Bug#576409: Packaging termit for Debian
Hi Evgeny, I've just compiled termit and love it. The fact that it uses lua makes it the perfect terminal to use together with the awesome window manager. I filled a Request For Packaging in Debian: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=576409 Maybe I'll have time to package it myself some day. Two notes to make life easier for the packager: * Please add license headers to every individual source file * Maybe you'd like to make fewer major releases, now that you're on github. A version number of 2.4.0 would indicate a very mature project, but termit is only less then a year old. So I recommend to increase the version number only every three to six months. This way the users and the packagers know, when it makes sense to make an upgrade. The power users and developers can still download every commit as a tarball from github or compile directly from the git checkout. Thank you for Termit! What does maintaining that package involve? Actual linguistic work or just packaging the stuff in a plausibly correct manner? The packaging pretty much works already. Not much work is required to keep that part updated. However, the word list is rather small and outdated. Many words that are factually correct end up marked as wrong. This needs to be improved. The usbfs is marked as deprecated now (I have checked it in the mainline kernel), but on my running system it doesn't (I have here a Lenny kernel). I haven't investigated that much, but I thought I should warn you before you invest too much time in this tool. Well, I will update the tool for supporting the new device nodes too. Also, the package description should be reviewed. It should mention that the tool provides low level (technical details) of the devices. Good, I will add this info too. I will start working on the new support and report it when it's done. It took some time, but now it's done: I have updated Usbview2 for supporting Libusb. In its default configuration, usbfs is disabled, but it can be enabled with ./configure --with-usbfs. Whit usbfs enabled, the user can always switch between usbfs and Libusb (dynamically configurable). The new version '0.4a' of Usbview2 is available under the following link: https://sourceforge.net/projects/usbview2/ Now, I would appreciate if somebody test the SW and give some feedback (change requests are welcome). Bug#535429: xburst-tools for Debian
Hi, I would like to see xburst-tools available on Debian mirrors. The packaging is not ready for that yet since it has an undeclared build-time dependency on a mipsel toolchain, making it impossible to automatically build. Worse, there is no mipsel toolchain packaged for Debian except the native one on mips machines. Sigh. Here is a workaround. The idea is to include a compiled copy of the firmware in the Debian source package (but not the upstream source or repository). Since it is built with free software, I think this would still meet Debian’s guidelines, and most importantly, it would work. :) Meanwhile I will look into packaging cross-compilers for Debian, but that might take longer. Bug#535429: ITP: xburst-tools -- tools for Ingenic XBurst CPU USB boot and NAND flash access
Thanks Jonathan Thanks for advice, [3] will be great. Requires a mipsel-targetted assembler; more precisely, it expects to be able to use mipsel-openwrt-linux-gcc and friends. Options: 1. Package a mipsel cross-compiler. All I can say is it would be great (and unusual) if this happens. The easiest way might be as a patch for the gcc-4.5 source package, though that method doesn’t scale well to multiple cross-compiler targets (it is no good if each gcc version takes forever to build). 2. Split into two packages: one for the usbboot binary and one for the firmware. The usbboot binary would be Architecture: any and built the same way it is already. The firmware would be Architecture: all and built on mipsel only, using the host compiler. Downside: this makes it difficult to contribute, since one needs access to a powerful enough mipsel machine. 3. Include a compiled copy of the firmware in the Debian source package. Since it is built with free software, I think this would still be okay for a Debian package, though it’s not ideal. Thoughts? Jonathan
