Orphaning due to lack of time.
I did consider requesting the removal instead, since the themes in this package
were never particularly good. However, popcon does show that a few people have
this installed, so just orphaning it for now.

Bug#276892: RFA: galeon -- GNOME web browser for advanced users

2004-10-17 Thread Mark Howard
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request an adopter for the galeon package.

I've started a new job and unfortunately don't have time to maintain galeon any
more.

The package description is:
A standards compliant web browser, which integrates well with the GNOME desktop
environment. It does not include an email client, irc bot, website designer
etc., therefore has a moderate resource usage. Internally the program uses
Mozilla's Gecko rendering engine to display the web pages so is fully feature
complete and standards compliant, as well as rendering pages quickly.

Does that mean that it can do something as a standalone program? Or is
it just a library? If it's just a library, it might be clearer to omit
this comment.

I was seriously considering a full ITA.
Having the report shows people interested in helping that I'm wanting

Bug#199492: RFA: galeon -- GNOME web browser for advanced users

2003-07-01 Thread Mark Howard
Package: wnpp
Version: unavailable; reported 2003-07-01
Severity: normal

Hi,
This is not quite an RFA, more a request for co-maintainers. Galeon is
a lot of work; lately I've not been giving it the time it deserves. I do
want to continue maintaining galeon, but need more help. The current
co-maintainers have been very good, but are now more interested in other
projects.

The package really needs the help of a crazy patch writer. Many of the
issues should be trivial to fix (although there are also some larger features to
deal with). If you're not interested in the reponsibility of being a
co-maintainer, simply having more people going through the galeon bug
reports and supplying the occasional patch would be great.

The package description is:
A Mozilla based web brower integrated with the GNOME desktop environment.
Galeon is different from other browsers in that it has many powerful features,
integrates well with gnome, and is smaller than Mozilla. Unlike many browsers,
Galeon's features are entirely related to web browsing - it does not include an
email client, irc bot or website designer. Galeon's motto is "The web, only the
 web".
 .
Galeon's use of Mozilla's Gecko rendering engine makes it fully feature
complete and standards compliant, as well as being very fast at rendering web
 pages.
 .
By using the GNOME and GTK libraries for the user interface, Galeon is
usually faster than mozilla and the interface integrates well with the
 GNOME2 Desktop Environment.
 .
This is a development snapshot, but is considered stable by many.

Bug#194039: ITP: mozilla-bonobo -- GNOME Bonobo browser plugin

Hi,
Many people won't know what bonobo is or what uses bonobo (and
shouldn't have to know), so it would probably be a good idea to list
some of the applications in the package description. e.g. this plugin
will allow you to view any files which can be opened in many gnome
programs such as abiword, eog, ggv, gcrystal, gchempaint, gpdf,
gnumeric... These should probably also listed as suggestions for the
package.

Hi,
I'm finally getting around to updating the gjdoc package. There are
many changes to be made, including a number of patches to make it build.
Unfortunately, there seem to be problems with the xml processing.

After looking into the package in more detail, i've noticed
I don't think the copyright file is adequate. You should copy both the
LICENSE and COPYRIGHT.html files into there as a minimum

I still can't get gjdoc to work. Unfortunately upstream report that
there are problems when using it with saxon, which I think is what
libgnujaxp uses (although I'm not sure - I really don't know much about
how these things work)

Upstream suggest that I use gnu libxmlJ, which is available in
classpathx cvs. Would you be interested in packaging this also?

Have you had any luck finding sponsors for your packages?
Unfortunately I'm about to start exam term at uni so really don't have
any spare time.

The changelog on the website shows that nothing has been done since June
last year. If this is a development version which isn't being worked on,
I don't think it should go in Debian.
Hopefully it's just the changelog on the website that hasn't been

Bug#174494: debbuggtk

2003-01-04 Thread Mark Howard
Hi,
I'm in the process of uploading packages and sources for
libdebbug-java and debbuggtk to http://www.tildemh.com/tmp/debbuggtk

I'd love to hear any suggestions you have.
I'm just emailing the itp and people who showed interest at the moment;
don't want to add too much junk to the mailing lists (especially if it
turns out that there's a big bug in it, but there shouldn't be). If you
want me to let you know of new versions in the future, please ask and
I'll try to remember. I don't want to upload official packages until the
quality is much better.

