Hi!

Thinking about it I see no point in keeping the package longer in
Debian. So instead of orphaning it, I think we should go directly to
removing it.

I havn't used it myself for quite some time and it doesn't seem anyone
else is actively using it nowadays. Also I can't think of anything
ethtool and others can't do (and much more).

Well, holding it back would be possible, but why? If there's no need to
have the package right now (apparently there isn't, or you wouldn't ask
to hold it back ;) rejecting it, so you can reupload a new -1 package
sounds like the nicer way. So I just rejected it.

What's the difference to ssh-copy-id, which is already part of the

I skimmed over RC bugs open against orphaned packages, and stumbled over
this one.

On a first glance it seems trivial to fix (just update build-depends,
and build-with, the symlink in the orig.tar.gz and the filename in
debian/rules, and that's it), however I retain from uploading my fix, as
I've no way to test it.

Looking at popcon, there seems be a handfull of users, but most seem to
just have it installed but not in active use.

I might be a bit fast, given that the package was orphaned in July and
RC buggy "just" since August, but I'm honestly wondering, if it wouldn't
be better to just remove it.

Thanks for your interest in Debian, but are you sure this package is
needed?

It has been part of Debian previously, but given up by it's former
maintainer (see http://bugs.debian.org/538384 for details). In the
removal request he said "it would need substancial reworking (upstream
wise, not packaging wise) for modern environments, while at the same
time there are other similar packages in debian already."

So I'm wondering if there has been any new development since then? Also
it seems, that the Homepage you mention above is kind of dead; last
changed in 1999, and the last version offered there for download is
3.4.4, which seems to be even older than the version in Debian's
oldstable release.

So can you you elaborate on why the package should be reintroduced and
if there's any upstream activity (and if so, where?)?

Description: Library for autodection charset of Russian text
LibRCD is used by RusXMMS project for encoding auto-detection.
It is optimized to handle very short titles, like ID3 tags,
file names and etc, and provides very high accuracy even
 for short 3-4 letter words.
Current version supports Russian and Ukrainian languages
 and able to distinguish UTF-8, KOI8-R, CP1251, CP866, ISO8859-1.
If compared with Enca, LibRCC provides better detection accuracy
on short titles and is able to detect ISO8859-1 (non-cyrillic)
encoding what allows to properly display correct ID3 v.1 titles.

For an adoption yes (as the package got removed, there's nothing you can
adopt). However, you can try to reintroduce the package again. The old
packages will stay available at
http://snapshot.debian.org/package/snes9x/ and you can base your work
upon them.

Note however, that according to the removal bug, there's no upstream
development any more (so you'll have to do that, too; not sure if it's
possible as the package has been in non-free), and that there seems to
be a free alternative.

Looking over the list of release critical bugs, I stumbled over the
package offlineimap, which currently has one release critical bug open
(and therefore risks of being removed from the release,
http:/bugs.debian.org/603450 for details).

I'm just wondering, if you are still interested in maintain this
package, and if you could help prepare a fix for this bug in time. It
would be a shame, if we couldn't ship offlineimape any more :(

If I remember correctly, most (all?) of these files contain some
information about their copyright holder in a header. Regarding the
license, you might take a look at license statement of the font files in
the figlets package in non-free. While figlets itself was non-free, if
I'm not mistaken, the font files itself are licensed in a DFSG free way.

To answer your questions:

Yes, the name is too generic.
No, "it is already in Ubuntu" is no argument.
No, "it will lead to some kind of problems for Ubuntu to have it in
Debian with a different way) is also not an argument.
Yes, we have and will reject packages because of too generic names
(several gnustep package come to my mind).

Hi!

Sorry, but I no longer intend to adopt this package. Generally speaking
with a inactive upstream and very few active users (according to popcon
there is a respectable number of installations, but seldom usage) it
might be better to remove the package altogether.

Bug#543877: O: dahb-html -- Debian GNU/Linux Anwenderhandbuch

2009-08-27 Thread Alexander Reichle-Schmehl
Hi Frank!

It seems the package of your book has been orphaned meaning it is
unmaintained in Debian. Are you interessted in maintaining it yourself?
I would be willing to sponsor your uploads.

Don't worry, if it might be removed or get outdated by beeing
unmaintained; if you don't want to maintain it yourself, I'll take care
of it :)

Best regards,
  Alexander

PS: Didn't there used to be a pdf-Version of your book, too?

Maybe I miss something, but what's the intended (legal) purpouse of this

It seems to me, that the project is upstream dead and has a realy low

Beside that you left out pretty much information, you'll need a new name

Hi Guido!

You don't need to join Debian. Just create a new package and ask on the
Debian mentors list (http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors) for a
sponsor, who will take a look at your package and upload it to the
Debian archive for you. (You are still responsible for the package, get
bug reports, etc. The sponsor will just act as your "proxy" to our
archive.)
