Perhaps you are right, given the time and the skills and the hardware and the person skilled and motivated enough it can be upstreamed. Ideally it should be. I'm afraid I don't fit for such job: I can't meet you high expectations since I might not have enough time, skills, right hardware, etc. Let's see what Patrick Matthäi is going to tell since he is apparently have a problematic hardware in his possession. r8169 works, but I get approx every 5 minutes timeouts of one minute (where the whole NIC does not work) or I have got a package loss around 50% and it is quite slow. This is an older known problem in Debian, just search for r8168 r8169 debian on google. Don't get me wrong: I love alternatives, but I don't see their value when it comes to device drivers. That's probably because you can afford it due to lack of problematic hardware on your hands. For those who are not as lucky as you and me it might be more difficult. At least we already have one person who might need solution right now. ;) I just get that new NIC with my new mainboard, a Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3-AM3. Since I just have got this hardware since 1-2 weeks, I didn't searched for other solutions, but r8168 works. btw: Linux 3.0 and 3.1 didn't worked. Apparently we have a philosophical problem here: given the fact that nether you nor me can benefit from having the alternative driver it will be over-generalization for us to say that nobody can and therefore don't give them a chance. We're not talking about mandatory driver so alternative might be good for someone. Of course it would be perfect to have one 100% working driver in kernel so all those troubles won't be necessary at all. I believe it will be like this, eventually. There was a fix for this problem in stable linux-2.6: 2.6.32-36: * r8169: Backport changes up to Linux 3.0.2 (Closes: #627704) - Fix support for RTL8102E and RTL8168DP - Add support for RTL8105E, RTL8168E and another variant of RTL8168DP - Add support for D-Link DGE-530T rev C1 But yeah as I told, 3.0 and 3.1 have got the same problems with my NIC. It does this by parsing a flat text file (similar to a drupal .info file) and downloading the sources it describes. In practical terms, this means that it is possible to distribute a complicated Drupal distribution as a single text file. Among drush make's capabilities are: * Downloading Drupal core, as well as contrib modules from drupal.org. * Checking code out from CVS, SVN, git, and bzr repositories. * Getting plain .tar.gz and .zip files (particularly useful for libraries that can not be distributed directly with drupal core or modules). * Fetching and applying patches. * Fetching modules, themes, and installation profiles, but also external libraries. * Drush make does not turn modules on automatically: it only assembles Drupal directories -- it does not touch any database. ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: drush-make Source-Version: 2.3-1 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of drush-make, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: drush-make_2.3-1.debian.tar.gz to main/d/drush-make/drush-make_2.3-1.debian.tar.gz drush-make_2.3-1.dsc to main/d/drush-make/drush-make_2.3-1.dsc drush-make_2.3-1_all.deb to main/d/drush-make/drush-make_2.3-1_all.deb drush-make_2.3.orig.tar.gz to main/d/drush-make/drush-make_2.3.orig.tar.gz A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. Bug#647616: yast2-devtools
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA256 Am 10.11.2011 12:08, schrieb Arno Töll: On 10.11.2011 11:42, Ansgar Burchardt wrote: I'm just curious: what is this used for? Isn't YaST only used by SuSE? YaST was licensed under GPLv2 somewhen in 2004/2005. So it can be used by anyone and inside any distri, although it is currently on used in (open)SuSE, yet. yast2-devtools is the central-pkg, which is need to compile the YaST-core and to develop and/or compile the modules which add functions or config-tools to YaST [1] [2]. Since the effort of a GSoC-project, which made libYUI (I'll talk on that later) independent of zypper (pkg-management in SuSE) [3]. It would be a piece of cake to have the basic YaST-components to be ported to debian. The YasT-modules themselves need to be modded or redevlopped for debian, like make them use debconf, aptitude, dpkg or other debian-native tools instead of SuSE-native ones. libYUI (Yast User Interface) is a nifty lib to develop UIs using ncurses, gtk and qt. The special about it is you only need only one pice of code to get your UI work without having to worry about your tools is run from console, gnome, kde or somewhat else [4]. It was initially designed to make YaST's UI independent from the user's environment. So I think YaST would be a piece software, which could bring debian to larger audience by giving a way to setup daemons or system-settings in an easy way, even when you're just using a console-based (server-)system YaST has been liberated from its non-free origins a while ago. There even was an approach to introduce it to Debian once [1]. So, in theory you could run YaST on every distribution. Question remains whether you really want that, as YaST's messing in configuration files definitively breaks a random number of paragraphs in the Debian policy. YaST itself isn't messing around in the confs. This is the problem of SusE.config (which is called by several YaST-modules inside SusE). SuSE.config is the more or less somewhat compound of debconf. So for debian the modules need to be modded as stated above. That said, I do not know at all, what yast2-devtools is used/needed for, so I should perhaps shut up and let Björn answer. It's also pretty stable upstream - there's one new release since the version we have packaged, but IIUC that's mostly just to incorporate the fixes I made for wx 2.8. Bug#648286: ITP: r8168 -- Realtek r8168 device driver for Linux (DKMS version)
