Hi

>Can you please explain why you used dh_clean and not dh_build or sth

acually the updatepo is something that needs to be done and committed on git.
during in dh-clean ensures you will run it from time to time (at least to create
a source.changes to upload).

Doing in dh_build might not be enough, because most developers will build it in
a
clean chroot, so they won't be able to commit the changes files.

Not really. It was primarily meant as advice for the next time. :-)
You can fix it if you want, though, but you don't need to. (I should
have been more explicit in this regard...)

> As example how its done correctly you cite my own commit?

Not. :-)

You don't need to add changelog items if you fix things in the scope
of the current changelog entry (i.e. if you fix anything which has
been added after the last upload).

For example fixing typos in the current changelog entry doesn't need a
new changelog item (IMHO obviously, but it may be less obvious to
others :-), but if you fix something in the changelog entry for an
already uploaded release, you should IMHO add something like "* Fixed
typo in previous changelog entry".

A common case for this are adding CVE-IDs for security issues fixed in
a previous upload. See this commit for an example:
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/collab-maint/screen.git/commit/?id=bac586ca89a9a17ae732a69c98d9bfe203a40369

> Btw. do you consider the wicd project as active?

Not sure. The translators seem active:
https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~wicd-devel/wicd/experimental/changes/954?start_revid=954

There seems no code change since March anymore. But that's less than a
year ago, so it's hard to say.

the source tree has the same content has the orig.tar.gz tarball.
if you commit a change outside the debian directory), the content changes
simple as this.

So, you can commit only changes in debian directories, while the other changes
can be done on new upstream releases.
(google has many manuals about debian and quilt format)

easier to devendorize, dirtbike turns installed system packages into
wheels, and these wheels can then be used instead of the vendored
packages.

The intent is for dirtbike to be solely a Build-Depends for a limited
set of other packages such as python-pip, python-virtualenv, and any
other packages which vendorize their dependencies.

For now, I plan to maintain this myself (perhaps with other upstream
authors who are also Debian Developers), but it may eventually migrate
to the Python Applications Packaging Team (PAPT).

Owner: Chris J Arges

* Package name: kpatch
  Version : 0.3.1
  Upstream Author : Josh Poimboeuf
* URL : http://github.com/dynup/kpatch
* License : GPLv2
  Programming Lang: C, Bash
Description : Dynamic kernel patching module and utility

Description From Packaging:
kpatch is a Linux dynamic kernel patching tool which allows you to patch a
running kernel without rebooting or restarting any processes. It enables
sysadmins to apply critical security patches to the kernel immediately,
without
having to wait for long-running tasks to complete, users to log off, or
for scheduled reboot windows. It gives more control over up-time without
 sacrificing security or stability.

This package is useful because it provides tooling to support building of
Livepatch modules for Linux Kernel v4.0 and newer. In addition this package
supports using Kpatch on existing kernels by building a module for that
kernel and providing tools to build modules for Kpatch.
I can maintain this package.

Thanks,

lol wonderful!

everybody does mistakes, this is why "git revert" exists in first place.

But your changes in the debian directory (I mean the git history) is not
uploaded in unstable in any way, so it will just be part of the packaging
history.

The main issue is when you commit something in the source directory, then the
orig tarball doesn't have the same source anymore, and you have
dpkg-buildpackage
fail because of modified source.

this is an issue, while everything you commit inside the debian directory isn't
(I mean, the commit itself isn't an issue, the changed stuff it might be :p )

cheers,

G.

Yay.

It though shows that some things are not yet clear. Let me try to
explain them:

All files under debian/patches/ (except "series") are for patching
upstream code and are real patch files.

You've added a file (debian/po/tr.po) somewhere under the debian/
directory. So there's no need to change something under
debian/patches/.

You correctly understood the way the debian/patches/series file works.
It lists the patches in order they will be applied.

But debian/patches/37-tr-debconf-template-translation.patch is
unnecessary as there's no patch in there, just a change log kind of
text.

Please remove debian/patches/37-tr-debconf-template-translation.patch
and its entry in debian/patches/series and just add an item to
debian/changelog instead.

For that changelog item, please prefix it with "[ Toogley ]" on a
separate line and use the phrase "Closes: #759884" (with colon and
hashmark) instead of "fixing" since that specific phrase will later
cause the according bug to be automatically closed once the package is
uploaded.

> ==> Can you give me feedback, please? :)

Sure.

> why do you say the "main development" is done in master, and not in
> stretch, as stretch is merged into stable after a while?

Ok, let's explain the workflow a little bit:

Like the debian/changelog, the development is rather linear. Newest
version always go into the unstable distribution. From there they
migrate eventually to testing (with the same changelog) and what's in
testing will become stable about very roughly every two years.

