Bug#512360: RFH: openldap -- OpenLDAP server, libraries, and utilities

2009-11-26 Thread Arvid Requate
Hello,

I'd like to offer my help as well.

 We particularly need help with:
 * Triaging Debian bugs [...]
 * Triage of TLS issues. [...]
 * Work on slapd configuration and maintenance. [...]
 * Testing, particularly of the server. [...]

The company I'm working for relies on OpenLDAP as a core component of its
Debian based Linux distribution for enterprise level customers. So I probably
can contribute some amount of work on configuration updates, maintainance and
testing, and possibly route some bugs or help resolving TLS issues that pop
up along the way.

Bug#558090: ITP: camljava -- interface between OCaml and Java via Caml/C interface and JNI

2009-11-26 Thread Stefano Zacchiroli
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Stefano Zacchiroli z...@debian.org

* Package name: camljava
  Version : 0.3
  Upstream Author : Xavier Leroy
* URL : http://pauillac.inria.fr/~xleroy/software.html#camljava
* License : LGPL
  Programming Lang: OCaml, C, Java
  Description : interface between OCaml and Java via Caml/C interface and
JNI

   CamlJava is an interface between OCaml and Java allowing programs written in
   one of the two languages to call code written in the other.
   .
   Interaction among the two languages happen via the respective C interfaces:
   Caml/C interface for OCaml and JNI (Java Native Interface) for Java.
   .
   Currently, CamlJava provides a low-level, weakly-typed OCaml interface very
   similar to the JNI. Java object references are mapped to an abstract type,
   and various JNI-like operations are provided to allow Java method
   invocation, field access, and more.
   .
   A basic callback facility (allowing Java code to invoke methods on OCaml
   objects) is also provided, although some stub Java code must be written by
   hand.

Have you checked if your package actually needs something from the newer
ExtUtils::Manifest? It could be just a spurious dependency.

 My purpose
 is therefore to prepare a libextutils-manifest-perl package similar in design
 to libmodule-build-perl, which is also dually present in Debian, and then to
 submit a backport to backports.org after the package migrated in Testing.

Do you mean a sid+squeeze package is only needed because of a
backports.org policy to only accept packages in squeeze? That seems
a bit backwards to me.

 Please let me know if this would create problems or if more coordination is
 required with the perl-modules package.

We should add

 Provides: libextutils-manifest-perl
 Replaces: libextutils-manifest-perl
 Conflicts: libextutils-manifest-perl ( 1.56)

into perl-modules if there's going to be a separate package too. Even
if it ends up only in backports.org, the control entries don't hurt and
they could be useful for upgrades.

Please file a bug against perl about this if libextutils-manifest-perl
is uploaded.

Bug#558137: RFP: 4store -- an efficient, scalable and stable RDF database

2009-11-26 Thread Kjetil Kjernsmo
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: 4store
  Version : 1.0.2
  Upstream Author : Steve Harris steve.har...@garlik.com
* URL : http://4store.org/
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C
  Description : an efficient, scalable and stable RDF database

4store, an RDF database from Garlik, has recently been GPLed. It is a database
designed to do just one task but do it well. It is primarily designed for
multinode 64-bit clusers, but its author once told me it could also easily be
configured to be the SQLite of RDF, i.e. a small, no-config database with
good performance with the added benefit over SQLite that it would work well for
heterogenous data. It would be interesting to have a debconf script that could
ask the user a simple question of whether it would be in a role as a small
database, single node database or a multihost clustered database.

Some packaging effort is underway, see e.g.:
http://dev.squarecows.com/2009/07/17/4store-rdf-database/

From the upstream web page: 4store's main strengths are it's performance,
scalability and stability. It does not provide many features over and above
RDF storage and SPARQL queries, but if your are looking for a scalable,
secure, fast and efficient RDF store, then 4store should be on your shortlist.

4store is primarily intended to run on Linux platforms, but it is known to work
on single Mac OS X machines. It depends on the Avahi multicast DNS library. It
contains a SPARQL HTTP Protocol server, and uses Redland, which is already in
Debian.

Hi Mikhail,

If you are still interested in packaging this and maintaining the package,
I would be happy to sponsor it. I found your RFS and had a quick look,
and it seems in good shape:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2009/05/msg00259.html

The version packaged there is now a bit old, and there will be at least one
lintian warning now (current policy is 3.8.3 rather than 3.8.1). So if you
want to proceed, I think the best thing to do is to update it to the latest
djapian release, and make sure there are no warnings or errors from lintian
(use the latest version in sid).

It is probably worthwhile passing the extra lintian options -I -E
--pedantic (for informational, experimental, and pedantic checks) and
considering anything they report, but they can give false positives or be
overly picky.

Then I'll have a more thorough look at the updated package and we can go
from there.

Cheers,
Olly

Yes, xbmc does use third party code, which include libraries. It is possible
to use system libraries rather than internal libraries for most of the

libraries where available, but this of course is going to require a lot of
work.

 media/Fonts/arial.ttf

I suppose these can be replaced with the Liberation fonts.

 All precompiled binaries (Some with not so obvious suffixes)

I don't see how these are illegal, unless you mean they don't have the
corresponding source used to compile them, with license. In any case, could
you clarify what you meant by this.

 skin/PM3.HD/HomeSystemIcon Licence.txt is non-DFSG free

The only file this affects is skin/PM3.HD/media/homeinfo-system.png. The
author agreed to allow for that file to be replaced with something suitable.

 skin/Project Mayhem III/fonts/FrancophilSans_readme.txt is non-DFSG free

The Project Mayhem III skin has been removed in the latest upstream source, so
this doesn't matter anymore.

 found in tools/Linux/debian/copyright - DUMB license is non-DFSG;
 requires the licensee to feed their dogs at full moon. Haha, that is so
 funny...

For the issue with the DUMB license, I would be satisfied with either the DUMB
devs (no pun intended) change their license to just simply the BSD (at least I
think that's what their intention was before the extra clauses were thrown
in), or xbmc uses libmikmod instead. I have a preference with switching to
libmikmod, since I think that will be easier than trying to convince the DUMB
devs to change their license.

XBMC can open scripts that are inside a zip file.

Not sure about the issue with the trademark logos. I've spoken with the author
of the skin, and he's doesn't like idea of removing the logos, or replacing
them with some other non-trademarked logo or something similar.

I'm going to need more time to resolve this. I think those logos only impose
usage restrictions such as what size they can be, what color they have to be,
and so forth. Overall, I think these are redistributable. In any case, xbmc
would be placed in non-free anyway, although that was for other issues which
I'll point out later.

Don't know why that file is there.
