I'll report back.

Except u-boot (which was coming from buildroot), I already succeeded
once in installing Debian on my neo2. It's quite unstable and doesn't
uptime more than 48h. I'm reinstalling because of seriously breakage
of the rootfs as result of all these oopses.

I'd like to prepare a patch for that script, it complains it cannot use
a GPT but it's wrong if the GPT is configured for having max 4 partitions
(as my hand-made Debian installation had). see

Bug#574137: O: curl -- Get a file from an HTTP, HTTPS or FTP server

2010-03-16 Thread Domenico Andreoli
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

It was my first package, it has always been the most advanced and well
cared one of mine. I brought it from childhood and it is now a widely
used and respected tool. For long time Debian packages have been the
best, most updated and cared among the huge amount of distributions it
is available for. I had great fun and learned a lot while maintaining it.

But time passes and my interest on curl is getting lower and lower. It
is after a long reflection that I decided it is time to bring it to
someone more careful than me.

I don't think curl needs any presentation. It is a straightforward
package, in the sense it is the usual binary/library/-dev/-dbg package,
but it is a very popular one and users may have contraddictory needs
(see OpenSSL vs GnuTLS). So its maintainer should be a nice leader with
a good sources insight, he/she may not be a hero but some experience
would be helpful.

Daniel, the upstream author, is a great hacker with sharp teeth and
has always crawled the BTS. So, unless you are irresponsabile like me,
you should have great time with him.

Happy hacking,
Domenico

The package description is:
curl is a client to get files from servers using any of the supported
protocols. The command is designed to work without user interaction
 or any kind of interactivity.
 .
curl offers a busload of useful tricks like proxy support, user
authentication, ftp upload, HTTP post, file transfer resume and more.

Indeed before doing any packaging I would have contacted him to ask

Unfortunately I have not. While I am very interested in this library,
currently I am lacking the time to work at its packaging. Declaring an
ITP for it has been premature from my side, indeed I am going to take
a pause from Debian soon.

Romain offered collaboration to the job, I hope he still can take over
the effort to package it. He has the right to (not) add me as uploader,
for the near future I am going to be rather passive. Sorry.

Bug#483710: O: libnet -- library for the construction and handling of network packets

2008-05-30 Thread Domenico Andreoli
Package: wnpp

I intend to orphan the libnet package.

Upstream development is almost stalled but actually it has never been
too fast either. There is also an old beta which I have never packaged.

The package description is:
libnet provides a portable framework for low-level network packet
 writing and handling.

libnet features portable packet creation interfaces at the IP layer
and link layer, as well as a host of supplementary functionality.

Using libnet, quick and simple packet assembly applications can be
whipped up with little effort. With a bit more time, more complex
programs can be written (Traceroute and ping were easily rewritten
 using libnet and libpcap).

2008-05-30 Thread Domenico Andreoli
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I intend to orphan the nmesis package. It is an easy package so it may
be indicated for newcomers.

Upstream site moved to http://nemesis.sourceforge.net/ and has a new
release. Current few bugs should be easily fixed.

The package description is:
The Nemesis Project is designed to be a commandline-based, portable
human IP stack for UNIX/Linux. The suite is broken down by protocol
and should allow for useful scripting of injected packet streams from
 simple shell scripts.
 .
 Key features:
  * support for ARP, DNS, ICMP, IGMP, OSPF, RIP, TCP, UDP protocols
  * layer 2 or layer 3 injection

Tools that use the DWARF debugging information inserted in ELF binaries
by compilers such as GCC, used by well known debuggers such as GDB,
and more recent ones such as systemtap.

Utilities in the dwarves suite include:

 - pahole: finds alignment holes in structs and classes in languages
such as C/C++, CPU cacheline alignment. Helps repack those structures
   to achieve more cache hits.
 - codiff: a diff like tool to compare the effects changes in source
code generate on the resulting binaries
 - pfunct: that can be used to find all sorts of information about

Bug#208759: adoption of the gshield debian package

2003-10-28 Thread Domenico Andreoli
Dear Casper and Alexander,

i received from both of you a request to adopt gshield and both of you
asked why i orphaned it. so i'm writing a common answer :)

i orphaned it because i don't use it anymore, because i find it not
very flexible, because upstream seems dead and finally because i don't
think it is that great piece of code to be included in debian.

gshield is not in debian archive so it can't be technically adopted
anymore, it needs to be inserted from scratch. a ITP needs to be issued
in order to show who is working on it.

i suggest you to see log of bug #208759 (which i'm CCing) to read more
about gshield removal and, given this story, probably ftpmaster will
need to be convinced before gshield can reenter debian. but here i
could be really wrong.

please think twice before packaging gshield again. not that gshield is
a bad tool, indeed it is pretty nice for a personal use, but it is not
that good either. i advice to all the gshield users to try firehol,
a much more powerful and easy to use tool.

in case i was not able to dissuade you, i suggest to start from the last
version found in archives (http://snapshot.debian.net), it includes
modifications requested by some debian users and that were not merged
by upstream (mostly because he never meade a new release in long time).

