It great that upstream still supports the 3.2 branch, it reduces the
pressure to upgrade to 3.4. Although I can't find the release schedule
for OSG to determine how long 3.2 will be maintained alongside 3.4. Do
you have more information from OSG upstream about their plans for 3.2 & 3.4?

3.2 has been around for a while and is included in most distributions,
very few have 3.4 already (Gentoo, Arch & MacPorts), so everybody not
building from source themselves is still using 3.2.

I don't understand what you're trying to say about dropping packages
without warning. Are you concerned that if Debian switches to 3.4 along
with all reverse dependencies, that OSG users will be inconvenienced by
not having 3.2 in Debian any more?

Dropping reverse dependencies that don't work with 3.4 is an option to
not block the transition for too long, but that shouldn't happen without
warning when properly handling a transition.

AFAIK only Markus Wanner has tested his packages with OSG >= 3.3 and the
results were not encouraging. That just means that his upstreams need to
work on their OSG 3.4 support so we can incorporate those changes in
Debian to keep everything working.

I expect that qgis, osgearth, sfcgal, ossim & otb will all need changes
to support OSG 3.4 too. Once the 3.4 packages are in experimental the
reverse dependencies can be tested and bugs filed.

> I think that your OSG-dependent work is not going to be harder —quite

Because of the interdependencies of the various GIS packages, I don't
want them to use different OSG versions. That is asking for trouble.

OSG is a reverse dependency of GDAL, which requires rebuilds of its
rdeps every new upstream release. Having another OSG version in the
distribution means at least another reasonably big package that needs to
be tested every time including its rdeps that also depend on gdal. The
VTK5/VTK6 unpleasantness was a constant pain in the gdal transitions
too, I'd rather not have OSG take its place now that we're almost rid of
VTK5.

Please talk to the Release Team about your plans to maintain two OSG
branches, if they don't share the concerns I expect them to have there
is nothing stopping your from packaging 3.4 separately. If they do, it
may save you some work on the separate package.

Kind Regards,

Bas

Umh, now, I haven't checked as atm I don't have anything handy to check
this, and I'm not and apache2 master, but it really ought to work
anyway; unless you explicitly allow it again it should really work.

On the bright side, I've made changes to my little deployment and now
I'm using the -apache2 package too.
I've made some changes to it, I think the most "difficult" change is

that name's cool for me! :)

I don't know. I've yet to enable automatic renewals. Given that I'm
still doing stuff and playing with it I run so often anyway.

Also, automatic renewals implies cron: that means deciding how often you
want to do that. And considering that letsencrypt.sh does not have a
silent mode really useful for cron (I wouldn't want to be "constantly"
emailed just to know that nothing has been done).

And also means we need to install a letsencrypt.sh user or something to
run it with, and then IMHO it'll become a really complicated package for
a shell scrip...

I'm not a ngnix person, I wouldn't know how to do it.
What about leaving it for somebody else to supply a patch?

Yes, this should be done upstream.

What do think is it needed after all of this?

Bug#745027: Missing dependencies

2016-04-05 Thread Stephen Paul Weber
Debian stable users will start reporting bugs for really old releases of
vdirsyncer on my issue tracker. And while Debian's documentation may have
made this situation extremely clear, apparently nobody reads it. This is
already happening with other software.

Hmm. That is very inconsiderate of such users. I would expect users who
know how to report bugs to be better educated about where to report them
(that is, not to report to upstreams, for example).

Because of this I think having vdirsyncer in Debian Sid only would be
a better idea.

That is very sad. Hopefully I will be able to use the sid package as
a basis for a backport for my users.

Security backports are not at all what I'm talking about. I mean that Debian
stable users will start reporting bugs for really old releases of vdirsyncer on
my issue tracker. And while Debian's documentation may have made this situation
extremely clear, apparently nobody reads it. This is already happening with
other software.

And while I do apprechiate packagers of all operating systems caring about my
software (and don't want to dismiss the work they're doing), I'm completely
opposed to Debian's model of patching older releases of deprecated software
just for their platform. It essentially forks that older release into a
completely new project, but keeps the name and contact information from the
original project intact. I would call it phishing, except this is probably
well-documented.

Because of this I think having vdirsyncer in Debian Sid only would be a better
idea.

Currently, upstream *actively* updates 3.2 and 3.4 series. You can
watch from their downloads page that latest releases (3.2.3 and 3.4.0)
were released the same day; if you go to upstream's repo at github you
can see that any patch not changing the ABI is back-ported to both: 3.2
branch was updated just 5 days ago, the same time as their trunk.

Many of the questions on the user mailing list are about 3.2 series,so
it is still widely popular, even if we chose to simply disregard Debian
packages that currently do not work with 3.4, dropping them without any
warning.

I think that your OSG-dependent work is not going to be harder —quite
the opposite, since you can choose whichever stable version works or
benefits into your packages, but if that were not the case, I'm of
course open to suggestions.