Note that they require the latest java-gnome libraries (20030103),
currently in incoming. Provided programs:

bugviewer
- this will download and display a bug report.
buglister
- this downloads and displays a package listing. Clicking on an item
will open it in bugviewer
bugwatcher
- this is my main application. In the top left, there is a list of
'watched' items. This can be added to using the buttons underneath it.
When one is clicked, that packages listing is loaded in the right. This
can be updated by clicking the refresh button (it will also be done on
program start, but this is currently commented out). The filter box for
the listings is a complete spoof at the moment - sorry. When you click
on an item in the listing, the full report should be loaded at the
bottom. There are problems with parsing a number of bug reports - I
probably won't fix these as I'd prefer to spend time thinking about an
xml machine readable interface to the bts. There is another refresh
button for the bug report. The edit button just gives a mock up page at
the moment.

Issues:
- only works with kaffe. Java-GNOME does work for other people with
other jre's (such as sablevm, gij, blackdown java), but I've had no
success. Also, natively compiled code does not seem to work either.
- kaffe is slow. It's a fact that kaffe's JNI code is slow. Hopefully
this will be fixed with newer gij, or possibly natively compiled code.
- text entry and viewing is incredibly slow. I have no idea why. Most
probably due to the Java problems
- no GNOME support. This means we cannot have gconf, menus, toolbars or
statusbars.

Big TODO items:
- Status: Highlight bugs which are new of have had comments added to
them. Show a count in the watched list. Possibly highlight all bugs
where the user has commented on them.
- ListingReport filters. a quick and easy way to search bug reports.
Also having more advanced things such as limiting by tags, severity,
owner...
- ListingReport: option of more columns (checkboxes for each tag for
example). Simple menu for switching each on/off. (This may not be
necessary if the filters are as useful as I hope)
- bugviewer: possibly use html to display the items. Maybe on one page.
Not really sure about this yet.
- Colin Watson has added a Last-Modified: header to bugreport.cgi which
works on HTTP HEAD requests. I can't manage to read this at present.
when I do, bug reports should only be downloaded when needed.
- more intelligent removal of items from cache (e.g. bugs which have
been closed)
- pseudo package support
- bug edit: load current values & generate an email for output. I don't
like the ui at present - comments appreciated.

- converting to work with the new debbug rewrite. I think this mainly
involves working on a machine readable cgi for the server and a parser
for this. Should probably look into it more though.

I hope you manage to get this to work. Please let me know if you have
any problems. As I've said already, we're using kaffe at the moment
which does make it very slow - this will be fixed in the future. Other
Java-GNOME developers have reported performance at almost the same as
standard gtk, when using other jres.

Bug#174494: ITP: debbug-gtk -- GTK applications for managing Debian bugs

2002-12-28 Thread Mark Howard
Hi,
Thanks to everyone for the off-list support.
The screenshot url was wrong. It should of course have been:
http://tildemh.com/tmp/debbuggtk/20021227.png.

A lot of my efforts have been enhancing the Java-Gnome bindings (I am a
member of the upstream development team). There have particularly been
problems with free jre's not functioning properly (or at least not in
the generally expected manner); and also Blackdown java (as used by the
rest of the java-gnome team) not working in Debian at the moment. The
bugwatcher application does function, however there are a number of
issues with text entries which make them run incredibly slowly with
kaffe (Apparently Blackdown 1.4.1 works fine; other free jvms don't work
at all, mostly due to jni problems)

I have been trying to make the code reusable as far as possible. In
particular, the bug listing widget and bug report widget may be used
wherever wanted - this is demonstrated by the separate buglister and
bugviewer apps. Hopefully in the future it will be possible to use these
in other places, possibly a graphical bug reporting tool.

