Bug#1073813: RFP: shikane -- dynamic Wayland output configuration tool focusing on accuracy and determinism

2024-06-18 Thread Antoine Beaupre
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
X-Debbugs-Cc: team+swa...@tracker.debian.org, debian-r...@lists.debian.org

* Package name: shikane
  Version : 1.0.1
  Upstream Contact: https://gitlab.com/w0lff
* URL : https://docs.rs/crate/shikane
* License : MIT
  Programming Lang: Rust
  Description : dynamic Wayland output configuration tool focusing on
accuracy and determinism

shikane (/ʃiˈkaːnə/) is a dynamic output configuration tool focusing
on accuracy and determinism.

It automatically detects and configures connected displays based on a
set of profiles. Each profile specifies a set of outputs with
additional parameters (e.g., mode, position, scale). A profile will be
applied automatically if all specified outputs and modes can be
perfectly matched to the currently connected displays and their
capabilities.

This is a Wayland equivalent for tools like autorandr. It aims to
fully replace kanshi, surpass its inaccuracies and add new
features. shikane works with Wayland compositors supporting versions
>=3 of the wlr-output-management protocol (e.g., compositors using
wlroots v0.16).

Features

* generation of all compatible (display, output, mode)-combinations, ranked by
exactness
* specify multiple matching rules per output
* restrict the matching to only certain display attributes
* choose between regex, substring or full text based attribute matching
* full cardinality matching algorithm
* ad-hoc profile switching
* export current display setup as shikane config.toml
* state machine defined execution
* execute commands, profile and display names are supplied as env vars
* one-shot mode

This is similar to kanshi, already packaged in Debian, but differs by
being written in Rust and supporting more features like saving the
current profile, for which kansi is currently lacking:

https://todo.sr.ht/~emersion/kanshi/81

I would love some rust folks to look into this, as I do not have the
cycles to learn rust packaging right now.

 Go implementation of "Exponential Backoff And Jitter"
 .
 This package implements the backoff strategy described in the AWS
 Architecture Blog article "Exponential Backoff And Jitter"
 (http://www.awsarchitectureblog.com/2015/03/backoff.html). Essentially,
 the backoff has an interval time.Duration; the *nth* call to backoff
 will return an a time.Duration that is *2 n *interval*. If jitter is
 enabled (which is the default behaviour), the duration is a random value
 between 0 and *2 n * interval*. The backoff is configured with a maximum
 duration that will not be exceeded; e.g., by default, the longest
 duration returned is backoff.DefaultMaxDuration.

Binary package names: python3-bpack

 The *bpack* Python package provides tools to describe and encode/decode
 binary data.
 .
 Binary data are assumed to be organized in *records*, each composed by
 a sequence of fields. Fields are characterized by a known size, offset
 (w.r.t. the beginning of the record) and datatype.
 .
 The package provides classes and functions that can be used to:
 .
  * describe binary data structures in a declarative way (structures can
be specified up to the bit level)
  * automatically generate encoders/decoders for a specified data
descriptor
 .
 Encoders/decoders (*backends*) rely on well known Python packages like:
 .
  * struct (form the standard library)
  * bitstruct (optional)
  * numpy (optional)
  * bitarray (optional) - partial implementation

 Zellij is a workspace aimed at developers, ops-oriented people
 and anyone who loves the terminal. Similar programs are sometimes
 called "Terminal Multiplexers".

 Zellij is designed around the philosophy that one must not sacrifice
 simplicity for power, taking pride in its great experience out of the
 box as well as the advanced features it places at its users' fingertips.

Packaging zellij requires packaging over a hundred crates in its dependency
tree and this number could only grow when it comes to packaging each of the
crates. I am not a DD, which means I need quite active sponsorship to make
packaging this possible. I have been on this effort for sometime now and
have ~50 crates packaged, of which about 20+ are uploaded and the rest are
awaiting upload with RFS. I am a DM, and I could take care of the packages
once they are uploaded to NEW and accepted. And I intend to maintain this
under the rust team umbrella.

 ORAS works similarly to tools you may already be familiar with, such as
 docker. It allows you to push (upload) and pull (download) things to and
 from an OCI Registry, and also handles login (authentication) and token
 flow (authorization). What ORAS does differently is shift the focus from
 container images to other types of artifacts.
 .
 ORAS is the de facto tool for working with OCI Artifacts. It treats
 media types as a critical piece of the puzzle. Container images are
 never assumed to be the artifact in question.

Hi there,

Just to note that Emmanuel and myself may be interested in helping to
maintain kpatch. It may be useful for the linux-livepatching ITP
(https://bugs.debian.org/1070494).

Dimitri, are you still interested in maintaining kpatch? If you don't
object, we will try to package the latest version, look at the existing
bugs when it was removed, and try to reintroduce it. Any objection to
that?

Cheers,

The packaging work is mostly done, which can be found in the Rust team
repository debcargo-conf, under src/{cntr*,container-pid}. Next is to find a
sponsor willing to upload.

Hi.

Please kindly find an RFS at
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1072802. It may be curious
that its bug number is immediately after this ITP.

Thanks for notifying.

I don't see any clause in the policy that requires including the year, if the
original LICENSE file does not. IMO it's impolite to unnecessarily interpret.

I'm sure this follows Debian conventions:
https://codesearch.debian.net/search?q=On+Debian+systems+the+full+text+of=1

Sure.

It's a personal preference.

It would be great, but the upstream didn't even provide a help message. Time
allowing, I'll ask upstream for it.

Sure.

Valent is a GTK4 app utilizing the KDE Connect protocol. This allows

While it is currently in alpha stage it works well enough for me right
now.

Bug#961603: Also useful for fpdf2

2024-06-18 Thread Elena ``of Valhalla''
This package would also be useful for fpdf2, since upstream runs it to
prepare the files for some of the tests.

Right now I've disabled those tests and they aren't a big priority of
mine, but bringing them back would be nice.

(I have no experience with packaging java, nor with java in general, so
I'm not going to pick this up, sorry)
