Bug#514690: Regarding RFS: Artha

2009-02-20 Thread Sundaram
I would not recommend to try this to others. ;-)
Point taken. Gee! That (checking in) was fast for a single dosage of pestering
;)

Thanks for checking in the control files. I have received a mail telling that
the ITP bug is now tagged 'pending'. Also a mail on artha_0.8.0-1_i386 which
says

(new) artha_0.8.0-1.diff.gz optional utils
(new) artha_0.8.0-1.dsc optional utils
(new) artha_0.8.0-1_i386.deb optional utils

and in the end Your package contains new components which requires manual
editing of the override file. It is ok otherwise, so please be patient. New
packages are usually added to the override file about once a week. You may have
gotten the distribution wrong. You'll get warnings above if files already
exist in other distributions.

So what does these mean? What file is it talking about? Also, if I had received
one for i386, why didn't I receive one for amd64? I am confused :-|

I wanted to understand the underlying process.

Thanks

That's why I recommended pestering - because it is normally helpful
(in my case). ;-)

This means I did not only commited to SVN but also uploaded
the package:

   http://ftp-master.debian.org/new/artha_0.8.0-1.html

It's just waiting for ftpmaster aproval (as several other packages
which enter the Debian pool the first time).

didn't I receive one for amd64?

The other architectures will be autobuilded later once the package
is accepted by ftpmaster. That's perfectly normal. You get the mail
only once for the architecture the package was builded. If I would
have done it on mips or powerpc or whatever you whould have got this

There is no need to be confused. Everything is perfectly normal (as
far as I can tell).

According to this post (I haven't checked myself), this is the same

 kernel versions).

The 2.6.28 was uploaded yesterday to Debian, we will all benefit from
 this soon ;-)

BTW, I have tested the 1.9 module with success, but I hadn't noticed
major problems with the previous releases.

Now, the other utilities should be packaged for Debian to make life
 easier.

FYI I have opened an ITP for ozerocdoff [0]

I have already made some preliminary work in my SVN (see ITP for
details).

I will also work on hsoconnect and hsolink packages.

I would be please to get some help for these packages ;)

After thinking in it, and read some comments of upstream maintainers, I think
that kmess 1.5 (KDE3) should be replaced by kmess 2.0~svn (KDE4), because
it is expected that KDE3 to be replaced by KDE4 in Unstable and Testing in a
short space of time, and users will want to use KDE4 version. In addiction
some KDE3 dependencies, may dissapear from the archive.
So I am trying to make a Debian package from a recent functional svn snapshot,
i am having some problems so I am just starting in Debian packaging, I am
following the Debian New Maintainers' Guide so I hope for having the package
soon.
I will be some days with Internet access very limited so i may repply here
lately.

usb-modeswitch seems to have inspired Option when developping ozerocdoff
(actually, some parts of use-modeswitch were even added to ozerocdoff).

ozerocdoff is stated as replacing rezero and usb_modeswitch on
pharscape.org, but usb-modeswitch might also do the job.

I have never tried usb-modeswitch as ozerocdoff is recommended by Option
and works perfectly.

I see that usb-modeswitch is packaged without udev rules, which
ozerocdoff ships upstream.

I have checked in the mean time and noticed there are some udev rules as
well on the usb-modeswitch homepage.

One drawback of ozerocdoff is that it might only be used with Option
devices (this is a guess only as developed by Option) whereas
usb-modeswitch has a more general approach which seems better)

Bug#516096: ITP: libibumad -- OpenFabrics Alliance InfiniBand umad (user MAD) library

2009-02-20 Thread Bernd Schubert
Guus Sliepen wrote:

On Thu, Feb 19, 2009 at 10:31:43AM +, Guy Coates wrote:

 * Package name: libibumad
   Version : 1.2.3
   Upstream Author : Voltaire, Inc.
 * URL : http://www.openfabrics.org

I do not see a libibumad tarball there, I did find OFED-1.4.tgz which
contained a SRPM for it... if this is the only way upstream distributes
these libraries, please suggest to them that it is better if they publish
 normal tarballs.

