  Description : Certificate Watcher for
Firefox/Seamonkey/Thunderbird/Sunbird/Fennec - This add-on reveals when
certificates are updated, so you can ensure it was a legitimate change

Your web browser trusts a lot of certification authorities and chained
sub-authorities, and it does so blindly. Subordinate or intermediate
certification authorities are a little known device: The root CAs in your
browser can delegate permission to issue certificates to an unlimited amount of
subordinate CAs (SCA) just by signing their certificate, not by borrowing their
precious private key to them. You can even buy yourself such a CA from GeoTrust
or elsewhere.

It is unclear how many intermediate certification authorities really exist, and
yet each of them has god-like power to impersonate any https web site using a
Man in the Middle (MITM) attack scenario. Researchers at Princeton are
acknowledging this problem and recommending Certificate Patrol. Revealing the
inner workings of X.509 to end users is still deemed too difficult, but only
getting familiar with this will really help you get in control. That's why
Certificate Patrol gives you insight of what is happening.

any e-mail addresses included in the certificate, and make the fingerprint

is shown for each certificate, and can be edited in newer releases of
Firefox/Thunderbird/Seamonkey. Furthermore, an entry for direct access to the

Bug#426048: about your fuppes ITP.

2010-03-26 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Hello!

I've read the comments in the fuppes ITP and quickly looked at
fuppes collab-maint git repo.
It seems you neither have an upstream branch, nor anything else
to assist you with creating the orig tarball.
You might want to investigate git-import-orig and the pristine-tar
option.

You might want to work some more on the long descriptions of
some of the packages. It's common to include a brief description
of what the main package is and what use it has in the
plugin packages as well... Imagine someone stumpling
upon any of your binary packages for the first time and
don't know anything about them.

You could drop the things you don't need in your debian/rules
to clean it up (or even consider switching to dh7 for a really
clean rules file).

I read something in the ITP comments about warnings of unneccessary
ldconfig calls and similar. This is usually because of plugins
being incorrectly treated as regular shared libraries.
You might want to exclude /usr/lib/fuppes/* when running dh_makeshlibs:
dh_makeshlibs -X /usr/lib/fuppes/
Also, your postinst/rm scripts seems to manually run ldconfig
on configure every time rather then relying on debhelper adding
it (only) when needed.
While at, do you really want to have the debian/shlibs.* included
in your git repo? You generate them at build time.

I hope my quick review helps you get the package in even better

Bug#575162: texify upstream

2010-03-26 Thread Stuart Prescott

From the copyright file for this package:

http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/t/texify/current/copyright

,--
| It was copied from /local/snacks/bin/ from the computers at
| the Department of informatics, at the University of Oslo.
`-

Which, is where the previous Debian maintainer is (or was) located.

With this maintainer retiring from Debian, it would seem that there is no
longer any access to the upstream for this package.

Any prospective adopter should (a) see if the Department of informatics at the
University of Oslo is interested in becoming an upstream for this package
themselves (seems unlikely) or (b) be prepared to be both upstream and Debian
maintainer.

The package has relatively few bugs historically and a non-zero (but not huge)
popcon so it can probably continue as a QA case for a while even if
considered dead-upstream.

cheers
Stuart

I finally managed to find some time for the package today and have
already pushed my changes to a Git repository on Alioth [1].
So far I have done mostly cosmetic changes. What remains to do is

 · decide if the Gtk interface should be built,
 · patches: which need to be forwarded upstream, which can be dropped,
 · enable multi-threading (see LP #112927),
 · look at the new upstream release.

If you don't want to join the Games Team, you can also send me patches
by mail or I could merge from your repository.

get revisioning information into builds.

The license is GPL, according to http://svnwcrev.tigris.org/.

It is possible to compile svnwcrev in debian lenny, with the following
changes to the config.mk template file:

--- config.mk 2010-03-23 18:45:36.0 +0100
+++ config_mk.template  2006-01-22 22:21:03.0 +0100

I would be happy to see this tool in Debian. I am willing to try make a
debian package, if someone is willing to get it into Debian.

Thanks,

Bug#524135: Progress of Packaging

2010-03-26 Thread Eric Evans
[ Patrick Datko ]
 Package: #524135
 Severity: normal

I wanted to know, how is the progress of packaging
this project, because I need this to package HBase.

