Bug#930557: i3-gaps RFS/ITP

2021-10-03 Thread Michael Stapelberg
Personally, I don’t want gaps to be built from src:i3-wm.
It’s enough work to maintain one version of i3.

That said, sur5r is doing all of the Debian work since I retired from
Debian,
so it’s ultimately up to him.

I will stress one more time that what we need here is not a one-time
sponsorship offer,
but a multi-year commitment for maintaining the i3-gaps package in Debian.

Bug#930557: i3-gaps RFS/ITP

2021-10-02 Thread Michael Stapelberg
I still think it’d be better to spend time on merging gaps rather than
packaging gaps,
but it seems like nobody has the skill set and/or motivation.

Is there someone who would continuously maintain i3-gaps in Debian?
I wouldn’t want that package to diverge from upstream i3 in terms of which
version is available in Debian.

I’m asking in particular because people might switch from X11+i3 to
Wayland+sway over the next few years.

Bug#930557: i3-gaps RFS/ITP

2019-06-18 Thread Michael Stapelberg
> Certainly, a merge is the superior solution and i am glad its actually
being considered, but my understanding is that code refactoring/cleaning
could take a considerable amount of time, and therefore the package should
actually be available as a temporary solution for all those who want to use
it, as it currently is everywhere else.

I don’t think having it available temporarily is a good idea. It
complicates the situation both for the package maintainers and for end
users.

Bug#930557: i3-gaps RFS/ITP

2019-06-17 Thread Michael Stapelberg
Hey,

thanks everyone for reaching out.

The interest in making i3-gaps available to more people has prompted some
discussion between Ingo (the maintainer of the i3-gaps fork, and an i3 core
maintainer) and me.

The key concern about the i3-gaps fork is code quality: the implementation
cannot easily be merged into i3 as-is. One example is that you cannot
enable gaps and display title bars at the same time. The intention behind
publishing the fork was to make the feature available to people who can
live with the lower code quality and restrictions, not to have a long-term
sustainable fork.

Ingo will outline what needs to be done to get i3-gaps into a mergable
state, so that we can eventually bring these features to all i3 users.

For the time being, our recommendation is to NOT add i3-gaps to Debian or
any other Linux distribution. Instead, if you have time and motivation,
please consider helping improve i3-gaps with the goal of a merge.

Thank you,

Bug#923034: FreeRADIUS status

2019-02-24 Thread Michael Stapelberg
The freeradius package is generally in good shape these days, I think.

There are a few users who will report bugs, and there is at least one who
is interested in having the latest upstream version available.

The work required to maintain the package is moderate — let’s say a few
hours each month.

Hope this helps,

Bug#923034: O: freeradius -- high-performance and highly configurable RADIUS server

2019-02-23 Thread Michael Stapelberg
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I am orphaning this package effective immediately. I have never personally used
FreeRADIUS, and only stepped in to help when I saw the package was in bad shape.

(I will share more details in a later post, but figured I would get this out of
the way immediately because freeradius is marked for autoremoval from testing,
so if anyone cares, now is the time to step up.)

There’s nothing you need to do. I built it on amd64, as is currently still
required when uploading to the NEW queue (I would have preferred to upload
source-only). Once it’s accepted, the buildds will build it for all

The process currently is a bit clunky. dh-make-golang hardcodes using xz
(via tar J), so either you change that in dh-make-golang’s source, or you
manually create the packaging git repository:

# save GitHub .tar.gz as irtt_0.9.0.orig.tar.gz
% mkdir irtt
% cd irtt
% git init
% gbp import-orig ../irtt_0.9.0.orig.tar.gz
% cp -r /tmp/dh-make-golang/irtt/debian .
% git commit -a -m "Initial packaging"

Sure.

It would be good to avoid copying the systemd .service file into debian/. I
think you can instead install it with a debian/rules override. See e.g.
https://sources.debian.org/src/forked-daapd/25.0-2/debian/rules/?hl=22#L22

Aside from that, the package looks very clean now.

Let me know how you’d like to proceed regarding the signatures. It’s not a
requirement to sign the releases for now, but note that after the initial
upload, we don’t have the luxury of starting with a fresh repository
anymore.

