Bug#1034630: ITP: serious-engine -- game engine developed for the classic Serious Sam games

2023-04-20 Thread Sébastien Noel
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Sébastien Noel
X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-de...@lists.debian.org, sebast...@twolife.be

* Package name: serious-engine
  Version : 0~git20230405
* URL : https://github.com/ptitSeb/Serious-Engine/
* License : GPLv2
  Programming Lang: C++
Description : first-person shooter game engine

The serious-engine serve as the base for two games developed
by Croteam and originally published in 2001 & 2002 :

The series follows the adventures of protagonist Sam "Serious" Stone
and his fight against the forces of the notorious extraterrestrial
overlord Mental, who seeks to destroy humanity.

This package alone isn't of any use; it only contains the game engine,
you will need a copy of the original game for this package to be
useful. This can be purchased from GOG.

Bug#570621: Parsing output = derivative work?

2011-03-15 Thread Noel David Torres Taño
 Miriam Ruiz mir...@debian.org wrote:
In general, I wouldn't consider parsing the output of another

In general, I do agree with Miriam that parsing the output of another
program does not make a derivative work. But just to give an example
of where it does happen, git is largely comprised of many small
utilities that communicate over pipes and command-line arguments.

It happens (to me) to be as simple as this:

If the parsed program is susbtituted by a clone will the parsing program
continue working?

If the answer is yes, since it is absurd that the parsing program is a
derivative work of all possible clones at the same time, then clearly it is
not a derivative work. If the answer is no, then clearly the parsing program
depends on the parsed one 'in an intimate way'.

Can a clone or sucessor of nmap be used with gnetworktester?

Bug#597202: ITP: kstars-data-extra-tycho2 -- Contains the Tycho2 star catalog for centralized install, avoiding per-user install

2010-11-02 Thread Noel David Torres Taño
Hello all:

Finally I've found the needed info. Mr. Akarsh Simha from KStars have said me:

 Hi Noel, and others,

I got an almost immediate reply from Jason regarding this stuff. While
the site that I linked to is down, the WayBack Machine shows that we
were indeed compliant with the policy (as advertised when we used that
 data):

 http://web.archive.org/web/20070303235508/http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/ques
 tions_feedback.html#policies

 The site reads:

All ADC data are public domain unless otherwise stated in the
ReadMe file. The data are for scientific use only and have no
   commercial value.

Use of ADC data in reports, publications or formal presentations of
any kind should be acknowledged by reference to the original authors
and publication and to the ADC. The acknowledgement might read:

This paper uses data provided by Joe/Jane Astronomer in AJ, 110,
1992 as distributed by the Astronomical Data Center at NASA Goddard
   Space Flight Center.

Maybe we should, although we are not technically any sort of paper
publication, make it clear somewhere in the README, that the Tycho-2
 catalog is attributed to them.

Noel, is this sufficient? Any advice that you'd have?

 Regards
 Akarsh

I've read the ReadMe file of the Tycho2 catalog at http://cdsarc.u-
strasbg.fr/viz-bin/Cat?cat=I%2F259target=readme and it says nothing about
any license, so I think that the previous statement is applicable, and thus
the derived data (the cooked catalog file for KStars) is applicable.

Is this enough for the sponsoring process to continue?

Thanks

2010-09-22 Thread Noel David Torres Taño
I've just downloaded webkitimageqt source from http://osm.komzpa.net and can
confirm that it Fails To Build From Source in amd64 due to a missing build-
dependency on libqt4-dev which provides the command moc-qt4

I suggest you to send your package to debian-ment...@lists.debian.org for them
to check it and sponsor it to eneter Debian.

Anyway, I can not, too, get any Yahoo Aerial image. I get lines like this:

but nothing happens. The same URL in my firefox shows me a webpage with the

Bug#597202: ITP: kstars-data-extra-tycho2 -- Contains the Tycho2 star catalog for centralized install, avoiding per-user install

2010-09-20 Thread Noel David Torres Taño
On Lunes 20 Septiembre 2010 21:58:41 Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña escribió:
[...]

Please confirm with them that this *derived* data from the Tycho-2 can be
indeed GPL-licensed. I would be very surprised if this is the case (I've
had contact with some producers of star data catalogues in the past) but
 if it is fine.

We packaged the Gliese and Yale packages as they are right now (in non-free
and including the original sources with data files for starplot generated
on install) as the upstream authors would not allow for modification of
 the star data catalogs.

Throughout the years maintainers (both Debian and upstream's) have learnt
of this the hard way, i.e. bugs in celestia: #174456, stellarium
 #198495, kstars #198499, xephem 225002 and stars: #246047, gstar #246048,
 openuniverse #246049.