I've been meaning to update this report for some time, and I knew when I
saw the ITP for HBase that today was the day. :)

The truth is that I have not made any headway on this in quite sometime,
and it's not for lack of time or motivation, (I'm also in need of this for
a project). The reason I've held off is that (a) under ideal
circumstances packaging/maintaining Thrift would be non-trivial, and (b)
circumstances are far from ideal.

I blogged[1] last year about the challenges of packaging Thrift, but the
executive summary is that it covers a lot of different languages and
frameworks. I had made it as far as 10 binary packages[2] and was still
missing some popular ones (PHP for example). I'd hoped that some
co-maintainers would step forward to help, but none did.

[1]: http://blog.sym-link.com/2009/05/01/thrift_packaging.html
[2]: http://git.debian.org/?p=users/eevans/thrift.git;a=summary

Additionally, I've also become increasingly concerned about the state of
the Thrift project.

Thrift was open sourced 3 years ago and has been in the Apache Incubator
for almost 2 years. During that time they've only managed to make one
release, (which incidentally is unsuitable for my project[3]; we're forced
to use a newer snapshot). Bugs are often disregarded or dismissed out of
hand and patches languish for months (or longer). As of right now, there
are 180 open bug reports[4], and some of those are quite serious[5].

[3]: http://cassandra.apache.org
[4]: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/THRIFT
[5]: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/THRIFT-601 (for example)

So part of my reticence has been about taking on a package like this by
myself, and part of it is that I'm not at all convinced that you can
expect even nominal assistance from upstream.

Having said that, if there were enough extra hands/eyeballs, I might be
willing to pick this back up, but I'd also be fine with someone more
enthusiastic taking it over entirely.

Bug#499376: Compilation of PeaZip

2010-03-26 Thread giorgio.tani.software Gmail
I compile PeaZip with Lazarus/FPC on 32 bit Linux systems, because there
is an unit in the crypto library I use which contains higly optimized ASM
sections which unfortunately compiles successfully only with a 32 bit
compiler - anyway, most of the backend binaries are available only in 32
bit form (as for what I know) so PeaZip package would require anyway
ia32-libs to work properly.

If you want to try a pure 64 bit compilation, I can recommend you to
search for a pure Pascal replacements for the unit containing the
incompatible ASM, http://home.netsurf.de/wolfgang.ehrhardt/index.html is
the website (in German and English) where you can find all units of the
author of the crypto library.

If you need to recompile also the backed executables in res path, there is
a note for each with references for getting sources from respective
authors (all is free software under the OSI definition), most are written
in C.

Due to the frontend/backend architecture of PeaZip, it is fully modular,
which means you can omit to provide any of the executable you want (in
case i.e. of compilation problem), or replace any of them (i.e. with
alternative version, or a 64 bit version if available) without
compromising any other package's features not directly depending on that
executable.

For the same reason, if you prefer, you can without problems avoid to put
in the package the Rar29.so which was written by Igor Pavlov for 7-Zip and
ported to *x by Myspace for p7zip project, which comes under LGPL with the
additional unrar license limitation (of not reverse engineering the rar
compression algorithm).
It is accepted as Free Software on SourceForge, which allows to publish
only what its staff consider licensed under terms compatible with OSI
definition of Free Software, but if you don't agree with SourceForge's
decision you can freely remove it from PeaZip package with no other effect
than dropping support for rar extraction.

Bug#575571: ITP: sushi -- IRC suite operating via D-Bus

2010-03-26 Thread Luke Faraone
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Luke Faraone l...@faraone.cc

* Package name: sushi
  Version : 1.1.1
Upstream Author : Michael Kuhn sur...@ikkoku.de
* URL : http://sushi.ikkoku.de/
* License : Two-clause BSD
  Programming Lang: C, Python
Description : IRC suite operating via D-Bus

The sushi IRC suite consists of a central daemon and several clients, which
communicate via DBus. DBus methods and signals are provided by the daemon to
abstract the IRC protocol. Clients can use these methods and signals to easily
interact with IRC.

The daemon – maki – provides DBus methods and signals that abstract the IRC
protocol to make it more pleasant to use. Consequently, clients using this
interface can focus on providing a good user experience instead of worrying
about implementation details of the IRC protocol. For example, this interface
could also be used to easily write IRC bots in any language that supports DBus.

The suite currently provides a graphical client for GTK – tekka – as well as
one for the terminal – nigiri.
