I can't remember what I found when I investigated this, but was it that
libsyncthing.so was used to provide an embedded copy of the Syncthing
server? If so, it seems to me that the correct course of action is to
forever disable it, because Syncthing Tray should use the
Debian-provided Syncthing (user-specific) systemd service. In addition
to correctness, in combination with "loginctl enable-linger user" this
allows the Syncthing daemon to continue to run if X crashes (or is
killed), or when the user logs out without shutting down the system.

If Syncthing Tray wants to manage Syncthing daemon startup (ie: other
than the restart and shutdown functionality provided by the web GUI),
then it should use systemctl --user or the dbus interface. The
behaviour for non-systemd users who use the built-in launcher should be
something like the following the following: Syncthing Tray starts an
unmanaged syncthing daemon using the copy of Syncthing installed from
the bin:syncthing package.

No need to worry about this until after cpp-utilities and qtutilities
uploads of course.

P.S. Apologies for the email chaos, I'm still in the process of

Bug#884575: ITP: syncthingtray -- a tray applet, plasmoid, and Dolphin integration for Syncthing

2021-11-21 Thread Nicholas D Steeves
Hi Hannah,

Once again, sorry for the long delay. I was also waiting for consensus
at #998165, because source:Description does not yet appear to be
permitted by Debian Policy.

Hannah Rittich writes:

Yes, I can create the first two at what will probably be round two of
the reviews, but I recommend waiting for syncthing-tray, because you may
prefer a "gbp" style repository for it, for ease of unbundling using
Files-Excluded. Syncthing-tray also shouldn't be uploaded until the
first two packages clear the NEW queue, so there's no rush.

It looks to me like Martchus is bundling a subset of his fork of
upstream Syncthing. This should be excluded from the Debian
orig.tarball. This can be done with a script and a source-cleaning git
branch, plus merging the cleaned tag to debian/main rather than merging
the upstream tag. Alternatively, it can be automated by using gbp's
support for Files-Excluded.

The definition of "unbundling" depends on the context. Sometimes it
means a source package split, but in this case it means deleting
Marchus' fork from Syncthing-Tray's source. If it's unused, then this
shouldn't cause any problems at this time. If at some point it becomes
default then it is better for the build to fail loudly rather than link
against a custom libsyncthing. At that time the decision becomes: 1)
depend on Debian's Syncthing source and link it into the expected place,
or use a build-system config key to point Syncthing-Tray's build system
to the correct location. 2) Use a build-system config key to explicitly
disable this functionality.

Cool, and of course, no pressure. The main reason I propose this is
because it gives you increased autonomy (allows you to upload a set of
packages without needing a sponsor). When I had to depend on someone
for every single upload I was frustrated an demotivated by the long
waits...because unfortunately it seems that windows of free time often
don't align, you know?

Wonderful! I'm not sure if anyone knows them by heart by the way.
Most people probably just remember where to look something up when to
confirm that someone is currently Policy-compliant or current
best-practises.

Bug#998178: ITP: martchus-cpp-utilities -- C++ utility classes for Syncthing Tray

2021-11-21 Thread Nicholas D Steeves
Hi Hannah,

I've fixed all of these issues on my local branch, so if you find this
stuff boring I can take care of it. If you're considering pursuing
Debian Maintainer (uploading) status it's important to learn why these
are significant.

Is there any reason you've chosen debhelper-compat 12 rather than 13?
If not, please use 13.

control:

  * source:Description does not yet appear to be supported by Policy (see
bug #998165). I think you're prioritising uploading this package
rather than evolving Debian Policy, so I'd recommend
  * "libmartchus-c++utilities5-dev" should be Section: libdevel
  * has trailing whitespace (extra newline. Yes, this is nitpicking)

copyright:

  * Upstream-Name: qtutilities

Other than that, so far it looks good. I'll wait for your reply before
creating the repo. Also, that repo will be created with the name
"martchus-cpp-utilities".

Cheers,
Nicholas

* Package name: python-shelxfile
  Version : 6
  Upstream Author : Daniel Kratzert
* URL : https://github.com/dkratzert/ShelXFile
* License : Expat
  Programming Lang: Python
Description : read and write SHELXL syntax files

This is a full implementation of the SHELXL file syntax. Additionally it
is able to edit SHELX properties using Python. The implementation is
Python3-only and supports SHELXL after 2017.

Shelxfile always keeps the file order intact. Every SHELX instruction
like DFIX or an atom is stored as an class object in the list
Shelxfile._reslist. When writing the Shelxfile content to disk, it wites
the _reslist content to disk.