Hmm, that is the difficult part. There are individual packages and there is
OFED. OFED is a collection of many packages, mostly not the recent version,
but a more tested stable version. E.g. IB management packages can be found
here: http://www.openfabrics.org/downloads/management/

I already wondered all the time, which would be better for Debian, the
packages from OFED or the individual packages. IHMO, extracting all the
srpms is a pain...

Description : OpenFabrics Alliance InfiniBand umad (user MAD)
   library

libibumad provides the user MAD library functions which sit on top of
the user MAD modules in the kernel. These are used by the IB diagnostic
 and management tools, including OpenSM.

I have absolutely no clue what this does, except that it has something to
 do
with InfiniBand. What is MAD? What is OpenSM? What functionality does
this library provide? Also drop OpenFabrics Alliance from the short
description. If you want to mention it, do it in the long description.

The problem is, there is nowhere a real description of what all these IB
libraries are actually doing. MAD = management datagram. As far as I
understand it, you need this library to send IB management packages from
user space.
OpenSM = open subnet manager. Each IB network needs at least one running
subnet manager, which controls the routing between ports. From the man page
of opensm:

opensm provides an implementation of an InfiniBand Subnet Manager and
Administration. Such a software entity is required to run for
in order to initialize the InfiniBand hardware (at least one per each
InfiniBand subnet).

Guy, it is a bit a pity, since you did all the work again, we already had
done at q-leap :( IMHO all these IB packages are too many for one
maintainer, what do you think to make an alioth for these?

Cheers,
Bernd

Bug#516096: ITP: libibumad -- OpenFabrics Alliance InfiniBand umad (user MAD) library

2009-02-20 Thread Guy Coates

The problem is, there is nowhere a real description of what all these IB
libraries are actually doing. MAD = management datagram. As far as I
understand it, you need this library to send IB management packages from
 user space.

I've dug around the openfabrics website, and have unearthed better descriptions
for the libraries.

I already wondered all the time, which would be better for Debian, the
packages from OFED or the individual packages. IHMO, extracting all the
 srpms is a pain...

I suspect the answer will be it depends; some people will want the latest
available versions, and some will want the stable version to build 3rd party
apps against.

Guy, it is a bit a pity, since you did all the work again, we already had
done at q-leap :( IMHO all these IB packages are too many for one
maintainer, what do you think to make an alioth for these?

That would be a good start; it will at least stop anyone else from attempting a
3rd packaging attempt! FYI, I have (mostly lintian clean) packages for the rest
of OFED 1.4 , I just haven't ITPd them.

Cheers,

Guy

Bug#511899: ITP: coinor-csdp -- A software package for semidefinite programming

2009-02-20 Thread whoami314

Hi

This ITP is a nice idea. In my research group, we're now using csdp
as an external oracle when solving inequalities in the Coq proof assistant
(see [1], or more specifically [2] for the use of csdp in Coq). This
coinor-cdsp package could simplify things quite a bit for us, by becoming
a recommends or suggests or whatever for package coq. Anyway, if you need
early testers, or even help during the creation of this package, let me know...

Sure, but you should carefully check whether licenses (coinor uses CLP)
are compatible and maybe askt on the coinor mailinglist if they can give
an exception in case there is a problem...

Bug#501760: New upstream release 1.9 is out

2009-02-20 Thread Didier Raboud
Le vendredi 20 février 2009 13:27:37 Julien Valroff, vous avez écrit :

This is nice. I put Didier in Cc, as he can perhaps make use of them
for usb-modeswitch. Feel free to ask me if you need sponsoring for
  ozerocdoff.

 Cheers,
 Julien

Hi all,

about usb-modeswitch:
* The -1 version actually in NEW does effectively not contain any udev
rules.
* I prepared a -2 version [0] which builds a udev rules file from the
  configuration file at build time.
* This .rules files is really a simple linear file, which lists all the
  possibilities.
* From what I have tested with my device, it works. :)

about ozerocdoff:
* From what I have seen, it is particular to the Option devices, where
usb_modeswitch is more generic (this is not a comment on the
intrinsinc
  quality).
* The provided .rules is much smarter.

