Bug#741487: mozjpeg 2.1 package

2014-09-13 Thread Pierre Rudloff

Hello,

I have built a package for mozjpeg 2.1:
http://mentors.debian.net/package/mozjpeg

But, as I said, it conflicts with the standard libjpeg.

Regards,

Cool; I figured you meant that from your e-mail, but I wanted to make
sure we asked you specifically. Thanks again for responding.

This will enable us (Debian) to package a few packages which contain
these DTDs instead of re-implementing the DTDs.

Miracles had become relative common-places since the advent of
entheogens; it now took very unusual circumstances to attract public
attention to sightings of supernatural entities. The latest miracle
had raised the ante on the supernatural: the Virgin Mary had
manifested herself to two children, a dog, and a Public Telepresence
Point.

Bug#602781: Licenses for DAISY DTDS: ANSI/NISO Z39.86 Specifications for the Digital Talking Book

2014-09-13 Thread George Kerscher
If you create your own DTDs and you have borrowed, even heavily from these,
yes, you would be able to distribute the DTDs. I think 67 of the elements from
dtbook dtds came from HTML.

However, one should not claim that modified versions conform to DAISY or NISO.

I have heard of companies who based a lot of internal work on the work DAISY
and NISO did on these DTDs.

I want to remphasise the Z39.98 Standard, which was designed for modification
and extensibility.

Best
George

Bug#602781: Licenses for DAISY DTDS: ANSI/NISO Z39.86 Specifications for the Digital Talking Book

2014-09-13 Thread George Kerscher
To whom it may concern:

Recently a question came in from Mattia Rizzolo about the licenses associated
with the DAISY DTDs. The DAISY Consortium is the maintenance agency for the
ANSI/NISO Z39.86 Specification for the Digital Talking Book. NISO is the
Standards organization that has issued this Standard, but it is commonly called
the DAISY standard.

The DTDs are freely available from DAISY website; start at:
http://www.daisy.org/z3986 There is no cost associated with the use of these
DTDs.

Many companies will copy and distribute these DTDs for use with their authoring
or playback tools, which is perfectly fine. This may eliminate the need to go
online for validation, etc.
The working group may update the DTDs if errors are found and this will be
announced publically.
The DTDs were developed and highly influenced by HTML and Docbook.

The DTDs may be modified for your use, but you may not claim that a modified
version conforms to the DAISY Standard or the Niso Z39.86 Standard. It is
common for XML and DTD developers to borrow from various standards, and this is
expected.

You may want to look at the ANSI/NISO Z39.98 specification for a more
up-to-date mechanism for content creation that conforms to XML.

I hope this answers any questions about the appropriate use of these DTDs.

Bug#761442: RFP: node-readable-stream -- a user-land copy of the stream library from Node.js v0.11.x

2014-09-13 Thread W. Martin Borgert
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: node-readable-stream
  Version : 1.1.13
Upstream Author : Isaac Z. Schlueter
* URL : https://github.com/isaacs/readable-stream/
* License : MIT/X
  Programming Lang: JavaScript
  Description : a user-land copy of the stream library from Node.js v0.11.x

The readme says:

This package is a mirror of the Streams2 and Streams3
implementations in Node-core.

If you want to guarantee a stable streams base, regardless
of what version of Node you, or the users of your libraries
are using, use readable-stream only and avoid the "stream"
module in Node-core.

This is declared as dependency in node-htmlparser2, but I'm not
sure, whether it is really needed or could be patched out.

Description : a JS code coverage tool written in JS

Yet another code coverage tool for Javascript, with the
following features:
 * All-javascript instrumentation library that tracks statement,
branch, and function coverage and reverse-engineers line
   coverage with 100% fidelity.
 * Module loader hooks to instrument code on the fly
 * Command line tools to run node unit tests "with coverage
turned on" and no cooperation whatsoever from the test runner
 * HTML and LCOV reporting.
 * Ability to use as middleware when serving JS files that need
to be tested on the browser.
 * Can be used on the command line as well as a library
 * Based on the awesome esprima parser and the equally awesome
   escodegen code generator

This project provides a Python package, astropy_helpers, which
includes many build, installation, and documentation-related tools
used by the Astropy project, but packaged separately for use by
other projects that wish to leverage this work. The motivation
behind this package and details of its implementation are in the
accepted Astropy Proposal for Enhancement (APE) 4.

I am still not sure whether this will be built from a separated source
package, of as an additional package of the python-astropy source.

level-packager exports single function which takes a single argument, a
LevelDOWN-API compatible storage back-end for LevelUP. The function returns
a constructor function that will bundle LevelUP with the given LevelDOWN
replacement. The full API is supported, including all optional arguments,
repair(), delete() and copy(). See level, level-hyper or level-lmdb as
example
 use-cases.

