Bug#948674: ITA: otter-browser -- Fast and configurable web browser inspired by Opera 12
Package: wnpp Followup-For: Bug #948674 I am currently evaluating the Otter Browser. I have revived the packaging and am looking at its feature set. There are some bugs with the browser, which I'll try to work with the upstream. My intent is to first evaluate the longevity of this package and then act on whether this should be part of the Distribution
Bug#572853: ITP: thunarx-python -- Python bindings for the Thunar file manager
Package: wnpp Followup-For: Bug #572853 Owner: Ritesh Raj Sarraf I intend to take up maintenance for this package. My work currently depend on this and rabbitvcs package, which provides a rabbitvcs-thunar plugin. Since this bug has not had any activity for a long time, I am marking myself as the owner for this bug. Please let me know if you would like to co-maintain. THanks, Ritesh

Bug#915651: ITP: libnss-unknown -- nss module to handle unknown uids
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Ritesh Raj Sarraf * Package name: libnss-unknown Version : 0.0.1 Upstream Author : Sjoerd Simons * URL : https://gitlab.collabora.com/sjoerd/libnss-unknown * License : LGPL Programming Lang: C Description : nss module to handle unknown uids nss-unknown is a small library to gracefully handle unknown uids This small library is very useful in host <=> guest container environments. Under certian circumstances, admins can have UIDs/GIDs colliding inbetween hosts/guests. Certain system services (like dbus etc) are picky and become very unhappy under such scenarios. We primarily use this library in our environment in the guest containers. Thus I intend to maintain it for the forseeable future.
Bug#904563: ITP: snapper-gui -- graphical interface for snapper
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Ritesh Raj Sarraf * Package name: snapper-gui Version : git Upstream Author : Ricardo Vieira * URL : https://github.com/ricardomv/snapper-gui * License : GPL Programming Lang: Python Description : graphical interface for snapper Snapper-gui is a graphical user interface for the tool snapper for Linux filesystem snapshot management. It can compare snapshots and revert differences between snapshots. In simple terms, this allows root and non-root users to view older versions of files and revert changes. Currently works with btrfs, ext4 and thin-provisioned LVM volumes I intend to maintain it under Salsa Debian Team.

Bug#854902: ITP: appimagekit -- package desktop applications as AppImages that run on common Linux-based distributions
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Ritesh Raj Sarraf <r...@debian.org> * Package name: appimagekit Version : git Upstream Author : Simon Peter * URL : https://github.com/probonopd/AppImageKit/ * License : MIT/X Programming Lang: C Description : package desktop applications as AppImages that run on common Linux-based distributions Using AppImageKit you can package desktop applications as AppImages that run on common Linux-based operating systems, such as RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian and derivatives. The AppImage format is a format for packaging applications in a way that allows them to run on a variety of different target systems (base operating systems, distributions) without further modification. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppImage AppImageKit is a concrete implementation of the AppImage format and provides tools such as appimagetool and appimaged for conveniently handling AppImages. appimagetool uses a next-generation AppImage format based on squashfs and embeds a runtime for it. appimaged is a daemon that handles registering and unregistering AppImages with the system (e.g., menu entries, icons, MIME types, binary delta updates, and such). Flatpak and Snaps solve similar problems. AppImageKit is comparatively a very simplistic approach. This will be maintained under collab-maint