I think that both projects should coexist if they have non-overlapping uses.

Best regards,

OdyX

See is a lightweight Linux text file and man page viewer. It maintains
document meta-data for each user, allowing them to automatically keep
bookmarks and highlights for read-only system files. It also has a
server mode so that command line requests can be sent to a single
running server rather than starting multiple instances. Other features
include hypertext-style apropos (man page) searches, file monitoring,
regular expressions, command history, and nice little
toggle lights on the interface for the server and file monitor.

Description : N at a time iteration API

Data::Stream::Bulk tries to find middle ground between one at a time and all
at once processing of data sets.
 .
The purpose of this module is to avoid the overhead of implementing an
iterative API when this isn't necessary, without breaking forward
compatibility in case that becomes necessary later on.
 .
The API optimizes for when a data set typically fits in memory and is
returned as an array, but the consumer cannot assume that the data set is
 bounded.
 .
The API is destructive in order to minimize the chance that resultsets are
 leaked due to improper usage.

I attach the original README file shipped with ozerocdoff, which
explains much better than I could.

I have also been discussing with Aurélien GÉRÔME who has recently
sponsored usb-modeswitch, which is now in NEW -
http://ftp-master.debian.org/new/usb-modeswitch_0.9.6-1.html

It has the same role but for more devices than ozerocdoff - we have
however concluded that it could be great to have both of them in Debian.

As regarding fixing the kernel, I fear I do not have the skills to judge
whether this would be appropriate (or possible) or not. I would be glad
to get some help on this.

Cheers,

Switch off ZERO-CD:

The new USB Option WWAN modem device support a CDROM device, which holds the needed Windows driver to use the WWAN modem.
Therefore the firmware of the WWAN modem announce during the USB enumeration process to work as a virtual CDROM device with
its vendor name ZOPTION. This device is now called ZERO-CD.

The Linux OS does currently not use this ZERO-CD, because the image can not hold all the needed binary kernel drivers, which
may exists in the world. Also it is often strange to identify the exact matching drivers to your system, because the 2.6.xx
kernel has today a lot of Distro specific patches. So we will currently not use this ZERO-CD device for Linux and have to switch
it off. Once you send this switch off command to the WWAN modem, another new USB enumeration will be requested by the WWAN modem
firmware. Afterwards the real WWAN modem interface is available on the USB bus.

Looking on the Linux USB core system, it has another restriction. If there are more than one possible drivers, which can work
successfully with that USB WWAN modem, the USB core system will allow probing the WWAN modem by these drivers in a special order.
First the already loaded driver will be allowed to do the probe. If then this driver do a successful probe, another potential
driver will never become a chance to do also a probing with that hardware. Therefore it is (currently) impossible to use the final
WWAN modem driver to send the ZERO-CD switch off command, because often the USB mass storge driver will be already loaded and
is working in your Linux system.
If the probing of an already loaded module is not successful or no module is loaded, the udev system will trigger a modeprobe
to load the needed driver(s). But the loading order of the drivers is not clear specified, although is may depends on the order
of the appearance in the modules dependency files created by depmod.

But this probe order is also important to know for some old Option WWAN modems, which could be handled by the mainstream 'option'
kernel driver. Unfortunately this is a bug, because the mainstream 'option' driver looks on the wrong USB device ID.

Solution switch off the ZERO-CD:

The ZERO-CD switch off command is simple a SCSI 'rezero' command. The easiest way to send this command to the WWAN modem is by
using the standard Linux USB mass storage driver. Because the WWAN modem will initiate a hard disconnect from the SCSI bus
connection after receiving that rezero command and the USB mass storage driver is not prepared for such a situation, we risk
a possible system freeze.
Therefore we use a short C-program 'ozerocdoff', based on the Linux USB lib together with some special udev rules. These rules
ensure a USB mass storage disconnection in the very early communication state, often in the time frame, when this driver waits
for a bus stabilization. Naturally we test,
- if only a known USB device ID is used, which ensures the