Description : streaming zip archive generator - Node.js module

zip-stream is a streaming zip archive generator Node.js module. It was
built
to be a successor to zipstream. Dependencies are kept to a minimum through
the
use of many of Node.js's built-in modules including the use of zlib module
for
 compression.
 .
This module is meant to be wrapped internally by other modules and
therefore
lacks any queue management. This means you have to wait until the previous
entry has been fully consumed to add another. Nested callbacks should be
used
to add multiple entries. There are modules like async that ease the so
called
 "callback hell".
 .
If you want a module that handles entry queueing and more, you should check
out archiver which uses this module internally.

Description : Handle delayed-open on LevelDOWN compatible libraries -
Node.js module

deferred-leveldown is a Node.js module which provides a mock LevelDOWN
implementation that queues operations while a real LevelDOWN instance is
 being opened.
 .
DeferredLevelDOWN implements the basic AbstractLevelDOWN API so it can be
used as a drop-in replacement where LevelDOWN is needed.
 .
put(), get(), del() and batch() operations are all queued and kept in
memory
until a new LevelDOWN-compatible object can be supplied.
 .
The setDb(db) method is used to supply a new LevelDOWN object. Once
received,
all queued operations are replayed against that object, in order.
 .
batch() operations will all be replayed as the array form. Chained-batch
operations are converted before being stored.

  Description : Fast & simple storage - a Node.js-style LevelDB wrapper

LevelDB is a simple key/value data store built by Google, inspired by
BigTable.
It's used in Google Chrome and many other products. LevelDB supports
arbitrary
byte arrays as both keys and values, singular get, put and delete
operations,
batched put and delete, bi-directional iterators and simple compression
using
 the very fast Snappy algorithm.
 .
LevelUP aims to expose the features of LevelDB in a Node.js-friendly way.
All
standard Buffer encoding types are supported, as is a special JSON
encoding.
LevelDB's iterators are exposed as a Node.js-style readable stream a
matching
writeable stream converts writes to batch operations.
 .
LevelDB stores entries sorted lexicographically by keys. This makes
LevelUP's
ReadStream interface a very powerful query mechanism.
 .
 Node.js is an event-based server-side JavaScript engine.

Description : user space driver for AppliedSensor's Indoor Air Monitor

This driver for AppliedSensor's Indoor Air Monitor prints a list with
all connected sensors and their currently measured values to the
commandline. Compatible sensors and further information have been
 documented on http://wiki.micasaverde.com/index.php/CO2_Sensor.
 .
The air quality is displayed on the hardware token by three indicator
lamps with the colours green (= good), yellow (= average) and red (=
bad), the same colors are also printed by this tool.

There is currently no kernel or user space driver for this component in
Debian. This implementation uses libusb (either version 0.1 or 1.0) to
communicate with the sensor. I am currently looking for a sponsor.

Package: wnpp

Owner: Nigel Kukard

* Package name: awit-dbackup
  Version : 0.0.22
  Upstream Author : Nigel Kukard
* URL : http://www.dbackup.org
* License : GPL-3+
  Programming Lang: Perl
Description : Flexible one archive per directory backup tool

This is a backup software package which basically creates one
archive per directory it backs up. This makes searching
through the backup much easier as you can look for which files
you're after in the directory hierarchy. It will only backup
directories which have changed, which makes it rsync friendly.

 - why is this package useful/relevant?

This package is extremely useful in backing up very large datasets or
virtual containers.

It creates one archive per directory being backed up using a number of
compression options.

Should contents change, and those contents are isolated to something like
new files being added, it will not touch the previous archive. This makes
it very efficient and rsync friendly.

As there is one archive per directory being backed up, you can easily browse
through the backup set and choose what you want to restore.

  - do you use it?

Extensively when backing up virtual containers and large filservers.

  - if there are other packages providing similar functionality, how does
it compare?

I do not believe there is a tool which offers this flexibility. Its got
quite a unique purpose.

  - how do you plan to maintain it? inside a packaging team
(check list at https://wiki.debian.org/Teams)? are you
   looking for co-maintainers?

I have multiple paid staff who are employed to maintain the software package
and for whom I will accept MR's for.

I will handle the packaging myself and uploading for the sponsor.

 - do you need a sponsor?

I do need a sponsor.

The package will be on mentors soon:

Description : ephemeral browser-based pluggable transport for Tor

Flash proxies are a new way of providing access to a censorship circumvention
system such as Tor. A flash proxy is a miniature proxy that runs in a web
browser. It checks for clients that need access, then conveys data between them
and a Tor relay.

