Bug#553425: vm Maintainer

2011-02-25 Thread Christian Bryant

You mention there are issues facing this package, and that the
upstream is dead. What exactly are the issues? I'm interested in
taking over maintenance of the package, but would like to have the
whole picture before deciding.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Christian Bryant,
Los Angeles, CA

Bug#615055: ITP: assimp -- Open Asset Import Library

2011-02-25 Thread IOhannes m zmoelnig
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: IOhannes m zmoelnig

* Package name: assimp
  Version : 2.0
  Upstream Author : ASSIMP Development Team

* URL : http://assimp.sourceforge.net/
* License : BSD
  Programming Lang: C++
  Description : Open Asset Import Library

A portable Open Source library to import various well-known 3D model formats in
a
uniform manner.

Assimp aims at providing a full asset conversion pipeline for use in game
engines / realtime rendering systems of any kind but is not limited to this
audience.

The library is designed for maximum stability and flexibility. Written in C++,
it is available under a BSD license. A pure C API exists, as well as bindings to
various other languages, including Python, D and Blitzmax. Assimp loads models
into a straightforward data structure for easy processing by your application.
Various post processing steps (such as general optimization or computation of
extra data like normal or tangent vectors) can be executed on the imported data
to suit your needs.

Bug#615056: ITP: wolf4sdl -- SDL-Port of Wolfenstein 3-D and Spear of Destiny

2011-02-25 Thread Fabian Greffrath
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Fabian Greffrath

* Package name: wolf4sdl
  Version : 1.6
  Upstream Author : Moritz "Ripper" Kroll
* URL : http://www.stud.uni-
karlsruhe.de/~uvaue/chaos/downloads.html (403, please see below)
* License : ID SOFTWARE LICENSE (non-free)
  Programming Lang: C
  Description : SDL-Port of Wolfenstein 3-D and Spear of Destiny
 Wolf4SDL is an open-source port of id Software's classic first-person shooter
 Wolfenstein 3-D to the cross-plattform multimedia library "Simple DirectMedia
 Layer (SDL)" (http://www.libsdl.org). It is meant to keep the original feel
 while taking advantage of some improvements.

The description will possibly also include some more words about Wolfenstein
3-D and Spear of Destiny themselves, but the phrasing on the prospective
product pages at id seemed a bit too excessive. ;)

Wolf4SDL is IMHO the most advanced of the numerous wolf3d source ports, which
still preserves the original game play feeling. Unfortunately, upstream has
vanished by the end of last year. I have reviewed the source code together with
Hans de Goede of Fedora fame and he has already uploaded his RPM package, which
includes our common patch set, to RPMFusion. We agreed to keep sharing patches
among each other and even decided to take over upstream maintenance on github
some day.

The upstream license is unfortunately non-free, but allows for distribution, so
it should be fine for Debian's non-free section. Please find a copy of
debian/copyright attached. If people are interested, I'd like to maintain the
package within the pkg-games team.

Preliminary packages can be found here:

Yes, I'm still working on this. I have a installable package; build the
program is easy. The package has not yet been uploaded because it uses
so many convenience copy of libraries in the upstream tarball (zip
ball?). In consequence the packages libziparchive (#614183) and
flightcrew (#602781) have to be uploaded together. Flightcrew itself
also contains another set of convenience copy of libraries. So the
workload of packaging this single package was at least tripled.

> Is there a plan to push Sigile in the new testing ?

Definitely.

Any help would be appreciated. For example, auditing the licenses of
remaining dependencies, or package the dependencies. ;-)

James,
An entirely fair question!

	This is for JSON::PP which is a different package from JSON by the same
author. It is required or the upgrade of CPAN::Meta. All the same I am
at a loss to know why this is really necessary and I discussing with
upstream before proceeding any further.

Bug#615101: ITP: python-bloomfilter -- A native Python implementation of the Bloom filter probabilistic data structure

2011-02-25 Thread Dererk
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

Package name: python-bloomfilter
Version: 1.0.3
Upstream Author: Jay Baird , Bob Ippolito
, Marius Eriksen , Alex Brassetvik

URL: https://github.com/jaybaird/python-bloomfilter
License: MIT
Description: A native Python implementation of the Bloom filter
probabilistic data structure
 This module includes both the Bloom filter probabilistic data structure,
 together with a Scalable Bloom filter that allows a bloom filter to grow
 without knowing the original set size.
 .
 Bloom filters are great if you understand what amount of bits you need
to set
 aside early to store your entire set. Scalable Bloom Filters allow your
bloom
 filter bits to grow as a function of false positive probability and size.

warnings::illegalproto was implemented so that people can use strictures and

Is there a way to speak with the author for changing to a better license?
I think it is meant the Artistic Version 1 license which seems not to be
DFSG compatible. And instead of GPL 1+ it would be nice to use at least
GPL 2+.

This sounds like an excellent idea. Yes, we would love help to have
the Authenticator officially packaged as a Debian module. Let me know
if you have any specific questions. I just found a little more time to
work on this code for a few hours per week, and I have started adding
a couple of features myself. Will try to finish up my changes later
this week.

Artistic and GPL-1+ is the standard licensing for Perl modules, which
are usually licensed “under the same terms as Perl itself”.

(AFAIK the Artistic License is compliant with the DFSG, but not GPL
compatible. That is why dual-licensing with GPL is used.)

Bug#615002: libjson-pp-perl

2011-02-25 Thread Jonathan Yu
Hi all,

I have done some investigation and believe I can offer some
clarification regarding libjson-pp-perl...

The upstream JSON package formerly contained two key modules:
* JSON (this selected JSON::XS if available, or fell back to the
included JSON::PP module otherwise)
* JSON::PP

Upstream has now split JSON::PP into its own package, instead
replacing it in the JSON package with JSON::backportPP.

So the load order is now:
* JSON::XS (from libjson-xs-perl)
* JSON::PP (from the libjson-pp-perl module that I am preparing to upload soon)
* JSON::backportPP (formerly the JSON::PP, but renamed to avoid
namespace conflicts; this is included with the JSON package)

As far as I can tell, the separately packaged JSON::PP is newer than
JSON::backportPP, so I am not sure what level of support the author
intends for the backportPP module. It is therefore in Debian's best
interests to upload libjson-pp-perl (and as Nicholas mentioned,
CPAN::Meta requires it now, so we will need to upload it in order to
upgrade).

Hope this helps clarify things :-)

Cheers,

Jonathan

JSON::PP was split out to allow it to be included in the Perl core on its own.
The JSON::backportPP is intended to be temporary to ensure that JSON
itself didn't break while the JSON::PP split was tested. I'm not sure
when MakaMaka intends to remove it, but he said he would do so once he
was confident that JSON was properly depending on JSON::PP.