Regards,

Alberto

Bug#745027: Missing dependencies

2016-04-05 Thread Stephen Paul Weber

I suspect that if vdirsyncer makes its way into stable before 1.0, it
essentially means I'm forced into long-term support of whichever release is in
stable. However, ideally I'd like to only support the latest release of
vdirsyncer.

To be clear: this is only true if you are the Debian maintainer for
vdirsyncer. If someone else is the maintainer (as, reading this thread, it
seems is the intent) then it is *their* job to backport any relevant
bugfixes and provide any support to Debian stable users. As upstream, you
only ever have to support official versions that you provide, of course, and
not Debian versions.

I'm really excited to see this packaged! This is a very useful tool that
I would like to deploy on more of my systems.

Probably not, you just need to care about the target architecture list.

Fyre is a software that interactively renders Peter de Jong maps
(chaotic functions). I'm looking for a new maintainer. This Debian
package is very easy to maintain. I have sponsored this package once and
more accidentally have become the maintainer. I have never used the
software myself other than playing around with it.

Bug#820107: RFP: cockpit -- makes it easy to administer your server via a web browser

2016-04-05 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: cockpit
  Version : 0.99
  Upstream Author : Stef Walter , et.al.
* URL : http://cockpit-project.org/
* License : LGPL-2.1+
  Programming Lang: C
Description : makes it easy to administer your server via a web browser

Hello!

Cockpit is a framework for doing Administrator tasks via an interactive
web based interface. The implementation sits on top of a websockets bridge
over dbus. It communicate with standard system components over dbus to
reuse their capabilities instead of reimplementing them. It also
leverages dbus activating capabilities to avoid having things running
when they're not used.

I'm filing this borderline RFP, ITP, RFH, RFA. Packaging work has
already been done and are available from:
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/collab-maint/cockpit.git

The initial packaging work was done by Michael Biebl and I've recently
updated it. Neither of us have enough time to properly maintain this in
Debian, so I'm posting this to hopefully find someone who has.

While the current package when built from the above repo should be
functional there's some remaining work to be done before it is
ready to be uploaded for NEW review. Lintian helpfully detects
some licensing issues w.r.t. for example javascript "evil" license
as well as usage of bundled libraries. Suggesting solutions for this in
cooperation with upstream is likely needed. Upstream is very interested
in seeing cockpit included in Debian. Further work needed would also
be for a designer to create a "branding" (theme) for cockpit suitable
for Debian deployments.

Please also see storaged RFA bug: #820099

If you're interested in working on and maintaining cockpit in Debian
then please get in touch. I'm personally willing to act as a co-maintainer
and I guess so is Michael. Initial focus would be to get the package
ready for NEW review and once that milestone have been reached I'm willing
to sponsor uploads if you're not already a Debian Developer.

Andreas Henriksson

Bug#820099: RFA: storaged -- Disk Manager

2016-04-05 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Hello!

This is a borderline RFA/RFH. I've already packaged storaged, which is
a fork of udisks2 but more targeted at supporting advanced "enterpricy"
storage solutions. It's currently sitting in experimental, since I don't
have time to properly maintain it myself and thus shouldn't upload it
targeted at testing/stretch.
Many backends are currently disabled since their dependencies are
currently not available in Debian.
I've also not properly tested that it's functional, but TTBOMK it is.

Further information can be found at:
https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/storaged

Like the packaging vcs at:
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/collab-maint/pkg-storaged.git

There's also interest from upstream to see Debian support and their
bug tracker has an issue for this, see:
https://github.com/storaged-project/storaged/issues/41#issuecomment-205769607

Upstream has packaged the dependencies which are not available in Debian
in separate Ubuntu PPAs and updated the storaged package in an Ubuntu PPA
to enable the new backends, which should serve as a very good base for
someone willing to maintain these in Debian!

If you'd like to see storaged (which is an optional but quite central
dependency of cockpit-project.org) in a future stable Debian release,
then this is your chance to help out!

Get in touch if you'd like to be the primary maintainer of storaged
in Debian. I'm willing to assist as a co-maintainer and can also sponsor
you if you're not already a Debian Developer.

Regards,
Andreas Henriksson

Bug#819816: ITP: debops -- Ansible based server management utility

2016-04-05 Thread Maciej Delmanowski
Hello,

The base repository contains just scripts which are a frontend and glue
between Ansible and playbooks/roles. Any ideas how the rest of the project,
meaning the playbooks and roles themselves, should be handled, if at all, in
Debian?

Having a .deb package per role (separate git repository) seems a little
overkill, and the number of roles would only grow over time. On the other
hand, preparing a 'debian/' directory for easier packaging of all of the roles
should be easily doable. The roles could alternatively be bundled some broad
categories which would reduce number of packages involved, however that might
be tricky when each role is tracked separately with its own version tags.

Is there any precedence in Debian similar to this issue?

Thanks,
Maciej

Yes unfortunately Lin-guider is Linux only for various reasons. I have an
idea to port it to MacOSX, but I just have no time to complete it,
however I do not think mas port would be of Debian's interest. Never tested
it on FreeBSD, and most probably it would need some porting in order to
work mainly because of video for linux which is used in some parts. Is that
a problem that is Linux only?