Or if you have any suggestions, please do mention. I think we should stick with this proposal of appending the type along with the name. 1. On autocompletions, it'd autocomplete to "execsnoop-", which is an invalid name either way. This will expect the user to pay attention and fire the correct command. 2. This approach is explicit, visible and allows for co-existence for both. So, unless there is a concern, I'd want to target this change for the next upload of both the tools. The bpfcc follow-up upload is pending because of a FTBFS bug. And on the perf-tools side, there haven't been any substantial changes lately, warranting an upload. But in its current form, it'll fail complaining file overwrites. Personally, I don't think the alternatives route may be of much use because apart from this 2 packages, I don't see any other package using these names. Also, IMO, the alternatives feature is usually useful for common tools like editor, pager etc. One option could be that we append the names of the binaries explicitly. -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA512 Hi Samuel, Co-incidentally, I looked up just now to see on my package list. I'm still happy , that you've expressed interest to maintain OXM in Debian. Thanks. That said, the reason why I looked back at the package was to ask the FTP team for its removal from the archive. Because I don't think the old tool works any more. At least from what I recollect, it already had some intermittent issues back then, and in between XenServer changed its management interface. Do you intend to target OXM for Debian Jessie ? If you do not have a timeline, I'd like to remove the old version from the archive. OTOH, if you are already ready to refresh the package, please do it soon so that the newer version could be part of Debian Jessie. - -- Ritesh Raj Sarraf RESEARCHUT - http://www.researchut.com "Necessity is the mother of invention." -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- iQIcBAEBCgAGBQJYGh7zAAoJEKY6WKPy4XVpaE4QAKng1nOMhh4tAceEUN2F/zoE lJEMGKTXEI1qfMoTXCz8U5r/kKuMBf8Yt2t8C8Ob+DOx/ETiZKdhxa8524jOKxNi 6H1jUc1ExMxiWXtsxnMcvs0r05RjwlzwjPct3etXrJLe/2urvbT6BjLUwx/9HVZw K/8YSQjKlChryVUL29C0M7uPhg6AcPoDJKPT35yUHImxHMg07dkrKNqR1IxpWOLl wFQeueyWOkSdwjV6051wJ/Y2kRfg6FR+trfdAHOvzRN8j0Yeo/atzl0yx99l3f0M z4oFyfPgxyCnQ2pndgpOf17i0U3qsUx0xxLKVrs33lxvRP2EqfwS7rq1AVSoensB a2PLzzWHx4wHjUI6Qu6NWJWW+SE71WbEBxdG6nsxZzeNHF6baKINpTGY6DBPUJlH 6MWlEIRLLhZVj1j6HjS7NI+dgAz6hl/c4oK7a/WuJuVKaGyD4VQDCuF0kcl/hEKm ZiPRaj3cfGam9qcqzmoS9haIaOer6WKCJ76bzgeeBMU+ZYKxzI5Kwo79aThjOpXt tNJyXS/wzGUBuY56/qltNd3UzREgDagKia1n1cVD0rIpuRoAzxnAOcdvUo3ON4tU bIFPpsg1XCt3N4yLsP/oQETcvdDVvuC0NbY4HyzBppP8xqtd13YEd4v07GAsDJ5V N6yCHIDOP53cM4PkSe4H =2z2y -END PGP SIGNATURE-
Bug#842968: O: system-storage-manager -- system storage management tool
Package: wnpp Severity: normal I intend to orphan the system-storage-manager package. There aren't really any pressing issues as such, but development is almost stalled. And I don't see this tools relevance any more. It was supposed to be a unified storage tool, but not sure if we really need a single tool to support all available block types and file systems. The package description is: System Storage Manager provides an easy to use command line interface to manage your storage using various technologies like lvm, btrfs, encrypted volumes and more. . In more sophisticated enterprise storage environments, management with Device Mapper (dm), Logical Volume Manager (LVM), or Multiple Devices (md) is becoming increasingly more difficult. With file systems added to the mix, the number of tools needed to configure and manage storage has grown so large that it is simply not user friendly. With so many options for a system administrator to consider, the opportunity for errors and problems is large. . You should install the ssm if you need to manage your storage with various technologies via a single unified interface.