Did you apply the ~/.lintianrc I provided? Not doing so would explain the
difference. autopkgtest is helpful even if it only compiles the package in
question. Why are there no unit tests for your code? :)

They’re not important for the time being. Of course, if you could start

Be careful not to confuse the Debian concept of source packages (i.e. .dsc
files) and binary packages (i.e. .deb files) with a Debian binary package
containing binary files (e.g. a .deb with files in /usr/bin) and a Debian
binary package containing Go source code (e.g. a .deb with files in
/usr/share/gocode).

You always operate on 1 Debian source package (in your case, named irtt)
generating at least 1 Debian binary package (in your case, also named
irtt). We discussed generating 2 Debian binary packages (irtt and
golang-github-peteheist-irtt-dev).

Given the early stage of the API, I would agree that a binary-only package
is a good choice for now. Just modify debian/rules to delete the source
after installation and you should be good.

Yeah, I agree: keeping debian/ in the upstream repo is usually not the best
solution: we really like to have our packages team-maintained, i.e. hosted
on our infrastructure alongside all of our other packages, with the same
workflows, etc.

Bug#888985: [pkg-go] RFS: irtt/0.9-1 [ITP] (#888985)

2018-02-07 Thread Michael Stapelberg
Thanks for contributing this package.

The resulting binary package irtt_0.9-1_amd64.deb contains both a binary
and Go source code. This is a bit unusual: in Debian, we only package Go
source code to build other Go programs (not for developers). Hence, we
usually provide either a binary package with programs or an arch:all
package with Go source. It’s fine to have a source package which provides
both, but please separate the source from the binaries. Have a look at
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/collab-maint/codesearch.git/ for an example
of this pattern.

Further, please address the following lintian warnings:

P: irtt source: package-uses-old-debhelper-compat-version 10
P: irtt source: insecure-copyright-format-uri
http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/1.0/
I: irtt source: out-of-date-standards-version 3.9.8 (released 2016-04-06)
(current is 4.1.3)
I: irtt source: testsuite-autopkgtest-missing
W: irtt: priority-extra-is-replaced-by-priority-optional

You can run lintian like so:
% cat >> ~/.lintianrc <<'EOT'
display-info = yes
display-experimental = yes
pedantic = yes
show-overrides = no
color = auto
EOT
% lintian irtt_0.9-1_amd64.changes

Let me know once this is done and I’ll be happy to take another look.

BTW, you don’t need to upload the package to mentors. I always work with
the git repository directly.

Thanks!

Bug#879562: ITP: dex -- OpenID Connect Identity (OIDC) and OAuth 2.0 Provider with Pluggable Connectors

2017-10-22 Thread Michael Stapelberg
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Michael Stapelberg

* Package name: dex

* URL : https://github.com/coreos/dex
* License : Apache-2.0
  Programming Lang: Go
Description : OpenID Connect Identity (OIDC) and OAuth 2.0 Provider with
Pluggable Connectors

Dex is an identity service that uses OpenID Connect
(https://openid.net/connect/) to drive authentication for other apps.
 .
Dex is NOT a user-management system, but acts as a portal to
other identity providers through "connectors." This lets dex defer
authentication to LDAP servers, SAML providers, or established identity
providers like GitHub, Google, and Active Directory. Clients write
their authentication logic once to talk to dex, then dex handles the
 protocols for a given backend.

* License : CC0-1.0
  Programming Lang: Go
  Description : copy & paste-friendly golang crypto

