Bug#90347: ITP: wmacpi -- A WindowMaker dock app to monitor battery status

2001-03-19 Thread Simon Richter
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I intend to package wmacpi, which is a WindowMaker dockable battery status
monitor for ACPI systems (so the package will be i386 and ia64 only for
the first time). ATM this program only works with one specific kernel
version as it queries the ever-changing /proc interface directly, but as
I'm occasionally doing work on ACPI4Linux it should be possible to work
out an abstraction there.

The license is GPL2, the package can be downloaded from
http://www.ne.jp/asahi/linux/timecop/

Hi,

I intend to package wmfinder, which is a Qt based file manager for
WindowMaker. The packaging will take some time, as the program currently
uses Qt 1.45, which has been dropped. I'm talking to upstream about
converting it to Qt 2.

Bug#80278: Please test wmfinder 0.5.1-1

2001-07-27 Thread Simon Richter
Hi,

I have ported wmfinder to Qt 2 and uploaded it to experimental[1] (ATM it
is in incoming[2]) for i386 and m68k. Due to Qt's brain dead signal
handling it may happen that some signals aren't delivered correctly (there
is a warning on stderr then), also there may be a lot of other bugs.

It would be cool if some people would test the package and submit lots of
bug reports before I upload it to unstable.

Hi,

I intent to package undms, a small utility that unpacks DiskMasher

Licensing issues prevent me from uploading until I get an official okay
from the author (but I doubt there will be any problem, it's already in

Bug#117977: ITP: signing-party

2001-11-01 Thread Simon Richter
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I'm at a conference ATM, and I'm going to introduce a few people to the
concepts of key signing tomorrow. For this, I've hacked a few scripts, for
example one that makes a PS file which looks like "gpg --list-keys" output
(except with a nicer font), which I'd like to package so people can use
them for their own signing parties. Version 0.1-1 will only be these two
scripts, for 0.2-1 I'm also planning exhaustive documentation (HOWTO
signing-party, HOWTO explain the concept).

I don't have the stuff downloadable yet but I hope to get this done before
Sunday. The package will definitely not be ready before Sunday evening
since I don't have access to my GPG key remotely (as it should be).

Bug#120618: ITP: magicfilter-forcefilter

2001-11-22 Thread Simon Richter
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

Since the stupid printer spooler running on my Amiga (which is
binary-only, so I can't fix it) likes to tell lpd that the file should not
be filtered, magicfilter is called with the -c option which makes it
ignore all filters configured. Alas, this cannot be turned off, so to make
my printer usable again, I had to hack a tool which removes the "-c"
option from the command line (a script wouldn't do due to the way
magicfilter is called). To properly integrate this into my system, I've
packaged it (and probably other people might want such a thing too).

Description: Force filtering with magicfilter against the user's request
With the BSD lpr command, it is possible to specify that the job is not to be
run through a print filter. To avoid abuse, the filter is still run, but told
not do do anything. Magicfilter obeys this, which may not be what you want.
 .
This program simply wraps around the magicfilter main binary, removing the -c
option if present. This is necessary if some broken lpr/lpd client (I'm using
NetParLpd on the Amiga if you want to know it) says that the file already has
been filtered and should be sent to the printer as is. You may also find this
useful if you have a filter configured that uses magicfilter and should never
be bypassed (such as detecting evil postscript code etc.).

License is GPL, and yes, I had fun writing that description.

Subject: [RFC] Multiprocessor Control Interfaces

Hello All,

I'm currently working on adding multiprocessor control interfaces
to Linux. My current efforts can be found here:

   http://www.ccur.com/realtime/oss

These are clean-room implementations of similar tools that have
been available in our proprietary *nix for quite some time, and
so the interfaces have a fair amount of mileage under their belts.
Note that the scope is somewhat wider than just MP.

There has been some discussion of "chaff" and other interfaces
recently on this list, so in an effort to hopefully move towards
a standard more quickly I've gotten permission from my employer
to GPL the code I've written. I'm very interested in comments
and feedback on any or all of this work.

Here's the README file from the package:

This package contains:

   run(1)
A multiprocessor control command line tool.

   mpadvise(3)
  A multiprocessor control library interface.

These services rely upon Robert Love's CPU Affinity patch
(version 2.4.16-1 was used for testing) which is available here:

   http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/rml/cpu-affinity/v2.4/

To build the code, simply unpack it and type "make". The code has
been tested on Red Hat 7.1 and 7.2 systems, though it is still
fairly new and almost certainly contains bugs.

An attempt was made to abstract the "cpuset" representation of
the current system in order to have binaries that in theory
could work on systems with more than 32 cpus. For this to work,
the run(1) command would need to be linked against a shared
mpadvise(3) library (currently only a static library is made).

This code is being released in the hopes that it will become
the basis for the Linux multiprocessor control standard interfaces.
I am very interested in getting feedback on this package,
so please contact me via email or LKML if you have any.

