Bug#468325: #468325 - RFP: urbanterror

2011-11-28 Thread Simon McVittie
Transcribing from IRC with Nameeater's permission, so this doesn't get lost:

10:57 < smcv> Nameeater: fyi, the UrbanTerror RFP is blocked on two things
10:57 < smcv> Nameeater: 1) determining whether it runs correctly on an
unmodified ioquake3, or needs engine changes; and if it needs
  engine changes, whether they're upstreamable
10:57 < smcv> Nameeater: 2) having a maintainer who cares about it
10:58 < Nameeater> smcv: I will have to have a look into #1, thanks for that
10:58 < smcv> Nameeater: as de facto ioquake3 maintainer, I'm happy to help out
with ioq3 issues, but the only ioq3 games I actually play are OA
and Q3A, so I'm not willing to be the *only* active maintainer
  for other games
...
11:01 < smcv> Nameeater: oh yeah, the other thing about UrT is that it's
  massive...
11:02 < smcv> but tbh it has the usual game-mod-team "I can't believe it's not
a license" so I wouldn't be particularly comfortable with putting
  it in non-free
11:02 < smcv> so maybe game-data-packager would be the best way to deal with it
  anyway
...
11:03 < Nameeater> pabs pointed out yesterday that it looked like a big reason
it packaging was stopped due to the lack of data.debian.org
11:03 < Nameeater> its*
11:03 < smcv> that would have been another way to deal with the size
11:04 < smcv> splitting it like I recently did with OA would also help
11:04 < smcv> except that UrT only has two PK3s iirc
11:04 < smcv> so you can't split it very far
11:04 < smcv> you get stuck on "assets.pk3" which is about 500M on its own
11:04 < Nameeater> which leaves me wondering whether its worth packaging
11:04 < smcv> yeah
11:05 < Nameeater> it was pretty much an unzip and run game last time I tried,
and as you say, not many files involved at that
11:05 < smcv> one reason why having it in a distro with a shared engine would
  be better is security support
11:06 < smcv> I haven't checked which ioquake3 vulns are present in the engine
  binaries it comes with
11:06 < smcv> but I expect it's a nonzero number
11:08 < smcv> whereas Debian's src:ioquake3 should be somewhere near secure,
since I (intermittently) track upstream svn, and I'm on their
  "advance warning about vulnerabilities" list
...
1:13 < smcv> officially, urban terror is (still) a Q3A mod
11:14 < smcv> but it bundles some community-provided binaries that let you run
it as a standalone game using a modified ioquake3
11:14 < smcv> and I think in practice those are what everyone actually uses
11:15 < Nameeater> I do believe you're correct, and last time I looked into it
   there wasn't source for anything
11:15 < Nameeater> but back then they wouldn't even say if you could distribute
it, so I'll check it out again
11:15 < smcv> Nameeater: if you want to do the research on the engine, you
  might find these interesting
11:15 < smcv>
http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=users/smcv/ioquake3-upstream.git;a=commitdiff;h=baaee02048cef2db19156414a350d3092409c0b2
11:15 < smcv>
http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=users/smcv/ioquake3-upstream.git;a=commitdiff;h=26964378428e81c0417d02bf9b097edb5eb103d9
11:16 < smcv> those are the ioUrbanTerror code drops from 2007, diffed against
whatever seemed to be the closest ioquake3 svn rev
11:20 < Nameeater> my C knowledge is pretty lacking, but I get the feeling from
reading that, that the mod may run, but with out some of
those changes an ioUrT dedicated server won't let you connect
11:21 < smcv> it's possible

Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I intend to orphan the jabberd14 package. I no longer use
it and active upstream development has practically stopped.
The last upstream release was on July 2007.

My use-case for this package was very simple, just a very
simple jabber server in a domestic LAN, without SSL and
without server to server communication.
For a very simple jabber server I would recommend to use
prosody. For other needs, ejabberd would do just fine.

I remark that because this package is bitrotting and almost
all outstanding bugs have to do with those features that I
don't use and I'm not really interested.

In fact I'm wondering if I should ask its removal from the
archive. If nobody adopt it soon I'll ask for removal.

Cheers,

Bug#649103: RFP: jenkins -- An extendable open source continuous integration server

2011-11-28 Thread James Page

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi Olivier

The original Hudson RFP pre-dated the fork between Hudson and
Jenkins. As you correctly point out most discussion has switched to
Jenkins - I have retitled that bug report accordingly.

