Bug#536502: Debian status of crda wireless-regdb?

Comments from my point of view:
  * the legal consequences of disabling crypto verification of regulatory.bin
concern me because I simply do not know if there could be any in the
  future.

Ah, why was crypto verification disabled? In any case the software is
FLOSS and anyone could patch it to set arbitrary regulatory info so a
bit of crypto verification isn't more than a slight bump for someone who
 wants to violate spectrum regulations.

It was disabled to build it sanely in Debian. Work to do this without patching
can be done progressively, I think, by developing and sharing generic patches
to build system with upstream.

  * other consequences of disabling crypto verification are keeping Debian
specific patches in sync with upstream. They are pretty simple though.

Upstream seemed fairly reasonable to me so I imagine they would accept
 anything implemented generically enough.

Ack.

  * your previous comments contained something about developing a package for
backporting to a theoretical lenny + 1/2 - I have no interest in
  targetting
a package for anything other than current testing/sid and using all good
features currently available there. If it is easy enough to make it
backportable patches would be welcome.

Fair enough. Given that the Debian release managers want to freeze for
squeeze in December to sync with Ubuntu, lenny and a half is unlikely to
 happen or be needed.

  * enabled use of dpkg trigger to synchronise the country name - country
  code
matrix parsed from tzdata's zone.tab file. The result is stored in
/etc/default/crda in a section clearly labelled as automatically managed
  by
maintainer scripts. All other modification to the conffile done by admin
  are
preserved.

That bit looks good to me, I haven't tested it though.

Am not fully committed to maintaining these packages, would file ITP's
if I was. Need to get (active) co-maintainers but haven't made a huge effort
  to do that yet.

 Fair enough.

Would you be interested in being a co-maintainer or making package uploads
  with me?

The most I could commit to would be sponsorship and review of the
packaging and upstream's mechanisms. At first glance the current
packaging looks generally good, although I think a fair bit of stuff
could be pushed upstream, even the patches marked Debian-specific.

Okay. I'm afraid I will be unable to work on this until November at the
earliest due to relocating self internationally via a whole bunch of nice
locations. It'd be nice if someone picks up my work, or at least finds
some of it useful as they forge out their own package(s) in the next month
or 3.

Is upstream still embedding the RSA public keys in the crda binary?

Yes.

PS: any idea if GNOME/KDE will be using GeoClue or similar mechanisms to
detect the appropriate regulatory domain and set it automatically?

IIRC, Luis the crda upstream expressed his desire for this to happen somewhen
but I am not personally aware of any work toward this.

Thanks, Kel.

Bug#544401: RFA: libdjbdns -- DNS client library designed to replace the BIND res_*/dn_* library

2009-08-31 Thread Gerrit Pape
Package: wnpp

Hi, I'm looking for a new maintainer for the libdjbdns package. If
you're interested, please followup to this bug report and await my
reply.

 Package: libdjbdns1
 Section: libs
 Architecture: any
 Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}
Description: DNS client library designed to replace the BIND res_*/dn_* library
  High-level lookups:
  .
The dns library provides several easy-to-use DNS lookup routines:
  dns_ip4, dns_ip4_qualify, dns_name4, dns_mx, and dns_txt.
  .
dns_ip4_qualify supports the traditional configuration mechanisms for
hostname rewriting: $LOCALDOMAIN, /etc/resolv.conf, and gethostname. It
also supports a powerful new user-controlled rewriting mechanism.
  .
The functions that read /etc/resolv.conf automatically reread it every ten
minutes, so system administrators don't have to kill long-running programs.
  .
  Low-level lookups:
  .
The dns_domain_* and dns_packet_* functions make it easy to safely parse DNS
packets. The dns_transmit_* functions send DNS queries of arbitrary types to
arbitrary servers. These are the functions used in the dnscache program.
  .
  See http://cr.yp.to/djbdns/blurb/library.html for details.

Thanks, Gerrit.

Jxp (Java scripted page) is a script-processor that process JSP-like files.
It contains a parser to parse the script file into an abstract syntax tree
and a tree processor (JxpProcessor) that will process the syntax tree to
execute the code using reflection API to produce output. The main uses of Jxp
 are:
 .
   * as a script language engine to increase flexibility in the user
 application
   * as a template engine to produce dynamic text output
 .
Some of the main features of Jxp include:
 .
   * Java as script/template language. Why learn another one? ;)
   * Run JSP-like code outside of servlet container
   * support common java language 1.4 constructs (partial 1.5 syntax support
 on jdk 1.4)
   * support common JSP constructs including import directive, declaration, EL
 etc (taglib not supported, yet)
   * practical template sources management framework
   * support caching of parsed syntax tree to eliminate reparse of template
   * a servlet implementation to enable web-scripting
   * extensible processing context for defining built-in function on the
 scripts

Bug#544430: RFP: open64 -- alternative compiler for amd64 and intel64

2009-08-31 Thread Steffen Moeller
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: open64
* URL : http://www.open64.net/
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C, C++, Fortran
Description : alternative compiler for amd64 and intel64

From their web pages:

Open64 is the final result of research contributions from a number of
compiler groups around the world. Formerly known as Pro64, Open64 was
initially created by SGI and licensed under the GNU Public License
(GPL v2). It was derived from SGI's MIPSPro compiler.