The phrase "testing is merged into stable after a while" is slightly
misleading. The suite names "testing", "stable", "oldstable" and
"oldoldstable" are more like pointers to specific releases:

* "testing" currently pointers to "stretch",
* "stable" currently points to "jessie",
* "oldstable" currently points to "wheezy", and
* "oldoldstable" currently points to "squeeze".

When Stretch will be released, all these pointers will be shifted by
one:

* A copy of "stretch" will be made and named "buster" (the next
  release after Stretch).
* "testing" will be changed to point to the newly created "buster",
* "stable" will be changed to point to "stretch",
* "oldstable" will be changed to point to "jessie",
* "oldoldstable" will be changed to point to "wheezy",

and "squeeze" will have been moved to the archive of no more supported
Debian releases and hence will have no more code name.

The suite name "unstable" is a special case: It always points to "sid"
which is always the head of everything, i.e. where the development
happens and new upstream versions and packaging changes are added.

So the "master" branch could also be named "sid" or "unstable", but
the it's very common to just use what's common in the Git community
for this kind of branch: "master"

Tags are usually made for each commit from which a package has been
built that was uploaded.

And if there is need for changes in a already released release, only
then it's time for a separate branch -- which will start in Git at the
tag for that version of the package that's in that release.

Let me try to visualize that as a graph:

--**---*---*-> master/sid/unstable/development
  `\ `\ `\ `\
  squeeze wheezy jessie stretch
   ^^ ^ ^
   ||   |   |
  o-o-st. oldst. stable testing

Hope, it's clearer now.

Maybe. No more sure what I referred to here. But hopefully also no
more relevant if I was able to explain where your thinko was. :-)

Bug#801253: O: wicd -- wired and wireless network manager

2016-01-15 Thread Gianfranco Costamagna
Hi,

>my first commit:

>why do you say the "main development" is done in master, and not in
>stretch, as stretch is merged into stable after a while?

no, master is usually what is uploaded in unstable.
After some days in unstable, if nothing breaks, the package reaches "testing"
that now is called "stretch", and becomes candidate for the next Debian stable
release.

Once Stretch is released, testing will be called in another way (Buster) and
the packages
will become flowing from unstable in Buster
(and the testing at this particular day will be called "Stretch")

>==> we would then merge sth unstable/without any testing into the stable
>branch, which doesn't make sense to me.
>
>Or did you just said that because i was trying to build from jessie?

you need to build from sid, and to test changes on sid.
you can't upload to jessie since it is already released (well, you might make
some patches
as proposed-update, but no new releases, and not in the normal development,
when first you need
to fix a bug in sid, let it go in testing, and then you can cherry-pick a fix
for jessie/wheezy and so on)

after opening a bug against release.debian.org metapackage
>
>Sry. i didn't realize that the files generated by the git buildpackage

exactly.

Your commit is partly correct.

The new po file is added correctly, but the changes in debian/patches are
useless/wrong.

debian/patches are used for patching the *source* tree, not the debian
directory.
this way the orig tarball is always the same, and we apply/unapply patches
during build.

since you changed something in debian directory, you can just commit and live
happy.

BTW to see if you need to create a patch, try to change something in the source
tree (don't commit please!)
"dpkg-source --commit"
will compare the source tree with the orig tarball, and extract patches in the
debian directory automagically.
(quilt will also help you in managing them, and also add-patch tool).

BTW, now you need to provide a log, and to check the built binaries, to really
be sure that file entered in
the build directory.

I'm not sure the po file needs some other changes to be correct.

other issues: you need also to create a new changelog entry
"fix blah/foo/bar: closes: #759884" or similar.

and specially, since you committed something handled by debconf (translation of
debian specific strings),
you might also want to run debconf-updatepo to update the strings.
(look e.g. to virtualbox-ext-package source package, where I run
debconf-updatepo in clean target, just to
avoid such situations :) )

cheers!

Gianfranco

Sry. i didn't realize that the files generated by the git buildpackage
are just build artifacts. I thought of them as regular config files, so
i wondered why you hadn't added them.

Bug#810822: ITP: MooseFS

> We're already publishing own packages repository

> MooseFS available directly in Debian! :)

In November 2014 when I was working on introducing LizardFS (a fork of
MooseFS) to Debian, there were no publicly available source code for MooseFS
-- no tarballs or source code repository. Later it became possible to request
MooseFS sources by filling web form and hoping that sources will be sent over
email. Even though now MooseFS sources can be freely downloaded there are no
public bug tracker and no public VCS. Lack of VCS means one can not isolate
(and backport) fixes without great difficulties.

Moreover only crippled "community edition" of MooseFS is free software as
MooseFS developers apparently focused on proprietary "PRO" edition.

Debian already have MooseFS' fork -- LizardFS. To my knowledge at the moment
MooseFS do not offer noticeable advantages over LizardFS while the latter
seems to have slightly more features.