Take this example tmpfs -> /tmp-ram - 4G /dev/sdb2 -> /tmp-disk - 10G mergerfs can help create a unified mount: /tmp-ram:/tmp-disk /tmp mergerfs So, for a 5 GiB file, mergerfs would intelligently write it to the block based backing device. Bug#824749: RFA: libstoragemgmt
Package: wnpp Severity: normal I intend to orphan this package, but my hope is to find a maintainer whom I could transition this to. libstoragemgmt is a vendor agnostic library to manage your enterprise storage needs. It can talk to Enterprise SAN arrays. The upstream for it is accessible at: https://github.com/libstorage/libstoragemgmt For this package, there isn't much install base in Debian, at this time.
Bug#819195: O: openxenmanager
Package: wnpp Severity: normal OpenXenManager had intended to be the Linux client for managing Citrix XenServer and other distributions that used the Xen Management API, xapi/xl, and newer ones that I don't even remember any more. My initial intent was to maintain it upstream. That didn't happen. Neither could I get any takers for its development. Luckily, it seems Daniel Lintott has embraced it and is doing some work. For anyone interested in oxm's development, please follow: https://github.com/OpenXenManager/openxenmanager/ As for the Debian package, I don't really use oxm any more. Hence orphaning. There isn't really much bug report against this package. Maintenance shouldn't be a big hasssle. But I would suggest keeping in sync with Daniel first.

The lldpad package adds LLDP support for all ports in addition to DCB Exchange protocol (DCBX) support on DCB capable ports (as was provided by dcbd). Also, support for additional LLDP TLVs has been added. . DCB is a collection of emerging standards-based technologies designed to allow Ethernet to support multiple types of traffic classes in the Data Center. The DCBX functionality of this package is designed to work with the DCB kernel interface (dcbnl in rtnetlink) that is included in the Linux kernel 2.6.29 or higher. The Intel ixgbe driver supports the dcbnl interface. . This package contains lldpad runtime binaries. I don't really have the enthusiasm to maintain FCoE any more. The package may not be in very good shape but FCoE's adoption itself is very low. Popcon stats report only 18. Thus shouldn't be any concern -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-wnpp-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Vincent, There might be merits of following the Ubuntu + Debian route _today_. Maybe. But for the project, I fail to see the benefits. I do not see myself convinced to mix packaging decisions for 2 different distributions with different intent. Take a look at the Dependencies in bumblebee-nvidia: Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}, bumblebee (= ${binary:Version}), nvidia-glx | nvidia-304 | nvidia-304-updates | nvidia-experimental-304 | nvidia-310 | nvidia-310-updates | nvidia-experimental-310 | nvidia-313 | nvidia-313-updates | nvidia-experimental-313 Sure it won't break. But it is all bogus for Debian, for ever, to OR depend on packages that are non-existent. As a DD, my efforts are to keep the packaging simple and minimal, so that it is easier for _all_ derivatives to consume it. Collaboration should be on * Uniform package names * Sharing patches * Sharing policies On Saturday 23 March 2013 04:23 PM, Vincent Cheng wrote: [Whoops, hit reply instead of reply to all. I can understand the intent but then it will become a never ending story. Which derivative will you stop at? It ends at Debian and Ubuntu. The one major difference that is the root cause of all the Debian/Ubuntu-specific sections in bumblebee's packaging is how differently the proprietary nvidia driver is packaged (if that were fixed one day, there'd be no need for all the derivative specific stuff). No Debian/Ubuntu derivatives use a different packaging scheme for the Nvidia proprietary driver, except those who suggest directly downloading it from Nvidia's website (which we don't support). Sooner or later, your packaging rules end up being: if debian: elif derivative1: elif derivative2: elif . Combining the efforts should mean working on a common base. Not accommodating multiple bases this way. We are working on a common base. I'm working with upstream to merge all the Debian-specific changes, so that we can all pull from the same source each time there's a new upstream release without me having to put as much work to merge everything. The current packaging (which Aron started) was based off of upstream's PPA, and so far it looks like upstream is receptive to our changes, so we can continue basing our work off of upstream's PPA for future releases. Hence, less duplicate work for us in Debian. Diverging the packaging must have good reasons; at least it brings in the flexibility and the speed. In this case, the best example