I'm working on the last few packages to support uploading Jenkins to the
Debian archive at the moment and have taken ownership of bug 561963 to
make that clear.

I think it makes sense to merge this RFP with bug 561963; I'd not
propose raising an RFP for Hudson unless someone specifically wants it.

Cheers

James

Description : program to rename files to make them sort in given order

This is a simple graphical program that lets you reorder the files
using drag-and-drop and then changes the names of the files such that
their alphabetical sorting matches the ordering you chose.
 .
Currently the renaming consists of prepending each filename with a
 short number.
 .
The program displays thumbnails of files using GNOME libraries.

Description: libverto provides a common interface on top of libev, libevent,
glib, tevent.
The goal is to allow development of asynchronous libraries that will work
with whatever event loop an application happens to be using
Features include automatic detection of which event loops are in a particular
process space and support for writing new event loop modules.

I'm packaging this because it's a dependency for MIT Kerberos 1.10.
It's kind of annoying but libverto has not yet been released so I'll
probably end up packaging a git snapshot. I'll prod upstream and see
if a release can be caused to happen.

Description : Libravatar module for Twisted

Module to make use of the federated Libravatar.org avatar hosting service
 from within Twisted applications.
 .
Libravatar is a free service for hosting profile images tied to an email
address or an OpenID. Inspired by the elegant solution pioneered by
Gravatar, Libravatar takes a federated approach to the problem and allows
domain owners to specify the server that should host images for their
 organisation.

I did know about the chromaprint introduction, indeed. But I didn't see
anything mentioning dropping this plugin, neither in the git/hg
changelogs nor the wiki.

Not that I don't believe you, but Cc: Adrian for confirmation. In any
case, it would have allowed me to learn a solid bit about packaging
shared libs :).

"The new Chromaprint/Acoustid Plugin uses the Acoustid open-source
acoustic fingerprinting service. This replaces the old lastid plugin,
which used Last.fm fingerprinting and is now deprecated. Fingerprinting
with this library should be faster and more reliable."

Hello Connor,

Kai Henry said you were interested in adopting the Debian package for
suckless-tools. Are you still interested in doing so ?

It seems that you found at least two co-maintainers if you want :)

Have a nice day !

Bug#616012: "ITA: screenie -- lightweight GNU screen(1) wrapper"

There's one minor thing I'd done differently: I would have explicitly
mentioned that not only the implementation and the home page changed
but also that the re-implementation is by someone else, i.e. that the
package upstream effectively switched. But the "updated to reflect new
upstream licensing" gives hints in the right direction.

I'll do some further testing of this reimplementation, but from a
first glance, I'd sponsor the package as it is.

Support for this plugin has been dropped in the upcoming beets version
1.0b11 (in development) which introduces chromaprint/acoustid plugin
which is already packaged.

I'll try to isolate the changes on gtkimageview copy (the remaining bugs

Might be worth to take the most striking differences (top-down vs.

Bug#650323: ITP: ipmiutil -- Easy-to-use IPMI server management utilities

2011-11-28 Thread Andy Cress
Martin,

Here's a summary of the differences.
The ipmiutil package provides IPMI functionality similar to ipmitool but it has
certain advantages and additional features:
  * automates common IPMI management functions
  * interprets more event data than other packages
  * includes a severity with each IPMI event
  * allows easier configuration of the IPMI LAN channel
  * supports various drivers and driverless mode also
  * supports other OSs, like Solaris, FreeBSD, Windows, etc.
  * provides automated test cases

Andy

Bug#509815: Dropping iODBC from Debian/Ubuntu, see Debian bug #509815

2011-11-28 Thread Patrick van Kleef
Hi Heinrich,

> in Debian bug #509815 there is an open discussion to drop
> iODBC from Debian (which will result in dropping it from
> Ubuntu).
>
> Looking at the iODBC.org and the iodbc.sourceforge site
> there seems to have been no new developments in the last
> two years.
>
> Do you plan to further support and develop iODBC?

The short answer is yes on both accounts.

First of all we do support iODBC and the ODBC API in general actively both
towards our own customers as well as the general public who have questions on
how to use ODBC API in their own or third party applications as well as assist
in debugging issues relating to both open source and commercial drivers. We
have an active support system in place for anyone with questions, bugreports
etc to go to, as well as mailing lists, forums etc hosted by sourceforge.net.

