Bug#696582: ITP: meritous -- action-adventure dungeon crawl game

2012-12-23 Thread Sylvain Beucler
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Sylvain Beucler

* Package name: meritous
  Version : 1.2
  Upstream Author : Lancer-X/ASCEAI
* URL : http://www.asceai.net/meritous/

  Programming Lang: C
Description : action-adventure dungeon crawl game

Long description:
Far below the surface of the planet is a secret. A place of limitless
power. Those that seek to control such a utopia will soon bring an end
to themselves. Seeking an end to the troubles that plague him, PSI
user MERIT journeys into the hallowed Orcus Dome in search of answers.
 .
Mertious is a action-adventure game with simple controls but a
challenge to find a balance of power verses recovery time during
real-time battles. Set in a fractually-generated world, the player
can explore thousands of rooms in search of powerful artifacts, tools
to help them, and to eventually free the Orcus Dome from evil.

This is actually a re-upload.
I'm part of the Debian Games team and noticed #672759:
RM: meritous -- RoQA; FTBFS; unmaintained; low popcon
  RoQA; FTBFS; unmaintained; low popcon

I'm adressing these points below:

- RoQA/unmaintained: I'll assume that the original packager (sponsored
by tolimar back in 2008) was contacted and is now unresponsive, so
  I'm taking over.
In addition, the game wasn't part of the games team AFAICT and fell
  off our radar.

- FTBFS: just a missing build-dep on zlib

- low popcon: consider this is a game and that people tend to
uninstall them after beating it; other games such as flare or abuse
  are in this range (100-200).
Not that popularity means quality ;)

The game is otherwise finished and, despite the removal of
unfree/unclear music, quite enoyable.

Bug#695130: Please retitle Orphan bug against openmotif if you intent to adopt

2012-12-23 Thread Paul Gevers
Hi Joël,

If you intent to adopt openmotif, please retitle and own bug 695130, so
it shows up in the PTS [1]. I was looking into openmotif to make it
Multiarch for Wheezy, but if you are working on it, I leave you to it.
Do you think you can fix (apply the patch) 673690 soon, so it can still
go into Wheezy? It qualifies for the freeze exceptions [2], as multiarch
is a release goal. If not, I can make a fix for multiarch and let you
have the package afterwards.

Bug#696593: ITP: sun -- sun calculates the sun's rise/set times

2012-12-23 Thread Steffen Vogel

  License : GPL
  Programming Lang: ANSI C
Description : sun calculates the sun's rise/set times, the solar noon and
the daylight time duration

I wrote this tool to easily schedule the switching of my lighting for home
automation.
Its a stand alone binary following the unix paradigm. Its designed to be used
in conjunjtion with cron, at
date etc.

For me this tool is extremly useful as you might note with these examples:

Schedule a BIOS wakeup 10 minutes before the sunrise in Berlin:
  nvram-wakeup -s $(date -d "-10min $(sun rise -q Berlin)" +%s)

Shutdown the system 10 minutes after sunset:
  shutdown $(date -d +10min $(src/sun set --lat=50.55 --lon=-6.2) +%H:%M)

Enable my lighting at cilil twiglight:
  echo ~/bin/enable-lightning | at $(sun set -q Frankfurt -t civil)

The sourcecode is hostet at github:
https://github.com/stv0g/sun

Debian packaging is already completed. I'm currently providing the package in
my own apt repository:
http://packages.0l.de/debian/pool/main/s/sun/

Its based on the solar calculations:
http://lexikon.astronomie.info/zeitgleichung/neu.html
from Arnold Barmettler

PS: Please excuse my mistakes i've propably made. Thats my first ITP and Debian

Bug#695130: Openmotif licensed under a free license (HOORAY)

2012-12-23 Thread Paul Gevers
Hi Joël,

[CC-ing you as I am not sure if you subscribed to the bug]

As the license of openmotif changed into a free license, I hereby offer
my help to get openmotif into shape again for Debian. I propose to do
this a team and put the packaging info on Alioth (if you agree of course).

I am co-maintainer of lesstif, the open source motif alternative, but as
the license of motif improved, I am considering asking retirement of
lesstif as a release goal for jessy (the next Debian release).

What do you say?

Bug#696593: ITP: sun -- sun calculates the sun's rise/set times

2012-12-23 Thread Simon Chopin
Hi,

Would it be possible to have a name a bit less generic and short ? It is
not a command-line tool that people are likely to use on a regular
basis, as far as I can tell.

I'm very bad at naming, so the only one I came up with was "suncycles"
but I'm sure there are better alternatives out there ;-)

Cheers,

Simon

FWIW, two existing way to do that that are already in Debian
are the packages remind and libdatetime-astro-sunrise-perl.
Use of the perl module is pretty obvious; use of remind is too
ugly to show here. :)

A standalone tool is nice, but there would be something to be said for
using an existing library to avoid reinventing this rather complex and
subtle wheel.

Bug#696593: Sponsor?

2012-12-23 Thread Steffen Vogel
Hey *,
thanks for your great feedback!

> Would it be possible to have a name a bit less generic and short ? It is
> not a command-line tool that people are likely to use on a regular
> basis, as far as I can tell.

Uhm, you are right :-/ I've choosen 'sun' because of the signature of the tool:

usage: sun mode [options]
mode is one of: rise, set, noon, daytime, nighttime

The name 'sun' allows you to create easy readable expressions like:

sun rise --query Sydney

Whats about 'solar' or 'suntime'? Any other suggestions?

> Sounds like an interesting project. Have you already uploaded your
> package to Debian mentors [1] to ask for sponsorship?

I've created a RFS [1]

> FWIW, two existing way to do that that are already in Debian
> are the packages remind and libdatetime-astro-sunrise-perl.

Yes, that's correct. I already knew that before I started working on 'sun'.
I decided to choose ANSI C as language to be fast an portable.
I planning to use 'sun' on a very small embedded system.

And second, the algorithm I used for this package keeps place for enhancements
to
calculate the suns position (declination, rightascension).

I'm not really a fan of these perl-modules. That's not my understanding
of small, fast & portable tools as it is being contemplated in the UNIX
paradigm.

There's already an updated upstream version. I added a simple caching
for geonames.org lookups. So I reuploaded the package to debian-mentors
[2].

  Steffen Vogel

Bug#691199: I am requesting more information about adoption of ksh project

2012-12-23 Thread John Dawson
Hello,

I might consider adopting your project, pending a greater understanding of the
scope.

I have 20+ years professional software development experience in C/C++ for many
Unix platforms, but recently I have done many things in C#, flash, java, and
javascript.

I hate to see ksh languish as it is my shell of choice (in fact, the only one
I'm willing to use), and I'm particularly sensitive to a bug so catastrophic
that a simple cd ../ would fail. This is indicative of an absence of
attention to the project that borders on near abandonment. I haven't worked on
official open source projects before, so I'm unfamiliar with the concept of an
"upstream" issue. I would ask what exactly (or who exactly) can introduce
upstream issues, and what is the hierarchy of upstream vs. downstream with
regards to making/adopting/publishing changes to the package. In other words,
who has absolute control, and at whose mercy am I if I undertake this project?
Who is the true owner, and where would I fit in?

Please contact me at wc -- at -- johndawson -- dot -- org (making the
appropriate substitutions) to discuss the specifics outlined above.
