It offers a dynamic combination of efficient caching and on-the-fly rendering. Because of its dynamic rendering, only a small portion of the total tiles need to be stored on disk, reducing the resources required. At the same time, its caching strategy enables high-performance serving and can support several thousand requests per second. libapache2-mod-tile was originally written to serve the tiles of the main layer in OSM carto style, but has since been used on a variety of different services that provide maps on OpenStreetMap data.
