Bug#455325: wicd, are you going to be the maintainer?

2008-10-25 Thread Stephen Birch
Hi David

I noticed that wicd has been uploaded to debian now. Is it your
intention to be the maintainer from this point forward?

My own availability is a little limited so I am very happy it has found a
maintainer. Do I need to do anything to help?

If it is not your intention to be the maintainer, let me know and I'll
push it up my priority stack.

Regards,

Steve

Would be nice to provide a patch for upstream since I asked Adam to put
the package code in the SVN (wicd/branches/debian-packaging)
You'll find there a Makefile I provided to pdebuild

If it's ok and don't have any other sponsoring going on I'll upload

Ok .. please go ahead and upload.

Many Thanks

Hi

It would probably be simpler if you just take over the package!

2008-02-22 Thread Stephen Birch
David,

I have been on travel (story of my life :-) since changing the status of
wicd to ITP and so have made little progress on the package. If you are
already working with upstream and have packing ready to go it is
probably better if I back out and let you become the maintainer for
wicd.

If you are still interested I urge you to move quickly, this is a very
good package and needs to be uploaded as soon as possible.

If you no longer want wicd, let me know and I'll continue my packaging
work.

Warm regards,
Steve

Bug#311373: Still interested in this package?

2006-01-13 Thread Stephen Birch
Reinhard Tartler([EMAIL PROTECTED])@2006-01-13 10:54:
This bug has been left open for a really long time, do you still intend
 to maintain it?

Hi there..

My original intention was to wait until my long standing debian
application completed and then do the packaging but the application
process seems to be rather FUBAR. Both my NM and also the sponsorship
of my other packages are both in a frustrating quagmire because the
other folks involved are so very slow.

FYI I hit the same problem with another package (spca5xx) which had
other interested parties. I ended up creating an alioth account and
now several people are maintaining that package. It worked out really
well.

Let me ask ...

Does collab-maint involve more than just creating an alioth account?

Either way, I am very happy to create such an account for wifi-radar
or even hand over the ITP. Wifi-radar is a very useful tool which IMHO
really must be included in etch.

My struggles with NM and sponsorship should not get in the way.

BTW wifi-radar is already packaged in ubuntu and the package (to my
eye) looks okay so I was planning to just import that package into
Debian. I don't have time to reinvent the wheel!

I may end up dropping my Debian activities anyway ... I have started
to look into joining Ubuntu instead - the NM process has pretty much
tested my patience to the limit. Although there have been no issues,
my application has been in the works since 2004-01-28. Life is too
short :-)

Bug#311373: Still interested in this package?

2006-01-13 Thread Stephen Birch

Reinhard Tartler([EMAIL PROTECTED])@2006-01-13 11:58:
it is a completly new project, we'll see how it will evolve. We
 would
need an sponsor anyway, but there are some interested DDs for
 that. You
need an alioth account and contact then Raphael Hertzog to add you
 to
 the team.

I do already have an alioth account, I needed one to get spca5xx uploaded
- but my account is a -guest account.

I will upload the current ubuntu package to collab-main svn then.

Cool. Would you mind putting a 'closes #311373' in the changelog to
close the ITP please.

I was involved when reviewing and eventually uploading it to ubuntu,
 I
use it from time to time on my ubuntu laptop.

Well then I owe you a thank you I use the package on my Ubuntu
machines. Sounds like wifi-radar in Debian is in good hands with you
behind it. Excellent!

I'm currently on the other way round: in order to help ubuntu
 further,
I started NM myself in order to bring packages like wifi-radar to
debian. This is one pice on my fight to lower divergence :)

Good for you ... I am 100% behind that. Ubuntu is doing a really great
job and all involved should be PROUD. But it would be a shame if
Ubuntu did diverge into a fork. Collaboration like yours is the key.

Good luck with your NM - I think it all comes down to the people
involved. If you get a responsive AM it will go smoothly. Although my
AM is a top-notch guy (Joerg) he is just badly over extended hence the
very slow progress.

Warm Regards,

Steve

Bug#304819: spca5xx debian package

2005-09-24 Thread Stephen Birch
Hi Guys

Just to bring you all up to date. We have been using SVN on
svn.debian.org to coordinate the package and will be maintaining it as
a team using Alioth at:

https://alioth.debian.org/projects/pkg-spca5xx/

If you wish you can check out the source from
svn+alioth://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-spca5xx/spca5xx/.

Don't go to the alioth CVS archives, we will be deleting those, consider
them obsolete.

The package itself was uploaded to Debian on Saturday night by Otavio
who helped review and polish the code, thanks Otavio.

The biggest thankyou must go to Kel who did an absolutely first class
job of creating this package in the first place. I am certain you will
like what you see of his work. Thanks Kel

Bug#304819: spca5xx debian package

2005-09-22 Thread Stephen Birch

Hi Kel and Itay

One of the packages I have been planning for Debian is the spca5xx
package for which I filed a ITP some time back. Since I believed my
NM application was shortly to be completed I decided to not use my
normal sponsor for this package preferring to wait until I could do my
own uploads.

