Bug#558647: python-occ-0.4 debian package

2010-05-04 Thread Oliver Borm
I've created a debian package of python-occ-0.4 for ubuntu 10.04 and
uploaded it to our ppa:

https://launchpad.net/~cae-team/+archive/ppa

Maybe it is also helpful for the debian project.

The Koran is definitely out of copyright, and thus in the public domain.
While altering the actual text may be pointless (and disrespectful for the
religion in question), it is still allowed, at least in a vast majority of
countries. And taking excerpts or adding commentary is a damn popular thing
to do.

The old maintainer of purple-plugin-pack, Benjamin Seidenberg, is
apparently not active anymore. The currently packaged version is from
November 2007 (uploaded in March 2008).
In July 2009 I packaged a new version of purple-plugin-pack and sent
him the changes I made. After an inital response I haven't heard from him.

I'd like to adopt the package to keep it up-to-date with new upstream
versions and to convert the package to modern dh 7 rules.

An inital version of my packaging work is already in Ubuntu:

Bug#580247: RFP: openvibe -- software platform for the design, test and use of BCI

2010-05-04 Thread Yaroslav Halchenko
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: openvibe
  Version : 0.6.0
  Upstream Author : OpenViBE Team
* URL : http://openvibe.inria.fr
* License : LGPL
  Programming Lang: C++
Description : software platform for the design, test and use of BCI

OpenViBE enables to design, test and use Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI).
OpenViBE is a software for real-time neurosciences (that is, for
real-time processing of brain signals). It can be used to acquire, filter,
process, classify and visualize brain signals in real time.
 .
The graphical user interface of OpenViBE is simple to access and very
easy to use for creating BCI scenarios and saving them for later use. In the
designer, the available functions are listed in the right-hand window. The user
simply drags and drops the selected functions in the left-hand window. He can
then connect boxes together to add processing steps to the scenario being
created. Lastly, the application is started by pressing the Play button to run
 the BCI.
 .

OpenViBE is a library of functions written in C++ which can be integrated
and applied quickly and easily using modules. The platform's main advantages
are modularity, portability, availability of different tools for different
types of user, including programmers and non-programmers, superior code
performance and compatibility with virtual reality technologies.
 .
The software also offers many 2D and 3D visualization tools to represent
brain activity in real time. It is compatible with many EEG- and MEG-type
machines because of its generic acquisition server.
 .
OpenViBE offers many pre-configured scenarios for different applications
including mental imagery, neurofeedback, P300 signals, etc.

Bug#577660: Debian package for Parse::Dia::SQL

2010-05-04 Thread Gaudenz Steinlin
Hi Andreas

I've just discovered your RFP bug for a Debian package of
Parse::Dia::SQL and the discussion you had on the debian-perl
mailinglist.

I'm a Debian Developer and willing to help you with the package and to
sponsor your package once it's ready.

In return I would love if you could fix the bug I reported yesterday.
;-)

Are you still interested in packaging the module yourself? If yes I
think you need at least an unstable chroot (pbuilder or cowbuilder helps
with this). All new Debian packages have to be developed for unstable
and are uploaded there first.

I don't know if you are already a bit familiar with Debian packages. The
basics are covered by the "New Maintainers Guide"[1]. More specific
information for Perl modules can be found on the Wiki pages of the
Debian Perl Group[2].

In my experience, it's either "Qur'an" or "Koran." I think Gunnar used
"Coran" because TTBOMK that's the term that's used in Spanish (except

The short description should not contain the package name, so:
  "python binding for libssh2 library."

> python-libssh2 is a python binding for libssh2 library.
> It was forked and rewrote from scratch using old org.keyphrene
> (http://sourceforge.net/projects/orgkeyphrene/) bindings.

It is usually a good idea to insert the original library's description,
so I suggest the following long description:

-
libssh2 is the thin library implementing client side of SSH2 protocol
as defined by Internet Drafts SECSH-TRANS, SECSH-USERAUTH,
 SECSH-CONNECTION, SECSH-ARCH, SECSH-FILEXFER, SECSH-DHGEX,
 SECSH-NUMBERS, and SECSH-PUBLICKEY
 .
This boils down to the regular terminal, scp and SFTP sessions; port
 forwarding; password, key-based and keyboard-interactive
 authentication.
 .
This package contains the python bindings libssh2. It is a fork and
 rewrite of org.keyphrene.
-

Note that the two first paragraph are a pristine copy of libssh2
description... the I18N teams should appreciate ;)

Regards

Frankli n

This package contain a suite of tools to log OBDII and GPS data in your
car and convert to CSV or google earth KML file.

OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics) are vehicle's self-diagnostic and
reporting capability, which can be use to monitor vehicle speed, engine
RPM, throttle position, oil temperatures and much more.

The package also includes a modular OBDII Simulator

The description could certainly be described further.

Short description is too long. May be just:
"Perl module for HTTPS GET and POST"

> This is a simple wrapper around either of the two available SSL
> modules. It offers a unified API for sending GET and POST requests

I suggest a few improvements:
"Net::HTTPS::Any library is a simple wrapper around either of
the two available SSL/TLS perl modules. It offers a unified API
for sending simple GET and POST requests over HTTPS and
  receiving responses."

> It depends on Net::SSLeay _or_ ( Crypt::SSLeay and LWP::UserAgent ).

