Yes. Possibly that may be the reason. I did retitle the bug report, but
to an "ITA: " than an "ITP: "

Is there some explanation on this change ? Or is it some broken script

2021-05-13 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf
Package: wnpp
Followup-For: Bug #948674

I am currently evaluating the Otter Browser. I have revived the
packaging and am looking at its feature set.

There are some bugs with the browser, which I'll try to work with the
upstream.

My intent is to first evaluate the longevity of this package and then
act on whether this should be part of the Distribution

Bug#915651: ITP: libnss-unknown -- nss module to handle unknown uids

2018-12-05 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Ritesh Raj Sarraf

* Package name: libnss-unknown
  Version : 0.0.1
  Upstream Author : Sjoerd Simons
* URL : https://gitlab.collabora.com/sjoerd/libnss-unknown
* License : LGPL
  Programming Lang: C
Description : nss module to handle unknown uids

nss-unknown is a small library to gracefully handle unknown uids

This small library is very useful in host <=> guest container
environments. Under certian circumstances, admins can have UIDs/GIDs
colliding inbetween hosts/guests. Certain system services (like dbus
etc) are picky and become very unhappy under such scenarios.

We primarily use this library in our environment in the guest
containers. Thus I intend to maintain it for the forseeable future.

Snapper-gui is a graphical user interface for the tool snapper for Linux
filesystem snapshot management. It can compare snapshots and revert differences
between snapshots. In simple terms, this allows root and non-root users to view
older versions of files and revert changes. Currently works with btrfs, ext4

I intend to maintain it under Salsa Debian Team.

IIRC, There were some dependencies that appimage was embedding. We (Me
and AppImage Lead) worked on getting some of it worked out. There were
some local patches for foreign submodules, I think we pushed them
upstream.

Then, there was a fuse archive project. I don't recollect the name now.
That was needed to be packaged for Debian.

Then, there were some major issues with the way upstream had defined
the build. That is where I left off last.

Please do so. Because since then, a lot has changed for me and I don't
really have the time now (and in the near future) to work on it.

Bug#854902: ITP: appimagekit -- package desktop applications as AppImages that run on common Linux-based distributions

2017-02-11 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Ritesh Raj Sarraf <r...@debian.org>

* Package name: appimagekit
  Version : git
  Upstream Author : Simon Peter
* URL : https://github.com/probonopd/AppImageKit/
* License : MIT/X
  Programming Lang: C
Description : package desktop applications as AppImages that run on
common Linux-based distributions

Using AppImageKit you can package desktop applications as AppImages
that run on common Linux-based operating systems, such as RHEL, CentOS,
Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian and derivatives.

The AppImage format is a format for packaging applications in a way
that allows them to run on a variety of different target systems
(base operating systems, distributions) without further modification.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppImage

AppImageKit is a concrete implementation of the AppImage format and
provides tools such as appimagetool and appimaged for conveniently
handling AppImages.

appimagetool uses a next-generation AppImage format based on squashfs
and embeds a runtime for it. appimaged is a daemon that handles
registering and unregistering AppImages with the system (e.g., menu
entries, icons, MIME types, binary delta updates, and such).

Flatpak and Snaps solve similar problems. AppImageKit is comparatively a
very simplistic approach.
This will be maintained under collab-maint

I think we should stick with this proposal of appending the type along with the
name.

1. On autocompletions, it'd autocomplete to "execsnoop-", which is an invalid
name either way. This will expect the user to pay attention and fire the correct
command.

2. This approach is explicit, visible and allows for co-existence for both.

So, unless there is a concern, I'd want to target this change for the next
upload of both the tools. The bpfcc follow-up upload is pending because of a
FTBFS bug. And on the perf-tools side, there haven't been any substantial
changes lately, warranting an upload.

But whatever triggers the upload, we'll make this change included ?

Bug#847833: ITP: zram-tools -- Scripts for managing and monitoring zram usage

Hello Jonathan,

There's this other project, with some additional features.
https://github.com/Nefelim4ag/systemd-swap

Poor choice of name though. It gives the impression of only working with
systemd.