TL;DR- Copy & paste your crypto code from here instead of Stack Overflow.
 .
This library demonstrates a suite of basic cryptography from the Go standard
library. To the extent possible, it tries to hide complexity and help you avoid
common mistakes. The recommendations were chosen as a compromise between
cryptographic qualities, the Go standard lib, and my existing use cases.
 .
Some particular design choices I've made:
 .
 1. SHA-512/256 has been chosen as the default hash for the examples. It's
faster on 64-bit machines and immune to length extension. If it doesn't work
in your case, replace instances of it with ordinary SHA-256.
 .
 2. The specific ECDSA parameters were chosen to be compatible with RFC7518[1]
while using the best implementation of ECDSA available. Go's P-256 is
constant-time (which prevents certain types of attacks) while its P-384 and
P-521 are not.
 .
 3. Key parameters are arrays rather than slices so the compiler can help you
avoid mixing up the arguments. The signing and marshaling functions use the
crypto/ecdsa key types directly for the same reason.
 .
 4. Public/private keypairs for signing are marshaled into and out of PEM
format, making them relatively portable to other crypto software you're
likely to use (openssl, cfssl, etc).
 .
 5. Key generation functions will panic if they can't read enough random bytes
to generate the key. Key generation is critical, and if crypto/rand fails at
that stage then you should stop doing cryptography on that machine
immediately.
 .
 6. The license is a CC0 public domain dedication, with the intent that you can
just copy bits of this directly into your code and never be required to
acknowledge my copyright, provide source code, or do anything else commonly
associated with open licenses.
 .
 .
 The specific recommendations are:
 .
 .
 Encryption - 256-bit AES-GCM with random 96-bit nonces
 .
Using AES-GCM (instead of AES-CBC, AES-CFB, or AES-CTR, all of which Go also
offers) provides authentication in addition to confidentiality. This means that
the content of your data is hidden and that any modification of the encrypted
data will result in a failure to decrypt. This rules out entire classes of
possible attacks. Randomized nonces remove the choices around nonce generation
and management, which are another common source of error in crypto
 implementations.
 .
The interfaces in this library allow only the use of 256-bit keys.
 .
 .
 Hashing - HMAC-SHA512/256
 .
Using hash functions directly is fraught with various perils – it's common for
developers to accidentally write code that is subject to easy collision or
length extension attacks. HMAC is a function built on top of hashes and it
doesn't have those problems. Using SHA-512/256 as the underlying hash function
means the process will be faster on 64-bit machines, but the output will be the
same length as the more familiar SHA-256.
 .
This interface encourages you to scope your hashes with an English-language
string (a "tag") that describes the purpose of the hash. Tagged hashes are a
common "security hygiene" measure to ensure that hashing the same data for
different purposes will produce different outputs.
 .
 .
Password hashing - bcrypt with work factor 14
 .
Use this to store users' passwords and check them for login (e.g. in a web
backend). While they both have "hashing" in the name, password hashing is an
entirely different situation from ordinary hashing and requires its own
specialized algorithm. bcrypt is a hash function designed for password storage.
It can be made selectively slower (based on a "work factor") to increase the
difficulty of brute-force password cracking attempts.
 .
As of 2016, a work factor of 14 should be well on the side of future-proofing
over performance. If it turns out to be too slow for your needs, you can try
using 13 or even 12. You should not go below work factor 12.
 .
 .
 Symmetric Signatures / Message Authentication - HMAC-SHA512/256
 .
When two parties share a secret key, they can use message authentication to
make sure that a piece of data hasn't been altered. You can think of it as a
"symmetric signature" - it proves both that the data is unchanged and that
someone who knows the shared secret key generated it. Anyone who does not know
the secret key can neither validate the data nor make valid alterations.
 .
This comes up most often in the context of web stuff, such as:
 .
 1. Authenticating r

Bug#255572: ITP: cc65 -- Cross development suite for 65xxx processors, necesary for nesicide env

2017-10-06 Thread Michael Stapelberg
Thanks for sharing! The Debian package builds fine. However, when
trying to use cc65 to compile a project of mine, compilation fails
with “include/general.h(4): Error: Include file `peekpoke.h' not
found”.

Using strace, I can see:

read(4, "#ifndef GENERAL_H_\n#define GENER"..., 4096) = 1790
access("include/peekpoke.h", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
access("/build/cc65-cBYPC5/cc65-2.16/include/peekpoke.h", F_OK) = -1
ENOENT (No such file or directory)
write(2, "include/general.h(4): Error: ", 29include/general.h(4): Error: ) = 29
write(2, "Include file `peekpoke.h' not fo"..., 35Include file
`peekpoke.h' not found) = 35

So it seems like the import path is incorrect — it currently points
into the temporary path in which sbuild placed the source when
building the Debian package, while it should point to
/usr/share/cc65/include.

Bug#872600: [Pkg-raspi-maintainers] Bug#872600: RFP: open-rpi-firmware -- Open source VPU side bootloader for Raspberry Pi

2017-08-18 Thread Michael Stapelberg
FWIW, I think it doesn’t make sense to package this (or upload it,
rather) until we can run a headless Raspberry Pi system with it (i.e.
once DMA, Ethernet and USB work). I don’t expect tooling to be a big
issue.

