Bug#474602: ITP: nikto -- web server security scanner

 * Package name: nikto

Nikto was already packaged for Debian (etch provided version 1.35). It was
 removed from Debian (see
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=434392).

Please, include the debian information (including changelog history) from
the old Debian packages and use that as a starting point. I'm not sure how
many of the patches introduced in the Debian package are current, but it
would be best if you evolved from that instead of making new packages from
 scratch.

I first packaged nikto as an ITA but since packages.qa.debian.org seemed
to think that having an ITA for a removed package was an error and since
my ITA was turned back into a removal request, I have opened an ITP
instead.

The package is ready and is an update of 1.35-2 which was in unstable
before removal. It is available on mentors.debian.net if you want to
look at it:
 http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/non-free/n/nikto/nikto_2.02-1.dsc

Thanks for your feedback.

Bug#439993: ITP: libapache2-mod-pubcookie -- apache2 module supporting Pubcookie

2008-04-07 Thread Faidon Liambotis

Hi,
What are you plans about this ITP? It's been open for some time now.

I've done some preliminary work on packaging upstream and will probably
finish it really soon, since I need to deploy it for a work-related project.

If you have prepared something, contact me to arrange comaintainance
and/or sponsorship.

If you haven't, I'll handle the whole thing, if you agree.

Thanks,
Faidon

Bug#460591: Falcon P.L. license (ITP:Bug#460591)

2008-04-07 Thread MJ Ray
Giancarlo Niccolai [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 MJ Ray wrote:
Anyway, this is the show-stopper. Contaminates other software. DFSG 9.
It's the parts of FPL sections 1, 2 and 5 about Scripts. Clear enough?

Yes, your position is now clear, thanks.

Yet, I can't see why you say it contaminates more software. The license
just applies to software that uses Falcon; scripts (falcon scripts) do
it and embedding applications do it; of course, also derivative work do
it. I can't see why requiring for them to be closed source and putting a
notice or open source with FPLL or with another compatible open source
license (as GPL or LGPL) would be more infringing than i.e. GPL itself.

The licence for Falcon (this software) is effectively asserting that it
can restrict the scripts (which is some other software). I can't see
why you think that doesn't contaminate other software, the scripts.

To be free software, the licence for Falcon must not apply to software
that uses Falcon *except* when it is embedded into or extending Falcon
in certain ways. I'm not even sure that Falcon's licence *can* restrict
the scripts it loads, because:-

The interpreted program, to the interpreter, is just data; a free
software license like the GPL, based on copyright law, cannot limit
what data you use the interpreter on. You can run it on any data
(interpreted program), any way you like, and there are no requirements
about licensing that data to anyone.

Source: http://www.fsf.org/licensing/licenses/gpl-faq.html#IfInterpreterIsGPL

So, the GPL doesn't apply to scripts of a GPL'd interpreter, so FPLL is
different in this way.

  [...4d...]
A new obnoxious advertising clause. Probably won't break DFSG, but
I don't like it for practical reasons.

[...]
Also, the advertisement is part of well known and accepted licenses,
[...]

Sure. As I wrote: it probably won't break DFSG but is obnoxious to many.

Finally, if your thing is open source you don't need to put any notice
 anywhere [...]

Well, that's better than many. Thanks!

  [...]
I didn't see it in the web page http://www.falconpl.org/?page_id=license
but that site has poor accessibility anyway. http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG1

That's because I gave you the direct link to the raw text of the
license. They are always stuck together in distro files and on the pages
from which the license is accessible. Also, I posted the link to the
 commentary here.

I suggest linking the FAQ from the Licence and the reverse.

[...]
Thanks for the comments on the site; pitifully, we are short on hands,
and what we have now is all that we can afford in term of effort. A
person with your expertise would surely help.

Sorry. Most of my cooperatives are also short on hands and this has a
pretty tenuous link to my work (I use debian for work and strongly support
free software, so encouraging 100% free software for debian has eventual
benefits) so I can't really spend more time, unless the link becomes more
direct, like one of my cooperatives is commissioned to write a study or
bugfix a website or something.

PerlySense is a Perl IDE backend that integrates with editor
frontends, currently Emacs. Conveniently navigate and browse the code

and scripts and syntax check source with easy navigation to
errors/warnings/failing tests.Automate common editing tasks.

Highlight syntax errors, warnings and Perl::Critic complaints in the

PerlySense works great also when developing Perl module.

Note: Vim is probably partially supported, though I did not try it.

Bug#377948: Oh dear

2008-04-07 Thread Carr, Chris
It looks as if Jamie has given up trying to get webmin accepted into Debian.
Perhaps he was repelled by the tone of Peter's message:

in short it seems you have hacked up a way to build a deb without reading the
new maintainers guide at all.

Jamie had clearly read the guide, and found that it did not enable him to
create a perfect Debian package on his first (or third) try. (I can understand
his position: I too am trying to build my first Debian package, and I'm finding
the documentation insufficiently helpful.) This kind of treatment of a
prospective maintainer (especially one who is the upstream author of a popular
and widely-used application) is disappointing.

I also agree with Stéphane - it would be helpful if this bug appeared more
quickly when searching for webmin in Debian - e.g. on
http://packages.debian.org/webmin

Perhaps a friendly DD out there could have another try at helping Jamie get
webmin back into Debian? I'm sure a lot of Debian users would appreciate it.