Open64 also derives from work done by Intel Corp, in conjunction with
the Chinese Academy of Sciences. They created the Open Research Compiler
(ORC), a specially modified version of Open64 with custom modifications
for researchers. These changes were later folded back into the main
Open64 source tree in 2005.

Open64 has been retargetted to a number of architectures. Pathscale
modified Open64 to create EkoPath, a compiler for the AMD64
architecture. The University of Delaware's Computer Architecture and
Parallel Systems Laboratory (CAPSL) modified Open64 to create the
Kylin Compiler, a compiler for Intel's X-Scale architecture. CAPSL and
Hewlet-Packard are currently working on Osprey, a project to replace
Open64's front end (derived from GCC 2.95's frontend) with the current
GCC front end.

The Open64 compiler suite currently includes compilers for C, C++, and
Fortran90/95 compilers for the IA-64 Linux ABI and API standards. Open64
is currently in version 4.0. Professor Guang Gao and CAPSL at the
University of Delaware are the current gatekeepers of the project.

Description : a Chinese Chess game using UCCI

gmchess is a game of Chinese Chess(Xiangqi). Xiangqi is a two-player Chinese
board game in the same family as Western chess. The game represents a battle
between two armies, with the object of capturing the enemy's general piece.

The AI isn't wonderful, but provides a challenging enough game to all but the
most highly skilled players.

Description : data abstraction library based on GLib

libgda is a (relatively small) database abstraction/access library
integrated on the GLib object model. It can be used as a metadata extractor,
to get information about all database objects in a common way, and as an
ODBC-like wrapper to access data in different engines through an easier API.

Bug#544441: RFA: enemies-of-carlotta -- mailing list manager

Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I would like to find a new maintainer for the enemies-of-carlotta
package. It is a mailing list manager, of which I am upstream. I will
gladly fix any bugs that exist upstream, but I do not wish to maintain
the package in Debian anymore. As upstream, I do not predict any great
changes, indeed no other changes than bug fixes.

If a new maintainer can't be found in two weeks, I'll ask for the
package to be removed from Debian.

Bug#544441: RFA: enemies-of-carlotta -- mailing list manager)

2009-08-31 Thread Lars Wirzenius
I forgot the X-Debbugs-Cc in my original e-mail, sorry.

If a new maintainer can't be found in two weeks, I'll ask for the
package to be removed from Debian.

iulib is a library of image understanding-related algorithms.
It provides basic image processing, mathematical morphology, and machine
learning algorithms.

Iulib implements easy-to-use image and video I/O functions, as well as a
large number of common image processing functions.

Design goals are high portability, easy-to-understand algorithms, no
reliance on STL, and using a minimal set of data structures. Almost all
interfaces are written in terms of just numbers and the simple narray array
class.

Bug#543846: RFS: imagination (adopting orphaned package)

2009-08-31 Thread Andrew SB
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for the new version 1.5-3 of the package
imagination. I am adopting an orphaned package.

It builds these binary packages:
imagination - DVD slide show maker

The package appears to be lintian clean and builds in a clean sid pbuilder.

The upload would fix these bugs: 543846

The changes are mostly trivial:

imagination (1.5-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * New maintainer. (Closes: #543846)
  * debian/control:
   - Add Vcs-* fields.
   - Extend description.
   - Rename Suggests on *-unstripped-* packages to the new
 *-extra-* packages.
  * Add debian/watch file.
  * debian/copyright: Replace deprecated symbol (C) with ©.
  * Move imagination.{xpm,1} to debian/ and install them from
debian/rules. Delete debian/manpages/, debian/pixmaps/, and
imagination.{manpages,install}.

Please note that the new watch file doesn't currently work, but that
is because of a bug in the sourceforge redirector. See:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=543711

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/i/imagination
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable
main contrib non-free
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/i/imagination/imagination_1.5-3.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Kind regards
 Andrew Starr-Bochicchio

P.S. I am not subscribed to pkg-multimedia-maintainers, please CC me
in replies. This package is not currently in pkg-multimedia, but I
might be interested in maintaining it there if the team is interested
in the package.

Description : GNU R package for fine-mapping complex diseases

The idea behind this package is that when multiple strains of
animals that differ in their susceptibility to multiple diseases
are bread over multiple generations, then one can analyse the
contribution that a particular genetic locus has to each of those
diseases. While in the past this approach has been performed
for one disease at a time, this tool extends the statistics
for allowing multiple crosses and thus save animal lifes. A larger
stock of animals with more generations to keep them will further
help producing larger numbers of observable cross-over events
and thus help increasing the resolution of the mapping.
 .
happy is an R interface into the HAPPY C package for fine-mapping
Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) in Heterogenous Stocks (HS). An HS is
an advanced intercross between (usually eight) founder inbred strains
of mice. HS are suitable for fine-mapping QTL. The happy package is
an extension of the original C program happy; it uses the C code to
compute the probability of descent from each of the founders, at each
locus position, but the happy packager allows a much richer range of
models to be fit to the data.

