You should definitely package ssaha2 (http://www.sanger.ac.uk/
Software/analysis/SSAHA2/), rather than the original ssaha, if the
licence will allow it. The original SSAHA is pretty much dead, and
SSAHA2 has new features enabling it to run well on much smaller
hardware than previously.

I'm going to send an email to Zemin asking him about it. I'll CC you.

Thanks for that, Jeroen. What action do I need to take now? Just
make an upload myself with myself set as the maintainer, closing this
bug?

Bug#290536: ITP: acedb -- Object-oriented genome database system

2005-01-14 Thread Tim Cutts
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

  Package name: acedb
  Version : 4.9t
Upstream Author : Ed Griffiths [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  URL : http://www.acedb.org
License : GPL, portions are LGPL
Description : Object-oriented genome database system

ACeDB (originally standing for A C. elegans Database) is an unusual
database system originally designed for the sequencing of the genome of
the nematode worm, C. elegans. It is still in production use for the
annotation of genome sequence data. It can be used for other kinds of
data too, especially if those data lend themselves to a tree-based
representation. For example, ACeDB has been used for storing chip-test
data.

There are X Window System and command line interfaces to the database,
and various supporting applications used for more detailed inspection of
certain types of genomic data.

However, pornography causes significant legal problems in the US, and
probably moreso in many other countries. If I give a Debian CD
containing this software to a minor, am I distributing pornography? (It
sure looks like it, from the pictures.) This is considered a felony in
most parts of the US. Given the contributions made by people under 18
and/or 21 to Debian, this seems to cause a major technical and legal
problem, regardless of any ethical one.

I would ask, for this reason, that the software not be included in
Debian main.

I think this is a strong argument. But it probably also applies to
things like the bible. There are countries in the world where
distributing the bible is illegal. It is presumably therefore also
illegal to distribute Debian in those countries.

If there's going to be a policy of this sort it should be consistent.
