Bug#567863: RFP: Handbrake - video transcoder
On Mo, Okt 10, 2011 at 07:12:23 (CEST), Rogério Brito wrote: Hi there. I'm just including the Multimedia team, as they don't seem to be subscribed to this bug. On Oct 09 2011, Ralf Jung wrote: Can't be packaged as x264 video codec and aac and mp3 audio codec aren't free. How can that be, I can decode and encode mp3 and view MPEG4 videos without problems, installing only packages from the debian repositories...? Ralf, I think that when Christian wrote that, we didn't have x264 and lame in the main archive. Things have changed since this bug was originally filed. Once we have faac (if it's acceptable for our archive), then it would be lovely to have a new version of handbrake (e.g., from their git tree) in the archive, as it is a frontend for multimedia libraries that quite possibly passes the useable by mom and dad usability test, especially since it comes with sensible presets. I don't think we'll ever have faac in Debian because of its license. See https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/faac/+bug/374900 for details. Luckily, we have vo-aacenc (http://packages.debian.org/sid/main/libvo-aacenc0), which is the aac encoder from android and can encode aac just fine. As far as I know, Handbrake does not even implement any of this. It uses gstreamer, ffmpeg and others. Well, it does implement some things, like, for instance, their decombing routines, which is very nice for some interlaced and almost-interlaced things. As a side-effect, this decombing of theirs results in variable frame rates, which potentially feeds fewer frames to x264 (or whatever encoder is in question), making the bitrates tend to lower. Another side-effect that people may not appreciate because they run fast architectures is that outputting fewer frames, some slower video cards (e.g., in a powerpc machine) can have a fighting chance of playing some videos. I don't know of any implementation of handbrake's decombing algorithm in other software (e.g., ffmpeg/libav, mplayer, mplayer2, gstreamer etc.) Does anyone know? The other transcoders (arista, transmaggedon) are jokes regarding the amount of configurability that they allow. I agree that Handbrake is a really great tool. Actually, I did take a look at the sources and found out, that it would require a lot of efford to get it into debian. The reason is that the ship a lot of patched libraries that we already have in debian. I don't think this code duplication is acceptable for the Debian system. As for this RFP, I think any potential packager should identify the included libraries and start upstreaming the included patches. Then, try to build them against the libraries that Debian already ships. -- Gruesse/greetings, Reinhard Tartler, KeyID 945348A4 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-wnpp-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#638297: ITA: edbrowse -- A /bin/ed-alike webbrowser
Jean-Philippe MENGUAL mengualjean...@free.fr writes: I'd be happy to step in again, and adopt the package, with Jean-Phillippe as co-maintainer if so he wishes, based on his work, with the things I disliked in my reply in the thread above, fixed. I may have not read properly the thread, but I don't understand what you dislike. My earlier mail was this (some of it may or may not apply now, I haven't looked at the most recent version of the package yet): Jean-Philippe MENGUAL mengualjean...@free.fr writes: I'm not sure of release number, but I put -2 as -1 was the NMU and I didn't want to remove this. Since the NMU never hit the archive, and -1 is not an NMU version number anyway, I'd merge the two changelogs into one. Also, looking at the changelog, I see this line: * New upstream version (3.4.7). Closes: #598162, #631027, #506613 To me, this tells that all three of that bugs were reports that a new upstream version exists, while they're not. The first is, but the second is an FTBFS, and the third is a problem with edbrowse failing to work with linksys web uis. I'd reword it a bit like this: * New upstream version (Closes: #598162). * [describe how this was fixed (Closes: #631027). * Now works with Linksys routers' UIs again (Closes: #506613) This has a few advantages, in my opinion: - It makes it obvious which bug is about what, and how they were fixed, instead of the changelog viewer having to look up each issue in the BTS and figure out what they're about. For someone who likes to see a _changelog_, that's a huge plus. - It doesn't mention the upstream version twice (it's already in the package version). - I like it better that way! Furthermore, I couldn't figure out how #631027 was eventually fixed. Perhaps because I'm not familiar with the packaging itself, but neither the changelog, nor debian/control tells me much about it. And while I'm here, a couple of other cosmetic nitpickings: - In override_dh_auto_clean, if you use rm -f, there's no need for the - prefix: the rm will never fail, thus, it is pointless to ignore its exit status. - Wouldn't it be better to simply patch the upstream manpage instead of tweaking it in debian/rules? - Wouldn't exporting CFLAGS=... LIBS=... JSLIB=.. STATICLIBS=... LFLAGS=.. make the rules file simpler? With patching the upstream manpage and exporting instead of overriding, you could get rid of all the overrides, pretty much. Another option would be to modify the upstream Makefile - it is already patched anyway to add a clean target. - dh_installchangelog should recognise and install CHANGES as an upstream changelog, even without the override - Why is debian/compat 5 when you're using dh (ie, debhelper = 7; with correct build-depends)? These are all minor improvements, but I felt like sharing since I'm poking around in the package anyway. That's all I could find with a quick glance.. Oh, and if you insist adding me to Uploaders (not neccessary, I believe, I don't think edbrowse would need two, and I'm perfectly happy being Just an Ordinary User of it), please use alger...