I orphaned the libcomprex package, it is in bad shape and completely
unbuildable (see bug #162438). I'm not able to change the maintainer
field and to upload a new version.

debian directory is actually maintained in upstream CVS repository,
so who intends to adopt libcomprex can ask him if a new CVS access is
available.

The package description is:
The libcomprex library transparently handles automatic compression and
decompression of files. The API is similar to C's built-in file access
functions, which provides a smooth transition to libcomprex. libcomprex
can also open uncompressed files, making it a good replacement for the
 native file access functions.
 .
Contains the symlinks, headers, and object files needed to compile
and link programs which use the libcomprex library.
 .

Bug#170291: O: leakbug -- GNUpdate leakbug tracer library

2002-11-22 Thread Domenico Andreoli
Package: wnpp
Version: unavailable; reported 2002-11-22
Severity: normal

I orphaned the leakbug package, it should be in pretty good shape.

debian directory is actually maintained in upstream CVS repository,
so who intends to adopt leakbug can ask him if a new CVS access is
available.

The package description is:
Leakbug is a memory leak tracer that specializes in detecting leaks
from the program's own calls to malloc(), strdup(), etc. It does not
 detect leaks from outside libraries.
 .
Contains the symlinks, headers, and object files needed to compile
and link programs which use the libleakbug library.
 .
More informations can be found at the GNUpdate website

It seems to be a very nice address book. Debian does not offer a big

and feel. And I need one of these (nice) tools.

Data files are saved in XML, so conversion *is* possible to other

Genst can generate trees for applications, libraries, or both. It handles
the generation of basic RPM spec files (which of course must be editted
manually later) and soon debian/ directories.

Genst is an alpha application. However, it has been used to generate the
trees for every component in the GNUpdate project. An earlier version of
genst was even used to develop genst's own source code tree.

The libcomprex library transparently handles automatic compression and
decompression of files. The API is similar to C's built-in file access
functions, which provides a smooth transition to libcomprex. libcomprex
can also open uncompressed files, making it a good replacement for the
native file access functions.

2001-05-17 Thread Domenico Andreoli
Package: wnpp
Severity: whishlist

Url: http://www.gnupdate.org

The gnups program is the GNUpdate Package Server. It provides a way for
programs equipped with
libpackman to query remote package databases.

gnups can be installed as an actual server, or as a CGI script. A configuration
file on the user's
machine will inform libpackman as to which type it is on the specified server.

Bug#97800: ITP: leakbug -- Memory leak tracing library

2001-05-17 Thread Domenico Andreoli
Package: wnpp
Severity: whishlist

Url: http://www.gnupdate.org
License: LGPL 2.1

The leakbug library is a small, simple library intended to show where memory
leaks are occuring
within a program.

Leakbug does not report leaks due to incorrect use of another library (i.e., a
function in a library
allocates memory, and you never freed it). It acts this way for a reason. When
I wrote leakbug, I
wanted to make sure that my libraries and programs were not leaking memory.
That is where leakbug
comes in handy.

For the record, I use dmalloc to test for leaks as well. It is a great library
and I highly recommend
using it for all programs.

2001-05-17 Thread Domenico Andreoli
Package: wnpp
Severity: whishlist

Url: http://www.gnupdate.org

The libpql (Package Query Language) library provides a mechanism for querying
online package
databases running gnups.

Programs that use this library can determine if there are newer versions of
themselves and optionally
auto-upgrade themselves, requiring that the user do very little to stay
up-to-date.

The libpackman (Package Management) library provides a single API for opening

Libpackman's module support allows for other developers to quickly provide
support for new package

Bug#97797: ITP: libgnurdf -- GNUpdate RDF library

2001-05-17 Thread Domenico Andreoli
Package: wnpp
Severity: whishlist

Url: http://www.gnupdate.org
License: LGPL 2.1

The libgnurdf (GNUpdate RDF) library provides quick and easy access to RDF (XML
Resource
Description Format) files.

Libgnurdf makes it easy to create, modify, and search RDF files from any C/C++
(and soon Perl and
Python) programs. GNUpdate uses this to access its database and to generate
queries for online
package databases running gnups.

Libgnurdf works with both libxml1 (tested with libxml v1.8.10 and up) and
libxml2 (tested with libxml
2.3.8). The necessary version is detected during configure.

Re: administrativa, call for help

2001-04-09 Thread Domenico Andreoli
i made a script too! :)) in these days i tested it, all of you saw how
many bug retitle i issued, don't you? most of all those messages were
computer generated.

it is here http://people.debian.org/~cavok/wnpputil

i'm starting to think a couple of things:
1) some sort of tool(s) are required to help wnpp maintainers, requests start
to be many and the work is very error prone
2) i suggest to modify bts so that if a retitle happens in for a wnpp bug
and the new title is in the form of {ITA|ITP|WHATEVER} it writes not
only "retitled ..." in the report of the bug but also "adopted,
   orphaned and the like".

the mess i made (and solved) last week is due to me reading a little too
quickly the bug reports, without digging in all the various and numerous
retitling, reassignament etc etc. it is a fault of mine, i admit it is,
but maybe ireports could be a little more "user-friendly" :))

of course if i'm correcting the title in behalf of someother (ie. the
original ITP or RFA or whatever submitter) i should not figure as the
original issuer...

just few ideas i'm having

cheers