Tor has bridge relays, but in some cases even these can be blocked despite the
fact that their addresses are handed out only a few at a time. The purpose of
this project is to create many, generally ephemeral bridge IP addresses, with
the goal of outpacing a censor's ability to block them. Rather than increasing
the number of bridges at static addresses, we aim to make existing bridges
reachable by a larger and changing pool of addresses.

Description : standardized, flexible, testable CLI applications
framework for Perl

CLI::Framework ("CLIF") provides a framework and conceptual pattern for
building full-featured command line applications. It intends to make
this process simple and consistent. It assumes the responsibility of
implementing details that are common to all command-line applications,
making it possible for new applications adhering to well-defined
conventions to be built without the need to repeatedly write the same
 command-line interface code.

* Package name: cputool
  Version : 0.0.7
  Upstream Author : Nigel Kukard
* URL : https://gitlab.devlabs.linuxassist.net/cputool/cputool
* License : GPL-3+
  Programming Lang: C
Description : Utility which manages CPU usage and system load

CPUTool allows the limiting of cpu usage of a process or a process group to a
given limit and allows the suspensions of process execution if the system
load exceeds a defined treshold.

 - why is this package useful/relevant? is it a dependency for another
   package?

This package is very useful for running backups from, or any operation which is
disk IO intensive. It pauses the process and waits for system load to drop,
when it has dropped it is resumed. This can occur multiple times per second.

It can also be used to give processes slices of CPU time to use. This is useful
when you want a program to only use a specific amount of CPU time.

Combined with the above, it can limit heavy CPU and IO operations by giving out
only a percentage of CPU time and pausing the process should the threshold be
exceeded.

Another sneaky thing you can do is run PHP in FCGI mode under cputool to limit
CPU usage.

 - do you use it? if there are other packages
providing similar functionality, how does it compare?

I do use this utility on a large number of systems when doing backups or heavy
IO or CPU intensive operations.

and - Auto Nice Daemon
schedtool - Queries/alters process' scheduling policy and CPU affinity
cpulimit - tool for limiting the CPU usage of a process

CPUTool is different that it allows the limiting of CPU time to process groups
in addition to single processes. It also monitors load and pauses the process
should this exceed the specified threshold.

I got the idea for CPUTool from certain commercial vendors who while providing
the source code to similar tools had no intention on me assisting them on
improving them. I then wrote CPUTool which is its entirely own implementation
and only borrows ideas from other projects.

The project will be on mentors soon:

Compass is a CSS authoring framework which uses the Sass stylesheet
language to make writing stylesheets powerful and easy.
 .
Compass-blueprint is a CSS Framework extension for Compass, included
with early releases of Compass but now shipped as separate plugin.

Needed (as recommendation) for newer releases of ruby-compass to avoid
regression: Was previously shipped as part of Compass itself, but not
any longer.

This package will be maintained in the Sass team.

It is indeed bit short. What alternative names for the package can you
propose?

Bug#748321: ITP: raceintospace -- free software version of the Liftoff! board game

Thanks for your efforts in packaging raceintospace. I've noticed that
Hedgewars used to have a similar problem, which they've solved by adding
a compatibility layer for PhysFS 2.0. Using this as a starting point, I
saw that only one more function had to be provided, which I backported
from the 2.1 branch with some minor modifications. With the attached
patch, raceintospace compiles and runs with the PhysFS library from
sid. The compatibility layer checks for the version number of PhysFS, so
once 2.1 is packaged, the code should automatically stop being included.

The only slight drawback is that Hedgewars is GPL-2 only, so it will no
longer be possible to ship raceintospace binaries as GPL-2+. But since
this is only a temporary situation, I think this can be justified.

Hendrik

I would also like some feedback on what the binary executable should be named.

Description : A Digital Synthesis Flow using Open Source EDA Tools

Qflow is a complete tool chain for synthesizing digital circuits starting
from verilog source and ending in physical layout for a specific target
fabrication process. In the world of commercial electronics, digital synthesis
with a target application of a chip design is usually bundled into large
EDA software systems. As commercial electronics designers need to maintain
cutting-edge performance, these commercial toolchains get more and more
expensive,
and have largely priced themselves out of all but the established integrated
circuit manufacturers. This leaves an unfortunate gap where startup companies
and small businesses cannot afford to do any sort of integrated circuit design.

Perhaps the name "abc" is a bad name to use in debian although
it's the correct upstream name.

Bug#761351: ITP: qmenu -- Tool to create simple menus for terminal interfaces

2014-09-13 Thread Andrea Colangelo
Cioè ho detto pubblicamente che voglio impacchettare e caricare qmenu
in archivio. Procedura standard per evitare che 50 persone si mettano
tutte a fare la stessa cosa senza che nessuno sappia degli altri 49.

Intanto, nuova pull request tra poco, stay tuned!