In terms of the code and bts interaction, all it does at the moment is
download the web pages with bug reports in them and then parses them (in
a very crude manner). My aims were to get something which works with the
current system before looking into changes in the bts. Being able to
change bug reports is quite far down on the list of todo items at the
moment - I want a stable bugwatcher tool first.
I have not contacted doogie regarding his work at rewriting debbugs, but
I'll probably look into it now.

I won't post tarballs or packages up at the moment - they depend on
newer java-gnome libraries than what is currently available in the
repository. java-gnome builds currently fail part way through due to
problems in the libgnome-java section (it is still all under
development), so I can't upload updated packages. I will do so in a few
days, by which time java-gnome should be buildable and I will have also
done more work on bugwatcher.

Thanks for the support.

* URL : http://epiphany.mozdev.org/
* License : GPL
Description : GNOME web browser with simple interface

Epiphany means "An intuitive grasp of reality through something (as an
event) usually simple and striking"

Epiphany is a simple yet powerful GNOME web browser targetted at
non-technical users. It's principles are simplicity and standards
compliance. Simplicity is achieved by a well designed user interface and
reliance on external applications for performing external tasks (such as
reading email). Simplicity should not mean less powerful. Standards
compliance is achieved on the html side by using the Gecko
rendering engine, as developed for the Mozilla browser; and on the user
interface side by closely following the GNOME Human Interface Guidelines
(HIG) and by close integration with the GNOME desktop. Preferences will
be designed following the new GNOME policy.

[Notes:
- epiphany package name already taken, so using epiphany-browser.
- epiphany is being developed by Marco Pesenti Gritti, the man who made
galeon so successful. Recently, he tried to enforce HIG on galeon, by
taking such actions as simplifying the menus and moving mime handling
entirely to gnome. Many people were reluctant to change (many others
agreed completely with him) and so there was some flamage which
resulted in zero progress and Marco's decision to resign as lead
maintainer. Galeon will now be re-introducing some of those old
preferences, probably including the return of the 'tools' menu.

Bug#158059: ITP: metacity-themes -- Themes for the Gtk2 metacity window manager

* Package name: metacity-themes
Description : Themes for the Gtk2 metacity window manager

This collection of themes for the metacity window manager has been carefully
compiled from a number of sources. Each one is publically available under a
license which complies with the Debian free software guidelines, most commonly
the GPL license. The themes have been individually checked to ensure that they
are all of high quality: they have a consistent design; include high quality
graphics; and handle all types of window.

The themes have primarily been gathered from http://themes.freshmeat.net and
http://sunshineinabag.co.uk. I would like to hear suggestion for other high
quality themes to be included, however please be sure to read the
/usr/share/doc/metacity-themes/README.Debian file first, as it documents
reasons why a
number of themes were not included.

Initial packages for this are available at

The package currently only includes three groups of themes - partially
due to the recent changes in the way themes are done in metacity.

I am not yet a Debian developer; I am at the 'waiting for an AM' stage
of the NM process. So, if anyone's listening who has an interest in themes
or metacity, please volunteer to sponsor this package.

Bug#149969: ITP version 0.8

2002-08-24 Thread Mark Howard
hi,
I'm currently working on the Java-GNOME project. We are busy preparing
version 0.8, which will be the first version supporting gnome/gtk2. This
is a complete rewrite of the bindings, and a slight change of philosophy
- the aim is to produce a java framework for creating gtk/gnome
applications; rather than simply copy the methods to java, we intend to
create a framework which is easier to use and follows the Java style.

As already pointed out, this will be the only truly free gui system for
java. It runs perfectly with gcj and can even be used to create native
code.

I am not yet a Debian developer, but am in the NM queue. Once Java-Gnome
version 0.8 is released, I will start work on Debian packages for it. I
do not think there is any benefit in creating packages for java-gnome
0.7.1

I have so far only used sawfish, but have just discovered the
keybindings settings in metacity. This will probably make me switch.

