Do you know if Debian has distribution-local patches? If so, I'd like to take them and move them upstream to the old-maintenance branch on Launchpad. I'd be happy to help you with that. Debian has no patches but Ubuntu has a few and they don't apply to version 0.70 without conflict (although they are still required, i.e they have not been merged upstream AFAIK). See http://packages.qa.debian.org/alltray and the ubuntu patch link on the bottom right. Sponsering a prepared package is not as much work as doing it from scratch - so changes might be not that bad. Maybe they are overestimating the packaging effort, actually ? Probably. I just rebuilded the Ubuntu package which shows four easy to fix lintian problems, but installs and starts fine. With the help of ArgyllCMS, it can create and apply display ICC color profiles. This has at least two selling points: first, it replaces handmade scripts to load ICC profiles at login time; second, it wraps ArgyllCMS and hides the complexity of its command-line under one button (it restricts the available options by doing so, but hopefully that's temporary rather than permanent, since the app is rather new). #debian-gnome (well, one person in there :-) tells me they're interested in maintaining the package. I'll probably upload a first version to experimental and see how it goes from there. Bug#497098: About : RFP: fds -- enterprise-class LDAP server
Hey I saw you submitted this : http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=497098 . And it has not been updated for awhile. Did this get dropped? Regards While the upstream project is now 389 Directory Server, and no longer Fedora Directory Server, I would still like to see a package for it. I know some work was done towards this, but unfortunately it seemed to bog down really quickly. Upstream, I belive some work has been done to make the Directory Server less specific in what libraries it requires, this might make it easier to create a debian package for it. Unfortunately, I do not really have time to help with this, which is why I submitted a request for package rather than an intent to package. Alexander Reichle Schmehl imported the package into pkg-games SVN a long time ago and Cyril Brulebois uploaded a package to experimental changing the Maintainer to the Games Team. I would be willing to completely move it into pkg-games domain with me as an uploader and bring it in shape in the next week. However I have met some problems. The package was imported into SVN including all the experimental upload and the package in experimental still is considered unstable upstream. However as all of it was imported I can't just branch it away. Secondly Ubuntu ships the Version Upstream consideres unstable. I can imagine now 2 possibilities: Either I go the way Ubuntu goes, import the newest Release from Upstream/Unstable and just continue from SVN or I start from new (possibly but not necessarily in git -- no topgit this time, I promise ;)). Any opinions, suggestions, whatever are welcome. If there are none, I'll start to do the thing that seems most sensible to me at that point in time soon. (The Debian packages have the same names as the binaries.) For example: Thank you very much for the hint of those pipe viewers (always nice to have them in the toolkit). If you find this answer unsatisfactory, please tell me. In that case, I'll try to think about how to implement the feature *cleanly* within lbzip2. (Please don't take this as a promise, though.) I experimented a little bit with lbzip2 and pv and it works fine. So, I guess that there are no problems with the delegation that task to another tool. Finally, I can't help but recommend a multi-threaded LZMA compressor to you: you may want to check out plzip [0] [1] [2], originally based on the lzlib-0.7 compression library [3] by Antonio Diaz Diaz, and the compressor module of lbzip2-0.17 by yours truly. Ah, thank you for that. I also didn't know about it. I was here waiting for a multi-threaded version of xz to be implemented. I just took the package created by Daniel Baumann (still sitting in NEW) and compiled it here. After the initial bare-bones, featureless implementation by me (modestly called llzip at that time), plzip continues to be developed / maintained by Antonio Diaz Diaz exclusively. He just released 0.3 a few days ago [4]. That's the version that I'm using here. With it, the pv trick doesn't work so well: it seems that plzip works here by outputting large chunks of data at a time and having many large-spaced periods without any data output, which means that, for a long time, the user doesn't see the progress of the compression (well, I suspect that this happens when the user has big amounts of RAM---in my case, I have an amd64 system with 2GB of RAM). Comparing, on my dual core, (...) (Needless to say, this was a completely non-tuned benchmark.) Thanks. Here is the data that I got, in a completely non-scientific, non-tuned benchmark, with stock software (sorry for the long lines): , | /tmp$ lbzip2 -9 debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso - | pv -c debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso.bz2 | 158MB 0:01:11 [ 2.2MB/s] [ = ] | /tmp$ plzip -9 debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso - | pv -c debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso.lz | 156MB 0:05:14 [ 506kB/s] [ = ] | /tmp$ xz -9e debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso - | pv -c debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso.xz | 155MB 0:03:56 [ 669kB/s] [ = ] ` Here, plzip uses both of my cores (a Pentium D 805, running sid/amd64), and xz uses only one. Despite that, for that particular file (taken from the daily builds of debian-installer, from 2010-01-27), xz offers a smaller file in less time. Is there anything that I may be doing wrong?