Here is the ITP and associated comments:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=304819

To my dismay the NM process is still not complete, the AM
just has too much work on his plate to complete the application.

Recently several people have talked to me about using my sponsor for
the spca5xx package and not keep waiting for the NM queue. Okay
.. so I am now moving on this and want to get the package in Debian ASAP.

Rechecking the ITP I noticed that Itay Ben-Yaacov pointed out that you
guys both have a package already complete. There is no point in
reinventing the wheel so Id like to use your work.

I plan on dropping the changelog (if that is ok) entries but, of
course, give full credit in the README. I am writing to make sure you
are okay with this direction and to make sure you are happy with the approach.

If you guys want to help with this (or even co-maintain) I'll put the
package online for your review before uploading to my sponsor. Since
you guys have already done the hard work it should be up quite soon.

Steve

As I told you, there was a business trip.

Can you not see how irritating the hypocracy of some Debian members is

Debian is not a rushed project, you should know that. As I have
already reminded you we are a very long way from the etch release.

It is a shame some chose to not wait (for Debian) and have created
this forked situation. But I am dealing with it in a reasonable
manner.

Now if you want to complain about slow progress - do it with the NM
people, not me.

Bug#304819: spca5xx debian package

2005-09-22 Thread Stephen Birch
Kel Modderman([EMAIL PROTECTED])@2005-09-23 04:16:
Sounds like a crap idea to me. I don't care whether my particular
package has never had contact with the official debian distribution
before. I've tried my best to improve on my package with each release
and adhere to the strict debian policies in part of the effort to make
Kanotix 100% debian. Even if a package does not come from the official
debian repositories, its up to Stefan and I to make sure it is of
debian standard in every way. Having said that, should our efforts not
be documented as if this was going to be released into debian itself?

Yup .. this idea was bad. Changelog stays as is.

Sure, make an Alioth account, I'd love to share the experience of
maintaining a quality package with other people who share the same
enjoyment and freedom that debian gives them.

Excellent!!

Well, I made a few small updates in the past hour to my package to make
it more suitable to enter debian and am confident that my work is of
high enough quality to make it trivial to add the finishing touches
(depending on your packaginging style perhaps). That is not assuming
anything about the work of the other gentlemen in this equation, Itay,
who seems to have been made uncomfortable by previous dealings with
 prospective DD(s).

I tried to make it clear that I approaching this in a friendly manner
and am still not sure how I upset. The changelog idea was bad - but I
meant no harm.

Likewise, I have been introduced into the world of debian development in
a sour way. The pkg-madwifi project on Alioth is based on my efforts
and I did not even have the opportunity of being able to reply to the
wannabe maintainers request to snatch my efforts, so for sending this
message to me is appreciated. (Even now I do not have write access to
 that svn repository)

Well ... I had no intention of snatching anybody's efforts. I was
actually trapped in this thing by my naive expectation that the NM
process would complete in a reasonable time frame.

Anyway, to cut the story short, I don't want to have another bad
experience, so just put the project into svn on Alioth. Let everybody
look at it, propose some items that could be improved or worked on and
discuss what actually needs to be done and by who.

I have started the process by applying for the account. Assuming it
is approved we will all have full access.

 Thanks, Kel.

Thank you.

  [snip]

I propose a compromise. If for some reason my NM is not complete two
months from now I'll contact you again and send you the package with a
sponsorship request. That way the package will be in Debian for at
least a year before etch releases.

By that time, it makes it almost seven months since your ITA was posted

Yup ... and it makes 35 months since my NM application was submitted
(2004-01-28). I have been told by many people that these are
reasonable time frames for the Debian project.

Can you guys see that the NM is horribly broken? It seems that people
get upset if a package has to wait but nobody cares about the tedious
delays inherent in the NM process.

It isn't much fun being on this side of the fence.

Maybe posting your packaging work for public review somewhere would be a
good idea? Having a few more eyes inspecting the packaging could be a
way to let others than the ftpmasters finding possible problems, thus
lowering the time required in the new queue?

Could you please consider publishing a preliminary package?

Anyway ... it certainly is not my intention to use the ITP mechanism
to hold a package ransom as a way of protesting the NM delays. Clearly
there is strong demand for this package so I must capitulate and push
this package up my priority list to the top.

Otavio ... looks like you get to be the sponsor for this package. Is
that still okay? The timing isn't great because I leave on a 10 day
business trip tomorrow. I usually work on debian projects at the
weekend while on travel so I should have something for you soon after I
return. Is that ASAP enough? :-)

I am going to initiate a conversation with Otavio to discuss the
technical details of this package, this will not be copied to the BTS
so if anybody else is interested let me know and I'll copy them.

Thanks for the sponsorship offer Otavio but I already have a sponsor
for my other packages and have decided to not take on more sponsors
for new packages since my debian application is so close to being
complete.

