Bug#572372: O: wdm -- WINGs Display Manager - an xdm replacement with a WindowMaker look
Hello Axel and *, Am 2011-08-02 14:35:36, hacktest Du folgendes herunter: I disagree strongly. I agree wit it too. Since I use FVWM as my windowmanager there is not much choice here to keep it light. XDM has hot the functionality I need and KDM/GDM install tonns of dependencies I will never need. So,if I search in aptitude for display-manager in squeeze I get slim (does not support remote login) gdm gdm3 xdm kdm So, time to get wdm back into Debian for wheeze WDM has the unique feature that it has not all the bloaty crap and broken design that kdm, gdm and especially gdm3 have (WTF does a login manager need sound, a window manager and power management? WTF does gdm3 redirect .Xauthority to some non-standard location?), but has the advantage over xdm of letting the user to choose his session type without the need to write a .xsession file. This is not all, because gdm/kdm install very huge useless dependencies, for which I have no space in th NAND Flash exspecoialy if I work on my ARM based PanelPC or TabletPC IMHO wdm is perfectly suited for setups with managed workstations where the users are not allowed to shut down or do other harm to also remotely used workstations. 1+ Thanks, Greetings and nice Day/Evening Michelle Konzack -- # Debian GNU/Linux Consultant ## Development of Intranet and Embedded Systems with Debian GNU/Linux itsystems@tdnet Franceitsystems@tdnet Owner Michelle KonzackOwner Michelle Konzack Apt. 917 (homeoffice) Gewerbe Straße 3 50, rue de Soultz 77694 Kehl/Germany 67100 Strasbourg/France Tel: +49-177-9351947 mobil Tel: +33-6-61925193 mobil Tel: +49-176-86004575 office http://www.itsystems.tamay-dogan.net/ http://www.flexray4linux.org/ http://www.debian.tamay-dogan.net/ http://www.can4linux.org/ Jabber linux4miche...@jabber.ccc.de ICQ#328449886 Linux-User #280138 with the Linux Counter, http://counter.li.org/ signature.pgp Description: Digital signature

Re: Bug#466669: Squirrelmail plugin for GPG
Hello Thomas Goirand, Am 2011-04-04 22:31:26, hacktest Du folgendes herunter: Excuse me to say it this way, but the excuse that it's dangerous to keep a key on a server is a silly reason for not sending the package in main. There's many more reasons you would like to use this package, for example to CHECK for a signature. That doesn't require uploading or generating a key on the server, yet there's no other way but to use this package, if you use Squirrelmail. Now, I agree that a warning could be added to the package description. But it's the responsibility of an administrator to use (or not) keys on the server side. As for me, I would do so only for small low-security things, like signing my outgoing mail. Using a key for signing my outgoing mail is better than not signing at all, and myself and 5 other people are the only one using the server. How in this kind of case, is this a security threat? Why would it be considered less safe, than, let's say, browsing the web using Adobe flash player on my laptop? I fully aggree with you. The fact that upstream is dead is a much bigger concern though. Did you try to ping him once more? I have tried too, to contact him several times, because it does not more work with squirrelmail 1.5.x and it seems, upstream is realy death and require someone which can take over. Note: I use Squirrelmail in my Intranet, where I have absolutely no security concerns. Bug#203211: Software patents and Debian
Am 2006-08-16 11:04:44, schrieb Bas Wijnen: Hello, When looking for some video-editing software, I found avidemux. According to the wnpp bug, there is a problem with license issues regarding the MPEG2/MPEG4 codec. There is a software patent on this codec, and a paid license is needed in order to use it, appearantly. You can obtaine an individual licence for 5000 US$ from the patent holder. same thing for libcss2. My question is how Debian handles software patents. I thought we Debian does not handel any software patents, since you can obtaine at any moments a legal individual licence didn't care about them except if they were actively enforced, because it's completely impossible to avoid all patented software, considering the junk that gets patented. If that is the case, would any of you know if the MPEG[24] codec patents are actively enforced? In other words, can this be in Debian? Patents on decoding something can not be enforced. Patents on encoding YES! Please look at the websiote of the patent holder. All informations are availlable public. Not realy right = JPEG And they are some dozen others which are not actively enforced. If Debian kick off all packages which use patented stuff anywhere then we would have only 50% of the packages in Sid...