When I was initially looking for something pre-packaged in Debian, I stumbled
across it. You may want to add some of the features into your package.

Yes. I saw that too. Maybe you'd want to check with him first. If there are no
plans on maintaining it, then perhaps we should discontinue it.
I'd be surprised though, given his tools rely on ftrace, that he'd want to
discontinue them.

Yes. I can do that. But please, first lets start an email with Brendan (please
CC me too) and clarify on perf-tools-unstable's roadmap.

For now, I'll just mark perf-tools-unstable as a conflict against this package.
Later, once we've concluded with upstream, we can decide on renaming, or maybe
even merging both sources together, into a single package name.

How about ?
src: bpfcc

This relates well to what the tool is: BPF Compiler Collection, both in src and

I think I'll stick with this name unless there are concerns.

I'm aware of it. bcc is an already packaged binary package. It build from
source package: linux86

For this package, I've tried to be close to what upstream has already named.
So, for Debian, only the source package name is: bcc.
The binary packages are:

rrs@learner:~/rrs-home/Community/Packaging/bcc (master)$ grep Package:
debian/control
Package: libbcc

Package: python-bcc
Package: bcc-tools

Does it make sense ?
If you have suggestions, please mention them, because it'll be easier to make

Bug#846366: ITP: bcc -- Command line tools for BPF Compiler Collection (BCC)

2016-11-30 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hello Sebastien,

First of all, thanks for maintaining perf-tools-unstable. I use it many a times.

I just completed the major chunk of bcc packaging. I intend to maintain it under
collab-maint/ too.

The binary file names are conflicting for bcc and perf-tools-unstable. I don't
see a reason why one cannot co-install both the packages and use. But in its
current form, it'll fail complaining file overwrites.

Personally, I don't think the alternatives route may be of much use because
apart from this 2 packages, I don't see any other package using these names.
Also, IMO, the alternatives feature is usually useful for common tools like
editor, pager etc.

One option could be that we append the names of the binaries explicitly.
Example, for bcc => execsnoop-bcc, perf-tools => execsnoop-perf

What do you say ? Or if you have any suggestions, please do mention.

Thanks,
Ritesh

Up until today, there weren't any takers. Now that you have volunteered, I'll
just file an RC bug. Later, when you have the new release ready, you can upload
it.

Thanks.

Hi Samuel,

Co-incidentally, I looked up just now to see on my package list. I'm still happy
, that you've expressed interest to maintain OXM in Debian. Thanks.

That said, the reason why I looked back at the package was to ask the FTP team
for its removal from the archive. Because I don't think the old tool works any
more. At least from what I recollect, it already had some intermittent issues
back then, and in between XenServer changed its management interface.

Do you intend to target OXM for Debian Jessie ?

If you do not have a timeline, I'd like to remove the old version from the
archive. OTOH, if you are already ready to refresh the package, please do it
soon so that the newer version could be part of Debian Jessie.

Bug#842968: O: system-storage-manager -- system storage management tool

2016-11-02 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I intend to orphan the system-storage-manager package.

There aren't really any pressing issues as such, but development is
almost stalled. And I don't see this tools relevance any more. It was
supposed to be a unified storage tool, but not sure if we really need a
single tool to support all available block types and file systems.

The package description is:
System Storage Manager provides an easy to use command line interface to
manage your storage using various technologies like lvm, btrfs, encrypted
 volumes and more.
 .
In more sophisticated enterprise storage environments, management with
Device Mapper (dm), Logical Volume Manager (LVM), or Multiple Devices (md)
is becoming increasingly more difficult. With file systems added to the mix,
the number of tools needed to configure and manage storage has grown so large
that it is simply not user friendly. With so many options for a system
administrator to consider, the opportunity for errors and problems is large.
 .
You should install the ssm if you need to manage your storage with various
technologies via a single unified interface.

I'm hereby orphaning this package, due to lack of interest in the domain, at
this time. For now, I'll file a RC bug against the package, because in its
current state, it wouldn't be good to see it be part of the next stable release.