Bug#868937: ITP: golang-github-kurin-blazer -- A Golang library for Backblaze's B2.

2017-07-19 Thread Michael Stapelberg
Package: wnpp

* License : Apache-2.0
  Programming Lang: Go
  Description : Go library for Backblaze's B2

Blazer is a Golang client library for Backblaze's B2 object storage
service. It is designed for simple integration with existing applications
that may already be using S3 and Google Cloud Storage, by exporting only
 a few standard Go types.
 .
It implements and satisfies the B2 integration checklist
 (https://www.backblaze.com/b2/docs/integration_checklist.html),
automatically handling error recovery, reauthentication, and other
low-level aspects, making it suitable to upload very large files, or
 over multi-day time scales.

Bug#857282: ITP: golang-github-golang-geo -- S2 geometry library in Go

2017-03-09 Thread Michael Stapelberg
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Michael Stapelberg

* Package name: golang-github-golang-geo
  Version : 0.0~git20170112.0.f819552-1
  Upstream Author : Google Inc.
* URL : https://github.com/golang/geo
* License : Apache-2.0
  Programming Lang: Go
Description : S2 geometry library in Go

S2 is a library for manipulating geometric shapes. Unlike many geometry
libraries, S2 is primarily designed to work with spherical geometry, i.e.,
shapes drawn on a sphere rather than on a planar 2D map. (In fact, the name S2
is derived from the mathematical notation for the unit sphere.) This makes it
especially suitable for working with geographic data.
 .
 The library consists of:
 * Basic representations of angles, intervals, latitude-longitude points, unit
3D vectors, and conversions among them.
 * Various shapes over the unit sphere, such as spherical caps ("discs"),
latitude-longitude rectangles, polylines, and polygons. These are
   collectively known as "regions".
 * Support for spatial indexing of collections of geometry, and algorithms for
testing containment, finding nearby objects, finding intersections, etc.
 * A hierarchical decomposition of the sphere into regions called "cells". The
hierarchy starts with the six faces of a projected cube and recursively
subdivides them in a quadtree-like fashion.
 * The ability to approximate arbitrary regions as a collection of cells. This
is useful for building inverted indexes that allow queries over arbitrarily
shaped regions. The implementations attempt to be precise both in terms of
mathematical definitions (e.g. whether regions include their boundaries,
representations of empty and full regions) and numerical accuracy (e.g.
   avoiding cancellation error).
 .
Note that the intent of this library is to represent geometry as a
mathematical abstraction. For example, although the unit sphere is
obviously a useful approximation for the Earth's surface, functions that
are specifically related to geography are not part of the core library
(e.g. easting/northing conversions, ellipsoid approximations, geodetic
 vs. geocentric coordinates, etc).

github.com/golang/geo is a dependency of cloud.google.com/go, which is a
dependency of upspin.

Upspin is an experimental project to build a framework for naming and

  Programming Lang: Go
Description : writing and mounting user-space file systems from Go

This package allows for writing and mounting user-space file systems from Go.
It is a wrapper around bazil.org/fuse, which does the heavy lifting. It does
not make use of the bazil.org/fuse/fs sub-package, which allows for something
like an object-orientend representation of files and directories, and contains
a decent amount of canned behavior.
 .
The chief improvements and/or differences from the bazil.org packages are:
 .
  * No surprises in the form of magic/default behaviors. You must provide an
implementation for every method in the interface. Embed a
fuseutil.NotImplementedFileSystem struct to have default implementations
that return ENOSYS.
 .
  * Every method, struct, and field is thoroughly documented. This may help you
get your bearings in the world of FUSE, the Linux VFS, traditional file
system implementations, etc., all of which tend to be very poorly
documented.
 .
  * Support for arbitrary offsets in directory entries returned by ReadDir.
(The bazil.org package assumes that offsets must be counts of bytes.)
 .
The very large disadvantage over using the bazil.org packages is that many
features have not yet been exposed.

This is a dependency of gcsfuse, a fuse file system for Google Cloud Storage.