Shelxfile tries to detect all possible syntax errors that SHELXL would
not like either. If Shelxfile.DEBUG is True, more output about syntax
and other errors are printed out. Otherwise, the parser is quiet except
for really severe errors like a missing unit cell.

I hope to use this package to check the syntax of SHELXL files.
Moreover, python-shelxfile is a dependency of FinalCif which would be
nice to have in Debian.

Description : a language for fast, portable computation on images and
tensors

Halide is a programming language designed to make it easier to write
high-performance image and array processing code on modern machines.
Halide currently targets:
* CPU architectures: X86, ARM, MIPS, Hexagon, PowerPC, RISC-V
* Operating systems: Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Qualcomm QuRT
* GPU Compute APIs: CUDA, OpenCL, OpenGL Compute Shaders, Apple Metal,
Microsoft Direct X 12
Rather than being a standalone programming language, Halide is embedded in C++.
This means you write C++ code that builds an in-memory representation
of a Halide pipeline using Halide's C++ API. You can then compile
this representation to an object file,
or JIT-compile it and run it in the same process.

- ---

I have performed initial debianization in
https://salsa.debian.org/LebedevRI-guest/halide/-/tree/debian/v12.0.1
the produced DEB's are functional, as far as i can tell.

While it is not a preparatory dependency for any further package,
it's a bit of a chicken and egg problem. I wanted to play around with
halide as far back as 2019, but back then they had a very rudimentary
CMake support, and wasn't packaged anywhere. They happily improved
their CMake support, so the only problem now is that it's not packaged :)

Ideally i would like the package to be accepted into pkg-llvm team.
I don't expect it to require too much effort to maintain.

While i have been using debian for quite some time now,
i'm not a debian developer, and i'm not as deeply familiar with the packaging
side of things. Naturally, i don't have any upload rights.

Description : BearSSL is an implementation of the SSL/TLS protocol (RFC
5246) written in C

BearSSL is an implementation of the SSL/TLS protocol (RFC 5246) written in C.
It aims at offering the following features:
- Be correct and secure. In particular, insecure protocol versions and choices
of algorithms are not supported, by design; cryptographic algorithm
implementations are constant-time by default.
- Be small, both in RAM and code footprint. For instance, a minimal server
implementation may fit in about 20 kilobytes of compiled code and 25 kilobytes
of RAM.
- Be highly portable. BearSSL targets not only “big” operating systems like
Linux and Windows, but also small embedded systems and even special contexts
like bootstrap code.
- Be feature-rich and extensible. SSL/TLS has many defined cipher suites and

Description : fbtftp is Facebook's implementation of a dynamic TFTP
server framework. It lets you create custom TFTP servers and wrap your own
logic into it in a very simple manner.

python3-fbtftp is a dependency of a TFTP proxy built by me that is used
to provision hardware at our datacenter. We currently build it
internally and publish it on our internal repository, but I figured this
would be a nice opportunity to get started with official Debian
Packaging.

I need a sponsor for this package.

Hi Antoine and Stephan,

I just added now the GRUB 2 integration and a README.Debian.
You can now review it. And I think it would be better to first upload
this to experimental? So a bit more experienced Debian users can test
it first.

Note that I mention in README.Debian one nasty bug/issue:

In EFI mode the keyboard only works if you have the CSM aka legacy boot
also enabled:

https://github.com/martinwhitaker/pcmemtest/issues/2

Upstream doestn't say anything there that this will change. Issue was
closed with the hint it's documented. And it will just run with default
settings.

Is for you my salsa repo enough or just I also upload to mentors?
Git repo is in git-buildpackage format:

https://salsa.debian.org/fzielcke/pcmemtest

TIA
Felix

i would suggest not blocking on the grub deployment. you can probably
just deploy whatever architecture the package was built from, in any
case.

Bug#1000311: ITP: python-meshzoo -- simple geometric meshes

2021-11-21 Thread Drew Parsons
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Drew Parsons
X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-de...@lists.debian.org, debian-scie...@lists.debian.org

* Package name: python-meshzoo
  Version : 0.9.0
  Upstream Author : Nico Schlömer
* URL : https://github.com/nschloe/meshzoo
* License : GPL-3
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : simple geometric meshes

When generating meshes for FEM/FVM computations, sometimes your
geometry is so simple that you don't need a complex mesh generator
(like pygmsh, MeshPy, mshr, pygalmesh, dmsh), but something simple and
fast that makes use of the structure of the domain. Enter meshzoo.

Examples: Triangle, Rectangle, Regular polygon, Disk, Möbius strip,
Sphere (surface), Ball (solid), Tube, Cube.

Required for running meshplex tests (liberating from the current
tangled dmsh patch).

To be maintained under the Debian Science Team alongside meshplex and
Nico's other python packages.