Incase it gets adopted by a new maintainer, a new upstream release should help
freshen up the package (and fix the RC bug).

mergefs allows union mount, created out of multiple drives.

Take this example

tmpfs -> /tmp-ram - 4G
/dev/sdb2 -> /tmp-disk - 10G

mergerfs can help create a unified mount:
/tmp-ram:/tmp-disk /tmp mergerfs

So, for a 5 GiB file, mergerfs would intelligently write it to the block based
backing device.

Here are some stats:

Bug#824749: RFA: libstoragemgmt

2016-05-19 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I intend to orphan this package, but my hope is to find a maintainer
whom I could transition this to.

libstoragemgmt is a vendor agnostic library to manage your enterprise
storage needs. It can talk to Enterprise SAN arrays.

The upstream for it is accessible at:
https://github.com/libstorage/libstoragemgmt

For this package, there isn't much install base in Debian, at this time.

Bug#819195: O: openxenmanager

2016-03-24 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

OpenXenManager had intended to be the Linux client for managing Citrix
XenServer and other distributions that used the Xen Management API,
xapi/xl, and newer ones that I don't even remember any more.

My initial intent was to maintain it upstream. That didn't happen.
Neither could I get any takers for its development.

Luckily, it seems Daniel Lintott has embraced it and is doing some work.
For anyone interested in oxm's development, please follow:
https://github.com/OpenXenManager/openxenmanager/

As for the Debian package, I don't really use oxm any more. Hence
orphaning.

There isn't really much bug report against this package. Maintenance
shouldn't be a big hasssle. But I would suggest keeping in sync with
Daniel first.

Bug#790755: RFA: openxenmanager

2015-07-01 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I don't use XCP anymore, not do I have the lab where, at least, I used to test
it with Citrix XenServer's XCP implementation.

And I do not see that changing for me. Thus looking for another maintainer to
take it over.

The upstream development is not happening at:
https://github.com/OpenXenManager/openxenmanager

Your first step would be to sync up with Daniel, because from my last
conversation with him, he is interested to (co) maintain the package

Is this allowed by the Debian packaging guidelines?
Sharing is good but this is misleading both the product and brand.
Derivatives are supposed to sync to the Debian archive and generate a
delta. Typically the delta will be distro name changes et cetera.
By adding derivative names (in this case Ubuntu) right into its pure
package, this will create utter confusion.

I'd urge you to package with only Debian in mind and let the derivatives
handle it with a small delta.

Bug#673424: Fwd: Bug#673424: bbswitch packaging

2013-03-23 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf
Vincent,

There might be merits of following the Ubuntu + Debian route _today_.
Maybe. But for the project, I fail to see the benefits.
I do not see myself convinced to mix packaging decisions for 2 different
distributions with different intent.

Take a look at the Dependencies in bumblebee-nvidia:

Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}, bumblebee (=
${binary:Version}),
 nvidia-glx | nvidia-304 | nvidia-304-updates | nvidia-experimental-304 |
 nvidia-310 | nvidia-310-updates | nvidia-experimental-310 |
 nvidia-313 | nvidia-313-updates | nvidia-experimental-313

Sure it won't break. But it is all bogus for Debian, for ever, to OR
depend on packages that are non-existent.

As a DD, my efforts are to keep the packaging simple and minimal, so
that it is easier for _all_ derivatives to consume it.

Collaboration should be on
* Uniform package names
* Sharing patches
* Sharing policies

It ends at Debian and Ubuntu. The one major difference that is the
root cause of all the Debian/Ubuntu-specific sections in bumblebee's
packaging is how differently the proprietary nvidia driver is packaged
(if that were fixed one day, there'd be no need for all the derivative
specific stuff). No Debian/Ubuntu derivatives use a different
packaging scheme for the Nvidia proprietary driver, except those who
suggest directly downloading it from Nvidia's website (which we don't
 support).

Sooner or later, your packaging rules end up being:

 if debian:
 elif derivative1:
 elif derivative2:
 elif .