We actively assist other open-source projects to enhance their ODBC offering,
for instance the code changes we contributed to PHP project to both 5.2.x and
5.3.x branches to allow their ext/odbc code to fully work in 64bit mode which
up to 5.2.6 was completely impossible. We also fixed the handling of the
various ODBC Cursor models in the PHP code. Another project we are currently
actively involved in is KDE/Soprano/Nepomuk, which uses another open-source
product from us called Virtuoso which is also available on most platforms
including Debian and Ubuntu. We also advised them on the usage of ODBC in
general, not specifically towards the use of iODBC.

As for new developments go, please note that the ODBC spec has been stagnant
after Microsoft finished the last big revision (the 3.52 in 1997-1998) which we
implemented. As we have no intentions to add new API functions itself as long
as these will not be available for Windows. For a long time Microsoft pushed
people to ditch ODBC in favor of ADO, however there are rumors that they are
going to revive the ODBC standard which we hope will bring some enhancements to
the areas that were not well defined/explained in the last standard. We
continue to track developments in this area and when this calls for
fixes/additions to the iODBC driver manager code, we will of course make them.

However we are working on one extension to the ODBC standard which deals with
UNICODE support. In all of their documentation Microsoft was very vague about
the definition and use of SQLWCHAR, especially when it comes to non-Windows
platforms. So when we interpreted the standard, we mapped it to the platform
native wchar_t which seemed to make the most sense at the time since this would
allow C, C++ to define the size and it should work with the native libraries in
a portable manner. OpenLink's own ODBC drivers were programmed to do the
translation between internal formats of the db (ucs2, ucs4, utf8 etc) to the
platform native format which is 16bit wide on Windows (using UTF16 encoding),
and 32bit wide on most UNIX platforms (using UTF-32). Note that the specs
indicate this translation lies with the driver.

This approach allowed the user to use standard constructs like:

SQLHANDLE hstmt;
SQLWCHAR * my_cmd;

my_cmd = L"select * from account";
SQLPrepareW (hstmt, my_cmd, SQL_NTS);

which works on both Microsoft and Unix platforms.

However other projects (like unixODBC and QT) chose at some point to use a
2byte UTF-16 encoded multibyte equivalent for portability on all platforms,
which means that all ascii strings need to be converted before they can be
used. For the ODBC standard this means that translation needs to be done within
the application, instead of the driver.

In light of this we started to make an addition to the existing iODBC driver
manager code to allow the driver manager to work in both 2 and 4 byte mode at
both ends (application and driver). Development is not going as fast as i would
like, since other commercial developments have a higher priority, but we are
currently trying to iron out the last bugs before release.

As for having both unixODBC and iODBC concurrently on a platform, i see no
reason why this would be any problem for the runtime parts since they do not
overlap at all. There is a potential problem with the location of the header
files, but we could easily change this for debian (or any other system) to be
installed in /usr/include/iodbc and add the -I/usr/include/iodbc to the
iodbc-config script.

There are many libraries and programs providing similar functionality in any
distribution, allowing the users a choice which they want to use.

One of the features a lot of iODBC users like is the fact that it very readable
trace logs containing both both symbolic and values for all arguments which
allows the user to better understand the sequence of instructions that are send
to the driver and the return values which may influence the behavior of their
application.

I welcome anyone to contact me if they have questions about iODBC or

It would be very helpful to have this package for me too.

Description : SDL-Port of Wolfenstein 3-D and Spear of Destiny
Wolf4SDL is an open-source port of id Software's classic first-person shooter
Wolfenstein 3-D to the cross-plattform multimedia library "Simple DirectMedia
Layer (SDL)" (http://www.libsdl.org). It is meant to keep the original feel
while taking advantage of some improvements.

The description will possibly also include some more words about Wolfenstein
3-D and Spear of Destiny themselves, but the phrasing on the prospective
product pages at id seemed a bit too excessive. ;)

Wolf4SDL is IMHO the most advanced of the numerous wolf3d source ports, which
still preserves the original game play feeling. Unfortunately, upstream has
vanished by the end of last year. I have reviewed the source code together with
Hans de Goede of Fedora fame and he has already uploaded his RPM package, which
includes our common patch set, to RPMFusion. We agreed to keep sharing patches
among each other and even decided to take over upstream maintenance on github
some day.

The upstream license is unfortunately non-free, but allows for distribution, so
it should be fine for Debian's non-free section. Please find a copy of
debian/copyright attached. If people are interested, I'd like to maintain the
package within the pkg-games team.