Some upstream developers (kstars') were very helpful in the past. When we
took this issue up with them, the kstars team (Jason Harris mainly) digged
up contacts with the catalog providers.

This is what someone from CDS replied (when asked about Hipparcos and SAO

 catalogs):
: Catalogues available at CDS contain scientific data distributed
: for free, for a scientific usage. Only the expenses related to
: copying and mailing are charged if relevant.
: Companies including such data in their commercial products cannot
: charge their clients for the data. Furthermore, users must be informed
: of the origin of the data: this means an explicit reference to the
: service provided by the CDS and also to the original author(s) of each
 : catalogue.

So this initially made the catalogs used by kstars non-free, they then
contacted people at ESA which confirmed that Hipparcos was in the

 public-domain:
 : Hello Jason,
 :
: The Hipparcos data is in the public domain and may be used
: by anyone. We do request however that use of the catalogue data
 :
: is acknowledged. Something similar to This application
 :
: makes use of the Hipparcos and Tycho catalogues (ESA, 1997)
: could be appropriate, and a link to the ESA Hipparcos web pages
: (http://sci.esa.int/hipparcos) would also be appreciated.
 :
: Can I enquire what you would like to use the catalogue for?
 :
 : Regards,
 : Karen O'Flaherty

As a consequence kstars switch to the Hypparcos catalog (and many other
 astronomy packages too).

Since the main author of the Tycho2 catalog is Erik Høg I suggest asking
the kstars developed if they have contacted him regarding the catalog and,
if not, get clarification from him

Actually, I believe that the fact that the catalog is not provided
*within* the kstars program is certainly because it is not considered
   free.

I believe instead that the fact that the catalog is not provided *within*
  the

 (...)

own set of predefined stars up to the visual magnitude. Datafile authors
(which are, by the way, two of the same authors of the program itself)
say the datafile is GPL, so I can not think they decided not to include
it because of it being not free.

Please, take this up with upstream for clarification because in the past
other upstreams have made the same assumptions which turned out not to be
valid with other catalogs (i.e. yale). It would be best to seek
clarification from the author. I don't see GPL anywhere at
http://www.astro.ku.dk/~erik/Tycho-2/, in fact, I don't see any reference
to licenses at all so I'm quite sure the original author do not stamped a
 GPL license to the data.

Since upstream developers (kstars) where very open to discussion and where
really helpful when we brought to them this issue 7 years ago, they
probably have researched this issue, but a statement from the original
author of the catalog (to be used in debian/copyright) would be good to
 have.

 Regards

 Javier

I will contact kstars developers about that, as you suggest. I really do not
want to get Debian into (more) legal issues like those you name. I will try to
get the statement from Erik Høg too (mailed him yesterday, no answer as of
now).

Moreover, the cite from Karen O'Flaherty mentions both Hipparcos and Tycho.
Does it refer just to Tycho 1 ?

Thanks for all the work and advice

2010-09-19 Thread Noel David Torres Taño
 it is not considered free.

I believe instead that the fact that the catalog is not provided *within* the
kstars program is certainly because it is quite big and unnecessary for
ocassional use of the program as a home planetarium, since kstars has its own
set of predefined stars up to the visual magnitude. Datafile authors (which
are,
by the way, two of the same authors of the program itself) say the datafile is
GPL, so I can not think they decided not to include it because of it being not
free.

Please review the licensing status of the original data files before you
make an upload of this package to Debian.

Sure I will do.

If you are interested in astronomy packages, I encourage you to subscribe
to the stardata-common-devel mailing list to seek assistance on how to
(properly) package star data catalogues in Debian.

As said, I'm not interested in astronomy packages in general (false, I'm
interested but don't have a damn single minute free), but just on avoiding a
very concrete problem I've detected on computers I take care of, namely that
the same gigabytes are downloaded and stored several times. Anyway, every help
offered to get these datasets ported on to the stardata-common-devel format
will be accepted, and if that work starts or if I get more time to package
other catalogs (or even use other astronomy programs), I will surely join that
mailing list.

 Javier

This package contains the data of the Tycho 2 star catalog that kstars would
otherwise offer the user to download. Installing this package avoids the need
for the users to each one download the catalog for itself. It is configurable
if you want the users to be unable to do those downloads.

This package includes a couple of tools that you can use to
automatically spell-check your SGML documents. One of the
advantages of this tool over some other SGML-aware spell
checkers is that it scans your documents in the form in which
the SGML parser actually sees it, which means it is not line-based,
system entities are resolved, marked sections are treated appropriately, etc.

Also, this tool can be made aware of particular DTDs, in the
sense that it knows not to spell-check the content of elements
that do not represent human-language text, such as programlisting
in DocBook. An exclusion list for the DocBook DTD is included, others
can be added trivially.