However .. if Joerg is still stalled when we get close to releasing
etch I'd like to take you up on the sponsor offor at that time. Would
that be ok? I don't want etch to release without this package. For
now, I don't see that there is a need to panic, etch is at least a
year away.

This will probably make your process
faster since people will see your work going inside of project.

Hmm .. I already have my work going inside the project. Although
vobcopy may not be a big league app quite a few people are using it.

The application isn't held up by people but by one busy person, the
AM. Joerg has just been too busy to process his queue but has
promised to complete the appication soon.

Since I have completed Advocate Check, ID Check, PP, TS it really is
almost done.

 Hello,

 Good evening,

I'm really interested to have spca5xx include on Debian and, if you
want, help you to maintain it. I have a ready patch to it to include
my webcam support and already sent it to upstream too.

If you don't have problems, I can sponsor the package while your
 account isn't create on Debian.

Since I was in the To-field and the bug Cc:ed, I must assume you are
 directing your mail to me.

Currently Stephen Birch is the ITP:er. I can guess from previous posts
to this bug, and private mails, that he has lost some of his faith with
 Debian.

As long as he intends to package it I think he should. However, if he
decides to step back on this ITP, I actually wouldn't mind taking it
 over.

So Stephen, is there any progress here or do you feel like passing the
 task?

frequencies, elevation, fuel availability, and runway descriptions). The
route data can also be used to fill in an editable FAA Flight Plan form,
fetch basic weather information from the internet, and display a very
rough map.

This program is to be used for preliminary flight planning only. It is
not to be used as an official source of navigation information. The
database it uses is not guaranteed to be accurate or current (it was
labeled as current in April 2002). Also, the program itself is likely to
still contain some bugs and is not intended to be a substitute for
official flight planning information.

Description : Tools to test USB webcams using Sunplus chips

This set of tools are provide to test WebCam under Linux. Especially
camera based on Sunplus chips, but that should work with some others
cameras too.You need knowledge of Linux to use these tools and we don't
provide any GUI interface for a large public area. These tools are
design to: test, improve, perform our Kernel module in a lot of
situations and provide usefull API for developer . As others projects in
the Linux World we don't have any help, documentation from SunPlus
compagny. All that great work use Reverse Engeneering to provide
interoperabilities of our WebCam device. At this times, we support up to
40 Webcams from a lot of compagnies: (Aiptek, Mustek, Intel, Grandtec,
Maxell, Genius, Dlink, Kodak, Creative, Logitech, Benq, ViewQuest.. )
and only one driver can deal with all, strange Linux World :)

This software is intended to support the spca5xx device driver. They may
be combined into a single package, discussions with upstream are in
progress on this matter.

Bug#303571: ITP: rubyscript2exe -- pseudo compile ruby script into standalone executable

Description : pseudo compile ruby script into standalone executable

RubyScript2Exe transforms your Ruby script into a standalone, compressed
executable. You can look at it as a compiler. Not in the sense of a
source-code-to-byte-code compiler, but as a collector, for it
collects all necessary files to run your script on an other machine:
the Ruby script, the Ruby interpreter and the Ruby runtime library
(stripped down for this script). Anyway, the result is the same: a
standalone executable (application.exe). And that's what we
want!

Bug#299107: ITP: xiron -- ruby interface for xine-library for displaying video

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: xiron
  Version : 0.1.2
Upstream Author : guenter at users.sourceforge.net
* URL : http://xiron.sf.net
* License : GPL
Description : ruby interface for xine-library for displaying video

This is an extension to ruby which allows to use the xine-library to
play media streams. this binding takes advantage from the unique
features of ruby to provide an objectoriented, and easy-to-use interface
to xine. the goal of the api-design is to be lightweight and as smart as
possible but not outsmart the programmer. this api combined with the
powerful features of the ruby language itself leads to a powerful
development framework which makes the development of new media players
surprisingly easy.

xiron also provides some utility classes not directly related to xine
but very usable for frontends. currently there is a class to handle
mediamarks and playlists of various formats and an osd widget set to
easily write purely osd-based front-ends like oxine.

Bug#284285: Acknowledgement (ITP: fairuce -- Spam filter based on sender identity verification)

More information

1. This was incorrectly named fairuse in ITP #284283. This ITP
replaces the incorrect one. Correct name is fairuce (upstream calls it
FairUCE).

2. Freshmeat announcement here:

http://freshmeat.net/projects/fairuce/

3. License concern

The upstream license is free for non-commercial use. Can someone
advise, is this DFSG. I would have thought *not* in which case I will
contact upstream and request change or I'll close the ITP. How
does Qt manage to be DFSG even though Troll chanrges for commercial use?

I have decided not to ITP this ...

1. Non-commercial use only license probably not DFSG
2. It turns out this is a Java application. Yuck. I dont do java.

When I closed 284283 it also closed 284285 so I'll just leave them
both closed.

I really like the idea of this function, I suspect it will be extremely

misleading. I also agree that something that mentions packages would be
good.

Wow ... sometimes the hardest part of a programming project is selecting an