@madhouse-project.org. Thanks for taking care of the package! Could you remember me please? Anyway you're already uploader, you can, without problems, become a co-maintainer with I. My problem now is that edbrowse, available on http://demo.accelibreinfo.eu/debian crashes at runtime. I'll have to contact upstream, as gdb isn't very clear and it seems libmozjs is a problem. I'll have a look at this issue, as soon as time permits. Perhaps I can figure something out (unless upstream already did). Do you know of an easy way to reproduce the crash? I'd be happy if you would like to help me, all the more as the programming matter isn't my skill. I know to package, but hardly fixing C problems and libraries problems. And in edbrowse, it seems it's exactly the problem to fix. So you're welcome for any contribution. I'm happy to help with any C issues, or pretty much anything else, but I can do that without being an uploader. If there's anything else I can help with, apart from debugging the crash you mentioned above, please let me know! -- |8] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-wnpp-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#567863: RFP: Handbrake - video transcoder
Hi, okay, thanks a lot for the update - I was not aware that the position wrt such codecs changed so drastically, but I am glad to hear it. And I agree that handbrake would be a great addition, I use it whenever possible to do recode my videos. The package from the original author, designed for Ubuntu, works fine with Debian testing. I agree that Handbrake is a really great tool. Actually, I did take a look at the sources and found out, that it would require a lot of efford to get it into debian. The reason is that the ship a lot of patched libraries that we already have in debian. I don't think this code duplication is acceptable for the Debian system. That might explain why the executable is 16MiB in size... ;-) (it does not ship any .so files though) Kind regards, Ralf -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-wnpp-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Nonetheless, we would like to get caught up to the latest for several reasons, not the least of which is inclusion in Linux distros. Bug#639311: Fwd: SpiderMonkey 8.0
Veracity cannot be packaged for Debian for now due to the dependency on an old, customized SpiderMonkey -- Forwarded message -- From: Pau Garcia i Quiles pgqui...@elpauer.org Date: Mon, Oct 10, 2011 at 1:41 AM Subject: SpiderMonkey 8.0 To: veracity-us...@lists.sourcegear.com Hi, I am packaging Veracity for Debian. Veracity bundles several third-party dependencies, which is disallowed by the Debian Development Guidelines. The most troublesome is Spidermonkey: Veracity depends on a very old Spidermonkey (1.8rc1) and applies 3 patches. I have spent a couple of hours trying to port it to SpiderMonkey 8.0 (patch attached) but I've hit some problems in sg_jsglue.c, sg_vc_hooks.c and sg_uridispatch.c. They all depend on jsdate.h and/or other headers which used to be C-only in 1.8rc1 but now they are C++-only. Are there any plans to port Veracity to a modern version of SpiderMonkey? -- Pau Garcia i Quiles http://www.elpauer.org (Due to my workload, I may need 10 days to answer) -- Pau Garcia i Quiles http://www.elpauer.org (Due to my workload, I may need 10 days to answer) veracity-1.1+spidermonkey-8.0.patch Description: Binary data
Bug#644925: ITP: jellyfish -- count k-mers of DNA
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Package name: jellyfish Version: 1.1.2 Upstream author: Guillaume Marçais gmarc...@umd.edu License: GPL-3+ Description: count k-mers of DNA JELLYFISH is a tool for fast, memory-efficient counting of k-mers in DNA. A k-mer is a substring of length k, and counting the occurrences of all such substrings is a central step in many analyses of DNA sequence. JELLYFISH can count k-mers using an order of magnitude less memory and an order of magnitude faster than other k-mer counting packages by using an efficient encoding of a hash table and by exploiting the compare-and-swap CPU instruction to increase parallelism. . JELLYFISH is a command-line program that reads FASTA and multi-FASTA files containing DNA sequences. It outputs its k-mer counts in an binary format, which can be translated into a human-readable text format using the jellyfish dump command. . Bug#531324: Current state
The current state of the ITP is as follows: The game is packaged and available from [0] for Ubuntu. The package should be policy compliant and is re-buildable on Debian as-is. (I build and use it on Debian.) The sounds as currently provided are not DFSG-free. Not shipping the sounds breaks network play, however, because the assets are checked on startup. The newest upstream release resolved the problems with not DFSG-free textures, so there's clearly progress. The game's assets are not built from the resource files, though, so we rely on them being regenerateable by other means. The resources tarball is just shipped to provide the original source files. It's not exactly guaranteed that the assets are updateable using main tools, but they probably are.