Combining the efforts should mean working on a common base. Not
 accommodating multiple bases this way.
We are working on a common base. I'm working with upstream to merge
all the Debian-specific changes, so that we can all pull from the same
source each time there's a new upstream release without me having to
put as much work to merge everything. The current packaging (which
Aron started) was based off of upstream's PPA, and so far it looks
like upstream is receptive to our changes, so we can continue basing
our work off of upstream's PPA for future releases. Hence, less
duplicate work for us in Debian.

Diverging the packaging must have good reasons; at least it brings in
the flexibility and the speed. In this case, the best example is the
 nvidia packaging.
I still don't see convincing rationale for us to diverge the bumblebee
+ primus packaging from the work that upstream have done, or to break
 compatibility between Debian and Ubuntu.

Like I said in the previous email, I haven't seen a guideline on this
topic. But from what I've observed in different teams, none of them
 package this way.
I haven't seen any guidelines either. But I don't think I'm the only
one who's actively trying to accomodate both Debian and Ubuntu; e.g.
I've seen blog posts where DDs have demonstrated how to merge
differences in Debian and Ubuntu in the packaging scripts (see Raphael
Hertzog's explanation on how to generate different sets of
dependencies for Debian and Ubuntu [1]), or e.g. the Ubuntu Games team
folding into the Debian Games team to collaborate together (but to be
fair, I don't think there was much of an Ubuntu Games team to begin
 with...).

 Vincent

I agree that keeping a package simple have benefits, but I don't think
making our life harder is a good reason to cut down such stuff. Our
current packaging are largely based on upstream's efforts, and we have
to agree that upstream consider both Debian and Ubuntu are important.
We'd like to have a good relation with upstream, and actually we have
friends who use these packages on both Debian and Ubuntu, so if we
just cut down the compatibility stuff then we must deal with both
Debian and Ubuntu to keep everyone happy, or we get hated.

The differences between nvidia packaging isn't likely to change in a
short time base on my understanding, so it's not neat to have a so
long list in Depends/Recommends, and yes I agree it looks awful but we
have no better choice to make everyone happy and keep the work load as
 less as it can be.

As much as I want and will use bumblebee, I do not agree with the
justification. Let's just disagree. :-)
You sponsor the packages bumblebee and primus so that it gets in the queue.

Yes. Please. The upstream NEWS file has nothing but the changelog. And

I don't see it on github. The MODULE_AUTHOR has the name but without the

This is no big deal. I will upload otherwise also. It is just FYI.

Well, bbswitch should work fine on its own for users who don't want to
use their discrete nvidia gpu, and just want power savings (by turning
off the nvidia card with the bbswitch kernel module). Suggesting
bumblebee sounds like a good idea though.

Thanks. I will pull back your changes soon after dinner. And hopefully

with the optirun+virtualgl backend, so I'm surprised that it worked
for you. That prompted me to dig deeper to find out what was causing
the issue for me; it turns out that, for whatever reason, reverting
one of my previous changes (overriding CXXFLAGS with dpkg-buildflags'
default build flags) fixed the problem for me, although I'm still
unsure why build hardening flags would've been the root cause. Oh
 well...

I already purged the virtualgl packages, so I am pretty sure that it is
using the primus backend.

Please pull in my latest commits and test primusrun without
uncommenting the above line. The primusrun wrapper script should still
 work correctly.

Yes. It works but there's a catch. See below.
The NEW queue is big already and there's very little progress (has to do
with the freeze). But you would want to push primus now for review.
Agreed, at this point I think bumblebee and primus are ready for
review (bbswitch is already in the NEW queue and I'm happy with it
as-is). If you're offering to review the package and/or sponsor it,
thanks in advance! And feel free to make changes directly in the git
repo if you want to change anything. :)

I am too new and haven't investigated much about this whole dual
graphics display. But I am willing to sponsor if there are no takers.

By the way, with bumblebee + primus installed, you still will want to
recommend users to call apps with the optirun interface.
primus just sets some library variables and calls the application. The
application is never run on the discrete nvidia card.

