC, it's mostly about those textures that original devs copied
 from who-knows-where presuming it was OK to do so...

I see. Common situation actually. You're welcome to host the debian/
directory in pkg-games's svn anyway, which is far better than an
upstream debian/ directory (see Joey Hess's blog for such reasons).
Even if it's not uploaded yet, one can keep track of it there.
Usually, either one should ask upstream to track down where the files
were copied from, or to replace them with files licensed under
suitable terms. Depending on the type of the files, you might just
strip them for the tarballs for some versions (e.g. music/sound files
might not be essential, and just deleted from the tarball), until some
free content is added back, or until original copyright holders
(re)license them under appropriate terms.

I hope it clarifies. Let me know if you have more questions.

Cheers,

mailscanner has a high release cycle (once a month). I don't have the
time to build a new package this often and honestly I'm not even shure
if such a volatile software should be part of debian.

Over the last half year I also tried to find a sponsor in mdo without
success. I created 3-4 packages and none made it into the offical
debian repo.

So I orphan this package and suggest to remove it from debian.

 Is it ok for do you want me to develop this more ?

 Description: ASter Command FIle Editor

 The long description looks fine now, but I'd write the following short
 description instead:

 Description: graphical editor for Code Aster command files

Well, ASter Command FIle Editor written backwards yields EFICAS, so I
guess there is a reason why Sylvestre wrote the short description the
way it is ;-)

Hello, I was trying to adopt this package. There was a package at

I think it is a good thing to contact the owner of the ITA bug before
uploading a new version.

Sorry about that César. I should have read your RFS posted to the
list.

Bug#465821: RFP: x2go -- x2go serverbased computing environment

2008-02-23 Thread Alexander Schmehl
Hi!

* Heinz-M. Graesing [EMAIL PROTECTED] [080215 08:06]:

 * Package name: x2go
   Version :
   Upstream Author : Name [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 * URL : http://x2go.berlios.de
 * License : (GPL)
   Programming Lang: (C, C++, Perl)
   Description : x2go serverbased computing
[..]
 You may find prebuild debian packages on our site (x2go.berlios.de) and
 in our repository for amd64, i386 and ppc.

Since you allready have packages ready, why not maintain them yourself
via a sponsor, who uploads the package for you? Would make IMHO sense
in your case.

Yours sincerely,
  Alexander

2008-02-23 Thread Juan Angulo Moreno

Hi,

Cesar sent to the Debian Mentors maillist the RFS today:

http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg53855.html

The change of ownership was made yesterday for Debian QA Group, as this
was Orphan and had a bug RC (which was closed a couple of days ago).

Bug#467038: RFP: pytrainer -- Free Sport Training Center

2008-02-23 Thread Bernd Zeimetz

 Unfortunately, I'm dumb when it comes at Python stuff, so, while I'd
 happily give some help, imagining to package this myself would be too
 ambitious...

I'll help out if there're Python problems.

Cheers,

Bernd

Bug#467085: ITP: ASTK -- Code_Aster build/control system and front-end

   It is unclear to me what this software can do. Can I generate finite

   backend also packaged for Debian?

  It's the build system and graphical interface for the aster binary(ies)
  built in the aster package.

 Ah, so there will be other packages that will Build-Depend on astk?

Not that I know of (possibly homard), but it's possible. It doesn't
look straightforward to disentangle the build system from the server
component that runs the aster FEA binary.

Apologies again for the sloppy ITP bug.

Anyway, it is good to have the bugs fixed. Do you want to adopt it?