Maybe not for Lenny but for Lenny+1. It's unmaintained and superseded by

Bug#377948: Oh dear

2008-04-07 Thread Jamie Cameron
On 07/Apr/2008 04:40 Carr, Chris wrote ..
It looks as if Jamie has given up trying to get webmin accepted into Debian.
 Perhaps
he was repelled by the tone of Peter's message:

in short it seems you have hacked up a way to build a deb without reading the
 new maintainers guide at all.

Jamie had clearly read the guide, and found that it did not enable him to
 create
a perfect Debian package on his first (or third) try. (I can understand his
 position:
I too am trying to build my first Debian package, and I'm finding the
 documentation
insufficiently helpful.) This kind of treatment of a prospective maintainer
 (especially
one who is the upstream author of a popular and widely-used application) is
 disappointing.

I also agree with Stéphane - it would be helpful if this bug appeared more
 quickly
when searching for webmin in Debian - e.g. on
 http://packages.debian.org/webmin

Perhaps a friendly DD out there could have another try at helping Jamie get
 webmin
back into Debian? I'm sure a lot of Debian users would appreciate it.

Thanks!

I would be glad to accept any patches to the packages I've created that make
them
acceptable for Debian, as long as the current basic installation method is
preserved.

What I think has caused some problems in the past is the way the /etc/webmin
directory
is created at install time, rather than being part of the package.
Unfortunately, this
is necessary as it's initial contents can differ based on the Debian version
being
installed into ..

2008-04-07 Thread Peter Woodman
Hi-
Yeah, I submitted that quite some time ago and then the idea got
buried. I've just recently completed repackaging of this and just
deployed it to some machines last friday.. I've switched to using
git-buildpackage, and can stick it online by day's end, but seeing
that you're a debian developer, you'll probably have a much easier
time getting it included..

I'd be willing to comaintain if that'd be helpful, but if not, feel
free to do as you like :)

 Hi,
What are you plans about this ITP? It's been open for some time now.

I've done some preliminary work on packaging upstream and will probably

If you have prepared something, contact me to arrange comaintainance and/or

If you haven't, I'll handle the whole thing, if you agree.

Bug#474699: ITP: python-mpd -- Python MPD client library

2008-04-07 Thread J. Alexander Treuman
On Mon, Apr 07, 2008 at 11:32:14AM +0200, Cyril Brulebois wrote:
how does it compare to python-mpdclient?

python-mpdclient (better known outside Debian as py-libmpdclient2, or
just mpdclient2) is old, unmaintained, relatively slow, a bit ugly,
contains known bugs, and lacks support for some major features of the
MPD protocol.

I wrote python-mpd with the intention of maintaining it as a replacement
which fixes many of these issues. It's faster (by as much as 2x in some
benchmarks), cleaner, more strict (and thus less prone to strange bugs),
and implements every command supported by the latest MPD protocol.

Although it's not 100% API compatible, porting existing clients should
be relatively easy. In fact, Sonata was successfully ported the very
same day I publicly released python-mpd. And as noted, Sonata 1.5 now
depends on it instead of bundling it's own hacked version of mpdclient2.

However, it's still not a drop in replacement. mpdclient2 will need to
stick around for old clients. But I intend to update the MPD website
and wiki to recommend python-mpd over mpdclient2 for new clients. And
with mpdclient2 quickly becoming deprecated, python-mpd is likely to see
much more use in the future.

Description: active/passive address scanner using arp requests
The netdiscover tool is an active/passive address reconnaissance
program, mainly developed to gain informations about wireless
networks without dhcp servers in wardriving scenarios. It can
also be used on switched networks. Built on top of libnet and
libpcap, it can passively detect online hosts or search for
them by sending arp requests. Furthermore, it can be used to
inspect your network's arp traffic and find network addresses
using auto scan mode which will scan for common local networks.

Bug#474748: ITP: ruby-pg -- PostgreSQL interface for Ruby

2008-04-07 Thread Aurélien GÉRÔME
Hi,

On Mon, Apr 07, 2008 at 11:58:12PM +0300, Dmitry Borodaenko wrote:
Aurélien, what is your impression ruby-postgres upstream? According to
RubyForge, it appears to be dead since about 2 years ago... If it
truly is so, probably we should change description of libpgsql-ruby to
 recommend ruby-pg?

It is indeed dead upstream. I even refrained to upload the
latest snapshot (with notices support), because it appeared as a
reverse-dependency of rails, and I never had a use case for it with
rails. I used libdbi-ruby1.8 with rails.

I adopted it back then, because I used it for personal admin
scripts. There is also libdbd-pg-ruby1.8 as reverse-dependency.

I would go for a total replacement, as this fork is what seems to
be used nowadays. Since I do not have the time to investigate, this
is why I said that you can do whatever it takes to move on, so feel
free to add you as co-maintainer.

Cheers,

Thanks.

Hello.

I would like to adopt this package to get it back on track with debian
releases, as upstream is actively working on it and has several patches
that increase funcionality. Not to mention that's highly useful.

Have a good day.

I'm currently using GStreamer and probably will for a while since it's
being used by an application currently in production. I could help out
and take over maintenance, as long as it becomes part of Debian Perl
 Packaging Project [1].

Go for it. I'm not in a great position to take it at the moment, it
really needs a perl expert.
