Bug#688077: O: elvis -- a vi-like editor lighter than vim

2012-09-18 Thread Kapil Hari Paranjape
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Hello,

As reported earlier (#432298), this package needs work to bring to the
modern era!

At one stage a 1.88M editor (rough size of plain old vim these days)
would have been considered 'heavy', but not anymore. Is there a niche
for editors that weight-in at < 400K and have many of the same features?

Since this is the first package (back in the Minix days in 1991/92) to
which I sent a bug report and patch, I do this with heavy heart but ...
I have been using vim for the last six months, so someone with greater
need must take over and make sure that 'elvis still lives'! (Note that
elvis only lives inside Debian as of now.)

Regards,

Kapil.

Bug#536320: adoption conky package

The RC bug was withdrawn. However, conky version 1.7.2 has now been
released. Please try to package it.

If you have no time to work on the package, I will re-title the bug to
RFA and do the basic packaging of 1.7.2 just to keep conky going in
Debian.

Following this Ryan Niebur set the owner to "no-owner" but Nikolas
has not set the owner to himself!

Hence, at this point no one owns this RFA/ITA and I'm setting it back
to RFA since it seems to be bad if the report is itself orphaned! :-)

By the way, Cesare Tirabassi is maintaining the

Bug#536320: RFA: conky -- highly configurable system monitor for X based on torsmo

2009-07-08 Thread Kapil Hari Paranjape
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request an adopter for the conky package.

 - I no longer use conky.
 - the newer conky uses Lua for extensions (currently disabled
in the Debian package). I don't know Lua.
 - the package should probably be split into
conky-nox, conky-lua and conky-std (or some such)

Otherwise, conky is a nice package with a responsive and active
upstream and user community. If someone uses it and wishes to start
maintaining packages for Debian, I cannot easily find a better place
to start!

The package description is:
Conky is a system monitor for X originally based on the torsmo code.
Since its original conception, Conky has changed a fair bit from its
predecessor. Conky can display just about anything, either on your
root desktop or in its own window. Conky has many built-in objects,
as well as the ability to execute programs and scripts, then display
 the output from stdout.

The RFA was ITP'ed by the upstream maintainer

Dominik Bruhn ITP'ed on 6th June 2009.

Could you please resolve this matter between the two of you

There are two possibilities:
 a. Co-maintainer-ship
 b. The person who will give up the ITP should send an appropriate

I did not receive a response and I notice that the package is
already out of testing due to a "grave" bug.

This is the only PS editor in Debian that can annotate PS files
and is light on library dependencies. More importantly I use it
to fill in downloaded crosswords, sudokus and other puzzles!

So I'm taking over.

Bug#430129: dvi2tty being orphaned again :-(

2007-08-29 Thread Kapil Hari Paranjape
retitle 430129 O: dvi2tty -- Previewing dvi-files on text-only devices

This is a program that I have used and loved since its early days so
it is unfortunate that I have to abandon it :-(

On Sat, 18 Aug 2007, Kapil Hari Paranjape wrote:
> Since Paul Wise has helped to clarify the copyright issue the package
> can continue in Debian. So I'm adopting it.

Further investigation has led me to conclude that the issue is murkier
than I thought. See additional remarks sent to #424018 for details.

As far as I can see the following options are available for users of
this package:

- sort out the copyright issues and maintain the Debian
package. To possibly aid this I have attached all the changes
that I made as a Debian diff.gz file. The patches to the
source have been classified and separated.

- re-write the programs from scratch. However, you may want
to help with the "catdvi" effort. See below.

- use the following more complex solutions. Note that *all*
these solutions depend on the use of additional font-related
files. dvi2tty has the feature (occasionally a bug!) that it
works with DVI files without *any* additional font information.

catdvi: this seems to be under development. In spite of
playing with the options I could not get output quite as
  good as dvi2tty.

dvips/dvipdf followed by ps2ascii/pdftotext: This produces
reasonable output on the files I tried.

If you have the TeX source then you have more options:

untex: this is barebones.

hevea/htlatex followed by w3m/lynx -dump:
this produces the best results.

