If this only works with SteamVR or other proprietary backends, or in general if Debian doesn't have any Open Source backend for this, it'll have to go to contrib, not main.

I have done some work on the packaging locally, but I haven't pushed it to the repository because I did not have time to test what I did and if I remember correctly, after merging the new upstream version, patches needed updates and the package did not build correctly anymore.
