2002-04-08 Thread Erich Schubert
Are you going to package this?

No. I did not try to resolve the copyright problems (i don't know if
game concepts can be copyrighted in the US; the name is similar, too)

Furthermore the code upstream (i've been contributing to the AI) has
some major drawbacks in gameplay IMHO. (like an undefined ordering of
the conveyors)
Development is stalled and a few ugly bugs persist.

It sure is playable and fun though.

Actually i have packages ready, but packaging was trivial (after all
it's a tcl script...) so i won't save you much work.

So if you like playing the game, go ahead an package it.

Greetings,
Erich

2002-04-08 Thread Daniel Burrows
On Tue, Apr 09, 2002 at 02:24:04AM +0200, Erich Schubert [EMAIL PROTECTED]
was heard to say:
What makes this more problematic than Freeciv, Pingus, frozen-bubble,
  ***tris, lbreakout, etc?

Actually it shouldn't be more problematic. Especially since all the
former are computer games whereas RoboWhatever is a board game, and much
of it's charm comes from that ;)

Actually, I think it's more common to patent board games.

The official Robo Rally homepage is
http://www.wizards.com/roborally/welcome.asp, for reference. The makers
are Wizards of the Coast (also the MTG and DND people, I think)

I retitled the bug to RFP on your suggestion,
although i no longer request it to be packaged actually. Installing is
as easy as tar xzf, and the game has a few bugs (disappearing /
unuseable flags in ctf, sometimes irritating, non-predicteable behaviour
 of the conveyors etc.)

Hm, maybe I should do a rewrite in a sane language. [0] The graphics are
nice, and having them available would probably make writing the actual
game a lot easier.

/me suppresses the urge to try out the Scheme SDL bindings he wrote last
weekend and goes back to his work..

  Daniel

Game where players program their robots against each other

does that have to be added? gosh, robowars et al is the most
incredible display of the stupidity that our society is gaining by the
day.

*what's the point*???

i am active in artificial intelligence research and robotics, and more
often than i'd like, people equate my work with robots with what they
have seen on, cough, television - ah, so you also make robots that
can fight???

that's pathetic!

you have never player roborally, have you?
Just because there are some really stupid tv shows (are there some that
are not???) doesn't mean this is a game of fun and tactics.
It's a great board game i've enjoed much!

 that's pathetic!

your reply is.
Don't judge things by the title, that's exactly what you are complaining
about with other people.
Other people judge your work by a tv show, you judge the game by the tv
show, too... Sorry, you are no better than they are.

The game is great, no matter if you like the title.

Erich