Kapil.

Bug#432298: RFH: elvis

2007-07-09 Thread Kapil Hari Paranjape
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Hello,

The editor "elvis" is a vi clone that has almost (see below) all
features that one would nowadays demand of a vi-like editor. It is
also significantly "lighter" than the popular "vim" editor.

-rwxr-xr-x root root 451796 2006-10-11 08:13 /usr/bin/elvis
-rwxr-xr-x root root 990256 2007-01-31 23:54 /usr/bin/vim.tiny
-rwxr-xr-x root root 1383816 2007-01-31 23:55 /usr/bin/vim.basic

Note that elvis has syntax highlighting and other features which have
been left out of vim.tiny in order to make the latter "lighter" so
this "measurement" does not present all of elvis' advantages over
vim.

However:
* the editor has been abandoned upstream since about March 2004.
* the package currently has only an incomplete implementation
of support for multi-byte characters; (see #392727).
* supporting UTF-8 is a good release goal for lenny. If I am not
able to solve #392727 I will consider asking for the removal of
  "elvis" from lenny.

Hence, this request for help from anyone who has converted a text
manipulation programme (editor!) from pre-UTF-8 single-byte systems to
wide characters.

Regards,

Kapil.

Are you still interested in adopting "dvipng"? If not I would be
happy to adopt it instead and look for a sponsor.

The reason for my impatience is:

I would be really happy if the newer version of "dvipng" makes it
into "etch". This is because a package of mine "tex4ht" makes use of
"dvipng" and the newer version produces PNG's with real transparency.

Hello,

I am willing to be a co-maintainer for the "tsocks" package.

You may have seen the fix for the #134729 and #278906 that I have
proposed.

In addition, I believe #373642 can be fixed by documentation (or
perhaps a sample tsocks.conf file) rather than patching the source
in the manner suggested.

I also believe that you have already fixed #295568 which can be
marked as done.

I am not a DD so I cannot help with the upload but perhaps you have
other ways.

Please suggest ways in which can manage co-maintenance if this is
agreeable with you. I have an account with collab-maint.

Bug#386269: RFH: tex4ht -- LaTeX and TeX for Hypertext

2006-09-06 Thread Kapil Hari Paranjape
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request assistance with maintaining the tex4ht and tex4ht-common
packages (which are generated out of the same source package).

The package description is:
TeX4ht is a highly configurable TeX-based authoring system for producing
hypertext. It interacts with TeX-based applications through style files and
postprocessors, leaving the processing of the source files to the native TeX
compiler. Consequently, TeX4ht can handle the features of TeX-based systems
in general, and of LaTeX in particular.
 .
TeX4ht can be used both for authoring HTML using TeX/LaTeX input files, or
for converting existing TeX input files (in any format) into HTML, with
(usually) only minor modifications. Other varieties of hypertext can also be
produced, including XML, XHTML, MathML and the Openoffice.org format of XML.
 .
There are a number of different ways to convert glyphs and graphics
in the DVI files into PNG, GIF or JPEG. The default is to use dvipng.
Alternatives using ghostscript, imagemagick, netpbm and/or pstoedit are
 also possible.
 .
 Homepage: http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/~gurari/TeX4ht/

Expertise required from co-maintainer:

Familiarity with TeX4ht :)
Familiarity with Java.
Familiarity with openoffice use in conjunction with TeX4ht.

Explanation of assistance required:

I am currently comfortable with the TeX aspects of the package as well
as most aspects of image conversion. However, I have no familiarity
with Java. A number of Java based features in connection with
speech output are being added upstream.

Another problem is that I primarily use the package for conversion to
HTML, XHTML, XML whereas a number of users for the openoffice output
have emerged and I am unable to understand/deal with the bugs that
they report.

Manner of co-operation:

I would be comfortable with co-maintaining with e-mail for
discussions. At a pinch I could learn to use one of the SCM-based
tools as well.

Regards,

Kapil.

  2. There are no major unfixable bugs as far as I can

  3. Vim is getting larger by the minute. "vim-tiny" is