* URL : https://github.com/jacobsa/ogletest
* License : Apache-2.0
  Programming Lang: Go
Description : unit testing framework for Go

ogletest is a unit testing framework for Go with the following features:
 .
  * An extensive and extensible set of matchers for expressing expectations.
  * Automatic failure messages; no need to say
t.Errorf("Expected %v, got %v"...).
  * Clean, readable output that tells you exactly what you need to know.
  * Built-in support for mocking through the oglemock package.
  * Style and semantics similar to Google Test and Google JS Test.
 .
It integrates with Go's built-in testing package, so it works with the go test
command, and even with other types of test within your package. Unlike the
testing package which offers only basic capabilities for signalling failures,
it offers ways to express expectations and get nice failure messages
 automatically.

Package irc allows your application to speak the IRC protocol.

the protocol to easy to use Go types. It is meant as a single component in a
larger IRC library, or for basic IRC bots for which a large IRC package would
 be overkill.

An RFP bugreport means that you want someone else to package this. If
_you_ want to work on it, you should create an ITP.

In general, we welcome any contributions (and will sponsor uploads when
the package fulfills our quality criteria), as long as they are
maintained as part of pkg-go. Feel free to reach out to us at

I’m not entirely sure what you are saying, though. Do you want to have

Hi Johan,

Thanks.

A few comments:
• You’ll want to bump debian/compat to 9 since you are requiring
  debhelper >= 9 as build-dependency anyways.
• In debian/copyright, I’d recommend to license debian/ under the same
license that upstream ships with (i.e. BSD-2-clause in this
case). This is to prevent licensing issues when shipping patches in
  debian/patches
• debian/docs is empty, so just delete it?
• In debian/README.Source, if you want to make it perfect, add git
checkout to make the instructions easily reproducible.

Aside from that:
• I’m curious about debian/Dockerfile. What do you use it for? AFAICT,
it “just” builds a package automatically. Apart from the step which
fetches the current upstream source, you can already do that with
  gbp-clone and git-buildpackage, right?

Oh, it seems like that directory had the wrong permissions. I have fixed
that, so it should work in the future.

> Should we proceed with the review on mentors?
No, I’ll just use the git repository directly. I always verify that the
git repository is buildable using git-pbuilder anyway, so mentors does
not help me at all.

In the repository that you pushed, either the “pristine-tar” or the
“upstream” branch is missing.

These are the commands I expect to succeed:

gbp-clone
git+ssh://git.debian.org/git/pkg-go/packages/golang-gocapability-dev.git
cd golang-gocapability-dev
git-buildpackage --git-pbuilder

No, that’s fine. I didn’t get that message because you did not CC
debian-devel on it. The ITP (due to Debian policy) automatically CC’s
debian-devel, which is where I read it :).

Note that we already have libgit2 in Debian experimental.

Did you coordinate with the maintainer, Russel Sim?

Bug#721425: ITP: shellex -- shell-based launcher

2013-08-31 Thread Michael Stapelberg
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Axel Wagner

* Package name: shellex
  Version : 0.0
  Upstream Author : Axel Wagner
* URL : http://github.com/Merovius/shellex
* License : BSD-3-clause
  Programming Lang: Shell, Perl, C
  Description : shell-based launcher

shellex is supposed to be a dmenu-style launcher with a lot more
features and a lot simpler design. It launches a shell (currently zsh)
and shows it in a small terminal, wrapping every command with a little
bit of extra magic (redirecting stdout, stderr, disowning and closing
the shell) to get more typical launcher-behaviour.
 .
This gives you a simple launcher with tab-completion and other
 shell-features, configurable in shell.

Bug#718051: ITP: xcb-util-cursor -- utility libraries for X C Binding -- cursor

2013-07-28 Thread Michael Stapelberg
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Michael Stapelberg

* Package name: xcb-util-cursor
  Version : 0.0.99
  Upstream Author : Michael Stapelberg
* URL : http://xcb.freedesktop.org/
* License : MIT/X
  Programming Lang: C
Description : utility libraries for X C Binding -- cursor

This package contains the library files needed to run software using
libxcb-cursor, providing port of Xlib's libXcursor functions.

The xcb-util module provides a number of libraries which sit on top of libxcb,
the core X protocol library, and some of the extension libraries. These
experimental libraries provide convenience functions and interfaces which make
the raw X protocol more usable. Some of the libraries also provide client-side
code which is not strictly part of the X protocol but which have traditionally
been provided by Xlib.