For quite a while LizardFS is developed with community using public VCS and
bug tracker (GitHub) as well as Gerrit code review system and continuous
integration system. LizardFS have more development transparency than MooseFS
ever had.

I believe that poor governance of MooseFS motivated forking and it appears
that MooseFS developers still did not learn their lesson.

***
Based on the above I recommend to refrain from introducing MooseFS to Debian.
***

Please note that IMHO MooseFS versus LizardFS situation have many
similarities with MySQL vs. MariaDB situation where poor Oracle's governance
and focus on proprietary addons discourage community from working with them.
(MySQL is not as bad as MooseFS because MySQL have public bug tracker).

As I object to introduction of MooseFS to Debian I would object to
introduction of MySQL if MariaDB were already available.

Having both is a burden and non-negligible overhead.

With all due respect to MooseFS's former innovations and legacy I think for
now it would be best to refrain from debianising MooseFS and re-evaluate
situation in the future if there will be any development.

Bug#810822: Debian repository contains a fork of MooseFS

MooseFS to Debian but there are numerous cons.

As far as I'm aware that was deliberate choice in order to allow seamless
upgrades from MooseFS. I think renaming is planned but it is a low priority
thing.

Well thankfully it is not a race... Since MooseFS do not have public bug
tracker or VCS I supose you might be in unique position to compare speed of
development. However independent observer will hardly be able to reach the
same conclusion.

I disagree. For Debian there will be undesirable overhead from having two
similar software products. It would also cause needless confusion for our
users. When choosing between the two I give preference to LizardFS due to
greater potential and development transparency. At this time introducing
MooseFS to Debian is unnecessary but situation may change in the future.

Archive::Tar::Minitar is a pure-Ruby library and command-line utility that
provides the ability to deal with POSIX tar(1) archive files.

The implementation is based heavily on Mauricio Ferna'ndez's implementation in
rpa-base, but has been reorganised to promote reuse in other projects.

Bug#811069: ITP: lbfgsb -- Limited-memory quasi-Newton bound-constrained optimization

2016-01-15 Thread Gard Spreemann
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Gard Spreemann

* Package name: lbfgsb
  Version : 3.0
Upstream Author : Ciyou Zhu, Richard Byrd, Jorge Nocedal, Jose Luis Morales
* URL : http://users.iems.northwestern.edu/~nocedal/lbfgsb.html
* License : BSD-3-clause
  Programming Lang: Fortran
  Description : Limited-memory quasi-Newton bound-constrained optimization

The library is a widely used implementation of a bounded,
limited-memory BFGS algorithm.

A search on codesearch.debian.net reveals that at least the following
packages in Debian bundle duplicates of the code:
- python-scipy (see also #778635)
- vxl
- nwchem
- plastimatch
- psi4

I believe that Debian should provide lbfgsb as a standalone library,
as it is useful in its own right and its presence could lead to code
deduplication in the future.

Note that upstream's tarball
(http://users.iems.northwestern.edu/~nocedal/Software/Lbfgsb.3.0.tar.gz)
contains a few prebuilt binaries, and is also a minor tarbomb.

Upstream seems very inactive in the sense that the code appears to be
"done". I have maintained a package for personal use since 2013 and
have never experienced problems. I thus feel I could handle maintaing
the package also for a wider user base going forward.

I would need a sponsor.

  Description : memory-hard hashing function

Argon2 is a password-hashing function that can be used to hash passwords
for credential storage, key derivation, or other applications.
 .
There are two main versions of Argon2: Argon2i and Argon2d.
Argon2i is the safest against side-channel attacks, while Argon2d provides
the highest resistance against GPU cracking attacks.
 .
Argon2i and Argon2d are parametrized by:
  * A time cost, which defines the amount of computation realized and
therefore the execution time, given in number of iterations
  * A memory cost, which defines the memory usage, given in kibibytes
  * A parallelism degree, which defines the number of parallel threads

Description : A coalescent simulator for genome-scale sequences

scrm simulates the evolution of genetic sequences. It takes a neutral
evolutionary model as input, and generates random sequences that evolved under
the model. As coalescent simulator, it traces the ancestry of the sampled
sequences backwards in time and is therefore extremely efficient. Compared to
other coalescent simulators, it can simulate chromosome-scale sequences without
a measurable reduction of genetic linkage between different sites.

Bug#770129: RFP: html5tidy -- “tidy” HTML 5 in the wild to well-formed XML or HTML

2016-01-15 Thread Jim Derry
I support closing this bug. There is already an existing request to update
the current tidy package from current source.

We have an auditable trail back to the original distribution including
control of the sourceforge site. Tidy isn't a fork or experimental, not
abandonware, and is in active development. The request for including an
experimental fork should thus be closed.