  Description : Bandwidth Request Throttling

This Apache module is intended to reduce the load on your server bandwidth
generated by popular virtual hosts, directories, locations, or users according
to supported polices (see below) that decide when to delay or refuse requests.
Also mod_throttle can track and throttle incoming connections by IP address or
by authenticated remote user.

Every request now passes through four levels of throttling, which are: by
client's IP address (ThrottleClientIP), by authenticated remote user name
(ThrottleRemoteUser), by local user ID (ThrottleUser), and by directory,
location, virtual host, or server (ThrottlePolicy).

Just use

Description : Open Workgroup Data Exchange Server

in short: an Exchange replacement.

NH received more and more customer requests asking for a
indepedent workgroup server solution running under LINUX, but
using MS-Outook(TM) as the Client on the MS-Windows(TM) Desktop
for use with shared calendars and task lists etc. and not limited
to e-mail. MS-Outlook(TM) uses a MAPI Service Provider to store
workgroup data centraly in MS-Exchange(TM) database or other 3rd
party messaging servers. Based on this, NH decided to start an
internal project that implements a storage server that can run
on LINUX where different workgroup clients and other applications
can exchange workgroup data. BILL is now under the GNU public licence.
(from http://www.billworkgroup.org/)

From the FAQ:
 What is BILL?
BILL was an internal project at Neuberger Hughes. It´s a
workgroup storage server that can handle complex data objects
and store them in a PostgreSQL database. It´s written in Python
an C. BILL is now published under the GPL (GNU public licence).

Hello,

From the Author Pifko Krisztian [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Gnewsserver is an another story, it is just some php and perl scripts

SGI's Linux FailSafe is the premiere next generation High-Availability (HA)
solution for business critical applications. It provides a simple way to
make your applications HA without having to resort to rewriting or recompiling

a robust clustering environment with resilience from any single point of
failure.

Linux FailSafe is architected to scale up to 16 nodes in a cluster with the
cluster members sharing storage. Linux FailSafe and shared storage allows
multiple servers to assume control of data in the event of a failure. At the
point of failure, applications are resumed on the remaining system{s} and
filesystems are automatically made available to their applications.

Bug#116010: ITP: netdude -- NETwork DUmp data Displayer and Editor for tcpdump tracefiles

2001-10-17 Thread Noel Koethe
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

http://netdude.sourceforge.net/

License: BSD License

It is a GUI-based tool that allows you to make detailed changes to
packets in tcpdump tracefiles, in particular, it can currently do the
following:
* Set the value of every field in IP, TCP and UDP packet headers. ICMP
support will be finished shortly.
* Copy, move and delete packets in the tracefile.
* Fragment and reassemble IP packets.
* Netdude constantly communicates with a tcpdump process to update the
familiar tcpdump output that corresponds to the trace. This also means that any
changes made to your local version of tcpdump are reflected in Netdude.
* Plugin architecture: people can easily add plugins for specific tasks.
The code comes with a plugin for checksum correction in IP, TCP and UDP, and a
dummy plugin.
* Through the plugin mechanism, Netdude provides a good facility for
writing tcpdump trace file filters.

Bug#114644: RFP: APC - Alternative PHP Cache

2001-10-06 Thread Noel Koethe
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

http://apc.communityconnect.com/
WHAT IS APC?
APC is the Alternative PHP Cache. It was conceived of to provide a free, open,
and robust framework for compiling and caching php scripts.

APC was conceived of to provide a way of boosting the performance of PHP on
heavily loaded sites by providing a way for scripts to be cached in a compiled
state, so that the overhead of parsing and compiling can be almost completely
eliminated. There are commercial products which provide this functionality, but
they are neither open-source nor free. Our goal was to level the playing field
by providing an implementation that allows greater flexibility and is
universally accessible.

We also wanted the cache to provide visibility into it's own workings and those
of PHP, so time was invested in providing internal diagnostic tools which allow
for cache diagnostics and maintenance.

Thus arrived APC. Since we were committed to developing a product which can
easily grow with new version of PHP, we implemented it as a zend extension,
allowing it to either be compiled into PHP or added post facto as a drop in
module. As with PHP, it is available completely free for commercial and
non-commercial use, under the same terms as PHP itself.

APC has been tested under PHP 4.0.3, 4.0.3pl1 and 4.0.4. It currently compiles
under Linux and FreeBSD. Patches for ports to other OSs/ PHP versions are
welcome.

 Hello Joe,

As you wrote on the website in the subject this package is for adoption.
I'm a newbie in maintaining and you wrote also its Ok for a new

I have a mentor ( Michael Meskes [EMAIL PROTECTED] ) who will check my
output and will upload it then.

 Thanks for answer.