Where as, if you run optirun (or -b primus), you will notice it running
on nvidia.

Easiest way to verify this is to watch /proc/acpi/bbswitch when using
either of the interface.

Bug#673424: bbswitch packaging

Okay!! I got uniform results but I had to again uncomment the following
line. Without it, it was running on the Intel card.

# Need functions from primus libGL to take precedence
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${PRIMUS_libGL}${LD_LIBRARY_PATH:+:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH}

Where as, if you run optirun (or -b primus), you will notice it running
  on nvidia.

Easiest way to verify this is to watch /proc/acpi/bbswitch when using
  either of the interface.
That's not reliable way of verifying this because you can force the
secondary X server to be permanently on, and running on your nvidia
 GPU. It's as simple as
 s/KeepUnusedXServer=false/KeepUnusedXServer=true/ in
 /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf, or optirun bash.
Yes. But I have ensure always that I review the config file. And in my
opinion, the defaults should be KeepUnusedXServer=false

I will try to update all the packages now and see the final results.
Looks like you guys have pushed some updates today.

That line was already uncommented out in the script shipped by the package...
Oh!! I must have missed that.

Yes. But I have ensure always that I review the config file. And in my
opinion, the defaults should be KeepUnusedXServer=false
I suppose a better way of explaining why watching /proc/acpi/bbswitch
isn't reliable is by referencing the differences between how the
virtualgl and primus backends work. Virtualgl will always cause the
secondary X server to be spawned (everything is rendered on the
secondary X server before being displayed on the primary X server),
whereas primus will only offload glx calls to bumblebee, thus the
secondary X server will only start up when you run some sort of opengl
application with primus. That means that optirun bash or optirun
xterm will invariably turn on the secondary X server and the nvidia
gpu, whereas primusrun bash or primusrun xterm (or some other
application that doesn't use any glx calls) will not.

Thanks for explaining this.

I will try to update all the packages now and see the final results.
Looks like you guys have pushed some updates today.
Please do test out my changes, but also please don't upload the
packages yet. I want to sort out the conffiles issue [1] first...

No worries. I myself would prefer if Aron (or someone else from the
current pkg-nvidia team) reviews and does the upload.

I pulled in your changes today and built primus. It is playing well with
my setup. Bumblebee is able to apply the power savings when
optirun/primusrun is not in use.

I did have to uncomment the following in primusrun to make it work.

# Mesa drivers need a few symbols to be visible
export PRIMUS_LOAD_GLOBAL=${PRIMUS_LOAD_GLOBAL:-'libglapi.so.0'}

The NEW queue is big already and there's very little progress (has to do
with the freeze). But you would want to push primus now for review.

Bug#609278: Unity

2013-01-14 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf
Hello Folks still following this ITP.

I spent some time trying to see if I could get the Unity shell packaged
for Debian. I started with taking the latest build from precise-updates
and see what needs change and what is missing

Here's what I have:

rrs@champaran:~/Community/Packaging/Unity$ ls
bamf/ frame/ grail/
Lenses/ libunity-webapps/ unity/ x11proto-fixes/
compiz/geis/humanity-icon-theme/
libunity/ libxfixes/ unity-asset-pool/
dbus-test-runner/ glib2.0-2.32.3/ indicator-messages/
libunity-misc/ nux/ unity-greeter/

Many of it is already in Debian in sid and experimental. Where as some
others (icons etc) can always be addons.

Building the entire thing was a real PITA. The main reason being that
getting Unity for Debian would mean close co-ordination in between
dependent package teams and accommodating changes. For example, the
unity patch for chromium.
And this definitely cannot be done by a single person. So are people
interested and willing to take it further ???

I haven't done much than just try to get it build inside a
sid/experimental pbuilder instance, so all the big task of co-ordination
with other dependency teams is still pending...

Oh!! And yes, it also runs on my box.