is the nvidia packaging. I still don't see convincing rationale for us to diverge the bumblebee + primus packaging from the work that upstream have done, or to break compatibility between Debian and Ubuntu. Like I said in the previous email, I haven't seen a guideline on this topic. But from what I've observed in different teams, none of them package this way. I haven't seen any guidelines either. But I don't think I'm the only one who's actively trying to accomodate both Debian and Ubuntu; e.g. I've seen blog posts where DDs have demonstrated how to merge differences in Debian and Ubuntu in the packaging scripts (see Raphael Hertzog's explanation on how to generate different sets of dependencies for Debian and Ubuntu [1]), or e.g. the Ubuntu Games team folding into the Debian Games team to collaborate together (but to be fair, I don't think there was much of an Ubuntu Games team to begin with...). The differences between nvidia packaging isn't likely to change in a short time base on my understanding, so it's not neat to have a so long list in Depends/Recommends, and yes I agree it looks awful but we have no better choice to make everyone happy and keep the work load as less as it can be. That prompted me to dig deeper to find out what was causing the issue for me; it turns out that, for whatever reason, reverting one of my previous changes (overriding CXXFLAGS with dpkg-buildflags' default build flags) fixed the problem for me, although I'm still unsure why build hardening flags would've been the root cause. Oh well... I already purged the virtualgl packages, so I am pretty sure that it is using the primus backend. Please pull in my latest commits and test primusrun without uncommenting the above line. The primusrun wrapper script should still work correctly. Yes. It works but there's a catch. See below. The NEW queue is big already and there's very little progress (has to do with the freeze). But you would want to push primus now for review. Agreed, at this point I think bumblebee and primus are ready for review (bbswitch is already in the NEW queue and I'm happy with it as-is). If you're offering to review the package and/or sponsor it, thanks in advance! And feel free to make changes directly in the git repo if you want to change anything. :) I am too new and haven't investigated much about this whole dual graphics display. But I am willing to sponsor if there are no takers. By the way, with bumblebee + primus installed, you still will want to recommend users to call apps with the optirun interface. primus just sets some library variables and calls the application. The application is never run on the discrete nvidia card. Where as, if you run optirun (or -b primus), you will notice it running on nvidia. Oh!! I must have missed that. Yes. But I have ensure always that I review the config file. And in my opinion, the defaults should be KeepUnusedXServer=false I suppose a better way of explaining why watching /proc/acpi/bbswitch isn't reliable is by referencing the differences between how the virtualgl and primus backends work. Virtualgl will always cause the secondary X server to be spawned (everything is rendered on the secondary X server before being displayed on the primary X server), whereas primus will only offload glx calls to bumblebee, thus the secondary X server will only start up when you run some sort of opengl application with primus. That means that optirun bash or optirun xterm will invariably turn on the secondary X server and the nvidia gpu, whereas primusrun bash or primusrun xterm (or some other application that doesn't use any glx calls) will not. Thanks for explaining this. I will try to update all the packages now and see the final results. Looks like you guys have pushed some updates today. Please do test out my changes, but also please don't upload the packages yet. I want to sort out the conffiles issue [1] first... No worries. The main reason being that getting Unity for Debian would mean close co-ordination in between dependent package teams and accommodating changes. For example, the unity patch for chromium. And this definitely cannot be done by a single person. So are people interested and willing to take it further ??? I haven't done much than just try to get it build inside a sid/experimental pbuilder instance, so all the big task of co-ordination with other dependency teams is still pending... Oh!! And yes, it also runs on my box. -- Ritesh Raj Sarraf | http://people.debian.org/~rrs Debian - The Universal Operating System signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

With file systems added to the mix, the number of tools needed to configure and manage storage has grown so large that it is simply not user friendly. With so many options for a system administrator to consider, the opportunity for errors and problems is large. .