This source code is licensed under the GNU GPL Version 2.

Why are you posting an ITP if you are simply renaming the package? Also,
the current "ircd" package has a "Replaces: ircd-dalnet" -- I'm not sure
this is actually what you want (files from ircd will have precedence

Bug#262032: where to find your spandsp deb?

2005-01-17 Thread Simon Richter
Hi,
I've just seen your ITP is already some time old. For i have just today
been approached by the upstream of spandsp to do the deb for YATE, I had
put a new copy together myself already. Yet as I now see your wnpp bug,
I'd like to crosscheck with mine and add the asterisk-fax to the one
that should be uploaded.
The package is already built and uploaded, currently in the NEW queue
and hence inaccessible from incoming. I have uploaded my packages to
http://people.debian.org/~sjr/ (the glitch in the rules file that
updates the wrong config.guess/config.sub files is already corrected in
my local copy).

I've put my deb into pkg-voip svn to have it
together with YATE and asterisk. Please comment if you'd like to
maintain it when uploaded (in pkg-voip or standalone) or if you'd prefer
it maintained by me.
I did the initial packaging as I work for a VoIP company and need the
package on a daily basis. In fact I don't really care who maintains the
package since it is not overly complicated, but I do prefer it to be
done by someone on non-i386 (as you might guess from the .diff.gz).

Bug#263085: ITP: kernel-patch-misdn -- The "modular ISDN" driver

2004-08-02 Thread Simon Richter
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I intend to package the mISDN drivers in the form of a kernel patch. At
present, there is no formal release yet, so I'm retrieving the
"kernel26" branch from CVS and diffing them against the 2.6 kernel tree.

If there is sufficient interest, I can also provide kernel 2.4 patches.

* Package name: kernel-patch-misdn
  Version : CVS
  Upstream Author : Karsten Keil <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.isdn4linux.de/
* License : GPL
Description : The "modular ISDN" driver

The modular ISDN drivers are the new direction the ISDN4Linux project is
heading to. The most prominent new feature is support for ISDN cards in
"NT" mode, which makes it possible to connect an ISDN phone to your
computer, which acts as a router. Together with the asterisk-chan-misdn
package, you can use such ISDN cards with asterisk.

This is unreleased software, use at your own risk.

Bug#330125: status of toolchain-source?

I think the most important aspect of that is the gcc-4.1-source package,
as with that you can create a small package that just contains the
necessary scripting to fully bootstrap a cross compiler. So far,
toolchain-source both provided the source and the scripting, in order to
really get the same functionality, we'd need to merge the "build
scripting from template" stuff into the gcc package as well.

In general I would agree that merging is good. One of my packages
requires a compiler for i386-linux to build, another is going to require
a compiler for arm-linux, it would be good if there were a way to do
this sanely (for various levels of sanely, I'm currently thinking about

Build-Depends-Indep: gcc-i386-cross | gcc-source [!i386],
  binutils-i386-cross | binutils-source [!i386]

and simply building the necessary cross compiler from debian/rules)

> Have you looked at how GCC does it now? It's really trivial.

Bootstrapping is nontrivial these days, because someone fscked up the
gcc build, so it no longer suffices to call the "all-host" rule to get a
freestanding compiler you could use for kernel and libc, and then return
to the gcc tree and invoke the "all" rule. Instead, you now need to
configure gcc as freestanding, no shared libs, and compile your kernel
and libc with that, then throw away your compiler and start anew.

What would be needed is a way to build a freestanding compiler, then
later on add libcs to the existing package, probably by editing the
specs file.

Have fun; the only thing I'd ask for is a big fat-ass warning that this
is not a drop-in replacement for the *dm packages as it does not handle

 - properly resetting the X server after logout (severe security

 - non-/etc/shadow user accounts (LDAP etc).

I.e. it is fine for a laptop, but I would recommend against its use in a
true multiuser environment.

There were some minor nits as well.

ITP hijacking: well, ITPs are advisory locks only. You can either just
close the ITP with your upload, or set the bug owner to yourself before
doing that. It doesn't make much difference, really.

Hi,

I packaged the SINTEF Spline Library a while ago because a prerelease

this package is probably not used by many people.

That said, it also hasn't had any new upstream releases in ten years, so

If there is someone who actively uses this package, and wants to become

Not at all.

Yes. I just built a firmware file for an embedded device using the
emdebian compiler, and it works fine.

Would it make sense to name the package "maven-enforcer"?

I dimly remember that "plconfig" is the traditional name for the tool to
configure PLIP links. This could lead to curious and interesting
effects.

Okay, so either my memory is incorrect, or we are not very traditional.

I think the main problem is that "good" is a subjective term, so people
who believe that they are doing "good" feel entitled to use the work,
and others who disagree with their views will claim that they are in
breach of the licence. Who gets to be the authority on what is "good"?

