Bug#531079: RFS: ecm -- prepares CD image files so they compress better

2009-06-23 Thread Loïc Martin

Joachim Reichel wrote:

Loic: I'm happy to sponsor this upload if you can get the data loss bug
fixed. There might be some small changes to the packaging needed, but
I'm confident that these can be easily sorted out.

I haven't been able to reproduce this bug once. I tried with raw images
smaller than 2GB (1.9GB), between 2 and 4GB, and over 4GB. On raw images
smaller than 2GB, everything work fine. On images bigger than 2GB, ecm
aborts cleanly with the following error message:

  Encoding foo.iso to foo.iso.ecm.
foo.iso: Value too large for defined data type

It doesn't even start creating the .ecm file. Also, in the event you had
a crash and the .ecm file didn't finish (it can take a while), the
original .iso is never modified - the .ecm file is created as a separate
file, so I also don't know where the original data was lost.

I've been using ecm on i386 and amd64 without any data loss for a few
years now. Although the program should also work on other arch, are you
using something different?

Bug#533666: RFP: gens -- Sega Genesis / Sega CD / Sega 32X emulator

2009-06-19 Thread Loïc Martin
As a side note, I've been in touch with gens/gs[0] developer, David
Korth (pseudo: GerbilSoft), since I was planning to package it in Debian
Games Team. Everything being on hold because of the Starscream
situation. Last message from Dave one week ago was that he would see
with Neill Corlett and ask him about the licensing issue (after I raised
the idea, since Neil has been and is still releasing programs under the
GPL). I wasn't able to get in touch with Neil for another matter, so I
can't be sure how it will work out.

Except for that code, and unlike the original gens, gens/gs doesn't seem
to ship the Microsoft copyrighted code, nor any kaillera code (David
Korth is planning to add network play in later versions). All new code
is GPL-2+ (bear in mind that was not an exhaustive review since I wasn't
sure how the Starscream licensing would be resolved).

There's still other issues - some C64 code is Copyright Commodore for
example. Some is ported from other Gens forks, and that should be ok
since they would have inherited the GPL, even when the headers are
missing. But some files without headers might prove a bit harder to track.

Gens/GSs might be an easier target for license issues considering it's
quite active upstream. AFAIR, the fork was due to not having access to
gens CVS, and Dave Korth was planning to open a CVS for Gens/GS. Don't
know if Debian can provide one though ;)

[0] To summarize the project, from David Korth:

I've been working on a fork of Gens for the past few months. The main

The improvements on the Linux side are really interesting, and bring it
up-to-par with other megadrive emulators on proprietary OS.

Bug#531450: ITP: gmameui -- front-end for the arcade games emulator MAME

2009-06-03 Thread Loïc Martin

Paul Wise wrote:

I note the GPLv2+ is probably not compatible with the MAME non-free

likely to form a derivative work? If so we cannot distribute gmameui.

Yes, the MAME license restricts commercial use, and is thus non
gpl-compatible.

As we've just talked on IRC, gmameui runs mame in a separate process.
Thanks for your help!

How is that compatible with the rest of the code? Clearly the whole library
would not be GPL2+ if there are additional restrictions.

See http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#SoftwareLicenses,

I'd like why it would make the whole library not GPL2+ - not that Debian
will ship the binaries of course, but I guess a lot of projects and
manufacturers might need to know that.

GMAMEUI is a front-end program that helps you run MAME, the Multiple

GMAMEUI is a fork of the defunct GXMame project, with a number of

This package should go in contrib because he depends on non-free
packages (mame-*).

Christian

Right, since it depends on MAME (SDLMAME, XMAME - AFAIK only XMAME is in
Debian atm), whose license is restrictive, I had put it in Section:
non-free/games (debian/control). Was that the right thing (I must say I
still have trouble with some Debian terms) or is there something else to do?

Oh, and there's some licensing issues to check on some source files with
upstream, so it will takea few weeks before it's uploaded to
mentors.debian.net anyway.

The ECM format allows you to reduce the size of a typical CD image
file (BIN, CDI, NRG, CCD, or any other format that uses raw sectors).
It works by eliminating the Error Correction/Detection Codes
(ECC/EDC) from each sector whenever possible. The encoder
automatically adjusts to different sector types and automatically
   skips any headers it encounters.
Since the data skipped is nearly impossible to compress with
traditionnal tools, the resulting ECM file will compress far better
   than the raw CD image