This is to substitute built-in r8169 driver if it doesn't work well. Please don't. If this gets added to Debian then every time there is a bug in in-tree r8169 then users will be told 'oh, try r8168'. And if the bug is not present in r8168 then they may not report the bug at all, and it will take longer to fix. Nobody argue that r8169 should be improved. You've made a good point that including r8168 might delay fixing r8169. On the other hand without alternative driver one might suspect faulty hardware, in which case time will be wasted and diagnosis will be delayed. When reporting bugs people should be able to compare and say hey, this works and that doesn't. While fixing drivers is very important, as far as I understand, Debian role is to provide usable system to people. I'm surprised how easily you prepared to refuse the remedy in favour of (rather obscure) benefit to driver development. Having alternative driver breaks nothing and put nothing at risk. One of the things I like about Debian is that we have plenty of alternatives so for example nobody tell we should kick all web servers but Apache. Having another driver available for our users is not against our traditions. The major reason for out-of-tree driver updates is to support new hardware on older kernel versions, but we already do that through backports. Right, but in this case we can't backport so at the moment for some unfortunate owners of Realtek cards alternative driver is the only option. Nobody likes it but is seems to be necessary. Eventually we can kick this driver out of debian according to popcon survey when it become clear it is no longer needed.. Hi barraud, In #620821 you submitted an ITP for vpnautoconnect, do you still intend to package it? I agree with others in the bug report that it would still be useful to have until (or even after) Network Manager can do this itself. Bug#648286: ITP: r8168 -- Realtek r8168 device driver for Linux (DKMS version)
2011/11/10 onlyjob only...@gmail.com Thanks, Julien. I see you've made r8168-source package as well - nice. I will introduce support for module-assistant if we agree on package inclusion. I would second that as I have another problem with r8169 which doesn't support support resuming from suspend/hibernate. I've been using r8168 for a couple of weeks without any issue. I have even built a package for my own use [0] in case this can help. I will report a bug against r8169 as advised by Ben as soon as I find the time to clearly describe the issue. Cheers, Julien [0] http://git.kirya.net/?p=debian/r8168.git;a=summary -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-devel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org Archive: http://lists.debian.org/canbdodwtdz8coath0ws9b53gse3wmudef58jzlora5ss3z6...@mail.gmail.com BTW, I just want to say that using the r8168 driver correct the problem that I get with my network card when I reboot directly in debian from windows, without closing the computer first. It's about the WOL thing that r8169 doesn't support well or something like that.
Bug#648286: ITP: r8168 -- Realtek r8168 device driver for Linux (DKMS version)
On Fri, 2011-11-11 at 09:40 +1100, Dmitry Smirnov wrote: This is to substitute built-in r8169 driver if it doesn't work well. They can do that now, as we don't stop them from installing the version Realtek distributes. While fixing drivers is very important, as far as I understand, Debian role is to provide usable system to people. Yes. A usable *system*. I'm surprised how easily you prepared to refuse the remedy in favour of (rather obscure) benefit to driver development. Having alternative driver breaks nothing and put nothing at risk. Not directly, no. One of the things I like about Debian is that we have plenty of alternatives so for example nobody tell we should kick all web servers but Apache. Users don't want alternative drivers; they just want a working driver installed automatically. The answer to 'this package is buggy' should not be 'never mind, try another one'. [...] I just *did* backport r8169 from 3.0 into squeeze. Bug#648286: ITP: r8168 -- Realtek r8168 device driver for Linux (DKMS version)
They can do that now, as we don't stop them from installing the version Realtek distributes. And do not help either. So do we care? Users don't want alternative drivers; they just want a working driver installed automatically. The answer to 'this package is buggy' should not be 'never mind, try another one'. Of course everyone wants one working hassle-free driver, preferably free from blobs. But there is a difference between buggy and not working. Our work can stop when driver do not work and it may not be a good time to put life on hold while troubleshooting problematic diver knowing the remedy is out there. At least few of us prepared to do such sacrifice every time driver didn't work for them. [...] I just *did* backport r8169 from 3.0 into squeeze. O, that's what you mean... Great, I'm looking forward to see the feedback from people affected by the issue.