Description : system storage management tool

System Storage Manager provides an easy to use command line interface to
manage your storage using various technologies like lvm, btrfs, encrypted
 volumes and more.
 .
In more sophisticated enterprise storage environments, management with
Device Mapper (dm), Logical Volume Manager (LVM), or Multiple Devices (md)
is becoming increasingly more difficult. With file systems added to the mix,
the number of tools needed to configure and manage storage has grown so large
that it is simply not user friendly. With so many options for a system
administrator to consider, the opportunity for errors and problems is large.
 .
The btrfs administration tools have shown us that storage management can
be simplified, and we are working to bring that ease of use to Linux file
 systems in general.
 .
You should install the ssm if you need to manage your storage with various
technologies via a single unified interface.

I am ITPing this bug as I like the idea of automated crash handling and

I have already done the packaging [1] and the basic stuff works, as in,
if you trigger a segfault, it gets trapped and apport is called.
Right now, apport seems to be crashing. It is perhaps to do with some of
the missing modules (maybe related to launchpadlib).

I will look into it soon as time permits. I anyone is interested, please
feel free to check out the git repo.

colibri is a passive notification system for KDE4 desktop

Colibri notifications look lighter and are completely passive:
they do not provide any buttons. You may or may not like this.
Since they are completely passive, they smoothly fade away when
you mouse over them, allowing you to interact with any window behind
them.
 .
They also do not stack each others: if multiple notifications happen,
they will be shown one at a time.

Linux allows you to add and remove SCSI devices without rebooting by

remove-single-device command works similarily.

To Debian-Devel:
This package is just one single shell script. But an important one. The
rescan-scsi-bus.sh script helps a lot in the SAN space where there could
be targets with sporadic connecitons. Is it okay to package a single
shell script as a package?

Description : a simple low-level configuration tool set for LIO

lio-utils provide a simple low-level configuration tool set for LIO,
including Target and its backstores including tcm_loop, and the iSCSI,
FCoE and Fibre Channel fabric modules.

lio-utils use the configFS kernel API that is available with LIO 3,
which provides a clean interface for controlling the kernel level Target
engine and its fabric module subsystems. lio-utils require LIO 3 or
higher, and provide iSCSI target functionality on a number of Linux
baremetal and virtualized systems. Running LIO 3 requires a newer Linux
kernel (≥v2.6.29).

Bug#572461: libhbalinux: changing back from ITP to RFP

owner 572461 !

I am still struggling on the hardware front. Once I get access, I'll
package. Changing back to RFP will not help much.
In case someone is interested, they can comment on this bug report.

 Hi,

This is an automatic email to change the status of libhbalinux back from ITP
(Intent to Package) to RFP (Request for Package), because this bug hasn't seen
any activity during the last 6 months.

If you are still interested in adopting libhbalinux, please send a mail to
 cont...@bugs.debian.org with:

  owner 572461 !
  thanks

However, it is not recommended to keep ITP for a long time without acting on
the package, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to refrain from
packaging that software. It is also a good idea to document your progress on
this ITP from time to time, by mailing 572...@bugs.debian.org.

Thank you for your interest in Debian,

 Hi,
It'd be great if somebody actually running multipath-tools in production
would adopt the package. While I can do some testing with iSCSI and
virtual machines that's just not the same for such a (in some areas)
critical piece of software. I'd be happy to act as a co-maintainer.
 Cheers,

My day job involves working on Linux SAN. I can adopt it.

Description: A Link Layer Discovery Protocol Implementation

The lldpad package is an implementation of the Link Layer Discovery Protocol
(LLDP). It originated from Intel's Data Center Bridging (DCB) software - the
dcbd package. The lldpad package adds LLDP support for all ports in addition
to DCB Exchange protocol (DCBX) support on DCB capable ports (as was provided
by dcbd). Also, support for additional LLDP TLVs has been added.

DCB is a collection of emerging standards-based technologies designed to allow
Ethernet to support multiple types of traffic classes in the Data Center.
The DCBX functionality of this package is designed to work with the DCB kernel
interface (dcbnl in rtnetlink) that is included in the Linux kernel 2.6.29 or
higher. The Intel ixgbe driver supports the dcbnl interface.
