Bug#522017: ITP: jblas -- jblas is a fast linear algebra library for Java

2009-03-31 Thread Soeren Sonnenburg
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Soeren Sonnenburg so...@debian.org

  Version : 0.1
Upstream Author : Mikio Braun mikioATcs.tu-berlin.de
* URL : https://ml01.zrz.tu-berlin.de/trac/jblas/
* License : BSD
  Programming Lang: Java
Description : jblas is a fast linear algebra library for Java

jblas is a fast linear algebra library for Java. jblas is based on
BLAS and LAPACK, the de-facto industry standard for matrix
computations, and uses state-of-the-art implementations like ATLAS for
all its computational routines, making jBLAS very fast.

jblas can is essentially a light-wight wrapper around the BLAS and
LAPACK routines. These packages have originated in the Fortran
community which explains their archaic API. On the other hand modern
implementations are hard to beat performance wise. jblas aims to make
this functionality available to Java programmers such that they do not
have to worry about writing JNI interfaces and calling conventions of
  Fortran code.

Well, I have already worked on these packages, but despite several email to
upstream requesting some changes, I still haven't received any answer. ATM
hsolink needs to be setuid root, which is imho not needed. As I have
already had to change a lot of things, I do not want to change all the
sources and would prefer working with upstream author for this.

Until I receive an answer, I won't request for these packages to be
uploaded.

In the meantime, NetworkManager 0.7 was uploaded and is working with such
Option 3G modems. Now that kernel 2.6.29 is also in Debian (which includes
the hso module), I think the priority is to upload the zerocdoff package
(which is almost ready, just need to review it, I own an ITP for this which
suggests the kernel should be fixed) - you can also test usb_modeswitch
which was already uploaded.

Cheers,
Julien

Description : Several functions that trace memory leaks

Test::LeakTrace provides several functions that trace memory leaks.
 .
This module scans arenas, the memory allocation system, so it can detect any
 leaked SVs in given blocks
 .
Leaked SVs are SVs which are not released after the end of the scope they have
been created. These SVs include global variables and internal caches. For
example, if you call a method in a tracing block, perl might prepare a cache
for the method. Thus, to trace true leaks, no_leaks_ok() and leaks_cmp_ok()
executes a block more than once.

What's the status of this ITP for wga-assembler?

Hi Don,

I am currently going through the update backlog that accumulated during the
freeze, but I would be happy to put the packaging of wga-assembler on top of my
Debian Med TODO list if there is a user request. I just downloaded the sources,
and checked that they compile fine, so I think that a package could be uploaded
to unstable or experimental soon if there is interest (otherwise, I will first
finish to upldate EMBOSS and BioPerl-related packages).

On the other hand, if you want to package it by yourself, do not hesitate to go
ahead. The Debian Med subversion repository is world-writable for DDs and you
are most welcome to use it and put our packging list as maintainer or uploader.

Lastly, there are currently ssake, maq and velvet in Debian. I do not know if
they can replace the Celera Assembler, but you can give them a look.

Have a nice day

Description : Gears (formally Google Gears)

Gears!

Gears is a wonderful piece of software that dramatically increases the
functionality of websites.

It is free and open source and is a
technology that ships integrated in the browser Google chrome.

I have been successfully using this technology in Iceweasel and it is fantastic
in assisting end-users like me of sites like Gmail and Google Reader in
enabling offline access. There are many different applications for this
technology and one hopes this will grow in the future. Sites currently
augmenting their user experience with Gears include Myspace, Gmail,
Google Reader, Google Code, and YouTube.

If this were included in Debian, our users would be able to remain on
the cutting edge of internet technology and would enjoy a trivial
installation procedure.

So many internet technologies (such as flash) are proprietrary that I
feel we should make every effort to support the success of useful open
source ones.