I'd also prefer if people would not use my software for causes I find
objectionable, but I don't think I can even do so much as draw a clear
line what constitutes "use". For example, I've written a tiny script
that will take your GPG key and produce a printable file with the
important data of the key arranged so that you can easily create bits of
paper to hand out at keysigning events. Now, people are using this to
establish secure communication channels, which can be used for any kind
of purpose, including conspiring to commit crime. Am I at fault for not
excluding this in the licence? Have I facilitated that crime because I
made it easier for the criminals to conspire?

I think at some point I just have to decline responsibility for others.

Bug#583861: RFA: apache2-redirtoservname

2010-05-31 Thread Simon Richter
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Hi,

as announced last week, I'd like to find a new maintainer for
apache2-redirtoservname, which would also come with upstream duties. The
package is easy to understand, and ideally suited for a beginner.

There is currently one open bug, which is marked "serious" as the
package failed to build on what I perceive as a broken build environment
(so I think this is not a bug in the package itself).

Other than that, the package is fairly low-maintenance, given that its
core functionality works and Apache's plugin ABI has been stable over
the years. Documentation could be improved though.

Bug#583862: RFA: asio -- cross-platform C++ library for network programming

2010-05-31 Thread Simon Richter
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Hi,

as announced last week, I'd like to find a new maintainer for asio.

The package description is:
asio is a cross-platform C++ library for network programming that provides
developers with a consistent asynchronous I/O model using a modern C++
approach. It has recently been accepted into Boost.

The prospective new maintainer will need significant C++ skills, given
that this is a header-only library (i.e. templates and inline
functions) with lots of preprocessor use.

There are currently two open bugs, both of which require changes to the
actual code.

As the package also exists within Boost (albeit in a different
namespace), it may be worth considering creating a metapackage that
pulls in the required packages from Boost and redirects the namespace
appropriately; this should of course be coordinated with upstream.

Bug#583866: RFA: asterisk-prompt-se

2010-05-31 Thread Simon Richter
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Hi,

as announced last week, I'd like to find a new maintainer for the
Swedish voice prompts for Asterisk.

The current package is technically the newest version available, but I
doubt that Asterisk hasn't gained a significant amount of new features
in the last four years, so several "standard" prompts may me missing
now.

The packaging itself is simple, as only a bunch of data files needs to
be installed, so it is suitable for beginners. The major difficulty in
maintaining the package is that you cannot easily fix problems in
upstream's data, given that they are voice recordings -- so apart from
packaging technicalities, the central maintenance task is communication
with upstream.

There is one open bug, related to voicemail prompts; I'm currently
unsure whether it is trivial or would require upstream action.

The packager should ideally speak Swedish natively, both to verify
issues with the package and for easier communication with upstream;
also, experience with Asterisk is a major bonus.

It should be possible to maintain this package as part of the VoIP team
or on your own, depending on your preference; as far as I know, the team
does not have a native Swedish speaker, so they can only help with
technical issues (their build system is not for the faint of heart,
though).

Bug#584107: RFA: iptables-persistent -- Simple package to set up iptables on boot

2010-06-01 Thread Simon Richter
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Hi,

As announced last week, I'd like to find a new maintainer for the
iptables-persistent package.

The package description is:
This package contains just a system startup script that restores iptables
 rules from a configuration file.
 .
Since this is aimed at experienced admins, there is no configuration
 wizard.

The package itself is really simple. One init script, one dependency.
You should be somewhat familiar with the init system, including its
multitude of variants.

Bug#584108: RFA: libopenusb -- alternative userspace USB programming library

2010-06-01 Thread Simon Richter
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Hi,

as announced last week, I'd like to find a new maintainer for
libopenusb.

The package description is:
The Open USB library provides a platform independent API to USB, including
synchronous and asynchronous transfers and thread safety.

The package is a mostly standard library package with a fairly inactive
upstream. The thread safety bit is sort of an exaggeration, as there is
a race condition somewhere, so be prepared to handle a bit of C
debugging.

The "1.00" bit means that multiple versions will be maintained
independently (for long term support etc)?

Okay, but what does it do? This is a bunch of buzzwords :/

My point is that the description should not be a sales pitch, but rather
an objective account of what the software can and cannot do. Think of it
from the point of view of the administrator tasked with deciding which
software to use -- most likely she won't care that this is the most
"flexible" solution, but rather whether it will get the job done.

While packages are a great way of reducing the time to install the
software, it still requires a lot of time to try out a particular piece
of software. I generally start with those that I know have the features
I require, which should be clear from the description.

No, just use the new description. The ITP bug has no technical meaning,
it is just to avoid having two people work on the same package and catch
some things like weird licences early on (because the initial mail is
copied to the developer mailing list), but technically it is a bug the
maintainer opens and closes, with no one else involved.