Package: srf-doc
Description: specification documents for the SRF format DNA sequence data
SRF (sort for Sequence Read Format) is a generic format capable of storing
data generated by any DNA sequencing technology. Hence it has sufficient
flexibility to store data from current and future DNA sequencing technologies
at minimal cost of implementation. Benefits include a single input file format
for all downstream applications and a read lookup index enabling downstream
formats to reference reads without duplication of all of the read specific
 information.
 .
This package contains the version 1.3 and the draft of the version
 1.3.1 of the SRF specification.

Description: C++ implementation of the SRF format for DNA sequence data
SRF (sort for Sequence Read Format) is a generic format capable of storing
data generated by any DNA sequencing technology. This library is an
implementation of SRF and provides basic input-output functions.

(To be checked, I have no idea what this library is doing in detail)

The library shipped in the srf source has a dependancy on something not
packaged yet in Debian (Staden's io-lib); I do not expect all this to enter
Debian before the last quarter of the year. srf-doc could of course be uploaded
shortly if requested.

Description : Coin-or branch-and-cut mixed integer programming solver

Cbc (Coin-or branch and cut) is an open-source mixed integer programming
solver written in C++. It is primarily meant to be used as a callable
library, but a basic, stand-alone executable version is also available.

Mixed integer programming (MIP) is a generalization of linear programming (LP)
and allows to find the minimum solution of objective functions depending
linearly on variables, which are linearly constrained and additionally may
have integrality constraints.

Cbc is part of the larger COIN-OR initiative (Computational Infrastructure for
Operations Research) and depends on the COIN-OR Clp linear programming solver
for solving subproblems.

Cbc works well as independent solver (reading files in the MPS format) and as a
solver backend for AMPL.

Bug#544399: ITP: rakudo -- implementation of Perl 6 for Parrot

I won't be able to upload this for a while, because previous to the
current git version the build system didn't work with system installed
parrot. parrot and rakudo release go together (monthly), but the
debian maintainer of parrot only uploads the stable releases. So I
have to wait for the next stable version of parrot to be released and
uploaded to debian, and then for the corresponding version of rakudo
to be released. So it will probably be a few months...

Would it be possible to put a current parrot build into experimental?

ask allison, not me :). anyways, if we were going the experiemental
route, we'd either have to put rakudo from git and parrot from svn, or
wait until the septemeber releases of both of them. either of which I'd
be happy to do, and I have rakudo + parrot packages building from git/svn.

so Allison, what's your opinion?

Description : small scale reflection extension library for the Coq proof
assistant

The name Ssreflect stands for small scale reflection, a style of
proof that evolved from the computer-checked proof of the Four Colour
Theorem and which leverages the higher-order nature of Coq's
underlying logic to provide effective automation for many small,
clerical proof steps. This is often accomplished by restating
(reflecting) problems in a more concrete form, hence the name. For
example, in the Ssreflect library arithmetic comparison is not an
abstract predicate, but a function computing a boolean.
 .
The Ssreflect distribution comprises two parts:
 * A new tactic language, which promotes more structured, concise and
robust proof scripts, and is in fact independent from the reflection
proof style. It is implemented as a linkable extension to the Coq
   system.
 * A set of Coq libraries that provide core reflection-oriented
theories for basic combinatorics (roughly: arithmetic, lists, and
   finite sets).

Bug#466391: Branding

2009-08-31 Thread Jarl Friis
Regards branding.

At least some places the Vodafone Mobile Connect name has changed to
Betavine Mobile Connect, that is, on
http://www.betavine.net:80/bvportal/resources/datacards/devices

So why not just call the debian package Betavine Mobile Connect

I don't know how far that renaming has reached, it may still be named
Vodafone Mobile Connect many places in the software, but that could
be solved by a patch replacing every instance of Vodafone with
Betavine

Now that I have real internet access again... the automated notice was
that 1.4 packages were migrated to testing. So, yes, not relevant to
what you're looking for.

We only package the stable releases because the intermediate monthly
releases are for development testing, not for broader use. I'm willing
to package some monthly releases between now and Parrot's next stable
release (2.0 in January), just to be absolutely sure that Rakudo
packages can enter unstable at the same time as Parrot 2.0. As long as
it's understood that the experimental packages don't supersede the 1.4
packages in unstable/testing, and won't ever migrate to unstable or
testing. They're just throwaway packages for Rakudo testing.

But, it really boils down to a question of whether you have Rakudo users
testing Debian experimental. If not, then it makes more sense to put the
intermediate packages up on alioth.

adding experimental to the sources.list and running apt-get install
-t experimental rakudo is easier than downloading .debs from alioth,
and it means that it's more official (because it's actually in Debian
repos). other than that, I don't see the difference.