I suppose that this last sentence is not part of the description.

My two cents,

Franklin

Regarding the long description,

Not everyone knows that "Othmani script" is a script for Arabic. (I
didn't know it anyway;) So it might be worth mentioning that the text is
in Arabic only (is it?).

Copy/Paste is a trivial feature. You might want to drop it from the
description (except if this feature is fairly unique for Quran readers)

I wonder who many people use the word "Coran" for Qur'an in English. If
this is quite frequent, you might want insert this synonym somewhere in
the description.

My 2 cents,

Franklin

Thanks for the above suggestions.

Yes, the uniqueness is that copy/paste can actually copy the text in
the non-Othmani arabic script (called Imla'i script, that's an arabic
word transliterated, I dunno the proper translation unfortunately). This
is because usually text processors (& fonts) do not support the Othmani
script, hence pasting the verse in a text processor for example would
give un-readable result.

I realized that people using the word "Coran" have french background.

Bug#545264: RFP: quickly -- Program that helps you create software programs quickly

FYI, it seems to build fine doing :
$ dget
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/quickly_0.4.2-0ubuntu1.dsc
then commenting include /usr/share/cdbs/1/rules/langpack.mk in debian.rules
and finally :
$ dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc -rfakeroot

At least on my testing system.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

On the other hand, I don't think the libssh2 description is particularly
useful for a user. The uppercase acronyms aren't friendly. How about
something like this:

  libssh2 is a client-side C library implementing the SSH2 protocol
with support for regular terminal, scp and SFTP sessions; port
  forwarding; password, key-based and keyboard-interactive
  authentication.
  .
This package contains the python bindings libssh2. It is a fork and
  rewrite of org.keyphrene.

Yes, it looks better.

Please see #580034 for the context of this. It's very likely that this
won't be packaged in the end as it has no users in Debian currently.

Well, in fact, in French that is "Le Coran", with a 'C' and not a
'K'. In Italian that is "Il Corano". Interestingly , the word is
always accompanied by the definite article in both languages, although
I do not know if the article should be necessarily be capitalized.

Lingua::EN::Tagger is a perl module which implements a probability based,
corpus-trained tagger that assigns POS tags to English text based on a lookup
dictionary and a set of probability values. The tagger assigns appropriate
tags based on conditional probabilities - it examines the preceding tag to
determine the appropriate tag for the current word. Unknown words are
classified according to word morphology or can be set to be treated as nouns
or other parts of speech.

The tagger also extracts as many nouns and noun phrases as it can, using a
set of regular expressions.

Dear Shaun,

thank you very much for helping us to stay up to date in the field of
next-generation sequencing. Just out of curiosity, will you use the
package yourself, or did you prepare it for a friend or a colleague?

I had a look at your package and have the following comments:

 - It is non-free:

‘Distribution of this Package as part of a commercial software product
requires
prior arrangement with the Developers.’

I updated debian/control accordingly. Since this license is not compatible
with
the GPL, I recommend that you chose another license for your packaging work,
in
order to avoid headaches in the future.

 - We will have to be careful when doing modifications.

‘Distribution of a modified version of this Package requires prior
arrangement with the Developers.’

I am not sure of what it means for the manpages you wrote. If you have
written them
using the output of the programs as a template, they are a derivative of
them,
and the above may mean that we need agreement of the upstream developpers
before
redistributing them. But anyway, manpages are better to be forwarded
upstream. Have
   you contacted them?

 - Location of the databases.

I have seen ‘-DGMAPDB=\"/usr/share/gmap\"’ in the build logs. Does that mean
that the
users will have to install their databases there, or is there a way to
override
this path? In general, I think Debian users expect /usr/share to be
completely under
the control of the packaging system. Perhaps another path would be better?

 - How to cite gmap.

I am preparing a system to transfer bibliographic information from the
packages VCS to the Ultimate Debian Database, so that sites like our web
sentinel can easily include this information. It is not finished yet, but you
can find more information here: http://wiki.debian.org/UpstreamMetadata

 - Package description. How about this one:

Description: spliced and SNP-tolerant alignment programs for mRNA and short
reads
This package contains the GMAP and GSMAP programs to align biological
sequences, and additional utilities to manage genome databases in GMAP/GSNAP
format. GMAP (Genomic Mapping and Alignment Program) is a tool for aligning
cDNAs (complementary DNA) to reference genomes. GSNAP (Genomic Short-read
Nucleotide Alignment Program) is a tool for aligning single and paired-end
sequence reads as short as 14 nt and of arbitrarily long length. It can do de
novo discovery of splice sites (including interchromosomal splicing) or use a
datbase of known splice sites. It also tolerates known single nucleotide
polymorphisms (SNPs) and can align bisulfite-treated DNA.

Maybe it would be good to propose to the authors to proofread this
description,
so that we are sure that I did not under- or over-estimate the possibilities
  of their programs.

Have a nice day,

I had modified my description in the control file thus, before I saw
this email:

-
Description: Suite of tools to log OBDII and GPS data
OBDII is a standard for getting diagnostic information from your car.
The main tool, obdgpslogger, is a command-line tool to log that data,
with your gps position, to a sqlite database. Provided alongside are
various tools used to convert logs to formats such as CSV or Google
 Earth KML.
Also contained in the package is an OBDII and ELM327 simulator, obdsim,
that uses plugins to generate data.

Gary
