Bug#982741: RTL8821cu firmware license issue

2021-02-14 Thread Alexander Gerasiov
Hello, RealTek Team.

I have the question on licensing issue with RTL8821cu firmware.

When packaging the RTL8821CU driver[1] for Debian project I found that
it includes firmware in hal8821c_fw.c as encoded BLOB.
In the file it is stated that it's covered by the GPL-2 license[2].

According to GPL paragraph 3 when you distribute binary code you should
provide sources as well[3], but there are no source code for firmware
available. That's why we cant include the firmware (and driver itself)
in the Debian GNU Linux distribution.

As I can see RealTek has common practice to release drivers under
the therms of GPL, but firmwares under BSD-like license[4].

To solve the problem (and prevent GPL violation), please provide
firmware sources (under the therms of GPL v2) or clarify the license
for the firmware if it differs from the driver itself.

Thanks for pointing out on this moment. Totally miss it. I'll try to clarify
that issue with copyright holder. (They have many of fws in
kernel/firmware-realtek, so there should be some common practice for realtek to
relicense or something like that)

Subject: RFP: portfolio -- Portfolio Performance - an open source tool

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: portfolio
  Version : 0.46.6
  Upstream Author : Andreas Buchen
* URL : https://www.portfolio-performance.info/en/
* License : Eclipse Public License 1.0
  Programming Lang: Java
Description : Portfolio Performance - an open source tool to
calculate the overall performance of an investment portfolio

Very powerful app to track your investment. Some of it's features from
official site:

* Record the full history of your transactions: purchases, sales,
  taxes, fees, ...
* Calculate performance indicators such as the True-Time Weighted Rate
of Return or the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) for your holdings.
* Update historical quotes from a variety of sources: Yahoo Finance,
Finnhub.io, Quandl, or AlphaVantage. Alternatively, scrape quotes
from HTML pages or JSON documents.
* All data is stored in XML for further processing and can be exported
  as CSV or JSON.
* Rebalance your investment portfolio based on a freely defined Asset
  Allocation.
* Keep foreign currency accounts using the exchange rates published by
  the European Central Bank (ECB).

I, personally, will be glad to help in packaging, but I'm not familiar
with Java and Maven, so need someone who could help with this.

It lets you glob over a dictionary as if it were a filesystem via

Most internet banking systems are capable of exporting account transactions to

Not in ofxstatement, but in ofxstatement-plugin-name or ofxstatement-plugins.

First of all I'l like to see in archive plugins I wrote and use myself
=) But of course it would be good if there will be all of them.

I was thinking about this. And would like to talk with guys from Python
apps packaging team.

Create separate package for every plugin looks like an overkill, may be
it would be better to merge them in one package. But since I'll put
them under team maintenance (I believe it's the right move), it would be
better to follow best practices.

  Programming Lang: Ruby
Description : Ruby library that creates temporary files and directories
for testing

TestConstruct is a DSL for creating temporary files and directories during
 testing.
 .
Using construct is as simple as calling within_construct and providing a
block. All files and directories that are created within that block are
created within a temporary directory. The temporary directory is always
 deleted before within_construct finishes.
 .
There is nothing special about the files and directories created with
TestConstruct, so you can use plain old Ruby IO methods to interact with them.

It's used in autotests by homesick (#778471)

It is unclear what rip is in this context - seems it is something
unavailable in Debian, and therefore probably unsuitable for long
description (at least without being properly introduced).
Yep, unfortunatelly, my MTA put my previous mail to /dev/null and I was
too lazy to write normal description one more time.

So for now it's just a copy-paste from offsite. =)

Homesick seems to be quite related to vcsh. Would be nice if long
description compared with that.

...or better: Perhaps vcsh obsoletes homesick, or vice versa?
They are similair, but I don't like vcsh myself. I'll mention this in
long description, yes.

It would be good if you two coordinate. CCing Alexander therefore.
I'm in heavy reformatting package from the link above. (Only can-utils,

I started creating a debian package from scratch, too, before being

Right now I've asked my college to make clean-room rewrite of some

I think I'll do an upload this week or the next one. If you have any
ideas or want to join packaging on alioth, you're welcome. But please
contact me prior any work, because current version on alioth is very
different from one I'm working on. (And because of many changes I don't
see a reason to upload broken state into git repo right now.)
I'll rebase my packaging stuff, fixup for the latest changes and will
let you know. Maybe we can work together then and pick the best things
 from both approaches.
I finished my packaging stuff nearly a month ago and contacted Alexander
by private mail without response so far. My efforts are available at

I'd like to get forward here. @Alexander: Maybe you can provide me with

Description : Fully configurable apache suexec binary

Original suexec do some strict checks on start up to provide some security.
This checks are really good, but unfortunately the only way you can configure
it - recompile from sources.

Another problem of original suexec is that is requires that running script
should be owned by the same user suexec setuids to. But there are situation,
when you want different users be able to run shared script (owned by root for
security), or you may want to setup wrapper for some file's types (e.g.
/usr/bin/php-cgi for .php) which is common for all users. In such cases
original suexec will not work, but suexec-conf will do.

suexec-conf is the configurable version of classical suexec from apache.

For now it allows you to configure everything, you could configure for
classic suexec on compile time. And it also support always_allow option where
you could list scripts/command which should be owned by root, but not the user
suexec setuids to.

It provides an easy way to construct, send and receive XML-RPC messages on the
client side, and process XML-RPC messages on the server side.
QXML-RPC licensed under LGPL.

I use this library in some projects and suppose it could be useful to have it
in the repository.

Description : Network Traffic Accounting and Monitoring Software

NeTAMS stands for Network Traffic Accounting and Monitoring Software.
It is built for UNIX and works for networks with Cisco routers or PC Unix
routers (Linux/FreeBSD/Solaris). Several methods of traffic gathering are
 supported (tee/divert/ip_queue/libpcap/ulog/netflow v5 and v9/netgraph),
 database storage (BerkleyDB/MySQL/PostgresSQL/Oracle/Radius), aggregation,
visualization, notification etc. It is possible to block traffic based on
quotas, web authorization, account balance (billing); manage bandwidth, MAC
assignmant violations, RADIUS services, create a flexible accounting and
 filtering policies.

For now there are some license issues (gpl code links with openssl), so I
should also wait for upstream to fix this.
