Bug#494849: Status of Debian packaging for libauthcas-perl ?

2008-08-13 Thread Olivier Salaün

Hi Olivier,

How are you?

That's a great idea.
The AuthCAS perl module was initialy written for the Sympa software but
I maintained them separately. I wish to change this and make Sympa use
the AuthCAS CPAN module. Therefore it is important to have it available
as a Debian package.

Just let me know if something needs to be changed in the code.
However I don't have a Debian server to build the package ; how can we
manage then?

Olivier Berger a écrit :

As you can see in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=494849 , I just issued
a Request For Packaging (RFP) in Debian, for the AuthCAS perl module
that you wrote.

Appart from the debian package's changelog there seems to be enough
already in your SVN to build a Debian package (seems it was a
contribution by Lionel Porcheron).

Do you know if anyone is already working on pushing an official package
for it in Debian ? I couldn't see anything in Debian's trackers, but I
may have missed it.

I guess it could be interesting to have such a package in the official
distribution. Still there would be to find a volunteer maintainer ;-)

Bug#494849: Status of Debian packaging for libauthcas-perl ?

2008-08-13 Thread Olivier Berger
Hi.

Great : upstream very responsive and supporting ;)

OK.

> Therefore it is important to have it available
> as a Debian package.

And also for instance to CAS-ify perl apps (I'm interested in trying for
TWiki, for which someone wrote a CAS LoginManager, which uses AuthCAS).

So definitely something we need. Btw, we are setting-up some
collaborative effort in order to try and coordinate on packaging some
CAS-related packages for Debian. Just tell me (no need to keep this
bug-report in CC: though) if you need more details.
Also, btw, Sympa package in Debian seems to work with CAS (just did very
basic tests only), which is cool, although with the "old" internal CAS
client.

> Just let me know if something needs to be changed in the code.

Will certainly do that.

> However I don't have a Debian server to build the package ; how can we
> manage then?

It may not be necessary, if someone volunteers for managing the Debian
packaging part.

I think that Debian's policy (or best practices) more or less recommends
to keep the official Debian packaging parts (scripts and config files)
in a separate way thant the rest of the (upstream) sources or the
packages. So there may be no need to keep the "debian/" subdir in your
sources, but instead to keep it somewhere else (probably on a project
hosted on alioth.debian.org, Debian's forge).

Still, there needs to be some formal candidate for maintainance of such
a Debian package (as this #494849 ticket only relates to the need for a
package from a user's perspective).

Of course I may volunteer for such Debian maintainer role, but maybe
Lionel Porcheron would also ? ... Or we would have some other setup
(through the CAS packages related project on alioth).

We'll surely let you know in any case. Stay tuned ;)

Best regards,

This was fixed in Gajim's repository (from where the file is borrowed)
so you may just ask your upstream to sync it from there.

I guess you know very well, but for others watching this bug or reading
debian.devel.wnpp -- hamster-applet has been accepted as official module
in GNOME and will be part of 2.24.

he already has a package for ubuntu and I already reviewed it, so it shall

he can remove it from ubuntu and just let it be copied from Debian.

Bug#451713: O: galrey -- Command line image gallery generator. It also makes thumbnails

2008-08-13 Thread Arthur de Jong

I think it may be better to remove this package alltogether. There are
numerous similar programs, there has been no real activity since 2006
and has (a few) open bugs that do not seem te be cared for.

I also can't seem to find an upstream for this (the domain name
mentioned in the copyright file is no longer registered at this time).
Seems like this software is only to be found in Debian (and Ubuntu).

I will ask for removal of this package unless I hear any objections (or
unless I forget) some time in the future.

The gajim ticket is at: http://trac.gajim.org/ticket/4187
Gajim changed the file to GPLv3 *only*, so hamster-applet upstream has
moved to use the g-p-m (or gnome-screensaver?) dbus api.

The hamster-applet 2.23.90 tarball is due on August 18th, but I'll
probably package an SVN snapshot before then.

Well, this is apparently another mistake, I'll notify them about it. I
tend to read diffs quickly (just because there are megabytes of them!)
so I really missed this important distinction.

Nevertheless, it is not a stopper for this ITP (assuming upstream
includes idle.c at the end); it will be a potential problem when the
current GNU licenses will be upgraded.

> so hamster-applet upstream has moved to use the g-p-m (or
> gnome-screensaver?) dbus api.

Because of this (almost obvious and easily fixable error)? By reading
the GNOME Bugzilla bug my impression is that your (hamster) upstream
just chose a more suitable API -- being a GNOME applet, portability
within environments doesn't matter much.

There seems to be another bug to make hamster-applet Python-only (I just
saw the title; don't know details/rationale), so upstream's decision
might be based on the overall evaluation of the reported bugs and/or
some unwritten (or "unspoken", as they say) design goals. Anyway, I'm
just speculating.

I'll pester the Gajim folks anyway.

I read all Gajim tickets in real time, because I'm subscribed to the
appropriate list. I'm aware of this issue very well, including the
developer in question. The problem is that they can't release 0.12 as
"GPLv3 or later" while having this developer disagree with the
relicensing, and having idle.c under GPLv3 only.

Anyway, perhaps your hamster guys did the right thing; and just to clear
any eventual cloud gathering -- I was merely clarifying as someone who
follows the Gajim project since the early days. It is entirely up to
you to decide what to do with hamster-applet, and I don't want to
interfere at all.

Good luck, and especially in maintaining GNU enscript :-}

  Programming Lang: Python
Description : a simple chess clock to help track time in real life games

This is a fairly simple application designed to track the time spent thinking
by the players during a chess game. Various ways of tracking time are
supported, with only "countdown" (aka "blitz") and "fisher" for now. The
graphical interface is keyboard driven and is intended to be minimal and
simple. The code is made to be extensible to other game types.
