Bug#553357: Idea
God'day, Giuseppe, I think I can adopt this package, I just need some instructions to make sure that I will do a good joob. Maybe is better if I co-maintain this package until I get all the process to make this package working. Is it a good Idea? I've read some documentations like new debian mantainers and debian policy. There's anything I can do to make me ready to mantein this package? Kind Regards Bruno Gurgel signature.asc Description: Esta é uma parte de mensagem assinada digitalmente

Bug#551763: License for FOCAL Interpreter
Daniel Moerner wrote: On 12/07/2009 08:31 AM, Dave Pitts wrote: Daniel Moerner wrote: Hi David, I see that you've done the work to write an interpreter for the FOCAL language. Recently, a request for this package was filed in Debian GNU/Linux.[1] I'd be interested in packaging your interpreter for distribution in Debian (and by extension, Ubuntu) because it seems like a useful piece of history. Never thought anybody would be that interested in Focal Well, "that interested" is a loose term! But at least one person was interested, and I think it's helpful to keep work like this around for people to use. It has 82 downloads on Softpedia, at the very least. I also get downloads of the tarball from my site (Not through Softpedia). If we're going to productize this program. I'm going to add files to the tarball like ChangeLog, README, etc. Do you have any other recommendations? Also, I'll start the version numbering at 1.0.0 for this distribution work. However, before doing that, I would need clarification on the license. I don't see one in the source. Under what conditions is the distribution of your interpreter permitted? Some good choices for free licenses may be the GPL or the 3-clause BSD license, depending on your taste. Normally, Public Domain is not as good of a choice.[2] Well, I did the initial coding, in Pascal, of Focal wy before anybody thought of GPL or BSD licenses. I converted it to C in the early 1980s on Dec VAX running VMS. So, what would be the easiest way to set it up? I signed GPL stuff for GCC and GAWK work that I've done in the past. Since it's your work, there should be no trouble. For the gcc work it was a bit different because you would have had to sign over your copyright to the FSF. In this case, you don't have to forfeit your copyright. All you would have to do is choose a license that you like and add it to the source tarball. This would state the license under which you authorize redistribution of Focal as copyright holder of the code of the interpreter. OK, after looking at the GCC source, we have a COPYING file, that contains the license, and comment blocks in the source like: * FOCAL is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under * the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free * Software Foundation; either version 2, or (at your option) any later * version. * * FOCAL is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but WITHOUT ANY * WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of MERCHANTABILITY or * FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. See the GNU General Public License * for more details. * * You should have received a copy of the GNU General Public License * along with FOCAL; see the file COPYING. If not, write to the Free * Software Foundation, 59 Temple Place - Suite 330, Boston, MA * 02111-1307, USA. Anything else? Also, is there a versioning system you use for packaging? Or is this the final version of FOCAL? I occasionally fix things and haven't given much thought to versioning the code. I guess I could start it at version 1.0.0 for these release purposes. What do you think? And how many are interested in a package? It's impossible to say in advance how many people would be interested. But it's my view at least that making pieces of history like this accessible to the public is always worthwhile. Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist * Package name: cope Version : none yet (rc1 as of 2009-12-07) Upstream Author : Benjamin Sago * URL : http://stuff.cytzol.org/cope/ * License : like Perl Programming Lang: Perl Description : colour wrapper for text level programs (e.g. ps, stat, xrandr) cope is a wrapper around programs that output to a terminal, to give them colour for utility and aesthetics while still keeping them the same at the text level. Adding colours on top of text makes it easy to see when something's amiss. For utility, you can stop hunting through your terminal's scroll buffer to locate an error when it's clearly highlighted in red, or locating a network address hidden in dense output when they're marked in yellow and blue (local and foreign, respectively). As for aesthetics, even the simplest utility can be brightened up by adding a dash of colour on top. cope's scripts are written in Perl, so they're as flexible (and fast) as Perl allows. This doesn't have to be very complex at all, if you have a Changelog that would be nice. Before packaging it for Debian I'll also make a brief man page for it, which I will forward to you. >> However, before doing that, I would need clarification on the license. I don't see one in the source. Under what conditions is the distribution of your interpreter permitted? Some good choices for free licenses may be the GPL or the 3-clause BSD license, depending on your taste. They're not really the source of much incompatibility, because people rarely try to use them! I have written a module like this myself for testing some new hardware. On top of the low-level I/O, I defined classes for PCI devices and register sets, and then wrote test cases using them. It was a lot easier to write those test cases in Python than it would have been in C. > Is there something that you want to package that depends on this? 'ubuntu-release -d' should always give you _current_ development release or it will fail with telling you, that the data are outdated (example: ubuntu-release -d --date=2011-01-01). > Debian doesn't have these > problems, since it only uses "unstable". Yes, the name is a bit to generic. Any other suggestions for the name? On the mailing list I found 'release-info'. On my list are now: * release-info * distro-release-info * distro-releases Any preferred name or suggestions? The release packages does not know anything about the running release. It only needs a date (and up-to-date data) for calculating the result. > > To get information about a specific distribution there are > > the debian-release and the ubuntu-release scripts. > > I suppose you mean that there will be different back-end script. > (I suppose that you don't mean that each program will have to implement > a select/case algorithm?) Yes, there are different back-end scripts. Due to different release models the both scripts use different algorithms. The distro data are stored in cvs files (like a table) and then I throw a little bit of Python on it. Subtracting the command line parsing only 60 lines of code are required. > > It's based on the idea posted on the ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list > > [1]. Bug#552705: ITP: mp4v2 -- a library that provides functions to read, eate, and modify mp4 files
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 gtkpod, in fact, only uses mp4v2's metadata functionality. Unfortunately, taglib is a C++ library and gtkpod is written in C, so porting it to taglib is not an option. Reinhard suggested porting it to libavformat - I couldn't find documentation specifically about its metadata functionality, though, and I'm not sure upstream will agree about adding a dependency on ffmpeg, given how conservative they are.