I will file an ITP after I've done more investigating, unless I decide
otherwise.

Bug#155922: ITP: GINF -- GINF is a Web-site creation software for the Linux platform, in the lines of Netscape Composer and Microsoft FrontPage.

I don't like the description.
1) too long
2) No need to repeat the name of the program
3) 'Linux Platform' - surely 'Debian Platform' is better, then you won't
have to change it for the other kernels :)
Seriously though, people will see this description in places such as
aptitude and debian related web pages - the 'Linux Platform' phrase is
really not needed.
4) Netscape Composer and Microsoft FrontPage
What are these? To find out what your program is, I have to look at what
other programs are?
Generic terms would be better, e.g. WYSIWYG
You could then expand on this in the longer description. If you insist
on mentioning other software (quanta+, vim,...), then please highlight
the differences between those and the GINF system.

My proposal:
Package name: GINF
Description: A GTK+ WYSIWYG website creation program

Long Description:
A 'What you see is what you get' (WYSIWYG) html editor designed for
users who don't know any html code. The Gtk+ interface allows users to
create pages by typing text, clicking buttons and exploring menus.

Bug#96909: pacwars2 packaging

2002-08-02 Thread Mark Howard
I've been looking into the packaging of Pacwars2.
There are a number of problems which need to be resolved before it can
be entered into the Debian archive.

The most critical of these seem to be the licensing of the seer
scripting library being too vague, and hence probably not dfsg
compliant.
I sent an email regarding this to the seer author on 07 July 2002. He
then replied on the 23 July, stating that he will update the licensing
soon and also that he will take a look at updating seer in general in
November of this year.

When I receive a reply from the seer author, I will take another look at
Pacwars2 and try to resolve some of the other issues (There are a number
of license related issues to look into; and there may be an issue with
pacwars2 not working with the latest version of the paragui library,
which is currently in sid).

I will file an ITP for pacwars2 when I am certain that these problems
can be resolved.

Bug#96909: pacwars2

2002-07-01 Thread Mark Howard
hi,
I'm interested in the pacwars2 packaging. I've been looking at the site
and it looks like they've gone for the full GPL license, so that
shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not yet a debian developer, in fact this will be my first package,
however I am interested in becoming one and have been following the
devel and mentors mailing lists for some time.

Filip: can you please send me any files you started work with,
particularly the paragui package. Also, please let me know your current
status with paragui - last year you said you wanted to maintain
packaging these.

Perhaps this RFP should be closed...

Bug#149969: RFP: java-gnome -- Java bindings for the GNOME and GTK libraries

2002-06-14 Thread Mark Howard
Package: wnpp
Version: N/A; reported 2002-06-13
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: java-gnome
  Version : 0.7.1
  Upstream Author : Java-Gnome Developers <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://java-gnome.sourceforge.net/
* License : LGPL
Description : Java bindings for the GNOME and GTK libraries

Java-GNOME is a set of Java bindings for the GNOME and GTK libraries that
allow GNOME and GTK applications to be written in Java. The project consists
of two libraries; java-gtk, a GTK-only binding, and java-gnome, a GTK and
GNOME binding. Java-GNOME is not a Swing look-and-feel mimicking the GTK
look, it is not a GTK/GNOME rewrite in Java, and it is not a set of GTK
peers for AWT. It is a JNI layer that delegates the calls out to the native
GTK or GNOME C libraries.

Source tar.gz and src.rpm are currently available. These have the entire
source for compiling the libraries (which have many dependencies in
terms of compiling them). Additionally, the packages contain many
example java programs (these are really useful for developers who are
learning to use the java-gnome bindings); and sources for generating
documentation (Javadoc API reference and tutorial)

I would suggest that this is packaged as three separate packages:
* binary bindings
* Source bindings (including all relevant dependancies)
* Developer package, including documentation and example programs
